Review: 'The New Daughter'

Now here's a strange case: a sedate and mellow horror thriller from Warner Bros. called The New Daughter that used to be a New Line title but got lost in the shuffle and then dumped into a 30-city release right before Christmas -- despite the fact that it's a vehicle for a rather big movie star named Kevin Costner. When confronted by a "mini-release dump" title like this one or Carriers (which I really dug) or Blood Creek (haven't seen it yet) or Midnight Meat Train (woohoo!) I often go on the defensive. I actually root for the movie to be good, so I can then point to the boneheaded studio folks and claim that they sunk a quality flick by tossing it into obscure theaters only because of contractual …

'The Vampire Diaries' Gets New Blood

The CW's breakout hit, The Vampire Diaries adds a new member to the supernaturally-attractive cast.  Starting with the January 21 episode, Mia Kirshner will join the cast as the wife of history teacher/vampire Alaric.  According to EW.com, the January 21 episode has long been in the can, and hints that "11th hour reshoots" were done to add her to the episode.  I'm a little wary of last-minute reshoots, as they tend to be… well, not good.  But I love Mia Kirshner, so I will keep an open mind. Kirshner is probably best known for her role in Showtime's The L Word, but FEARnet readers are probably more familiar with her work in Exotica, The Crow: City of Angels, and The Black …

Scary Anti-Christmas from SpookhauS!

If you thought the creators of twisted satanic soundscapes just give up and go into hiding during all the warm 'n' fuzzy festivities this time of year, you haven't spent enough time in our neighborhood. Freezing nights, chill winds and slate-gray skies make the perfect setting for the sinister sensibilities of the Canadian "Artist of Darkness" known as SpookhauS... in his world, perky carolers be damned! He invited FEARnet to check out some anti-Christmas treats he's cooked up in his lab, and there's enough creepiness down there to scare Santa right out of his striped skivvies. Hit the jump and find out for yourself! SpookhauS, alias Bruce Campbell (no relation to the big-chinned deadite slayer), has …

Roger Corman's 'Piranha' on Blu-ray

It was just yesterday that one of my co-workers alerted me to the fact that Shout Factory had plans to release a slew of Roger Corman classics on DVD and Blu-ray. Today we have word on the first title to get the hi def treatment courtesy of Hi Def Digest and it's Corman's 1978 killer fish flick (Directed by Joe Dante and written by John Sayles) Piranha. Yes folks, Piranha will be given the Blu-ray treatment on April 6th 2010. No word on specs or supplements, but it's worth noting that HD Digest is indeed listing a Blu-ray sized Msrp of $27.99, so here's hoping for one heck of a new hi-def transfer and lots of goodies to go along with it. Looking forward to the other Corman titles to be announced, we'll keep …

'Fringe: The Lost Episode'

Fox will be airing a 'new' episode of Fringe this January, a season one episode that was allegedly – and inexplicably – "lost" and recently recovered.  The episode will feature Charlie Francis (played by Kirk Acevedo), who was killed off early in season two.  The plotline centers around a teenager who, when taken off life support after an accident, suddenly wakes up, speaking Russian and with a surprising knowledge of classified Russian secrets. There are so many reasons that I think this is a marketing trick.  First off, a "lost" episode of a Jj Abrams show just in time for the final season of his other show, Lost?  Second, the episode is entitled Unearthed – that …

Rammstein Debut New (Porn-Free) Video

German industrial-metallers Rammstein had quite a task ahead of them trying to top the unbelievably lewd antics of the first video from their chart-topping album Liebe Ist Für Alle Da – especially since that particular X-rated clip became one of the hottest viral videos of the year. While not nearly as shocking as its predecessor, their newly launched follow-up Ich Tu Dir Weh does the next best thing by capturing the maniacal energy of a Rammstein stage performance. It's also among the best of the many excellent tracks on the new album, so it's well worth a spin… but what the hell is up with frontman Till Lindemann's teeth? Described by the band as "the ultimate distillation of a Rammstein …

Stephen King's 'N.' Graphic Novel Adaptation

Between Under the Dome and his recently release short story collection Just After Sunset, it would appear as if Stephen King is back in top form. More good news for King fans today, it was announced that Marvel will be adapting the Stephen King short story N. (from the Just After Sunset collection) into a 4 part graphic novel beginning March 2010. More after the jump. According to www.stephenking.com : The creative team of Marc Guggenheim and Alex Maleev, also responsible for the red-hot Stephen King's "N" Motion Comic, tell the story of something terrifying hidden in Ackerman's Field. A bizarre arrangement of eight stones keeps a nightmare contained, but when--in the eye of an unfortunate beholder--the …

69 Eyes Premiere 'Dead N Gone' Video

The latest video from Finnish vamp-rockers The 69 Eyes is Dead N Gone, directed once again by the band's go-to celeb director Bam Margera. The San Francisco-shot video promotes the new single from their smash album Back In Blood, one of the best dark-rock entries of 2009. It's pretty hard to top the sexy supremacy of their previous video Dead Girls are Easy, but these guys know how to rock the dark side, so you know it'll sound good. Flip it over, check it out and let us know what you think... While the visual storyline is a bit too emo for my liking (the song is about a bitter breakup, after all), you can't say frontman Jyrki69 and crew are anything less than supremely cool throughout... and at least you get to …

Top 9 of '09: Comic Books and Graphic Novels

2009 saw horror continue to make its presence felt in the perpetually superhero-centric medium of funny books, thanks to strong original series and how-did-we-live-without-them archival projects. Here are nine of our favorites in alphabetical order. Cat Burglar Black Richard Sala is a name that should be revered by horror fans as everywhere. Starting out as a worthy successor to Charles Addams and, at his most grotesque, Chester Gould, Sala has evolved, through books like Peculia and The Chuckling Whatsit, into today's premiere cartoonist of the macabre and strange. His latest graphic novel concerns a silver-haired orphan named K, who, after a difficult upbringing, enrolls at a women's academy and discovers her …

Scream with the Mothman in New Mudvayne Video

To coincide with the release of their self-titled studio album, Mudvayne have also launched the video for Scream With Me – the concluding chapter in a chilling short film/song trilogy. You can watch it right after the jump, so get in there and soak up those black light rays! This nightmarish new clip caps a storytelling cycle that began with the singles & videos Beautiful and Strange and Heard it All Before. The trilogy is stylistically tied together by director Frankie Nasso's eerie black light cinematography, which plays into the style of the new album art by tattoo mastermind Paul Booth. That artwork has already generated a bit of advance buzz for its groundbreaking use of black light-reactive …

Updated: After Dark's 'Zombies of Mass Destruction' Poster

21 December 2009 4:24 PM, PST

Yesterday we brought you a first look at the final poster art for After Dark Horrorfest's The Final. Today, we have a look at the After Dark poster for Zombies of Mass Destruction. Check out the full artwork along with the official description and trailer for Zombies of Mass Destruction below. After Dark Horrorfest is in theaters Jan 29th, 2010. An idyllic island town is under attack by that most invasive of pests: zombies! Port Gamble is being overrun with brain-eaters, and the people seem powerless to stave them off. But wait, a ragtag band of rebels is trying to turn the tide and push the invading hoards of undead back. It sounds familiar, sure, but this time stereotypes are on parade (and parody) in a retake …

'Dexter' Post-Mortem

21 December 2009 3:07 PM, PST

A week after the record-breaking season finale of Dexter, and I am still reeling from Rita's death.  So are the cast and crew members.  EW.com has a couple of really interesting interviews that are kind of a season debriefing. Dexter himself, Michael C. Hall, talks about losing his "wife," Julie Benz, and the Dexter/Trinity relationship.  Meanwhile, executive producer Clyde Phillips discusses the agonizing decision to kill off Rita, and the possible directions that season five might go in.  He doesn't give up any details, but to be fair, they haven't actually gone into production yet on the next season.   It is going to be a long year waiting for season five. …

Top 9 of '09: Unreleased Films

21 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST

One of the more amusing debates that arises at year's end is this: When putting together your Top 10 (or  20 or 50) of the year, how do you categorize films that aren't out yet? What if a film came out in its native UK, but hasn't hit the states yet? What if you saw a great horror flick at Toronto, but it hasn't even made it to DVD yet? We offer up our top 9 unreleased films of '09 in alphabetical order. Carriers From a savagely underwhelming theatrical release to a frustrating "rental only" DVD appearance, this fine piece of apocalyptic horror has been shafted on almost every front. (But hey, Stephen King dug the flick, so that's something...) So consider this our "trying to …
