HBO’s Game of Thrones Season 3 Trailer

26 February 2013 4:23 PM, PST

Capping off a fantasy-themed month that includes Jack the Giant Slayer, Oz: The Great and Powerful and Film Junk's own '80s fantasy premium podcast, the third season of George R.R. Martin's Game of Thrones will also be premiering on March 31st. To get you in the mood, HBO recently released a minute-long trailer for the new season that hints at some big payoffs from Season 2. From what I remember the last season was a bit slow at times, but I hope that the apparent increase in magical mayhem doesn't take away from the human drama. Are you psyched for the return of Game of Thrones? Check out the trailer after the jump and let us know what you think.

Joe Carnahan Drops Death Wish Remake, May Board Tony Scott’s Narco Sub Instead

26 February 2013 11:44 AM, PST

Joe Carnahan has been having a difficult time finding a follow-up to his 2011 film The Grey, which is somewhat surprising considering that the movie was both a critical and commercial success. He was attached to direct a new Daredevil movie for Fox last year, but was then forced to abandon it when the rights reverted back to Marvel. He had also signed on to write and direct a Death Wish remake for MGM and Paramount, but alas he has now apparently decided to walk away from that project as well. The reason? He didn't want to cast Bruce Willis in the lead role. According to Deadline, Joe Carnahan has officially left the Death Wish reboot over creative differences. Word on the street is that the studio wanted Bruce Willis for the lead role but Carnahan wasn't having it. I guess he simply did not feel that Bruno would make a »

This Week on DVD and Blu-ray: The Master, The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn – Part 2, Holy Motors

26 February 2013 11:16 AM, PST

Just a couple of days after the Oscars, you'd think there might be a handful of nominees trying to capitalize on the extra exposure, but it's actually a pretty slow week with the exception of P.T. Anderson's The Master (which is definitely a buy). Oscar-nominated documentary How to Survive a Plague also hits stores this week along with Leos Carax's divisive art house classic Holy Motors. Other less prestigious releases include The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2 (which hits stores on Saturday), feminist thriller Girls Against Boys and Chasing Mavericks starring Gerard Butler. The Coen Brothers' The Hudsucker Proxy also debuts on Blu-ray through the Warner Archive Collection, while Criterion offers up new editions of Chronicle of a Summer and Sansho the Bailiff. Will you be picking up anything this week? Check out the full list of new releases after the jump. Amazon.com Widgets

Kon-Tiki Trailer: Norway’s Epic Oscar-Nominated Adventure

25 February 2013 11:27 AM, PST

By the time the Oscars roll around, most of the major nominees have at least had a limited theatrical release and are known quantities to some extent. However, when it comes to the Best Foreign Film category, you can usually count on at least a few of the nominees being ripe for discovery, with the Oscars serving as their first real exposure to North American audiences. This year Kon-Tiki was one such movie, and although it couldn't beat Michael Haneke's Amour, the clips shown from the movie looked intriguing to say the least. The Weinstein Company will be distributing the movie stateside, and on Friday they released a domestic trailer to help build some buzz. It is based on the true story of Thor Heyerdahl, a Norwegian ethnographer who set sail from South America to Polynesia on a balsa wood raft in order to prove his theory that previous settlers followed the same journey. »

Quvenzhané Wallis to Replace Willow Smith in Annie Remake

25 February 2013 7:44 AM, PST

A month ago we learned that Will Smith's proposed remake of the musical Annie was still happening, but that it probably wouldn't star his daughter Willow. Initially it had been reported that she was now "too old" for the role, but that seemed like a bit of a stretch. During a talk at Temple University, Smith later confessed that she simply didn't want to do it. After trying to talk her into doing the movie, she told him, "Daddy, I have a better idea, how about I just be 12." That left Sony looking for a new Annie and now they seem to have found one in Oscar-nominated Beasts of the Southern Wild star Quvenzhané Wallis. It had been rumoured a couple of weeks ago that Wallis would take over the lead role in the Annie remake, but now Sony has confirmed it with a press release. Hannah Minghella, president »

2013 Academy Award Winners

25 February 2013 6:39 AM, PST

If you didn't tune in for the Academy Awards last night, here's a short breakdown of what you missed: William Shatner showed up from the future, Jennifer Lawrence tripped and fell, and Michelle Obama co-presented the award for Best Picture. It was kind of a weird night, but for the most part, the hardware was handed out to all of the expected parties. Argo won Best Picture, Daniel Day-Lewis won Best Actor and Jennifer Lawrence won Best Actress. If there was a surprise, it was that Life of Pi walked away with the most awards (4) including Best Director for Ang Lee. Zero Dark Thirty got shut out of everything except for Best Sound Editing (in a rare tie with Skyfall). Quentin Tarantino was also a pleasant surprise for Best Original Screenplay. What did you think of this year's Oscars? What was the highlight of the night? How would you rate Seth McFarlane as host? »

Monday Morning Box Office Report: Identity Thief Back on Top

25 February 2013 6:07 AM, PST

The last weekend in February was a fairly uneventful one as neither of the two new releases were able to get a firm foothold at the box office. The door was open for Seth Gordon's Identity Thief to sneak back to the top after both Snitch and Dark Skies underperformed and A Good Day to Die Hard dropped like a rock. Identity Thief is the only real success story so far this year and is expected to hit $100 million by the end of the week. Snitch did at least manage second place with a $13 million debut followed by Escape from Planet Earth and Safe Haven. A Good Day to Die Hard fell from first to fifth, a 60% drop likely due to poor word of mouth. As for Scott Stewart's Dark Skies, it was largely swept under the rug by The Weinstein Company and opened in sixth place with just $8.85 million. »
