Film Junk Bonus Podcast: Avatar
You've heard plenty of ranting and raving about James Cameron's Avatar over the past week or so, but if for some reason you're not completely burnt out on the film yet, we've got another half-hour of discussion to throw out into the ether. Although there weren't a ton of spoiler topics we wanted to address, we thought it best to keep it as a separate bonus podcast that acts as a supplement to Episode #248 [1] of the Film Junk Podcast. The bonus podcast is about 30 minutes long and it addresses some of the lingering questions we had about the story, some of the issues raised by the movie, and a number of Reed Farrington's inevitable nitpicks. Warning: This podcast is basically all spoilers all the time, so if you haven't seen the movie yet, think twice before you listen. » Download the MP3 (15 Mb) [2] Subscribe to the podcast feed: [3] [4] [5] [6] [1] http://www. …

Best of the Decade #7: Fantastic Mr. Fox (2009)
The #7 film on Film Junk’s list is a recent favorite, and as such is probably at a higher ranking than it would be had it come out years before. Regardless, I am very pleased that despite the gang’s split votes regarding the decade’s animation, Fantastic Mr. Fox has emerged as a consensus pick, allowing us one more chance to pimp this thing out while it is still in theaters. As the decade began, Wes Anderson was King Shit of Indie Mountain, coming off of the modest success of Bottle Rocket and the breakout of Rushmore. While The Royal Tenenbaums was still well loved, for others it opened the door to the criticisms that continued to dog the new auteur throughout the decade: a reliance on the same themes of rich kids with daddy issues, Futura, old LPs, and senseless character quirks. To make things worse, Wes was …

Roger Ebert’s Top 10 Mainstream and Indie Movies of 2009
13 hours ago
Various "Best of 2009" lists are finally starting to come out of the woodwork, and it won't be long now before they're all blurring together. But if you only read a few of these lists before the end of the year, one that always deserves a look is Roger Ebert's. Even though you may not agree with all of his reviews, he's still the de facto standard for film critics, and he usually manages to throw a few interesting picks into the mix as well. This year he has done something a little different: he decided to do two separate top 10 lists, one for mainstream Hollywood releases and one for independent films. This allows him to give recognition to a lot of movies that no one has had a chance to see yet. Most of his mainstream choices are fairly straightforward, but the one that's sure to spark the most …

Monday Morning Box Office Report: Avatar Saves Hollywood
14 hours ago
Good news folks... James Cameron's Avatar has saved cinema! Okay, that may be a little premature. It didn't break the all-time opening weekend box office record (it didn't even break the opening weekend record for December), but it still made $232 million worldwide and it is expected to continue making even more money over the next few weeks as strong word of mouth carries it through. For all the things it had going against it (including a big snow storm across the East Coast), I think it's safe to say that Cameron has silenced his critics. The Princess and the Frog and The Blind Side were a distant second and third this weekend, while Did You Hear About the Morgans? made just $7 million, proving that sometimes America really does have good taste. Will Avatar be able to hold its own against Sherlock Holmes next weekend? 1. Avatar -- $73M 2. The Princess and the Frog …
