March Not Strong Enough to Salvage First Quarter of 2013

5 April 2013 5:26 PM, PDT

Coming off a truly terrible February, the box office rebounded a bit in March. Total domestic grosses came in around $828 million, which makes it only the third March ever to amass over $800 million. Still, it was off 12 percent from last March's record*that drop can be entirely accounted for with The Hunger Games effect*and year-to-date box office remains down 12 percent.Oz The Great and Powerful led the way in March with $198.4 million, which is more than twice as much as any other title. It got off to a very good $79.1 million start on the second weekend of the month, and that remains by-far the highest opening of the year so far. Unfortunately, through its first 24 days, Oz was around $95 million behind Alice in Wonderland, and it will close with over $100 million less. That'd be fine if it was doing great business overseas, but it's going to wind up with »

Forecast: 'Evil Dead,' 'Jurassic 3D' To Terrorize Audiences This Weekend... >

4 April 2013 5:47 PM, PDT

Midnight Update: The Evil Dead remake earned an estimated $1.8 million from 10 p.m. and midnight showings last night. In comparison, 2010's A Nightmare on Elm Street remake earned $1.6 million at midnight and went on to open to $32.9 million. With the inclusion of 10 p.m. shows, it's likely that Evil Dead is a little bit more front-loaded, though it's now guaranteed to open north of $20 million for the weekend. Forecast: The first weekend of April is a throwback featuring a remake and a 3D re-release, and it looks like the remake is going to easily take first place. On the back of an aggressive marketing effort, Evil Dead opens at 3,025 locations and should have no problem earning over $20 million this weekend. Meanwhile, Jurassic Park 3D, debuting at 2,771 locations, will be the latest test of the viability of 3D re-releases.The original Evil Dead movie, released in 1983, earned a meager $2.4 million during its theatrical run. »

April Box Office Preview

3 April 2013 4:11 PM, PDT

Coming off an underwhelming first quarter at the domestic box office, it's unlikely that April 2013 will do much to turn things around. With only seven new nationwide releases*one of which is a 3D re-release*the major studios are mostly avoiding April, and that should translate to moderate grosses. April 2011, which had 13 nationwide debuts, holds the April record with $793 million, which is a figure that's completely out of reach for the upcoming month.April 5The first weekend of April features one remake and one re-release, and both are poised to do decent business. Jurassic Park 3D is the third major live-action 3D re-release following last year's Star Wars: Episode I - The Phantom Menace 3D and Titanic 3D. Both were modest domestic performers*Titanic was tops with $57.9 million*though Titanic at least proved that there can be major upside overseas. Specifically, the movie earned an incredible $145 million in China; while »

Around-the-World Roundup: 'G.I. Joe' Conquers Overseas Box Office

2 April 2013 4:50 PM, PDT

Thanks to the addition of 3D ticket prices and international stars The Rock and Bruce Willis, G.I. Joe: Retaliation opened significantly higher than its predecessor at the overseas box office this weekend. The action sequel grossed an estimated $80.3 million from around 75 percent of the international marketplace, which is the top opening of the year so far. It took first place in Russia ($8.8 million), South Korea ($6.2 million), Mexico ($5.8 million), Germany ($4.3 million), Australia ($3.9 million) and France ($3.2 million). It also wound up in second place behind The Croods in the U.K. ($4.2 million) and Spain ($2.6 million), and was a little underwhelming in Italy ($1.7 million). According to Paramount, this debut is nearly double the first movie's opening haul across similar markets. It's also around 25 percent ahead of A Good Day to Die Hard and Wrath of the Titans. Using these comparisons, G.I. Joe: Retaliation should be on its way to between $250 and $300 million overseas, »
