Will Josh Brolin Be One Half of New 'Men in Black'?
According to The Los Angeles Times, Columbia Pictures is interested in bringing Josh Brolin aboard for Men in Black 3. What isn't known, however, is exactly who Brolin would play.
He could play a new single-monikered government agent, reports The Times, with Tommy Lee Jones' Agent K passing the baton to Brolin's character. Or he could play Agent K as a young man. Or something else entirely.
Will Smith is expected to return for the third installment, written by Etan Cohen, but no word yet about whether or not Tommy Lee Jones will be back. Meanwhile, Barry Sonnenfeld has also been rumored to return to direct the third outing.
Personally, the idea of Brolin taking up the slack for Tommy Lee Jones just seems natural to us—we can easily see him as a younger Agent K, or in a similar role to that of Agent K.
Brolin has recently

Are Blanchett and Weaving Returning for 'The Hobbit'?
Casting for The Hobbit begins this week, and Peter Jackson has told MTV that there are two 'Lord of the Rings' stars who will likely be returning to the franchise, in addition to the previously-announced Ian McKellen.
"Gandalf, being a 2,000-year-old wizard, is still around and plays a major role in 'The Hobbit,' and we're having Ian McKellen reprise," explained the filmmaker, who is executive-producing the flick and writing the screenplay. "There's a couple of other characters: Elrond, who was played by Hugo Weaving [in the original films], and there's a possibility of Galadriel, who was played by Cate Blanchett."
The plot thickens. The presence of Weaving and Blanchett would definitely add a nice sense of continuity to the new films, to say nothing of the additional thespian gravitas they'd bring to The Hobbit.
Lensing of the two movies is slated to begin in the spring, with Guillermo del Toro at the helm.

'Yogi Bear' Gets its Mayor...and it's Andy Daly
20 hours ago
Andy Daly (Semi-Pro) has been added to the cast of Warner Bros.' big screen adaptation of the classic Hanna-Barbera property Yogi Bear.
Variety reports that Daly will play Mayor Brown, who uses the city budget as his personal expense account, driving the city into bankruptcy. He then comes up with the idea of selling Jelly Stone Park to fix his mess.
Daily will join Anna Faris, Dan Aykroyd, Justin Timberlake and Tom Cavanaugh in the 3-D live-action/CG animated adventure that has already begun shooting in New Zealand.
Donald De Line and Karen Rosenfelt are producing and Eric Brevig (Journey to the Center of the Earth) is directing from a script by Brad Copeland.
The planned release date for Yogi Bear is December 17, 2010.

'Romancing the Stone' Moves Towards Production
20 hours ago
Last December we reported that 20th Century Fox had hired Daniel McDermott (Eagle Eye) to write a remake of the 1984 Michael Douglas/Kathleen Turner film, Romancing the Stone. We were a tad snide with our editorializing.
With increasingly good reason, it would seem. Pajiba is reporting that the film is moving forward, and that Robert Luketic (Legally Blone, The Ugly Truth) could be tapped to direct the project. Luketic is perhaps not the most respected director in Hollywood. As Pajiba describes it: He directed The Ugly Truth and Monster-in-Law, two very bad movies that apparently allowed him to fall on his ass backwards up the Hollywood ladder.
Luketic also has Barbarella in development, a film in which few seem to have any confidence, chiefly because of his involvement.
All of which begs the question: Why bother with this Romancing the Stone remake at all, since it's likely to be just

Ratings Deliver Harsh Verdict on 'Stargate Universe'
8 December 2009 12:14 AM, PST
As Sgu: Stargate Universe heads into its Christmas hiatus, one thing is clear: some viewers are not keen on the new direction the franchise has taken. They have said as much in comments under an article yours truly recently wrote for CinemaSpy. Now there is more bad news for the Vancouver-based production team. If ratings are anything to go by, a significant number of people that had been watching the series didn't bother tuning in for the mid-season finale.
According to TV by the Numbers, the last episode before the festive break, "Justice," brought in Stargate Universe's lowest ratings so far. According to numbers published on that website, the previous episode, "Life," was watched by an average audience of 1.891 million people. That was slightly up on the previous week's total of 1.802 and substantially higher than the previous low for the season of 1.626 million viewers (for the episode "Earth"). The

'War Birds' Test Footage Visually Impressive
7 December 2009 9:55 PM, PST
On Monday we told you about a new action-adventure film entitled War Birds, from first time director Michael Chait. J. Todd Harris, who served as a producer on Bottle Shock, along with Tron Legacy screenwriter Richard Jefferies, are reportedly polishing the script, and, along with Chait, will also produce the film for Michigan-based Tmu Pictures.
Since then, three minutes of test footage for the film have been released on the official site. It's pretty rough footage, without any sort of story, but it's also real airplanes sans CG (so far). Even Michael Bay ought to be impressed with that. To check out the footage, click on the Video tab above.
War Birds follows an Air Force veteran-turned-reckless airshow re-enactment pilot as he gets pulled into the underground culture of illegal, real-life aerial combat. Feels like period-reenactment counter-culture Top Gun to us. If we're honest, we're not really quite sure what this story is all about,

Exclusive: Terry Gilliam Reflects on 'Parnassus'
7 December 2009 9:50 PM, PST
Director Terry Gilliam is known for movies that take strange, wonderful and sometimes indecipherable trips deep into the recesses of the human mind. His latest film, The Imaginarium of Doctor Parnassus (read Blaine Kyllo's review of the film here), was to be just another in a string of mind-bending movies from the director who has brought us such previous brain teasers as Brazil, The Fisher King and The Brothers Grimm. But in the middle of filming, something happened that changed the direction of the film, the cast, and the director himself.
As everyone is well aware, the star of Doctor Parnassus, Heath Ledger, died suddenly while on a break from filming Gilliam’s movie. While the rest of the world mourned the loss of a potentially great actor, Gilliam was forced to decide how to finish a film that would now serve as a eulogy for Ledger.

New 'Wolfman' Featurette Takes You Behind the Scenes
7 December 2009 9:45 PM, PST
Universal's The Wolfman is set to arrive in theaters in just over two months (February 12, 2010), and the studio is ramping up its PR campaign. Their latest effort is a new featurette that ties the new film to the studio's storied cinematic classics of the '40s and '50s which inspired director Joe Johnston's remake.
In the featurette, the actors talk about the wolfman myth and lots of new scenes from the film are revealed. Check it out using the player below.
The Wolfman tells of Lawrence Talbot (Benicio Del Toro), an actor who returns to the home of his estranged father (Anthony Hopkins) after the death of his brother. Familiar awkwardness becomes the least of his problems when he is attacked and bitten by a wolf and quickly takes on hairy, toothy qualities whenever the moon rises.
The new film also stars Emily Blunt, Hugo Weaving and Art Malik.

'Dead Of Night' Moving Under the Radar
7 December 2009 9:40 PM, PST
Could Dead Of Night be the sleeper hit of 2010?
A recent MTV.com poll asked readers to pick which of next year’s comic book movies they’re most looking forward to, and the answer wasn’t all that surprising. Iron Man 2 garnered 53% of the vote, while Kick-Ass and Scott Pilgrim Vs. The World netted 11% each.
But logging in at a respectable 7% was Dead Of Night, based on the comics starring Dylan Dog, a London-based supernatural investigator whose adventures have been translated into more than a dozen languages. While that may not seem like a big number, what makes it impressive is Dead Of Night had been left off the poll, meaning the 7% was the result of fan outpouring and a write-in campaign.
Despite its initial disadvantage, the Kevin Munroe-directed film, which stars Brandon Routh (Superman Returns) as Dog, took a larger percentage of the vote than The Green Hornet,

Yet Another 'Spider-Man 4' Rumor: John Malkovich as the Villain?
7 December 2009 9:30 PM, PST
We're not going to be so flippant as to dismiss this out of hand, because it could very well be proven accurate for all we know, but a new rumor about Spider-Man 4 villains has surfaced today, and this time it concerns John Malkovich and Anne Hathaway, both of whom are allegedly in talks to play villains in Sam Raimi's new film.
Movieline was speaking with its sources and was told that Malkovich will play The Vulture, one of Spider-Man's long-established nemeses who can fly through the air and brandish his sharp wings to attack our favorite web slinger.
Hathaway's involvement was previously rumored, with the scuttlebutt being that she would likely play Felicia Hardy, an occasional crime fighter and Peter Parker's past girlfriend who eventually becomes The Black Cat.
Not exactly. Movieline has learned that while Felicia Hardy will indeed [allegedly] be in the movie, the character will not become The Black Cat,

MGM Equates 'Red Dawn' Remake with 'Call of Duty'
7 December 2009 9:25 PM, PST
At the THR Women in Hollywood Power 100 breakfast last Friday, MGM head Mary Parent told The Hollywood Reporter's Risky Business Blog that she has been closely monitoring production of the studio's Red Dawn remake, and describes it as "a live-action 'Call of Duty'" video game.
Parent said that after viewing dailies she believes first-time director Dan Bradley, who choreographed stunt work for the 'Bourne' and 'Spider-Man' movies, "has really outdone himself."
The original Red Dawn was the Cold War brainchild of writer-director John Milius, who devised a World War III invasion of America by the Soviets and Cubans. The film followed the scrappy insurgency of a group of Midwestern teenagers who take on their high school mascot name — "Wolverines!" — as a rallying cry of resistance.
Red Dawn is slated to arrive in theaters on November 24, 2010.

Future Iraq Movie by the Wachowskis?
7 December 2009 9:20 PM, PST
Are the Wachowskis making a film about Iraq? Does pundit Arianna Huffington appear in it, albeit aged to look 90 years older?
Such questions were raised after these recent tweets from Huffington’s Twitter account:
- It's a wrap! With Andy and Lana Wachowski at the end of a great shoot
- http://twitpic.com/skj0e - Profile shot from the futuristic movie on Iraq.
- http://twitpic.com/skira - Do u want to know what I'll look like in 90 years? Here's a shot from the set of the Wachowskis' futuristic movie.
The Wachowskis are rumored to be adapting "Cloud Atlas", the David Mitchell book containing six stories, two of which are set in either the near-future or a post-Apocalyptic world. However, neither description of those chapters sounds like what Huffington tweeted over.
Chud.com sounds pretty confident that she was participating in test camera shots, not the next sci-fi blockbuster,

'Dark Shadows' To Shoot Next Fall
7 December 2009 9:05 PM, PST
It sounds like Dark Shadows is definitely back on schedule, albeit a little more than a year later than originally anticipated.
According to Sci Fi Wire, producer Graham King said the film would be in production by next fall. Producer Richard Zanuk previously said work on Dark Shadows would begin in summer 2009.
The movie adaptation of the classic 1960’s gothic soap opera, which featured vampires, werewolves, ghosts, and other assorted creatures, will be directed by Tim Burton as his post-Alice in Wonderland project. Not surprisingly, Johnny Depp, who teamed with Burton on Edward Scissorhands, Ed Wood, Sweeney Todd and the upcoming Alice will star as the brooding vampire Barnabas Collins.
Burton is finishing post-production on Alice in Wonderland. As such, King said he is already prepping production on Dark Shadows with screenwriters, to make it easier for Burton to slide into it next year.

Ryan Reynolds' Dream 'Deadpool' Director is Quentin Tarantino
6 December 2009 10:00 PM, PST
Last Wednesday we reported that Quentin Tarantino had been offered the opportunity to helm a 'Green Lantern' film prior to Martin Campbell's involvement or the current film's script being prepared. Though the thought of directing an existing superhero franchise would have appealed to the Inglourious Basterds director in his 20s, he told MTV at the time that he's subsequently moved on and is only interested in developing his own original material...even if that means original superheroes.
That hasn't stopped actor Ryan Reynolds from adding Tarantino to his wish list for Marvel's Deadpool film, however. The Vancouver-native has been meeting with writers for the upcoming Deadpool spin-off, but thus far no director is attached to the project.
"You think directors for a movie like this and you immediately picture [Quentin] Tarantino or somebody like that," Reynolds explained to MTV.
"Obviously Tarantino is a guy that likes to direct his own material,

'The Forgotten' Adds Elisha Cuthbert to Cast
6 December 2009 9:55 PM, PST
Canadian-born actress Elisha Cuthbert, perhaps best known for playing Kim Bauer on Fox's 24, has joined ABC's The Forgotten cast in a recurring role, which begins in February of next year.
Cuthbert will play Maxine Denver, a strong and successful Chicago professional who is forced to put her skepticism of "amateur detectives" aside when The Forgotten Network begins investigating a case close to home.
If you haven't seen it, the series focuses on a team of dedicated amateurs The Forgotten Network who work on murder cases involving unidentified victims. After the police have given up, this group, led by Alex Donovan (Christian Slater), must first solve the puzzle of the victim's identity in order to then help catch the killer. These are citizen volunteers solving extraordinary crimes. Their persistence and compassion for the cases put them on a personal and emotional journey that focuses on giving names back to the deceased.

30 Years Ago Today 'Star Trek' Debuted on the Big Screen
6 December 2009 9:50 PM, PST
Happy Anniversary 'Star Trek'!
On this day in 1979, Paramount Pictures released Star Trek: The Motion Picture in theaters, thus beginning three decades of 'Star Trek' on the silver screen, and culminating in this year's reboot of the franchise with director Jj Abrams' Star Trek. One might also argue that the relative financial success of Star Trek: The Motion Picture also paved the way for the franchise's return to television with Star Trek: The Next Generation in 1987.
Star Trek: The Motion Picture didn't begin as a feature film, however. The erstwhile series' extraordinary popularity in syndication prompted Paramount Pictures and Trek creator Gene Roddenberry to begin developing a new 'Star Trek Phase II' series in May 1975—part of the cornerstone of a new television network Paramount had planned. Work on the series stalled, however, when the proposed Paramount Television Service folded.
Following the landmark success of Star Wars

No 'Resident Evil: Afterlife' Until 2011
6 December 2009 9:45 PM, PST
Screen Gems wanted to have Resident Evil: Afterlife in theaters by Labor Day 2010, but the film has hit some snags. So what does the studio do? It calls on a Priest, of course.
Apparently, the 3-D post-production work on the fourth Resident Evil is shaping up to take longer than anticipated, so the film has been pushed back until January 14, 2011, ShockTillYouDrop.com reports. To fill the gap, Screen Gems has moved the vampire thriller Priest up to next Labor Day.
Whether or not the move shows confidence in Priest, a manga adaptation starring Paul Bettany, at least director Paul W.S. Anderson gets a few more months for his Resident Evil return. In Resident Evil: Afterlife, series heroine Alice joins forces with other humans to battle zombies in a post-Apocalyptic Los Angeles.
With the move, now Anderson and star Milla Jovovich are scheduled to go up against The Cabin in the Woods,

'War Birds' Sitting on the Runway
6 December 2009 9:40 PM, PST
Aircraft enthusiasts, take note: War Birds, a new action-adventure film featuring real aircraft and aerial stunts, is about to take flight. It will mark the debut feature of Michael Chait, who also wrote the story.
J. Todd Harris, one of the producers of the 2008 wine documentary Bottle Shock, and Tron Legacy screenwriter Richard Jefferies will polish up the script, according to The Hollywood Reporter. Along with Chait, they will produce the film for Michigan-based Tmu Pictures.
War Birds will revolve around an airman-turned-airshow re-enactment pilot pulled into the underground world of illegal, dangerous real-life aerial combat. Along with modern military helicopters and jets, the air sequences will be shot using authentic P-51 Mustangs, P-38 Lightnings, F4U Corsairs and a B-17 Flying Fortress. Shooting is scheduled to begin next summer in Michigan, with Titanic cinematographer Russell Carpenter serving as visual consultant.

Real-life Dracula 'Vlad' Getting a Movie
6 December 2009 9:35 PM, PST
Brad Pitt, who starred in the 1994 film Interview with a Vampire, could be taking on another Nosferatu-based project, this time for Twilight studio Summit.
The project is called Vlad, and will center on Vlad the Impaler, the erstwhile ruler of Wallachia and inspiration behind the Dracula myth. Music video director and photographer Anthony Mandler is set to helm, and the film will star… not Pitt, who is only serving as producer.
According to The Hollywood Reporter’s Heat Vision Blog, Summit is hoping to fashion a visually edgy, radical period action movie that will announce Mandler’s talent, similar to how 300 put Zack Snyder on the map. Mandler has directed videos for Rhianna, the Killers and Eminem, and Summit executives were reportedly bowled over by the reel he prepared.
Vlad III the Impaler (circa 1431–1476) was best known for his independent policy towards the Ottoman Empire, the expansionism of which he resisted,

New 'Avatar' Featurettes, One Touting 'Unobtainium'
6 December 2009 9:30 PM, PST
20th Century Fox has released two new featurettes for James Cameron's forthcoming sci-fi epic Avatar. You can check out the first by using the player below. The second can be viewed by clicking on the Video tab above, and comes from canalplus, where additional Avatar videos can be found.
The second video plays out like a National Geographic nature documentary, and is hosted by Sigourney Weaver, who also stars in Avatar as Grace. This featurette is fascinating and definitely showcases a lot of the technical brilliance that James Cameron has wrought with the film.
One thing puzzles us, however, and that's the description of a rare element — likely that which the Earth visitors in the film are after — known as unobtainium. If you're a sci-fi geek at all, then you know that unobtainium is the joking catchall phrase employed whenever an unknown pseudo-scientific substance is required in science fiction.
