Richard Dreyfuss Battles New Jaws in 'Piranha 3-D'

The folks over at Bloody-Disgusting unearthed some photos from the forthcoming 3-D remake of Piranha, while at the American Film Market. The images give us our first look at cast member Richard Dreyfuss. And unless we miss our guess, you'll observe that those clothes he's wearing look awfully familiar; as if he raided one Matt Hooper's closet.

We just wanna know: is he driving the boat, too?

Here's the setup for the new film: After a sudden underwater tremor sets free scores of the prehistoric man-eating fish, an unlikely group of strangers must band together to stop themselves from becoming fish food for the area's new razor-toothed residents. But our heroine (Elisabeth Shue) is seriously outnumbered, and with only one chance to save the lake and her family from totally being devoured, she must risk everything to destroy the aquatic carnivores herself.

We're a little stymied as to why Dreyfuss »

Call it 'Blood Simple', But Funnier

Zhang Yimou promises some comedy in his remake of Blood Simple, which will hit theaters in China on December 11.

In an interview with the Chinese web portal Sina.com, subsequently translated by the Associated Press, the director of Hero and House of Flying Daggers described his film as starting off as a comedy, then gradually morphing into a thriller.

"The audience is watching the movie happily, laughing out loud, then it slowly changes, but the transition has to be funny," Zhang said. "That's very hard to do. I think I did a decent job. This is the first time I tried to bridge the two styles."

The film, called San Qiang Pai An Jing Qi in Chinese, centers around a noodle shop owner who plans to kill his cheating wife and her lover. As was the case in Blood Simple, the plot spirals out of control; however, the original revolved around a Texas bar owner. »

Capt. Janeway in 'Star Trek' Sequel?

She hasn’t even seen the new Star Trek film yet, but Kate Mulgrew, who played Captain Kathryn Janeway in the Star Trek: Voyager TV series, already wants in on the rebooted franchise.

Mulgrew's Captain Janeway also had a cameo in the 2002 movie Star Trek: Nemesis. When asked if she would consider a role in the rebooted Trek film series by J.J. Abrams, she responded, "I would, I'd love to return to Janeway. I'd love to do her in a movie."

Writers Roberto Orci and Alex Kurtzman are currently developing a storyline for the Trek sequel, and in a separate interview, Abrams said any worry about bringing back established characters was negated by the first film’s success. In this summer’s Star Trek, Leonard Nimoy, who originated the Spock role, played an older, time-traveling version of himself.

According to Coventry Telegraph, Mulgrew admitted she has yet to watch Abrams' movie, »

For Rockwell, 'Iron Man 2' Means Hammer Time

If anything called War Machine is going to be built, doesn’t it seem natural that someone named Hammer should be involved?

Apparently, that is exactly the case in the much-anticipated Iron Man 2. MTV reports that Sam Rockwell, who plays Iron Man/Tony Stark’s rival Justin Hammer, recently commented on the nature of his character’s relationship with James "Rhodey" Rhodes, Stark’s friend and confidant.

Comic book fans know that Rhodes eventually dons the War Machine armor. However, they also know that Hammer has frequently clashed with Iron Man, and has tried to destroy Rhodes on numerous occasions, too.

"Don and I, we're working together," Rockwell said of the pair's relationship. "He works with me in spite of some of my personality flaws."

When pressed for additional details about those "flaws," Rockwell called Hammer, "a bit of a shark," and said Rhodes’ partnership with him is born of necessity, »

This is Not Your Kid's 'Christmas Carol'

Charles Dicken's "A Christmas Carol" has been retold so many times and in so many forms since its first printing in 1843 that it would be difficult to come up with a new way to tell this most famous of Christmas tales.  And after such classic rebrandings as Mickey’s Christmas Carol, Scrooged and less classic remakes like The Ghosts of Girlfriends Past, filmmakers had few avenues left to explore with this tale of redemption and turkey. That is, until director Robert Zemeckis saw an opportunity to take a story we all know and turn it into a 3-D extravaganza that actually skews much closer to Charles Dicken’s original text than most of the reincarnations before it.

With little alteration, this version of "A Christmas Carol" stays true to its source material. Ebeneezer Scrooge (played by a reigned-in Jim Carrey) is the original grumpy old man—a money lender who »

ABC Offers 'V' for Vendetta

ABC's reboot of Kenneth Johnson's '80s miniseries V (which originally aired on NBC) debuted last night, and for the most part, it was pretty entertaining.

In less than an hour, writer/exec producer Scott Peters (The 4400) sets up the gambit—visitors from another planet who come to Earth in search of natural resources, promising peace and prosperity, and quickly polarize humanity into those who are taken in by the Visitors' claims of benevolence, and those who immediately distrust them.

Whether wisely or not, Peters chose to be very economical with time and got things off to a blistering start. Consequently, the entire setup happens within the first installment. Unlike the original '80s show, which took more time to reveal the Visitors' true nature, the new series took us from arrival, to suspicion, to resistance, to revelation about the aliens' reptilian nature, all in the first episode. »

Kevin Williamson Talks New 'Scream' Trilogy

Kevin Williamson, who is working on the next 'Scream' trilogy, recently took time out to speak with MTV about the fourth installment in the franchise.

"The fourth one is an ensemble," said Williamson about whether the new movie will once again focus on Neve Campbell's character Sidney. "It'll take place right now, 10 years later, and it's going to take place in [Sidney Prescott's hometown of] Woodsboro. We'll have our three main characters, and we'll be introducing several more."

The three characters are Sidney (Campbell), Gale (Courteney Cox) and Dewey (David Arquette). "We'll also be introducing a little group, a little ensemble of new castmembers. That'll take us through the next three," he explained.

Williamson added that the characters will not conveniently forget about the murders from the first three movies. "I guess I'll just have to be very aware of the fact that we're a '4' and that we're beating a dead dog, »

'Arabian Knights 3-D' Headed for the Cinema

Chuck Russell (The Mask, The Scorpion King) plans to direct a 3D remake of "Arabian Nights" that is targeting a production start date of April, 2010, reports Variety.

In a new spin on the classic, the story follows a young commander who, after his king is killed in a palace coup, joins forces with Sinbad, Aladdin and his genie to rescue Scheherazade and her kingdom from dark powers.

"Through the use of a new generation of visual technologies, we will be able to quite literally take audiences around the world on a magic carpet ride," Russell said.

The new film is projecting an estimated budget of $70M.

Some of the best-known stories of The Nights, particularly "Aladdin's Wonderful Lamp", "Ali Baba and the Forty Thieves" and "The Seven Voyages of Sinbad the Sailor", while almost certainly genuine Middle-Eastern folk tales, were actually not part of The Nights in the original Arabic versions, »

'Paranormal Activity' Sequel Under Consideration

2 November 2009 9:30 PM, PST

Paramount Pictures is planning a sequel to Paranormal Activity, which cost less than $15K to make and returned a whopping $84.6M in ticket sales.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, CEO Philippe Dauman said Tuesday morning in Viacom's earnings call that the movie has been one of those surprise hits that comes along only rarely.

Given that a follow-up film wouldn't have the same element of surprise as Paranormal, it will be key to craft a smart approach to a sequel, he contended. "Our team will come up with the right creative and marketing approach."

According to the trade, when asked by an analyst if the Paranormal model of a low-cost, high-box office film could be easily replicated with other releases, Dauman said no, citing the amount of time that had passed between The Blair Witch and Paranormal Activity. »

'The Crow' Remake Starts Casting

2 November 2009 9:25 PM, PST

The following seems like a non-story, but things have been quiet around the planned reboot of The Crow lately, so I figured, why not remind people it’s actually happening?

According to The Geek Files over at Coventry Telegraph, executives at Relativity Media are excited about the script turned in by director Stephen Norrington, and the project has entered the casting stages. The Crow, for those unfamiliar with the property, revolves around a rock musician murdered with his girlfriend; he returns from the dead one year later, seeking revenge on those responsible.

Originally a graphic novel, Alex Proyas directed the 1994 movie version starring Brandon Lee as the titular character. Three movie sequels and a TV show followed, but by 2005’s The Crow: Wicked Prayer, the series was going direct-to-video.

When interviewed, Norrington hinted his version of The Crow would be realistic and almost documentary-like. This would be a significant contrast from the gothic, »

Wes Anderson in The Final Frontier?

2 November 2009 9:20 PM, PST

Recently, Wes Anderson offered some hints about his post-Fantastic Mr. Fox project, as well as his dream location for a movie shoot.

At the Hollywood premiere of Fantastic Mr. Fox, Anderson confirmed that his next film will be based on an original idea, unlike his latest, which was adapted from a Roald Dahl book.

"The next thing, I have an idea for something that’s just my own," he told Access Hollywood. "But I would like to do more adaptations. It’s nice to reach a point in the story and say, ‘What happens in the book?’ and you can just look in that and get your answer."

However, he confirmed that his next project would not be a science-fiction film, making it unlikely that Anderson would get to explore outer space, which he expressed an interest in doing. "I’d like to do a movie in space," Anderson said. »

Marmaduke Sounds Like...Owen Wilson

2 November 2009 9:15 PM, PST

Owen Wilson has signed on to voice the Great Dane Marmaduke for 20th Century Fox's adaptation of the long-running comic strip, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

The actor's attachment to the project marks the last piece of the puzzle for the live-action/CG movie.

The trade reports that the story contains elements of Fox's Marley & Me (which also starred Wilson), and will follow a family named the Winslows who move from Kansas to Orange County with their dog Marmaduke, a slobbery pooch who creates chaos wherever he goes.

In adapting the strip created in 1954 by Brad Anderson and Phil Leeming, the script by Tim Rasmussen and Vince Di Meglio sees Marmaduke navigate a volatile Mutts vs. Pedigrees turf war, woo the purebred of his dreams and overcome a fall from grace.

Judy Greer, Lee Pace and William H. Macy play the humans, while Fergie, Emma Stone, George Lopez, Christopher Mintz-Plasse, »

Willem Dafoe and the 'Spider-Man' Franchise

2 November 2009 9:10 PM, PST

At the end of the day, we're not sure there's even a story here, because if there is, it strikes us a story about nothing. Here's how it goes: MTV speaks to Willem Dafoe. Dafoe acknowledges that his return to the 'Spider-Man' franchise as Green Goblin "isn't exactly a certainty" (when was it ever even under consideration?). Then Dafoe remarks that he "think(s) it's possible."

Sure, flying cars are possible, too...but no-one expects them anytime soon, if ever.

Dafoe's return to the franchise is problematic, chiefly because of his character's death in the first Spider-Man. And while Dafoe has reprised the role in the two subsequent outings as a mirror-bound apparition seen by his son, Harry...with Harry dead as well, there's no realistic way to resurrect the Goblin—assuming Raimi even wanted to in the first place.

"I think it's possible," Dafoe told MTV, adding, »

George Clooney Circles 'Descendants'

2 November 2009 9:05 PM, PST

According to Variety, George Clooney is circling the family dramedy The Descendants, set to be directed by Alexander Payne, the man behind such films as Election, About Schmidt and Sideways. Circling typically means that either Clooney is still deciding, and/or negotiating terms...or that the project is in difficulty and the actor may be preparing to descend in and pick up the project remains.

The story for The Descendents concerns a wealthy landowner who takes his two daughters on a search for his wife's lover in the hopes of keeping his family together.

Penned by Nat Faxon and Jim Rash, the screenplay is based on a novel by Kaui Hart Hemmings.

The Descendants, which marks Payne's first feature in five years, is scheduled to begin lensing in February in Hawaii. Fox Searchlight will distribute.

The story sounds a bit improbable for a Clooney film, frankly. It's hard to imagine »

New 'V' Promo Trailer and International Marketing Images

1 November 2009 10:25 PM, PST

ABC's V pilot kicks off tomorrow night, and we've got a few goodies to whet your appetite until then, including a new promo trailer and several international marketing images for the series that are kind of fun. You can check out all of it below.

It's been more than 25 years since V first aired back in the '80s, but anticipation for this rebooted property is high, and critics have been praiseworthy of the pilot.

Elizabeth Mitchell (Lost) stars as the show's new heroine, doleful FBI agent Erica Evans. She's the series' chief protagonist, a status she shares with the slightly more buoyant, but ultimately no less distraught Father Jack (Joel Gretsch), a Catholic priest undergoing a crisis of faith. Scott Wolf (Party of Five) joins the cast as an ambitious TV journalist.

The aliens are as attractive and agreeable as before. Fans of the original Kenneth Johnson miniseries of »

Ian McKellen Has Finally Read 'Hobbit' Script

1 November 2009 10:20 PM, PST

Everyone expects Ian McKellen to don Gandalf's robes for director Guillermo del Toro's forthcoming Hobbit movies. And, of course, to do that, he needs to read the script to get a sense of just what's expected of his character.

And he has. Finally.

Speaking with Sci Fi Wire, McKellan — who was predictably circumspect in statements about the story — said that del Toro, along with longtime Lord of the Rings collaborators Fran Walsh and Philippa Boyens, have tailored the script specifically with him in mind.

"As Peter has said, they loved writing Gandalf [for The Hobbit] because they knew who they were writing him for," McKellen told Sci Fi Wire last week while promoting AMC's reboot of The Prisoner.

"There are a lot of characters in The Hobbit including, crucially, Bilbo, and they don't know who's going to play Bilbo," McKellen added. "So it's extremely attractive that this part has been written for me. »

Joss Whedon Tosses Hat in the Ring for 'Terminator' Rights

1 November 2009 10:15 PM, PST

As we reported earlier today, Halcyon Holding Group will be auctioning off the rights to the 'Terminator' franchise later this month. The expectation is that it should net at least $60M...and several major studios and players have shown interest.

Plus one.

Buffy, Firefly and Dollhouse creator Joss Whedon says he's ready to take over this franchise as well, and he's got $10,000 to prove it. In an open — and very tongue in cheek — letter to Halcyon Holding Group, reproduced over at Deadline.com, Whedon promises he will write a check today to take the 'Terminator' rights off Halcyon's hands.

"No, you didn't miscount," Whedon says. "That's four -- Four! -- zeroes after that one. That's to show you I mean business."

Whedon goes on to describe exactly what he'd do if he were in charge of the franchise...
