Roger Ebert: An appreciation of the departed icon
5 April 2013 5:42 PM, PDT
When Roger Ebert passed away on Thursday, we lost someone who much more than just a film critic. We lost someone who came to embody a love for cinema that encompassed almost every angle of the medium imaginable. To start with his main occupation, he forever changed what film critics were and what reviews could do. Rather than just going over the plot of a film and critiquing the performances and technical aspects of it, Ebert dug deep into films to find their message and, in many cases, their faults as well. In doing so, he took film criticism to a whole new level. -Insertgroups:12- There was nothing like reading a favorable Roger Ebert review of a good movie. He looked deep into the film for meanings and truths that most people wouldn't even consider thinking about, but also presented these in a way that respected his reading audience. »
Thanks, Roger Ebert: You changed my life
5 April 2013 5:03 PM, PDT
It's taken me some time to come to terms with the death of film critic Roger Ebert. It's funny how such a loss can affect you, even when you never met the deceased. Yet I feel as if I've known Roger Ebert my whole life, having grown up watching his TV show, first with Gene Siskel and then with Richard Roeper, as religiously as most kids would view Saturday morning cartoons, and reading his print reviews every week. In this way I feel as if I've lost one of my dearest and closest friends. -Insertgroups:12- My relationship with Roger Ebert began at the age of 12, when I picked up a copy of his newly published "The Great Movies" (2002) at the local library. The book was a collection of 100 essays on films he felt would serve as "a tour of the landmarks of the first century of cinema." These were »

Is playing 'Carly' a good luck charm at Daytime Emmys?
5 April 2013 9:26 AM, PDT
The Daytime Emmys love a "Carly." This name has an unusually strong track record at these awards. To date, five women have earned a total of 15 nominations and six wins for playing a character by that name. And even those who failed to win for that role eventually claimed Emmys later in their career, so playing Carly, it seems, always pays off. -Insertgroups:12- Among the most successful actresses to take the name was Maura West. She debuted in the role of Carly Tenney on CBS's now defunct "As the World Turns" in 1995, and though she didn't earn her first Emmy bid until 2001, she was a perennial nominee after that, earning two nominations as a supporting actress and then five more as a lead. She won Best Actress twice (2007 and 2010). Crystal Chappell first played Carly Manning on NBC's "Days of Our Lives" from 1990 to 1993, but didn't get on Emmy's radar »

'New Girl' star Jake Johnson is new guy in Comedy Actor Emmy race
4 April 2013 7:43 PM, PDT
Jake Johnson is the latest actor to gamble on a leap up to Emmy's lead race for Best Comedy Actor. Johnson, who plays underachieving bartender Nick Miller on the sophomore comedy "New Girl," submitted in supporting last year but wasn't nominated. His co-star Max Greenfield earned a bid in that category, but lost to "Modern Family's" Eric Stonestreet. -Insertgroups:12- Johnson follows a string of actors who have promoted themselves in recent years. Adam Scott ("Parks and Recreation"), Garret Dillahunt ("Raising Hope"), and Ed Helms ("The Office") all made the move, though none of them managed to break through. One actor made a successful transition last year -- after Charlie Sheen's dismissal from "Two and a Half Men," Jon Cryer jumped from supporting to lead, which he won in one of the night's biggest upsets. Lead-acting races are usually the most competitive at the Emmys. Howev »
News Nuggets: Film critic Roger Ebert dies at age 70
4 April 2013 11:44 AM, PDT
Pulitzer Prize-winning film critic Roger Ebert dies at age 70: "Mr. Ebert’s struggle with cancer, starting in 2002, gave him an altogether different public image — as someone who refused to surrender to illness. Though he had operations for cancer of the thyroid, salivary glands and chin, lost his ability to eat, drink and speak (he was fed through a tube and a prosthesis partly obscured the loss of much of his chin) and became a gaunter version of his once-portly self, he continued to write reviews and commentary and published a cookbook he had started, on meals that could be made with a rice cooker." New York Times Matthew Weiner explains why Jennifer Lawrence had the perfect acceptance speech at the Oscars. Vanity Fair Taylor Swift and Tim McGraw will perform "Highway Don't Care" together at the Acm Awards. Digital Spy Damaged Oscar won in 1935 for "The Scoundrel" nevertheless sold at auction for over $100,000. Deadli. »

Last year, the CNN channel Hln rode to the rescue of the Daytime Emmys and aired their awards which had been left without a broadcast home for the first time ever. The show was such a success that the cablecaster is presenting the kudocast again this year. The show will air live from the Beverly Hilton hotel beginning at 8 p.m. Edt on Sunday June 16. In making the announcement, Hln exec Scot Safon said last year's ceremony "was the #1 most-watched, regularly-scheduled non-news broadcast in the network’s history, and received terrific viewer feedback both on-air and online. Seven years after being cancelled by Fox, "Arrested Development" returns for a fourth season on the streaming service Netflix. All 15 episodes will be available for viewing on May 26. That is just five days before the end of the eligibility period for this year's Emmys. -Insertgroups:12- The show may not have been a ratings hit but it was a winner with Emmy voters taking home Best Comedy Series for its first season in 2004. It contended for that prize again in 2005 and 2006 but was bested by "Everybody Loves Raymond" and "The Office" respectively. It also scored five additional Emmy wins: Best Casting, Best Editing, Best Directing and two for Best Writing. Such is the love for this laffer that it already sits at #4 in our predictions for Best Comedy Series. Nominations for the 28th annual edition of the Lucille Lortel Awards were announced Wednesday. Signature Theater's revival of August Wilson's 1990 Pulitzer-winning play "The Piano Lesson" leads with six nominations while Manhattan Theater Club's new musical "Murder Ballad" reaped five bids. Will Jimmy Fallon bring Emmy glory back to 'Tonight Show'?
3 April 2013 12:44 PM, PDT
Last year, Jimmy Fallon won an Emmy for returning to "Saturday Night Live" as a guest host. And his talker "Late Night with Jimmy Fallon" picked up its second successive Emmy bid for Best Variety Series. While he lost that race to "Daily Show with Jon Stewart" -- which extended its record winning streak to 10 -- Fallon could find himself at the podium in 2014 as the new host of "The Tonight Show." On Wednesday, NBC confirmed that Fallon will be taking over the late night staple from Jay Leno in the fall of 2014. Leno, who took over from Johnny Carson in 1992, exited once before -- in the fall of 2009 -- but that absence lasted only nine months as Conan O'Brien proved to be a ratings flop. Will Channing Tatum ('Magic Mike') win MTV Movie Award for revealing Male Performance?
3 April 2013 6:46 AM, PDT
For the first time in four years, the Male Performance award won't be going to the star of a teen film franchise. Last year, Josh Hutcherson won this category for "The Hunger Games" and will no doubt contend again next year for "Catching Fire," the upcoming second installment in that trilogy. However, two-time champ Robert Pattinson (2010, 2011) was snubbed for his farewell appearance as Edward Cullen in "Breaking Dawn: Part 2," the final film in the "Twilight" series. -Insertgroups:12- Past category contender Channing Tatum is likely to win for laying himself bare in "Magic Mike." Recent Oscar nominee Bradley Cooper ("Silver Linings Playbook") is in second place, with one editor and 30% of users backing his bid. That support gives him odds of 12 to 5. »
