Oscars quiz: Can you spot the only best actress nominee?

31 October 2009 5:10 PM, PDT

Just one of the four roles pictured below earned an acting bid for its star. Which one? Here's the answer. Answer: Eleven years after she won in the supporting race for "Cactus Flower," Goldie Hawn was nominated in lead for a featherweight comic role widely dismissed as not worthy of the Oscars' attention in 1980. The other three performances pictured in this quiz were all iconic screen turns outrageously snubbed by academy members. "My Fair Lady" won eight Academy Awards in 1964, including best picture, but its "lady" wasn't even nominated, probably because voters resented the fact that Audrey Hepburn lip-synched to Marni Nixon singing. Rosalind Russell never won an Oscar, but was nominated four times. Unfortunately, she was snubbed for her greatest role — as the brazen stage mom Rose in "Gypsy." The role is so dramatically showy that it usually nabs awards attention. On Broadway, Angela Lansbury (1975), Tyne Daly (1990) and Patti LuPone »

Oscar voters get three more DVDs: 'Coco Before Chanel,' 'Damned United,' 'Whatever Works'

30 October 2009 8:45 AM, PDT

On Thursday, Oscar voters received the second, third and fourth DVD screeners sent to the full academy — all three from Sony Pictures Classics, which thus becomes the first major studio out of the gate: "Coco Before Chanel," "The Damned United" and "Whatever Works." Other Spc screeners ("An Education," "The Last Station," "Broken Embraces," "White Ribbon") will be sent later in derby season, a studio rep promises. "A Prophet" is eligible only in the race for best foreign-language film, which requires theatrical screenings, so DVDs of that will not be shipped. The only previous DVD sent to all academy members was "Anvil! The Story of Anvil." Some bloggers reported that "The Messenger" was also sent, but that's not true. At least not yet. It was sent to journalists, but a copy won't be shipped to academy members for another week or so. Economic hard times may severely limit the number of »

Gutsy Envelope gurus predict Oscar's best picture nominees

28 October 2009 10:18 AM, PDT

I asked members of The Envelope's editorial team to predict the Oscar nominees for best picture and here's who rose to the challenge — our bloggers Pete Hammond (Notes on a Season) and Paul Gaita (The Circuit) and editor of our print edition Elena Howe. I let Pete get away with a bit of waffling. One of his predictions is "a Meryl Streep comedy directed by a woman — 'It's Complicated' or 'Julie & Julia.' " He adds these comments, "Yes, 'Avatar,' 'Serious Man' booster, kill me now. 'Last Station' and 'An Education' remain possibilities too, but are more likely in acting and screenplay, although certainly in the mix for best picture. Keep in mind this is still a very fluid situation, still very much up in the air and the average academy member has yet to see precious few, in some cases as many as nine of these top ten contenders, »
