First Full Iron Man 3 Clip

5 April 2013 10:32 AM, PDT

We’ve seen so many little moments from Iron Man 3 in the raft of teasers, trailers and TV spots that it’s actually a pleasant surprise to slow down and enjoy one single chunk from the film. The first proper clip features no battalion of suits, just one very angry Genius Billionaire Playboy Philanthropist calling out what he sees as a bully. Yes, this is Robert Downey Jr’s Tony Stark in full-on bitter mode, less taunting and more promising Ben Kingsley’s Mandarin that he’s going to find him and get vengeance for an attack on one of Stark’s closest friends. This being Tony, of course, he can’t help but let the arrogance kick in a little, leaving his home address – 10880 Malibu Point, 90265, trivia fans! – and daring the Mandarin to come get him. Which, judging by what we’ve seen in the trailers, is an invitation all too readily accepted. »

Hans Zimmer Talks Scoring Man Of Steel

5 April 2013 10:31 AM, PDT

Given his close working relationship on the Batman trilogy and beyond with Chris Nolan, it likely seemed obvious to everyone who isn’t Hans Zimmer that he’d be the natural composer to score the Nolan-produced, Zack Snyder-directed Superman pic Man Of Steel. But Zimmer, talking to CNN about taking on the project, didn’t see it that way. "A journalist asked me at an Inception party if I was going to do Superman, and I hadn't even heard of it, so I went, 'Absolutely no way,'" Zimmer says. "Somehow in the noise of that party, that got misconstrued as 'Absolutely Hans is doing it.' It was all over the Internet that I was doing Superman, and I'd never even met Zack! So I phoned him up, 'I'm really sorry, this wasn't my doing, this is a misunderstanding.' And he said, 'Oh! It's great that you phoned. »

Two New Elysium Stills Appear Online

5 April 2013 7:14 AM, PDT

Alongside better-known names like Matt Damon, Jodie Foster and Sharlto Copley, Neill Blomkamp has cast Brazilian actress Alice Braga in his follow-up to District 9, Elysium, so maybe it should come as no surprise that two new stills from the film have arrived online via a South American newspaper's website. The stills themselves don't reveal all that much about Blomkamp's sci-fi class struggle, so here's some background for you: the world in 2159 is split into two - the ruined surface of the planet where the poor live and the floating super-city known as Elysium where the rich swim around in swimming pools full of cash (possibly).Damon plays a dying ex-convict on the surface desperate to make his way to Elysium - a man so desperate that he's willing to take on a dangerous mission that'll see him square off against Foster's Secretary Delacourt in the process. Oh, and he'll »

Oblivion Gets A UK Premiere

5 April 2013 3:02 AM, PDT

A lone soul traversing a weather-beaten planet to keep the flame of hope flickering for humanity... no, not the plot of Oblivion but the publicity tour for Tom Cruise's latest sci-fi behemoth. After Dublin and Moscow, London was the port-of-call for the actor, his co-star OIga Kurylenko and director Joseph Kosinski as they spread the word about their post-apocalyptic extravaganza. The pair braved suitably apocalyptic windchill at the BFI IMAX to meet fans and tell journos what to expect when the movie hits the big screen next week. Oblivion finds Cruise as Jack Harper, a drone repairman working on a war-ravaged, post-apocalyptic Earth. After years of conflict with a terrifying alien race known as the Scavs, humanity has triumphed, but at a terrible cost to our planet.  Oblivion hits cinemas on April 10. Wrap your ears around its M83-produced score in the meantime. brightcove.createExperiences(); »

Omar Sy Enters The Candy Store

4 April 2013 11:17 PM, PDT

Stephen Gaghan's new action-thriller, Candy Store, has picked up another lead in the shape of French actor and star of Untouchable, Omar Sy. This one is likely to be a lot less heart-warming though, with Sy shaping up to play the villain of the piece, a gangland big noise - a 'Cold War consigliere' no less - with a pimpish past.Sy joins Jason Clarke, who signed up back in February, in a pairing of two actors who couldn't be hotter if they actually had smoke coming out. The story, co-written by Gaghan and Shannon Burke and set in Brighton Beach, Brooklyn, pitches Clarke as an ex-covert operative who discovers that the organisation he's dedicated himself to fighting has inveigled its way onto his home turf. Hmm. Clearly these people haven't seen Zero Dark Thirty. The Gaghan co-produced flick will be distributed by Lionsgate in the Us and Good Universe overseas. »

DiCaprio To Produce HBO's Gorbachev

4 April 2013 9:50 PM, PDT

It's a big day for Naked Gun alumni. First the Queen scored a BAFTA and now it's Mikhail Gorbachev turn. The former Soviet premier is going to be the subject of an HBO Films movie produced by Leonardo DiCaprio and Tom Hanks. Frank Drebin would smell some kind of conspiracy.Gorbachev will be written by John Shiban, erstwhile showrunner on AMC's Hell On Wheels, and major on his role in shepherding democracy into the Soviet block via his twin policies of glasnost and perestroika. Gorbachev himself has served as a consultant on the project which will ensure either high levels of accuracy or scenes where his character gets to kiss really hot girls. We're guessing the former.DiCaprio, who met Gorbachev while working on environmental doc The 11th Hour, will produce under his Appian Way banner, with Tom Hanks and Gary Goetzman’s Playtone helping usher this onto the screen. »

Justin Lin Departs Fast & Furious 7

4 April 2013 6:46 PM, PDT

Can you smell burning rubber, as though something has just slammed on the brakes and come to a screeching halt? That would be because veteran Fast & Furious director Justin Lin has decided to leap from the franchise and won’t be crafting the seventh film.According to The Hollywood Reporter, this isn’t because of some huge spat between Lin and executives or Fast main man Vin Diesel, it’s simply a matter of timing. While he’s been a key component of the testosterone and Diesel-powered series since Tokyo Drift, Lin has decided that the breakneck pace Universal wants for the seventh outing won’t lead to his best work. He’s exhausted after making three entries in quick succession and has also been itching to jump on to other projects. The studio, keen to keep the gravy train rolling, wants Fast Seven in cinemas next year as opposed »

Queen Elizabeth Collects Honorary BAFTA

4 April 2013 6:33 PM, PDT

She's been a Bond girl, thrown the first pitch in Naked Gun and helped inspire Helen Mirren to an Oscar, but we suspect none of those things unpinned BAFTA's decision to garland Queen Elizabeth with an honorary gong at a ceremony last night. Instead, the esteemed film body recognised the Queen's long-standing support for filmmaking in the UK."I am delighted that this evening has given us the opportunity to give something back," BAFTA chairman John Willis explained at the Windsor Castle reception. "I have the great honour to announce that we are to present Her Majesty with an honorary BAFTA today, in recognition of her outstanding patronage of the film and television industries."Willis went on to describe Hrh as "the most memorable Bond girl yet", a reference to her (kinda) parachuting cameo in Danny Boyle's Olympics opening ceremony. We bet he'd say the same thing to Honor Blackman. »

Podcast 55: Rufus Sewell, Harmony Korine

4 April 2013 5:02 PM, PDT

All Things To All Men's Rufus Sewell refers to himself as "that twat on a horse" in his interview on this week's Empire Podcast, whereas Harmony Korine does no such thing, instead talking about James Franco fellating a gun in honour of his latest, Spring Breakers.Elsewhere, a very important discussion is blown wide open: which film director has the best voice? Also, the concept of a Grown Ups sequel is dissected and everyone resists doing a Baz Luhrmann impersonation. Just.P.S. Hear The Oblivion Soundtrack

4 April 2013 5:01 PM, PDT

Director Joseph Kosinski scored no lesser talents than Daft Punk for his first big film, Tron Legacy. Now, for his follow-up, Oblivion, he’s staying in the electronica world, and has M83 providing the sonic goodness. You can stream the entire Oblivion soundtrack over at Mashable. And the first of four clips from the film, which features Tom Cruise, is below. Oblivion finds Cruise as Jack Harper, a drone repairman working on a war-ravaged, post-apocalyptic Earth. After years of conflict with a terrifying alien race known as the Scavs, humanity has triumphed, but at a terrible cost to our planet. Now the majority of the population live in hovering cities above the surface, which is where Jack and his partner Victoria (Andrea Riseborough) want to go when his tour of duty is up. But during one seemingly routine patrol, a space pod comes crashing down containing the mysterious Julie (Olga Kurylenko »

Cumberbatch Heads For Crimson Peak

4 April 2013 1:47 PM, PDT

Team Sherlock managed to wrangle Benedict Cumberbatch and Martin Freeman back to shoot the third set of episodes, and Holmes himself has said that they’ll return for the fourth. But both men are ever in demand, with Cumberbatch headed to Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak. The endlessly effusive (and endlessly busy) del Toro is planning Peak as his follow-up to monster mash Pacific Rim (out here on July 12). The haunted house thriller is still largely under wraps, but we do know that Cumberbatch will be starring alongside Charlie Hunnam and Emma Stone in the film, which represents del Toro’s nod to movies such as The Haunting.Cameras are set to crank on the film in February next year, with del Toro already at work alongside Lucinda Coxon on a rewrite of the script he originally crafted with Matthew Robbins.Cumberbatch, meanwhile, will rarely be off our screens in the coming year, »

Roger Ebert 1942-2013

4 April 2013 1:46 PM, PDT

There are few film critics in this world that could actually claim to be an inspiration. Not that Roger Ebert ever would – he was too modest for that. But the man who wrote movies and wrote so winningly about movies has died at the age of 70. The world is a poorer place for it.Born in 1942 in Urbana, Illinois, Ebert was a writer from an early age, working as a school paper sports reporter before becoming an editor and columnist for The Daily Illini at the University of Illinois. From there, he joined the Chicago Sun-Times as a copy boy, but rose up the ranks quickly thanks to his voluminous knowledge of the cinema. He ended up as the paper’s film critic, but unlike many of his contemporaries, Ebert was also a participant in movies. He wrote Beyond The Valley Of The Dolls, Up! and Beneath The Valley Of The Ultra-Vixens »

Watch Some New Avengers Deleted Scenes

4 April 2013 1:10 PM, PDT

We’ve already seen the alternate opening/closing framing device for Avengers Assemble, but Joss Whedon was much more ruthless when it came to snipping out scenes and entire subplots from the movie. Now, with the arrival of the Marvel Cinematic Universe: Phase One, we get a look at some other bits and pieces that never made it to the final cut. Including, Hiddlestoners will be happy to see, some extra Loki. Let’s kick off with one of the longer subplots sliced out, a mini-narrative with Ashley Johnson’s unnamed waitress and Enver Gjokai’s young cop. Bear in mind that all the scenes have basic animation and rough effects. Next up is the Loki material, mostly an extension of one of his chats with Alexis Denisof (yes, that’s really him under all those prosthetics)’s The Other about the merits of ruling or destroying humanity. Then we »

Full Carrie Trailer Is Here

4 April 2013 1:09 PM, PDT

Cast your mind back to last October, when the teaser trailer for the new version of Carrie brought us mostly voice-over and just a quick glimpse of the tragic, vengeful titular high-school girl (played, in this instance, by Chloe Moretz). This time around, we get a proper introduction to the world that director Kimberly Peirce has built around her, so go and have a look. This new take on the character keeps the basic story drawn from Stephen King’s novel intact. Carrie White is an outcast at school – looked down upon by the cliquey popular girls and just wishing she could fit in.Her mother Margaret (Julianne Moore, finally seen in full religious fervour) is no help – she’s a fundamentalist who thinks pretty much everything her daughter wants out of life leads straight to eternal damnation. And she’s not above locking her in a cupboard. But Carrie has powers. »

Jon Spaihts Off Into The Black Hole

4 April 2013 11:40 AM, PDT

At WonderCon this past Saturday, Empire got the chance to sit down with Tron Legacy director Joseph Kosinski to talk about his next film, Oblivion. You can read that interview here, but Kosinski also dropped mention of one of the movies he’s attached to direct in the future: Disney’s remake of ‘70s sci-fi adventure The Black Hole. He told us that a new writer had been found for the movie and would be announced shortly. Well, the announcement has happened – PrometheusJon Spaihts is aboard.Spaihts will be taking over script work on the film, which has been in development at the Mouse House since at least 2009. Allison Janney In Talks For Tammy

4 April 2013 11:38 AM, PDT

Melissa McCarthy and co-writer/co-director/co-marriage person Ben Falcone might not have scored their dream casting core of Shirley MacLaine for road-trip comedy Tammy. But they’re gathering a perfectly great ensemble as it is, with Susan Sarandon and Mark Duplass already aboard alongside McCarthy. Allison Janney is now in talks to join them.Falcone and McCarthy are looking to kick off directing next month, working from their script. The plot finds McCarthy as a woman who loses her job and discovers her husband has been having an affair on the same day. Anchorman 2 Comedy Cameos Leak

4 April 2013 11:00 AM, PDT

It’s something of an occupational hazard in our line of work ferreting out all the film information you need. Sometimes we come across things we might not actually want to know ahead of time. Such as learning the names of some of the people turning up as cameos in Anchorman: The Legend Continues. As fair spoiler warning, Do Not Read Below the teaser trailer if you don’t want to find out. Still with us? All right: So it turns out that at least two of the original film’s supporting players will be back, as Vince Vaughn’s Wes Mantooth (“Dorothy Mantooth is a saint!”) and Luke Wilson’s Frank Vitchard (Channel 2’s lead anchor, who also takes part in the news-rumble) will be back in action.Meanwhile, continuing her run of comedy appearances, Nicole Kidman is set to show up in some capacity, though her role is being kept quiet. »

Latest Trailer For The Iceman

4 April 2013 10:55 AM, PDT

It’s been a few months since we’ve seen a promo for indie contract killer drama The Iceman. But now here comes the latest trailer, featuring Michael Shannon as Richard “Richie” Kuklinski, who lived a violent double life. Check it out below. Kuklinski and his wife Deborah (Winona Ryder) appear to have a model American life, living with their three children in an idyllic suburban ranch house with a big lawn on a quiet street. But unbeknownst to Deborah and the kids, when Kuklinski goes off to work in the morning – or, on occasion, in the middle of dinner or the middle of the night – he is carrying out executions at the behest of the Gambino crime family, employing a wide variety of deadly methods (guns, knives, explosives, strangling, poisonings) that make it difficult to trace all the fatalities to a single killer. The Iceman shows the development of »
