Peter Jackson Developing Mortal Engines

The Dominion Post, a newspaper published in Wellington, New Zealand, home of Peter Jackson's Wingnut Films and the Weta Workshop, has broken the news that Jackson and Weta are working on adaptations of Philip Reeve's Mortal Engines quartet (known as The Hungry City Chronicles in the Us: so let's hope we get to keep the UK titles and there's none of that Golden Compass nonsense).Reeve's series of children's novels takes place in a steampunk post-apocalyptic future where cities are mobile and perambulate the planet devouring each other for fuel: a system amusingly called Municipal Darwinism. The St Paul's Cathedral-topped London is the strongest of these Traction Cities, in a world where "old tech" is extremely sought after. The first novel, Mortal Engines itself, in a very small nutshell, involves an assassination attempt within the Historians Guild; the challenging of apprentice Historian Tom Natsworthy's value system, when he …

Bryan Singer Talks X-Men: First Class

Now that he's officially signed to develop and direct the film, Bryan Singer has begun to talk - at least, to some degree - about mutant prequel pic X-Men: First Class.Chatting with the Hollywood Reporter's Heat Vision Blog, Singer admitted that while he couldn't talk specifically about the story (it's still a secret), he could lock down what part of the X-story it would cover. "It’s basically about the formation of the X-Men. How they began and the relationship between a young Xavier and a young Magneto."And since it'll borrow elements from Eric Lensherr's longer life, it's even more likely that the Magneto origin movie will be shoved back on the schedule as Fox concentrates on this. "This story would probably utilize some of the Magneto story because it deals with a young Magneto, so it might supersede that because this would explore that relationship between a …

Elm Street and Friday 13th Updates

Readers, do not be concerned. The Nightmare on Elm Street re-shoots are par for the course, and Friday 13th Part 2 3D is still on the Platinum Dunes agenda. You have nothing to fear. Or perhaps everything.Dunes producer Brad Fuller, updating the production company's official blog page, has set out to lower the all the raised eyebrows that followed the announcement of Elm Street reshoots in the wake of its test screenings. "We're doing a couple of days, and everyone seems to be making a big deal out of it," he says, going on to point out that every single Dunes film to date has gone through a similar process. He won't specify what exactly is going before the cameras for the second time, but says "the fans' input has always been valuable, and suffice to say we listened."Meanwhile at Crystal Lake, there's an eerie silence (chi-chi-chi ka-ka-ka...) Fuller …

Bounty Hunter Trailer Arrives

Ah, the high concept rom com - throwing attractive people together in wacky situations since the dawn of cinema itself (well, since the 50s at least). And now we have a trailer for the latest incarnation - The Bounty Hunter, starring Gerard Butler and Jennifer Aniston. How does it look? Much like Fool's Gold, or Hitch, two of director Andy Tenant's previous movies, and again finds two sexy actors bickering, scrapping and generally trying to prove they have chemistry together. On their own, Butler and Aniston have done some good work, but on the evidence of this trailer, we're not yet sure they work as a pair. Butler's contending with a slightly awkward American accent and Aniston appears to be falling back on her usual blend of nervy/cute tics. The basic premise of the promo - which snuck out over the weekend - finds Butler's dogged bounty hunter …

It's the Marmaduke teaser, and it's now on the magical interwebs.Yes, the latest chatty animal film is heading inexorably for us like a giant meteorite, and there's nothing we can do to stop it. If course, this is only a teaser - one that introduces us to the hefty pooch of comic strip legend who now has Owen Wilson voicing him.Like the Chipmunks, it's clearly going to be aimed at the kiddies and there's no way to judge the final film's quality from a teaser. But really…. invoking The Oc? Just go and watch it (it's short) and judge for yourself …

Kick-Ass Red Band Trailer Online

Those of a sensitive disposition may want to look away now because a new Kiss-Ass red-band trailer is up online and it majors on Hit Girl, a 12 year-old with the violent tendencies of Oldboy and the potty mouth of Malcolm Tucker. All the rest of you feel free to enjoy a festive treat with Chloe Moretz's kicking, shooting, and kicking so more as she tackles a mass of unsuspecting villainy. Kudos too for finding time to sneak in a cheeky milkshake with her dad and mentor, Nicolas Cage's Big Daddy, amid that welter of feature-rearranging.Based on Mark Millar and John Romita Jr's comic-book series and directed by Matthew Vaughn, Kick-Ass is set in a world populated by ultra-violent and, in the case of Aaron Johnson's wannabe crime fighter Kick-Ass, not-quite-so-ultra-violent vigilantes. As you probably know by now, we're really rather excited by it in this part …

A bass guitarist for totally average garage band Sex Bob-omb, the 22 year-old has just met the girl of his dreams... literally. The only catch to winning Ramona Flowers (Mary Elizabeth Winstead)? Her seven evil exes are coming to kill him. …

Hawkman Next For Warners?

Andy Warhol famously predicted that one day, everyone will get their 15 minutes of fame. If he were alive today, he'd be very confused as to why he's in a coffin, but he'd also announce that every superhero will eventually be turned into a film, especially now that Warners has apparently set its sights on DC's Hawkman. The team over at Pajiba have a source that points to the studio shoving a film based on the be-winged hero into development. It's still a rumour at this point, since Warners has yet to officially announce it, but following the creation of the massive entertainment conglomeration once WB swallowed up DC, it was only a matter of time before all the comics' company's books were thrown into the script pile. Hawkman is one of the decidedly lesser DC heroes, first created for the pages of Flash Comics in 1940 by Gardner Fox and Dennis …

Tony: London Serial Killer Trailer

21 December 2009 8:33 AM, PST

So, serial killing, eh? It's not exactly a gold mine of ever-so-dry, ever-so-witty punchy prose, harmless quips and debonair wordplay, but it does seem to let the likes of Anthony Hopkins deliver Oscar-winning performances, so there's a fine line to tread.Gerard Johnson's macabre, serial-killer thriller then. Played by newcomer Peter Ferdinando, he's called Tony, he's got a fiercesome 'tache and definitely should have gone to Specsavers, and he's got, shall we say, some 'issues'. Check out the trailer for the critically-acclaimed Tony below.Tony is released in cinemas on February 5. …

Reshoots for Clash of the Titans

20 December 2009 10:01 PM, PST

Louis Leterrier's crash-bang-wallop reworking of Clash of the Titans is due to be released on March 26th, but star Sam Worthington has revealed that some eleventh-hour reshoots will be taking place as late as January. "We'll be right up against it," he told the La Times.Reshoots aren't uncommon or in themselves necessarily cause for alarm, and the official line is that the studio "cut loose with some money, so we can add to it". But Worthington concedes that "there were some creaky parts that we knew were creaky and that we knew were going to be creaky going into it. The studio is letting us add some scenes."It also seems clear that the Kraken-like release of Avatar is foremost in everyone's minds: "they're talking about making it 3D". That's surely a tall order to get done and dusted in a couple of months, but if it does end up being the case, …

21 Jump Street Arrests Directors

20 December 2009 10:00 PM, PST

The film version of classic Us cop show 21 Jump Street has been slowly trudging through development thanks to actor - and now, in this case, producer - Jonah Hill - and the film might now have directors, in the shape of Phil Lord and Chris Miller. They're a seemingly unlikely pair, given that their most recent assignment was making CG 'toon Cloudy With A Chance Of Meatballs, but since that both turned out well and made lots of money, it's perhaps less shocking that Sony would be offering them a crack at Jump Street.Mike Bacall and Hill have been busy adapting the series, which originally aired between 1987 and is best known for launching the career of one Johnny Depp, who the studio is hoping will agree to at least make a cameo in the movie. With Lord and Miller now attached, it's all pointing to the idea that the …

Wes Craven's New Villain Revealed

20 December 2009 10:00 PM, PST

With all the recent talk about Scream 4, Wes Craven's actual current project, the just completed My Soul to Take (which started life as 25/8) has been a bit forgotten. But thanks to stuntman Manny Siverio's MySpace page, we now know what to expect from the next killer in the Craven pantheon.Frankly, he looks a bit like Rob Zombie's Hellbilly persona, which means he also looks kinda like the hobo Michael Myers from Halloween 2. Maybe it's postmodern. This is Craven after all, directing his first self-written original screenplay since 1994's New Nightmare.Hellbilly (he's not yet been officially named, to the extent that we're not sure who the actor is - is it stuntman Christopher Place, cast as "Ripper"?) is a serial killer, who may or may not still be alive after his reign of terror ended. Sixteen years on, he's back to terminate the seven …
