Cyndi Lauper and Lady Gaga get made up for Mac

Mac Cosmetics has the right idea. What better way to usher in the luscious bounty of spring than with two blonde bombshell gay icons?

Five octave singing '80s diva Cyndi Lauper has always been a supporter of the queer community. Newcomer Lady Gaga is openly bisexual and continually pushes the boundaries of gender, sexuality, and just plain bizarre performance art. Together they make a formidable team to introduce Mac's Viva Glam Spring 2010 campaign, to debut in February.

The first of the pictures from photographer Ellen von Unwerth gives off a darkly contrasting pink and red Valentines vibe. The fair-haired lasses thickly painted eyes pop against porcelain skin. And though Lauper looks incredibly surprised, the duo are far from innocent. However, Gaga’s sensual lipstick presentation and fawning over a lace-clad Lauper is endearing. A candy colored, circus stripe in the background tops off this subtly sexy and silly shot. …

New "Alice" trailer is some kind of wonderful

17 December 2009 2:00 PM, PST

The new Alice in Wonderland is making me curiouser and curiouser. In fact, I’d say I’m downright mad for the movie now that a new, full-length trailer has been released. While I enjoyed the original teaser trailer released in July, this version vastly improves on its predecessor.

How vastly? I’d gladly jump down the rabbit hole and pledge allegiance to whichever queen will make March 5 come faster — that vastly.

While the original looked fun and fanciful, the new cut adds a needed dark edge to the affair. Even the previously released footage seems to have been punched up. Everything is just a little more menacing and at the same time more hilarious. Now that’s a clever trick.

The trailer also reveals the heart of the story: Alice (Aussie newcomer Mia Wasikowska) returns to Wonderland as a young woman years after her fist visit. What she finds …

Meredith Baxter has a memoir on the way

17 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST

I’m sure that by now Meredith Baxter’s kitchen is teeming with toaster ovens.

But we got word this week that she’s getting a bonus: A book deal from Random House’s Crown Publishing Group. The Broadway Books imprint of the publisher has an agreement with Baxter for a memoir in which she “will present a fully realized portrait of her life as an actress, mother of five children, and grandmother, and will candidly discuss her fight with breast cancer, her 19 years of sobriety, entrepreneurship, and her decision to come out.”

If the book is half as involved as its description, we’re in for a long read. Not that I’m complaining.

The deal is just one more affirmation in an outpouring of support for Baxter since she came out as a lesbian a few weeks ago. Celebs ranging from Family Ties hubby Michael Gross to Rosie …

Rock out to the first trailer for "The Runaways"

17 December 2009 8:01 AM, PST

You saw the pictures, now see them move. The teaser trailer for The Runaways was released today and it certainly doesn’t bomb — cherry or otherwise.

Our first glimpses of Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett and Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie are a blur of big guitar riffs and bigger bad ass attitudes. I know it’s only rock ‘n roll, but I like it.

While the clip doesn’t give us much in terms of plot or dialogue, it sure sets the scene. And in case there were any lingering doubts, Kristen and Dakota look almost frighteningly their parts.

Have I mentioned Dakota is only 15 years old? I think that makes the bustier/garter belt ensemble she is wearing illegal in several states.

Actually, for all the hype Kristen receives as Bella, I think Joan Jett may be her perfect role. It lets her employ that signature pout. Plus, …

Morning Brew: Thursday, Dec. 17

17 December 2009 7:00 AM, PST

Morning!

SnagFilms.com is reporting that the rights to the U.S. film version of Stieg Larsson's best-selling The Girl With the Dragon Tattoo (and its sequels) are going to Sony as of today. One of the novel's major characters is "bisexual tattooed hacker detective Lisbeth Salander." There's already a Swedish film adaptation, starring Noomi Rapace as Lisbeth. Here's a clip:

Rhapsody.com has wrapped up the decade in music, including a write-up on queer pop and rock, from k.d. lang to Le Tigre to Lady Gaga. Although I'm not so sure I like the "pink face" term they're pushing, I like the inclusion of Queen Latifah. She's so gay friendly, isn't she?

Clea DuVall will guest star on Numb3rs in 2010 as "as the sister of a murdered escort." Girlfriend is making her way through every crime show on TV. I wouldn't mind if she came back …

Kristen Stewart and Dakota Fanning find their inner rockstars for "The Runaways"

16 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST

Some movies you hope will be good. Other movies you hold your breath and pray will kick ass. The Runaways is definitely the latter. The film based on the real-life, real awesome seminal all-girl band has released its first official image. From the looks of things perhaps we can finally breathe a little easier. Also, um, damn.

Yes, that’s Dakota Fanning as Cherie Currie and Kristen Stewart as Joan Jett. Yes, they look fantastic. Yes, I am now having difficulty breathing for an entirely different reason. Earlier this month it was announced that The Runaways (formerly Cherry Bomb) would premiere Jan. 24 at the Sundance Film Festival. This week the film was picked up for U.S. distribution and will be release in theaters March 19.

The film, based on the biography Neon Angel: the Cherie Currie Story, follows the teen friendship of guitarist Jett and singer Currie, who went on to form The Runaways. …

Meryl Streep helps prove that romance doesn't end at 60

16 December 2009 8:00 AM, PST

I want you to think hard for a second. I realize this is might be diametrically opposed to all the warm-holiday fuzzies you’re feeling right now. And those three gingerbread cookies you ate in lieu of lunch probably aren’t helping either. But here goes: When is the last time you saw a woman over 60 played the lead in a romantic comedy for a major studio?

No, not Diane Keaton. She was 57 when she made Something’s Got to Give. No, not Susan Sarandon. She was 58 when she made Shall We Dance? No, not Helen Mirren. She was 61 when she made The Queen, but while you may have swooned at her portrayal of Elizabeth II it was in hardly a fluffy rom-com. No, if memory serves me you have to go back to 1995 when, at age 61, Sophia Loren starred in Grumpier Old Men. And the men she was romancing …

Morning Brew: Wednesday, Dec. 16

16 December 2009 7:00 AM, PST

Hi friends!

In one of the worst ideas I've ever heard, there will be a film adaptation of Philip Roth's 2009 novel The Humbling, which revolves around a lesbian deciding to have a sexual relationship with a much older man. Al Pacino is apparently a huge fan of the book, as he purchased the rights and is going to play the lead. Somehow I don't think anything about this is going to be good for lesbian visibility, but I'll still be interested to see who they cast as the lead lez.

Thanks to AfterEllen.com reader Vish, my idea that Sweden is full of hot gay women is now confirmed. First Mariette Hansson, now Annika Holtz, a contestant on the country's Survivor-esque reality show, Robinson. The 28-year-old has been out since she was 15 and hails from Älvsjö, a suburb of Stockholm. Also, if you can read Swedish, you can read her blog. …

2009 Year in Review: Television

16 December 2009 12:21 AM, PST

In 2009, the number of leading lesbian characters on primetime broadcast TV doubled — from one to two.

Out of the estimated 600 lead and supporting characters on network TV, seven of them of are lesbian or bisexual. And of those seven, five of them kissed women last year. And of those five, three of them made out during Sweeps.

Things looked bleak at the beginning of the year, but with the growing trend of lesbian brides getting gunned down or cheating on their wedding days, and the continued trend of bisexual characters only expressing their same-sex attraction during Sweeps, and the loss of Showtime's lesbian drama The L Word, we're ending the year on a downward spiral in terms of lesbian visibility.

Scripted Television: Broadcast

Primetime

The most surprising story in 2009 was the relationship between Callie Torres (played by Sara Ramirez) and Arizona Robbins (played by Jessica Capshaw) on Grey's Anatomy.

Leisha Hailey and Christina Hendricks gather in "La Cucina"

15 December 2009 10:00 AM, PST

What would it take for you to see a movie most of you have never heard about before? What if I told you it involved food? My Top Chef people are already there. How about if I mentioned it starred Leisha Hailey? Now I’ve hooked a bunch of you. And what if I added it also starred Christina Hendricks. More of you, good. And, finally, what if I were to casually say supermodel Rachel Hunter played a lesbian. And, we have a winner.

The independent film La Cucina is coming to DVD Jan. 12. The romantic drama, which was released in 2007, tells three interweaving stories as the lives of a group of neighbors unfold in, what else, their kitchens. Check out the trailer here.

The film marks Mad Men’s Christina’s feature film debut. She plays Lily, who just met the older Michael (Joaquim de Almeida). Leisha, meanwhile plays …

Natalie Portman will take on Jane Austen and zombies

14 December 2009 12:00 PM, PST

Usually when you mention brains and Natalie Portman it refers to her having a big one, not zombies demanding “Brains! Brains! Brains!” But that’s exactly what we’ll see now that the Oscar-nominated actress has signed on to produce and star in Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a film adaption of the zombie bestseller based on the classic Jane Austen novel.

Yes, Jane Austen. Yes, undead legions. Yes, Natalie Portman. This just went from “ha ha cheeky monkeys” to “I would like to thank the Academy and — of course — the living dead.”

The book is described as an “expanded version” of the beloved Austen story. Natalie will play the iconic heroine Elizabeth Bennet (a role she seemed destined for, especially given her resemblance to previous portrayer Keira Knightley). But now instead of just battling for the affections of the haughty Mr. Darcy, she will also battle flesh-eating hordes. Gosh, …

Buffy wants her MTV, and Logo too

14 December 2009 9:00 AM, PST

Those familiar chords, that signature font, that full moon. Yes, Buffy is coming back to TV. No, alas, not new episodes. Reruns of all seven seasons of the cult series are coming to the Viacom-owned channels MTV and Logo next year.

Talk about wanting my MTV! (Sorry, Logo, there’s no appropriate Dire Straits songs to reference here, but I like you, too). Buffy the Vampire Slayer will air daily on both channels and mark the first time since 2008 the show has been on TV anywhere. It was previously syndication on FX from 2001 to 2008.

The show will launch New Year’s Day on Logo with an 18-hour marathon from 6 a.m. to 12 a.m. Est. The starting Jan. 4 it will air weeknights at 6 and 7 p.m. and late nights at 2 and 3 a.m. It will also show at various times on the weekends. [Full disclosure: Logo owns AfterEllen.com, but trust me my excitement stems solely from my fanatical love of the show. I might or might not even own an action figure or two. I admit nothing.]

MTV will kick off their Buffy bonanza on Jan. …
