eBay find: Megan Fox's bloody gloves from Jennifer's Body
6 November 2009 7:45 AM, PST
However trendy the goth girl look is right now, clothes covered in blood are seriously unlikely to catch on with the mainstream. Carrie White (Sissy Spacek) championed the look back in the 1976 Stephen King horror and it didn’t work then, however that hasn’t deterred Megan Fox from having a go, the Transformers actress getting a blood bath in new comedy/ horror, Jennifer’s Body. Not that she’s an innocent bystander in all the bloodshed, nope, Fox’s Jennifer is the one causing it all and she wears the results of her carnage with pride, her prom dress outfit getting well and truly trashed. And we’ve spotted the blood-spattered opera gloves she wears with this outfit for auction online, making them week’s eBay find. »
Original screen costumes on display at Gone with the Wind exhibition
6 November 2009 7:23 AM, PST
70 years ago audiences first fell for the spirited love affair between southern belle Scarlett O’Hara (Vivien Leigh) and certified scoundrel, Rhett Butler (Clark Gable), and now, as the American civil war classic makes its Blu-Ray debut (out on 16th/ 17th November here in the UK and here in the Us) it’s a great time to relive the splendor of the multi Oscar-winning epic with a trip to the Gone with the Wind exhibition. Having opened in April, this fantastic showcase is hosted at the Hollywood Boulevard Cinema in Woodridge, Illinois and features the Shaw-Tumblin Gwtw Collection, which boasts the distinction of being the world’s largest collection of Gwtw memorabilia – definitely worth giving a damn about. »

6 November 2009 6:34 AM, PST
Never have big screen bloodsuckers looked as good as at the moment. For ladies to lust after, there’s perpetual 17-year-old Edward (Robert Pattinson) in Twilight and its sequel, The Twilight Saga: New Moon and for guys, there’s none other than FHM’s sexiest woman in the world, Megan Fox. The Transformers siren flashes her fangs as the titular Jennifer in comedy/ horror, Jennifer’s Body which is out this week in UK cinemas. And we just love this tie-in tee that celebrates the tongue-in-cheek terror of the movie, “I Eat Boys”. »
Get named in the credits for Paranormal Activity
6 November 2009 5:11 AM, PST
When you look back on the year that was 2009 there are some movies that you knew would make a ton of money (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Up), others that exceeded expectations (The Hangover, Zombieland, Paul Blart: Mall Cop) and those that just came from nowhere and in that last category is supernatural horror, Paranormal Activity. It’s not out in the UK until the end of the month, but stateside has been a sensation, the low-budget ($15,000) chiller taking nearly $87,000 so far, making it the biggest earning independent ever, overtaking the similarly filmed, The Blair Witch Project. This runaway success has been built on viral marketing, Paramount Pictures encouraging fans to “demand” the movie show at their cinema and they certainly answered in their numbers. And now to maintain this audience interaction, the studio is inviting people to submit their name for inclusion in »
Fashion fix: Vintage Nathan Turk western shirt from Superbad
6 November 2009 4:18 AM, PST
Back in 50s showbiz circles, if you wanted a western shirt you went to Nathan Turk. He included the likes of Elvis Presley and Roger Rogers among his celebrity clientele and now, years later, his clothes have now become much sought after vintage pieces with Hollywood still happily flying this fashion flag flag. And one such example of Turk’s retro stylings turned up onscreen in 2007’s comedy smash, Superbad. It’s the blue western shirt as modelled on Jonah Hill’s character, Seth and though this exact one is no longer available, we’ve tracked down a lookalike that we think is sure to have all McLovins drooling with jealousy. »

Disaster flick, 2012 to hit the small screen?
6 November 2009 2:27 AM, PST
Movies making the leap to TV is not a new nor particularly novel phenomenon. Just in recent months, we’ve reported on a number of such schemes (see Related Content, right). But this one’s different, as the movie being touted to make the transition hasn’t even opened in cinemas yet. We’re talking about 2012, the doomsday blockbuster starring John Cusack (who’s been pretty quiet of late), Amanda Peet, Thandie Newton and, hot off his turn in Zombieland, Woody Harrelson. It’s not released until next Friday, 13th November and yet when interviewed by Entertainment Weekly at the film’s premiere; director Roland Emmerich was full of these future plans. Maybe he reckons he has to churn it out quickly, what with the world ending in 2012. »

Merchandise swag: Audrey Hepburn glass wall clock
5 November 2009 6:43 AM, PST
It doesn’t matter what clothes are in the shops, what top models parade down catwalks or what Vogue tells you is “in” this season, there are some films that will never go out of fashion. While it’s too early to judge the long-term influence of the likes of Sex and the City, 1967’s Breakfast at Tiffany’s is still going strong. While Sarah Jessica Parker was still a babe in arms, Audrey Hepburn, along with long-time friend and onscreen collaborator, Hubert de Givenchy, was giving Hollywood a taste of sophisticated chic in the classic tale of Manhattan “kook” Holly Golightly. And what better way to add some of this elegance to your world than with this Audrey Hepburn glass wall clock? »
Movie-inspired vinyl art for your laptop
5 November 2009 5:54 AM, PST
Ever stared at your laptop disappointed in its one-colour dreariness? Yes, we feel your pain, Boxwishers. Technology – we love it, yet it’s not always as aesthetically exciting as it could be. And yet it doesn’t have to be this way, laptop skins are becoming increasingly popular, allowing the user to add some personality to their gadget, and we’ve found some that we just love as created and sold by etsy.com store, Vinylville. No marks for guessing what they’re made from. »
Fashion fix: 3.1 Phillip Lim houndstooth box coat from P.S. I Love You
5 November 2009 5:25 AM, PST
In romantic drama, P.S. I Love You Holly (Hilary Swank) bemoans her lack of haute couture fashion ("I buy everything on eBay. It doesn’t count when you’re wearing Marc Jacobs from Minneapolis!” she laments), but we don’t quite believe her. A little snoop around her wardrobe reveals a fair share of tasty designer names, including Diane von Furstenberg and Zac Posen (see Related Content, right) and it’s an item from Philip Lim’s 3.1 collection that has caught our eye – the houndstooth box coat. A gorgeous piece that is just ideal for winter 2009. »
Soundtrack to Michael Jackson's This Is It tops Billboard chart
5 November 2009 4:59 AM, PST
He’s sadly gone, but never forgotten as Michael Jackson has made it an impressive on-two, the soundtrack to his film, This Is It following the film to the top of the charts. The movie, which brings together exclusive footage of the King of Pop rehearsing for his planned residence at London O2 arena, has been a worldwide phenomenon currently sitting atop the Us and UK box offices and the accompanying soundtrack, a double CD which features the new single “This Is It”, along with other Mj classics, unheard demos and even a poetry reading, has followed suit, selling 373,000 copies in its first week, according to Nielsen SoundScan. »
Get the teen fantasy look from Twilight
5 November 2009 3:17 AM, PST
Paris, Milan, New York and Forks, Washington? The damp and overcast setting of romance fantasy Twilight isn’t exactly one of the international bastions of fashion and style. You’re not going to catch Carrie Bradshaw skipping around the forest in her Manolo Blahniks, rather it’s known as the logging capital of the world due to its timber industry and its persistently wet weather (it’s the rainiest city in the continental Us). However, this unglamorous and sleepy spot of the Pacific Northwest was chosen by author Stephenie Meyer as the setting for Twilight and now with the adaptation of the 2005 bestseller a bonafide film phenomenon, it’s become the unlikely home to some of the best dressed teenagers around. »
2012 director fearful of destroying Islamic site onscreen
5 November 2009 2:56 AM, PST
John Woo has his doves, Quentin Tarantino his fictional brands and Hitchcock had his cameos; directors love putting their signature stamp on movies and they come in all shapes and forms. Just look at the cinematic CV of German filmmaker, Roland Emmerich. 1996 – Independence Day, aliens lay siege to earth, taking out the likes of the Empire State Building and the White House. 1998 – Godzilla – New York under attack by a giant Japanese monster. 2004 – The Day After Tomorrow – global warming bites us in the ass with a giant storm that brings a new ice age. And now 2009 – 2012, a tale of global destruction based on the theory that the world will end according to the Mayan Long Count Calendar. Spot the similarities? Not that Emmerich is happy to destroy any old landmark that stands in his wake, with one apparently off limits to the disaster-loving director. »
University hopes Earhart biopic will boost interest in collection
5 November 2009 1:46 AM, PST
We’ve seen it time and time again, a historical film fostering newfound interest in its subject matter. Just earlier this year, Michael Mann’s crime epic, Public Enemies (now out on DVD) put the spotlight on 30s gangster John Dillinger (Johnny Depp) increasing public fascination with the criminal’s grave site; while in the autumn, culinary comedy/ drama Julie & Julia encouraged people to re-discover 60s celebrity chef, Julia Child (played by Meryl Streep) and have a go at recreating her mouthwatering dishes. And now we have a new biopic, namely Amelia, the story of pioneering aviator Amelia Earhart (an eerily similar-looking, Hilary Swank) which looks likely to bang the drum for the fearless flyer, and hoping to maximise on this new appetite for Amelia is Purdue University, which hosts the world’s largest collection of Earhart mementoes. »
Star Wars stormtrooper replica case back in court
4 November 2009 7:36 AM, PST
In one corner we have George Lucas, the minted mastermind behind the Star Wars franchise with an estimate wealth of $3 billion and in the other, Andrew Ainsworth, a British prop designer. The two are fighting it out in the legal courts over stormtroopers, the iconic armoured soldiers from Lucas’s sci-fi saga. Ainsworth, the owner of Shepperton Design Studios worked for Lucas on the original Star Wars, sculpting the stormtroopers’ helmets but then went on to sell replicas of the full costumes without George’s say-so. And that’s where the trouble began. »
Marilyn Monroe-style 50s bras making comeback
4 November 2009 6:11 AM, PST
And here we were thinking the 80s was the in vogue fashion. Nope, the big news in style circles is the comeback of an unlikely item – the pointy bra. More conical and structured than their current squishier counterparts, these examples of old school underwear were popularised in the 50s by Hollywood sirens such as Marilyn Monroe and her Gentlemen Prefer Blondes co-star, Jane Russell and again were brought into the limelight when Madonna (who has often styled herself after her idol, Monroe) donned Jean-Paul Gaultier designed versions for her Blonde Ambition world tour in 1990. And now, it’s 19 years later and they’re back with a number of UK shops reporting surges in sales of pointy bras. Who’d have thunk it? »
Merchandise swag: Batman logo cufflinks
4 November 2009 5:02 AM, PST
Emulating the grungy green and purple style of The Joker (Heath Ledger) is a logical and widespread choice come Halloween. Yet when it comes to year-long fashions, the clown prince of Gotham leaves a lot to be desired, good job then that we have Bruce Wayne/ Batman. Christian Bale’s masked crimefighter manages to look good, whether in his day mode as the polished playboy in made-to-measure Armani suits and Belstaff or at night, cleaning up the streets in his sleek Batsuit care of Lucius Fox (Morgan Freeman). And despite Bruce’s togs being very expensive and Batman’s a little impractical (would you want to pop to the shops in a cape?), we’ve found a way to show some love for the superhero in your smart stylings – Batman logo cufflinks. »
The Twilight Saga: New Moon UK fan party announced
4 November 2009 4:25 AM, PST
The Twilight Saga is undoubtedly a worldwide phenomenon and yet, we often hear how short-changed Twifans feel here in the UK. It’s rare that they get to see their onscreen idols in the flesh and sometimes tie-in products are released in the States earlier (such as with The Twilight Saga: New Moon soundtrack) turning the famous British stiff upper lip into a glum grimace. Yet we’re trying to do our Fairy Godmother bit here at Boxwish and have news of a British event that is sure to turn that frown upside down, namely The Twilight Saga: New Moon UK fan party. An exciting event that promises serious Twilight fun and even a few star names… »
Will shark movie, The Reef, help or hinder Australia's tourist trade?
4 November 2009 3:17 AM, PST
It’s 34 years since Jaws first put sharks on cinema’s scare-o-meter and since then we’ve spilt our popcorn over other predators of the deep in the likes of Deep Blue Sea and Open Water. And it looks like we could once again be giving the sea a miss thanks to The Reef, a new Australian thriller scheduled for release in 2010. The low-budget movie, which is being touted as a true story and is supported by the country’s State Government, follows a group of youngsters who find themselves fighting for their lives when their sailboat capsizes along the Great Barrier Reef and a great white takes a dislike to them. It’s classic disaster movie fodder and yet there are concerns that it might damage tourism in the Queensland area, where it’s being filmed. »
