Roger Ebert Documentary Will Be Finished, According To Filmmakers

4 April 2013 8:29 PM, PDT

For a website such as this, that features news and reviews about all areas of cinema, the passing of Roger Ebert will reverberate for quite some time, silencing a voice that most of us have for years held high as one of the only critics left who could encapsulate an entire life.s worth of film knowledge and experiences into a single article without ever making it sound like anything but a simple film review. It.s no small shame that we.ll never get to hear him critique the biographical documentary being made about him. A documentary that is still very much in the works, according to The Hollywood Reporter. The film is based on Ebert.s 2011 memoir and all-around enjoyable book Life Itself, which encompasses his entire career that saw his rise with the Chicago Sun-Times to his television show with rival critic Gene Siskel to his battles »

Carrie Gets A Bloody, Fiery First Trailer

4 April 2013 8:05 PM, PDT

"They're all gonna laugh at you!" Following up on yesterday's brief trailer preview, we now have our first full trailer for Carrie, the reimagining of the 1976 classic horror film based on Stephen King's novel. This new adaptation comes from Kimberly Peirce and stars Chloe Moretz as the title character, a teen who's sheltered and awkward and doesn't fit in at school, to say the least. Julianne Moore plays her religious, overbearing mother, who thinks locking her in a closet is for her own good. The trailer, which EW shared tonight, gives us an eyeful of some classic moments from the story, including Carrie on the floor in the locker room bathroom while her peers taunt and throw tampons at her. It looks like an update to this humiliating moment in the character's story involves a cell phone used to record the incident for maximum exposure. We also get an »

Fast & Furious 6 Poster Puts The Characters Ahead Of The Cars

4 April 2013 5:02 PM, PDT

The latest poster for the next installment to the Fast & Furious sequel reminds us that the movie arrives in theaters in a little over two months, right around the time when the Summer 2013 movie season will be roaring its engine, and hopefully already delivering on all of the potential and hype teased in the months leading up. In the case of Fast & Furious 6, all roads apparently lead to this. Aside from the excellent tough-guy(/girl) poses, what I like about the latest poster, which was shared by Coming Soon, is that it literally puts the characters first, ahead of the cars and what appears to be a London backdrop. Sure, the Fast & Furious films offer some of the more exciting car chases and racing scenes we might see on the big screen that year, but there's also a character story involved, and a little investment in the likes of Dom, »

Exclusive Sexy Evil Genius DVD Clip Features Katee Sackhoff Seeking Revenge

4 April 2013 2:06 PM, PDT

Sexy Evil Genius stars Katee Sackhoff as a psychotic ex and a woman scorned, who brings those exes together for a dinner at a Los Angeles bar. Lionsgate Home Entertainment is bringing the film to DVD, digital download, and On Demand on April 9, and to preview the giddily vengeful flick, we have an exclusive clip from the film to share with fans. Katee Sackhoff is currently playing a fairly stable female cop personality on A&E.s Longmire, so it.s been rather easy to forget her strengths actually lie in characters with complicated personalities and unusual quirks. In the clip, we see her start out as a seemingly bubbly individual and while her attitude never really changes, by the end of the segment, she.s said some pretty horrifying stuff about her self and some of the others at the table. Also in the clip, some prominent acting names, »

Benedict Cumberbatch Joins Guillermo Del Toro's Haunted House Flick Crimson Peak

4 April 2013 1:53 PM, PDT

Sure, Benedict Cumberbatch still has one of the stranger names in Hollywood, but he's fast becoming a household name. The stellar British series Sherlock is only the start of it. He.s also put in quality performances in almost every film he.s been in, including War Horse and Tinker, Tailor, Soldier, Spy, but it will be his evil villainy in the upcoming Star Trek: Into Darkness is going to rocket him into the forefront of the American consciousness. So after having worked with Steven Spielberg, Peter Jackson, and J.J. Abrams, Cumberbatch is now set to work for another massively popular and talented director, as The Hollywood Reporter reveals he has just signed on for Guillermo Del Toro.s next project, the haunted house gothic romance thriller Crimson Peak, produced by Legendary Pictures. Del Toro.s films usually come with a bit of secrecy attached, so it.s really »

Behind The Avengers Shawarma Scene, A Last-Second Shoot That Made Hollywood History

4 April 2013 1:13 PM, PDT

.According to TMZ, sales of the meat have gone through the roof,. is the strangest thing you.ll hear today, though in context, it makes sense. The above clip is part of a new featurette explaining how the post-credit stinger for Joss Whedon.s The Avengers came to pass. A lot of this is common knowledge, though maybe not with the detail that is spelled out in the clip. We were on the scene back when Robert Downey Jr. broke the .news. at an Avengers press conference that the ensemble was planning on shooting one last scene for inclusion in the movie. It ended up being the shawarma restaurant scene . a joke shoehorned into the Avengers credit sequence. Which was fitting. The standalone movies leading up to The Avengers all teased The Avengers. Whedon had nothing that he needed to tease next, but he did have room for one cute »

Richard Linklater Will Direct A Walk In The Woods For Robert Redford

4 April 2013 1:00 PM, PDT

Bill Bryson is one of America.s most interesting travel writers, able to weave together humor in with what it takes to be a human on Earth, instead of just listing locations and describing their histories. His frequent dabblings in science, history and language are just as interesting, but aren.t as easy to adapt. Robert Redford has been trying to get Bryson.s 1998 travel diary A Walk in the Woods: Rediscovering America on the Appalachian Trail produced for around eight years now, with directors like Chris Columbus and Barry Levinson coming into the fold and leaving without a lot of progress following those announcements. Let.s hope we aren.t being dragged down an Appalachian Trail of false hopes here, as the L.A. Times reports cult director Richard Linklater has taken the reins on the independently financed project, which Redford is still set to produce. Linklater is still »

Roger Ebert, Legendary Film Critic, Dies At 70

4 April 2013 12:49 PM, PDT

"On this day of reflection I say again, thank you for going on this journey with me. I'll see you at the movies. Those were the final words Roger Ebert wrote in what became his final post at his indispensable blog for the Chicago Sun-Times, the paper where he worked as a critic for more than 45 years. Today the Sun-Times announced that he passed away at the age of 70, just two day after publicly revealing that cancer had returned to his body, and announcing what he called a "leave of presence" from full-time reviewing. Ebert was one of the country's most famous film critics, if not the most famous, thanks to the long-running At the Movies, where he and Gene Siskel would banter and fight over the week's releases for decades. The show continued on even after Siskel's death, and even after Ebert's first battle with cancer, which »

Catherine Hardwicke Guiding The Age of Miracles

4 April 2013 12:32 PM, PDT

After decades as a production designer, Catherine Hardwicke made her directorial debut and breakthrough with the Oscar-nominated teen drama Thirteen. With follow-ups like The Nativity Story, Twilight and Red Riding Hood, Hardwicke has developed a niche for coming-of-age dramas with a fantastical bent. Having recently wrapped on the psychological thriller Plush, this daring writer-director is lining up another eccentric coming-of-age tale, The Age of Miracles. Based on the best-selling debut novel of Karen Thompson Walker, this sci-fi drama is set in world thrown into chaos when the Earth's rotation begins to slow down. The concept of time changes as days and nights drag on and on, wreaking havoc on the tides, animals, and human behavior. This potentially apocalyptic narrative is told through the eyes of a 10-year-old girl named Julia, who must face tragedies and triumphs both everyday and extraordinary with her parents, who are on the brink of divorce. »

Justin Lin Won't Direct Fast And Furious 7

4 April 2013 12:17 PM, PDT

Justin Lin.s Fast and Furious streak is about to come to a close. According to THR, the director reportedly alerted Universal Studio executives that he will not be coming back to direct the planned seventh installment in the long-running muscle-car franchise. Lin first started on the Fast track with 2006.s The Fast and the Furious: Tokyo Drift. He has made four Fast films to date, including Fast & Furious 6, which will be in theaters on May 24. The sources speaking to the trade cite two reasons for Lin.s departure. First, the timing. Universal wants the seventh picture in theaters Summer 2014, citing a lack of legitimate tentpoles. That would mean Lin would have to start prepping Fast 7 as he finished post-production on Fast 6. That.s a grueling cycle. Secondly, THR says Fast burnout also led to his eventual departure. The director has worked tirelessly on Fast films for years now, »

New Avengers Deleted Scenes Reveal More Cap Heroism And Entire Lost Storylines

4 April 2013 12:07 PM, PDT

Remember how a waitress in a single shot of The Avengers looked awfully familiar, and then we discovered she played Chrissy on Growing Pains as a child? We then wondered why she had wound up in the film in such a small part, only to hear that she'd had a bigger role before getting edited down in the final cut. Now, thanks to the wonders of deleted scenes and the new Marvel Phase One box set, we can see how her character's arc would have gone had it made the final cut. In fact, that scene is just one of the many brand-new ones revealed on the box set, which has also given us our first look behind the scenes of Thor: The Dark World and shown off some concept art from even more future Marvel films. Thanks to MTV you can watch more of the deleted scenes below, all »

Bill F---ing Murray: The Video Essay

4 April 2013 11:10 AM, PDT

Were you expecting a three-part Bill Murray video essay when you woke up today? Probably not. But as it turns out, it's totally the perfect way to spend your afternoon, revisiting some of the highlights from nearly all of Murray's films, but not necessarily focusing on all the most famous stuff. There are instantly recognizable clips from Ghostbusters and Groundhog Day, of course, but not necessarily the most famous lines, plus scenes from movies like Tootsie and Little Shop of Horrors that are rarely remembered for Murray's roles in them. Then there's movies like Where The Buffalo Roam and Mad Dog and Glory, which I had never even heard of, much less remembered Murray's roles in them. The actor who once seemed so synonymous with his most famous characters has actually managed to reinvent himself in recent years, and it's amusing to see roles as different as The Royal Tenenbaums »

Waiter Hired To Rewrite Tom Hardy Capone Biopic

4 April 2013 10:49 AM, PDT

Both New York and Los Angeles are peopled by struggling artists (musicians, actors, writers) working survival jobs (temp, barista, waiter) to make rent while they work toward their dreamed about big break. The statistics on how many of these daring dreamers "make it" can be pretty uninspiring. But take heart, dreamers, because today we have another story about a newly emerged artist's overnight success. Deadline reports Warner Bros. has hired waiter/writer Tom Shepherd to do a rewrite on the Tom Hardy vehicle Cicero. With this career-launching deal, Shepherd is officially a newly minted professional screenwriter. Shepherd first drew Hollywood's notice late last year when his Marlon Brando biopic script Hey, Stella! scored a coveted spot on the Black List, a collection of unproduced screenplays deemed the most promising by Hollywood power players. That project, which focuses on Brando's early days as an actor through his career-defining role in Tennessee »

Nicole Kidman Will Cameo In Anchorman: The Legend Continues

4 April 2013 10:16 AM, PDT

The cast of Anchorman 2 is already crammed with familiar faces, from the core quartet of Will Ferrell/Paul Rudd/Steve Carell/David Koechner to total newcomers like Harrison Ford and Kristen Wiig. Is there room for yet another giant star to add to the mix, though? Of course there is! And the latest star to venture to the Atlanta set is probably not who you'd expect. The Hollywood Reporter says that Nicole Kidman will have a "secret," uncredited role in the film-- though the fact that the news is out there probably means it's no longer a secret. She, Vince Vaughn and Luke Wilson all reportedly filmed brief appearances, which leads me to hope that Kidman will be involved in a sequel to the famous rumble from the first film, in which Wilson lost an arm at the hands of Tim Robbins and Brick Tamland somehow stabbed a guy »

Pain & Gain Poster: The Rock's American Dream Is Bigger Than Yours

4 April 2013 8:52 AM, PDT

Michael Bay has a whole lot to make up for after three straight Transformers films, but we can't help but feel excited about his first movie in 8 years not to feature giant robots. Not only that, but it manages to feature two of the most lovable meatheads on earth-- Mark Wahlberg and The Rock-- plus a murderer's row of fantastic supporting players, from Anthony Mackie (featured on the poster above) to Tony Shalhoub to Rebel Wilson to Ed Harris. If you don't like at least three people in this cast, you're not trying hard enough. The poster you see above premiered at MSN, along with a handful of exclusive new photos. We'll share two of the ones we like the best, mostly because they point to the film's huge comic potential-- The Rock running with a bank bag overflowing with coins, and our three doofy "heroes" counting their cash »

Spielberg Double Feature: Indiana Jones, Always, And How Death Defines Us

4 April 2013 7:48 AM, PDT

With Jurassic Park coming back to theaters this week, we're looking back at the years when Steven Spielberg released two films, and how those films reflect on each other. Earlier this week Sean dug into 1993's double feature, Jurassic Park vs. Schindler's List. Today Kristy tackles 1989's Always and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Aside from their shared release year, what do Steven Spielberg's double-dips have in common? This was the question we here at the Cinema Blend looked to discover in this investigative series. In 1989, Spielberg released the third film of his Indiana Jones adventures, Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, as well as the largely forgotten fantasy-drama Always. It had be years since I'd watched Last Crusade, and aside from recognizing its title from Audrey Hepburn's filmography, I'd never heard of Always. Much to my surprise, both films have some stark similarities in their heroes »

Great Gatsby Trailer Reveals New Beyonce And Lana Del Rey Music

4 April 2013 7:38 AM, PDT

Whether you love Baz Luhrmann or hate him, you've got to admire his consistency, and his dedication to his own wild and colorful vision of the world. His movies look like no other, and it's an enormous experiment to see how his aesthetic of excess will translate to what's probably the best American novel ever, The Great Gatsby. Writing about the lavish Roaring 20's, F. Scott Fitzgerald used prose that was precise and elegant and heartbreaking; translating it to the screen, Luhrmann is throwing on 3D and giant movie stars and music from Beyonce and Lana del Rey. Will it work? I have no idea, but I can't wait to find out. This latest trailer gives us more of a sense than ever of the dark directions the story heads, with a lot of focus on Joel Edgerton's Tom Buchanan, the brooding and brutish wife of Carey Mulligan's »

Pitch Perfect Cast Will Reunite For A Musical Opening Number At The MTV Movie Awards

4 April 2013 6:19 AM, PDT

With Rebel Wilson set to host the MTV Movie Awards later this month, it probably wasn't too much of a stretch to hope that the movie-focused awards ceremony might acknowledge Pitch Perfect in some way, beyond the four nominations it received. Wilson scored two individual nominations for the film (Breakthrough Performance and Female Performance), which focused on a college a cappella competition. And so it happens, some of the film's cast will reunite on stage for a musical opening number that's sure to be aca-mazing. MTV announced that, in addition to performances by Selena Gomez and "Thrift Shop" singer's Macklemore & Ryan Lewis, who will perform their latest single "Can't Hold Us," the MTV Movie Awards will also include a performance by Pitch Perfect's two main a cappella groups, The Bellas and the Treblemakers. Kimberly Pierce To Follow Up Carrie With Aryan Brotherhood Drama The Brand

4 April 2013 6:10 AM, PDT

Director Kimberly Pierce has never been one to shy away from tricky subject matter. In 1999 she made her feature debut with Boys Don't Cry, a biopic about the tragically short life of transgendered teen Brandon Teena. Next came Stop Loss in which she tackled the titular controversial military policy that forces soldiers to stay enlisted past their initial contract. This fall will see her ballsy remake of the Stephen King thriller Carrie, and then Pierce will move from Carrie White to white supremacists for The Brand. Deadline reports Pierce has been picked to direct the drama that is named for the Aryan Brotherhood's infamous prison gang. The script by penned by The Messenger's scribe Alessandro Camon and Snitch writer-director Ric Roman Waugh is based on the 2004 New Yorker article by David Grann. The original article, also called "The Brand," followed U.S. Attorney Gregory Jessner's quest to bring down »

Django Unchained's Zoe Bell Brawls In Raze Trailer

4 April 2013 5:23 AM, PDT

While Django Unchained was full of awesome moments, some Quentin Tarantino fans felt stung by the obviously truncated arc of Zoe Bell's mysterious masked badass. Bell has since revealed some details about her character's cut story, and is nothing but gracious about her recurring collaborator's edits. Still, as someone whose been in awe of her since Death Proof, where she memorably rode on the front of a muscle car in a terrifying high speed chase, I'm pumped to see her snag a lead in Raze, the gritty drama that's trailer can be seen above thanks to IGN. Bell has performed countless stunts on plenty of Tarantino movies, but as a stuntwoman her contribution is intentionally hard to distinguish from the actress she doubles for. (For more insight into the mysterious subset of moviemaking that is stunt work, seek out the sensational behind-the-scenes documentary Double Dare, which follows Bell from »
