Both Evil Dead And Jurassic Park 3D Bring In Big Friday Box Office
13 hours ago
The huge blockbuster opening this weekend was made 20 years ago, and the horror film is a remake of a classic from the 80s, but the box office is humming as if both of them were brand new. According to the early numbers at Deadline, both Jurassic Park 3D and Evil Dead had huge Fridays, with Evil Dead at the head of the pack. The horror remake from director Fede Alvarez made $11.5 million on Friday, setting it up for an estimated $27 million weekend and an easy first place. Right behind it was the 3D re-release of Jurassic Park, already one of the biggest blockbusters in history. The original opened to $47 million in 1993, but the 3D re-release of course won't get quite that close-- it made $7 million on Friday and is estimated for a $18 million weekend. The rest of the top 10 is rounded out by holdovers, with G.I. Joe: Retaliation holding »
Susan Sarandon and Topher Grace Join Indie Thriller The Calling
19 hours ago
When the words .independent serial killer thriller. all come together like that, it brings to mind a certain kind of.how do you say it.stinking piece of crap. The cinema world is flooded with stuff like that, so all exceptions to that normalcy are certainly welcome around these parts. With any luck, that will happen with Jason Stone.s The Calling, an adaptation of the novel written by Inger Ash Wolfe . a pseudonym of poet and author Michael Redhill. The plot itself is intriguing enough, but what piques pour interest is the involvement of Susan Sarandon and Topher Grace, both of whom have signed on to the project, according to Deadline. The Calling is Stone.s debut feature, and it.s also the first feature screenplay for Scott Abramovitch. Sarandon will be playing Detective Inspector Hazel Micallef, a woman who's investigating the murder of an elderly woman, "which leads »
Bradley Cooper Replaces Jude Law In Jane Got A Gun
21 hours ago
Let.s be honest here. We aren.t sure if this Is the last major update when it comes to Jane Got a Gun or not. It seems perfectly plausible, but then nothing that.s happened in this film.s long and winding road to production . a production that is now two weeks in progress no less. The perfect time to be on the hunt for a lead actor for the film you just inherited. First it was Michael Fassbender. Then it was Jude Law. And then it wasn.t anybody. And now Deadline reports Bradley Cooper will replace Law as the film.s ruthless antagonist, who was originally supposed to be played by Joel Edgerton, who took on the protagonist role when Law came aboard. Law left following director Lynne Ramsey, who bailed due to production problems and led the producers to bring in Gavin O.Connor to replace »
See The Two Veronica Mars Limited Edition T-Shirt Designs For Kickstarter Backers
5 April 2013 4:37 PM, PDT
Those Veronica Mars fans who pledged $25 or more to the film's Kickstarter campaign will be treated to a limited edition t-shirt. As much as we're all anticipating the actual film, there's nothing quite like a great t-shirt. Backers will get their pick of two great t-shirts, in appreciation of their financial support of the movie, and today Rob Thomas has given us a look at the designs. Following up on some updates on the campaign, which include a $1 pledge option, which will hopefully help get the movie's Kickstarter campaign to over 87,142 backers, breaking the record for most backers for a Kickstarter campagn, Rob Thomas posted another update, giving us a look at the two shirts that backers ($25 or more) will have to choose from when the campaign ends later this month. The first one is called "California Noir" and shows the familiar image of Veronica seated in her car with »
Composer Hans Zimmer Focused On The Good In Humanity For His Man Of Steel Score
5 April 2013 3:24 PM, PDT
Zack Snyder had a tough gig ahead of him when it came to making the second reboot of the Superman franchise, since Brian Singer.s Superman Returns didn.t win audiences over quite so much. (Though our resident master Josh Tyler loved it.) But everything Snyder does is given a weary glance when it.s first announced. But when you.re somebody as iconic as composer Hans Zimmer, there.s a much different kind of anticipation involved, especially after his masterful work for Christopher Nolan.s Batman trilogy. Would you be surprised to know that the man himself was even a little nervous about the gig? While, talking with CNN about his score for History Channel.s miniseriesThe Bible, Zimmer offered a few insights as to where the score for Man of Steel would take viewers. ear drums. And it isn.t the doom-laden sounds of The Dark Knight. For »
Spielberg Double Feature: Catch Me If You Can, Minority Report, And Defying Genre
5 April 2013 3:13 PM, PDT
With Jurassic Park coming back to theaters this week, we're looking back at the years when Steven Spielberg released two films, and how those films reflect on each other. Earlier this week Sean dug into 1993's double feature, Jurassic Park vs. Schindler's List, Kristy tackled 1989's Always and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade, and Katey took on 2005, when Spielberg released Munich and War of the Worlds. In today's final installment, Eric compares Catch Me If You Can and Minority Report. One of the most interesting tonal shifts of Steven Spielberg.s career came in 2002 when he made both Minority Report and Catch Me If You Can. In his double film years, Spielberg has notably always balanced the more fun, adventurous sci-fi/fantasy movies . like Jurassic Park, The Adventures of Tintin and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade - with more serious, Oscar-oriented films . like Schindler.s List, War Horse, »
Bryan Singer Teases Beast In Latest X-Men Twitter Pic
5 April 2013 2:27 PM, PDT
Hail, hail, the mutant gang.s all hair! At least, that.s what Bryan Singer.s suggesting with this Twitter pic of the beastly blue original X-Men member, The Beast. The Days of Future Past director shared the image along with the following quote, giving fans a hell of a tease heading into the weekend: "Many a monster wears the form of a man; it is better of the two to have the heart of a man & the form of a monster" What's unclear is whether this is Nicholas Hoult in make-up, though. He is the latest actor lucky enough to endure the Beast costuming for the benefit of an X-Men movie. (The other would be Kelsey Grammer in Brett Ratner.s X-Men: The Last Stand, of course.) The make-up clearly looks different from the outfit Hoult wore in First Class. The shot's too much of a close up to »

Jessica Chastain To Enter The Haunted House Of Guillermo del Toro's Crimson Peak
5 April 2013 1:10 PM, PDT
Fresh off her second Oscar nomination and a long string of roles that prove she can do just about anything, Jessica Chastain is finding yet another way to stretch her talents. Variety reports that she's the latest actor to join Crimson Peak, the next project from director Guillermo del Toro that's described as a haunted house thriller. A long list of impressive names have been added to the cast in recent days, including Benedict Cumberbatch, Charlie Hunnam and Emma Stone. Though a haunted house thriller feels like a far cry from Chastain's Juilliard training and Zero Dark Thirty role, she's already worked with del Toro once in a spooky story, starring in this year's surprise horror hit Mama, which del Toro executive produced. Because it came out in the doldrums of January Mama didn't get a ton of attention, but it's currently the fourth-highest grossing film of the year, with »
Chris Evans Looking Miserable In First Images From Bong Joon-ho's Snowpiercer
5 April 2013 1:09 PM, PDT
Notice the .Personal Achievement/Filmography: Scream Awards Best Superhero. at the bottom of Evans. passport. Sure, the extremely high-profile Oblivion and Star Trek Into Darkness are probably the most anticipated science fiction films coming this year, but everyone kind of knows what to expect from both of these films, regardless of the secrecy they.re clouded in. Arguably more exciting for those looking for something outside the box is Snowpiercer, the English-language debut from South Korean director Joon-ho Bong, who gave audiences the rollicking good time that was the creature feature The Host. But other than a poster and some concept art, visuals for the film have been largely absent. Until now, of course. The first batch of clever promotional material that Snowpiercer has to offer comes in the form of passports for its miserable looking characters, and they perfectly portray the dark, dreary and mysterious tone the film seems »
What Made Ryan Gosling Feel Ashamed On The Set Of The Place Beyond The Pines?
5 April 2013 12:51 PM, PDT
"I had this real sense of shame about it all, that I had blown it." That's a miserable feeling for any actor working in film, when there's no second performance to make it all better, and especially while actually making the movie. But Ryan Gosling's shame over the face tattoo he opted for in The Place Beyond the Pines actually wound up contributing to the role. Playing Luke, a stunt driver in a "motorcycle boy band" who travels with a carnival, Gosling has bleached hair and tattoos, and steps into the role of a man who only learns he's a father when the child is nearly a year old. As he told me, the face tattoo and the terrible hair seemed to suggest a guy who had made a lifetime of bad decisions-- and though Gosling wound up regretting the face tattoo, it all worked into how he played »
Michael Pena And Robert De Niro Take Roles In David O. Russell's Next Film
5 April 2013 12:01 PM, PDT
David O. Russell has a solid track record for making films that cast almost as many of Hollywood.s elite as there are characters for them to portray. And his newest flick is going above and beyond when it comes to roping in the big names. Deadline reports Michael Peña has been added to the mega cast of Russell.s untitled Abscam project for a non-specified role. Peña, who most recently starred in David Ayer.s End of Watch and Ruben Fleischer.s Gangster Squad, well next be seen as civil rights activist Cesar Chavez in Diego Luna.s biopic and his voice will be heard in the upcoming animated films Hell & Back and DreamWorks. Turbo. But Pena isn.t the only big name added, as The Boston Globe dropped the news that Robert De Niro has also been added to the film for a small part. A »
Veronica Mars Movie Update, And Another Kickstarter Record To Break
5 April 2013 11:16 AM, PDT
When a film is in its earliest stages of development, especially when it's just a script. filmmakers will try their hardest to keep the details to themselves. But now that we're all investors in the Veronica Mars movie, we may be getting regular updates-- call them quarterly reports, but for a movie instead of a corporation. The newest batch of details went straight to the Kickstarter backers, and shared with the rest of us at Entertainment Weekly. With a week left to go in the original Kickstarter campaign, there's already $4.6 million in the pot, smashing the record for the most money raised through the site. But Thomas has set his sights even higher, aiming to set the record for the most backers for any Kickstarter campaign. They're 23,000 away from passing the 87,142 who funded The Double Fine Adventure video game, and Thomas has set up a $1 campaign minimum to encourage as »
Remembering Roger Ebert, In His Own Words
5 April 2013 7:56 AM, PDT
Cartoon via The Chicago Tribune When you're remembering one of the most prolific, thoughtful, funny and inimitable writers who's even worked, you realize very quickly that your own words aren't going to do it justice. Everyone who has jobs like ours at Cinema Blend has grown up in Roger Ebert's shadow, either reading his columns for the Chicago Sun-Times, watching his weekly episodes of At the Movies, or later following his Twitter feed or blog posts. When Ebert died yesterday at the age of 70, after a recurrence of cancer, it felt like a sudden end to what had been a decades-long conversation. Roger Ebert was writing and talking about movies even after he had lost the physical ability to speak, and he did so until hours before his death. With a loss as big as this one, everyone takes a step back and remembers in their own way. And, »
Twilight's Kellan Lutz Will Face Off Against The Rock In Rival Hercules Movie
5 April 2013 7:38 AM, PDT
2012 was the year of the Snow White showdown with Mirror Mirror facing off against Snow White and the Huntsman. This year will see two action flicks best described as Die Hard at the White House, thanks to Olympus Has Fallen and White House Down. And 2014 will be the year where two Hercules face off, as both Renny Harlin and Brett Ratner prep wannabe blockbusters about the Greek god. The two projects both promise a "grittier" take on the classic story, but each filmmaker is working hard to give his gritty Herc pic the advantage. Ratner started off strong, scoring Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson to play his hero, who in this iteration is not a god but a burly mercenary. Harlin responded by promising 3D, and scoring an earlier release than his higher-profile rival. But with a moderate budget of only $70 million, what Harlin really needs to compete.aside from a »
Spielberg Double Feature: Munich, War Of The Worlds, And The Darkness Of 2005
5 April 2013 7:21 AM, PDT
With Jurassic Park coming back to theaters this week, we're looking back at the years when Steven Spielberg released two films, and how those films reflect on each other. Earlier this week Sean dug into 1993's double feature, Jurassic Park vs. Schindler's List, and Kristy tackled 1989's Always and Indiana Jones and the Last Crusade. Today Katey takes on 2005, when Spielberg released Munich and War of the Worlds. Less than four years passed between the attack on Pearl Harbor and the end of the global war that the U.S. entered because of it. Just shy of 60 years later the World Trade Center was destroyed, but in 2005 the United States was four years into a secretive, muddled war with no end in sight. Two weeks before Steven Spielberg released War of the Worlds in June of that year, five Marines were killed by a roadside bomb in Western Iraq. In »
World War Z International Poster Looks Down At A World In Chaos
5 April 2013 7:20 AM, PDT
It's as though World War Z refused to be excluded from the trend of posters that show us the back of their hero facing out at whatever adventure - or in this case, zombie mayhem - awaits. Although, this one's not quite as similar as some of the others we've seen. Following up on the pile-of-zombies poster is the international poster for World War Z, which reminds us that the film will be released in 3D, IMAX 3D and 2D when it hits theaters in June. And it also reminds us that mass destruction is probably inevitable, which should look pretty great on the big (or giant) screen. The poster comes via Hey U Guys and glimpses the shadowed profile of Brad Pitt, who plays Gerry, a U.N. employee who travels the world to speak with survivors of the zombie apocalypse. The trailers and TV Spots have teased planes »
Jurassic Park Oral History Reveals How Jim Carrey And James Cameron Almost Got Involved
5 April 2013 6:22 AM, PDT
Steven Spielberg.s Jurassic Park started stomping back into theaters on Thursday with an upgraded 3D print stretched to fit IMAX screens. Both formats seem tailor-made for the director.s larger-than-life digital dinosaur creations, which were impressive 20 years ago and remain spectacular to this day. Even more interesting, however, is the history of the project, which has been documented in a thrilling new read by EW.com. Right off the bat, before Spielberg, producer Kathleen Kennedy and the cast and crew start opening up, we learn that Richard Donner (Superman, The Goonies) and James Cameron were potential directors for the gig. Imagine how awesome a Cameron adaptation of Michael Crichton.s bestseller might have been? It.s such a great read, and a wonderful companion piece to Park if and when you go this weekend. Here are a few bullet points I loved while perusing this oral history: - Nicolas »
Beware! Jurassic Park 4 Will Get A Terrifying New Dinosaur
4 April 2013 11:31 PM, PDT
There is still a long time to go before Colin Trevorrow.s long-awaited sequel Jurassic Park 4 hits theaters next summer. Not like, as long as it.s been since dinosaurs actually walked the Earth or anything, but filmgoers are an impatient bunch, especially when it.s already assumed that news about such a high profile project is going to trickle out like droplets from a bad faucet. And so in the meantime, we have the still very worthwhile Jurassic Park 3D to offer some relief. Hopefully the 3D element isn.t too scary for anybody waiting for Jurassic Park 4 though, because it just so happens a brand new species of dinosaur will fiercely saunter its way into the film. An article in USA Today celebrated Jurassic Park.s 20 year anniversary, interviewing paleontologist Jack Horner, who served as a dinosaur adviser for the film. He.s also advising for the fourth »
Pro Wrestlers Vs. Zombies Trailers Is The Most Bonkers Thing You'll See Today
4 April 2013 10:00 PM, PDT
While The Rock has successfully taken control of his post-wrestling movie career, and Steve Austin is doing whatever he does when Redneck Island isn.t filming, some wrestlers and former wrestlers aren.t the marquee names they once were. And when a career is closer to dying than living, it makes sense to go up against something that is already dead, right? And so that.s why you.re even able to watch the above trailer for writer/director Cody Knotts. Kickstarter-funded film Pro Wresters vs. Zombies. Well that, and because Knotts obviously has everyone.s best interests at heart. I mean, there are wrestlers fighting zombies up there! To punk music! And Penthouse Pet Tara Parker inexplicably shows up! Although there isn.t much of a storyline to follow in this trailer, which mostly features everything the title dutifully implies, Knotts . who has two horror movies under his belt »
