Evil Dead
4 April 2013 11:59 PM, PDT
Directed by: Fede Alvaraez
Cast: Jane Levy, Shiloh Fernandez, Lou Taylor Pucci, Jessica Lucas, Elizabeth Blackmore
Running Time: 1 hr 31 mins
Rating: R
Release Date: April 5, 2013
Plot: A group of meddling young adults accidentally unleash a satanic being during their impromptu gathering at a cabin in the woods.
Who’S It For? While it may not stand up to The Evil Dead, I find it hard to think the original fan demographic won’t enjoy even the basic elements of this remake. Anyone looking for a unique scare should take a look; fans of the color red definitely won’t be disappointed.
Expectations: The original film (The Evil Dead) is not a movie I hold close to my heart, so I wasn’t going into this movie with sensitive taste. If anything, I was looking to be freaked out by a fresher take.

Who’S It For? This movie appeals to many different types of filmgoers; those who like rich epics, those who like Ryan Gosling without a shirt on, those who like Bradley Cooper, those who like crime dramas, those who enjoy looking at fast vehicles, and more. But the great aspect about Pines’ appeal is that it offers something unexpected for all. All a viewer must do is sign up for the film’s 140 minute running time.

‘Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters’ starring Logan Lerman and Alexandra Daddario – trailer review
4 April 2013 4:35 PM, PDT
Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters
Directed by: Thor Freudenthal
Starring: Logan Lerman, Alexandra Daddario, Brandon T. Jackson
Rating: Not Yet Rated
Release Date: August 16, 2013
Trailer Score: 6/10
Thoughts by Tsr: NotSharks, a ChromaLusion sea horse, and Stanley Tucci’s gnarly hair/goatee combo: boy, they weren’t kidding when they gave this film its subtitle. Seriously though, it’s weird how uninterested I am in this film, even after this decent trailer. Despite boasting a cast full of people I enjoy, I never bothered seeing Percy Jackson & the Olympians: The Lightning Thief. Now we have Percy Jackson: Sea of Monsters. It exists in a world where I have a newfound appreciation of Logan Lerman (thanks to The Perks of Being a Wallflower), and yet I still can’t muster up much interest.
Having not seen the first, I feel like this gives a pretty solid idea what kind of world we’re dealing with. »

‘The Wolverine’ starring Hugh Jackman and Hiroyuki Sanada – trailer review
4 April 2013 4:34 PM, PDT
Directed by: James Mangold
Starring: Hugh Jackman, Hiroyuki Sanada, Will Yun Lee
Rating: Not Yet Rated
Release Date: July 26, 2013
Trailer Score: 4/10
Thoughts by Tsr: There was a time when I was excited for this film. The excitement was strongest back in the days when Darren Aronofsky was attached to direct – I’m glad he’s doing Noah instead – but even recently I was still foolishly optimistic. Perhaps it was because of how much I liked X-Men: First Class. It certainly wasn’t due to the abysmal X-Men Origins: Wolverine. That was one of my least favorite films of 2009, and it probably should have been the primary influence on my post-Aronofsky expectations. Still, after I compiled my list of most anticipated films of the spring, I looked ahead and gave some serious consideration to The Wolverine for a hypothetical most anticipated films of the summer. Well folks, this trailer »

TSRn: Benedict Cumberbatch Joins Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Crimson Peak’
4 April 2013 4:33 PM, PDT
The Scorecard Review news
News: Benedict Cumberbatch is joining Emma Stone and Charlie Hunnam in Guillermo del Toro’s Crimson Peak.
Source: Variety
Thoughts by Tsr: Guillermo del Toro directing a haunted house film starring Emma Stone, Charlie Hunnam, and Benedict Cumberbatch is an idea I love. Details are being kept under wraps for now, but the director described the film to Deadline as “a very set-oriented, classical but at the same time modern take on the ghost story. It will allow me to play with the conventions of the genre I know and love, and at the same time subvert the old rules.” I have little doubt that del Toro will have a ball with the spooky atmosphere and production design, so I’m excited for this one to get underway.
I don’t watch “Sons of Anarchy,” but I’ve liked what I’ve seen of Charlie Hunnam. »

Tsr Exclusive: ‘Gimme the Loot’ Interview with Writer/Director Adam Leon
4 April 2013 7:00 AM, PDT
Set in New York City, Gimme the Loot is the story of two graffiti artists, Malcolm (Ty Hickson) and Sofia (Tashiana Washington), who want to make the toughest tag in the city: the New York Mets’ Home Run Apple. But before they can mark up a city icon, they need money to get into the stadium first.
This is Leon’s first film, coming after his debut 2009 short Killer. Previously, Leon worked as a set production assistant on Woody Allen film Hollywood Ending, and as a production office assistant on Melinda and Melinda.
Speaking with Leon during Loot’s presentation at last year’s Chicago International Film Festival, we discussed his film, the storytelling trend of other first-time directors, how he strives to make someone’s favorite film, and more.
Gimme the Loot is currently expanding to select theaters.

TSRn: Zoe Saldana in Negotations for Marvel’s ‘Guardians of the Galaxy’
3 April 2013 2:21 PM, PDT
The Scorecard Review news
News: Zoe Saldana is in negotiations to play Gamora in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. If the deal gets done, she’ll join Chris Pratt and Dave Bautista in the space-based film.
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
Thoughts by Tsr: Zoe Saldana may be heading back into space. She’s already gone there in Star Trek, Avatar, and will once again in Star Trek Into Darkness. Now she’s in talks to play Gamora in Marvel’s Guardians of the Galaxy. I haven’t seen Saldana in a whole lot, but I thought she was one of the better parts of Avatar. I’ve said numerous times that I’m really excited for this film, and Saldana will do nothing to hurt that. Gamora is a green humanoid who is the last of her species. She was raised by Thanos (the purple guy in The Avengers’ credits) to be an assassin, »

Tsr Exclusive: ‘The Place Beyond the Pines’ Interview with Co-Writer/Director Derek Cianfrance
3 April 2013 7:45 AM, PDT
The Place Beyond the Pines is a sprawling film from co-writer/director Derek Cianfrance about the connections between fathers and their sons, with drastic life decisions rippling through generations. The ambitious movie stars Ryan Gosling as circus performer-turned-bank robber, Bradley Cooper as a man of justice, Eva Mendes as a disturbed mother, Ray Liotta as a corrupt cop, and Dane DeHaan as the ultimate product of all of these characters’ decisions.
Cianfrance previously directed Gosling in Blue Valentine, the 2010 aching relationship drama starring Gosling and Michelle Williams. For her performance in the film, Williams was nominated for an Oscar.
I sat down with Cianfrance to discuss his film, why shooting is living but editing is death, how his failed first film was a blessing, his uncanny facial resemblance to Gosling, and more.
The Place Beyond the Pines opens in Chicago on April 5.

TSRn: Will Arnett Joins ‘Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles’ Reboot
3 April 2013 7:39 AM, PDT
The Scorecard Review news
News: Will Arnett is joining the cast of Ninja Turtles. He joins Megan Fox as April O’Neil and Alan Ritchson, Pete Ploszek, Jeremy Howard and Noel Fisher as the four motion capture turtles. The live-action/CG film is being produced by Michael Bay’s Platinum Dunes and directed by Jonathan Liebesman (Wrath of the Titans). It’s set to be released June 6, 2014.
Source: The Hollywood Reporter
Thoughts by Tsr: Is there any way this ends without Will Arnett saying, “I’ve made a huge mistake”? I’m sure everybody on the internet has already made that reference in regards to this news, but boy does everything about this reboot of “Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles” feel misguided.
Will Arnett is joining Megan Fox, who will be playing spunky reporter/turtle friend April O’Neil. Arnett’s role is apparently being kept a secret. That tactic might »

TSRn: ‘Finding Nemo’ Sequel ‘Finding Dory’ Arrives November 2015
3 April 2013 7:37 AM, PDT
A sequel to Pixar film Finding Nemo has recently been announced. Titled Finding Dory, the movie (to be directed by Andrew Stanton) is set for release in 2015. Here is a portion of the news releas:
Burbank, Calif. (April 2, 2013) – When Dory said “just keep swimming” in 2003’s Oscar-winning film “Finding Nemo,” she could not have imagined what was in store for her (not that she could remember). Ellen DeGeneres, voice of the friendly-but-forgetful blue tang fish, revealed details today about Disney•Pixar’s “Finding Dory”—an all-new big-screen adventure diving into theaters on Nov. 25, 2015.
“I have waited for this day for a long, long, long, long, long, long time,” said DeGeneres. “I’m not mad it took this long. I know the people at Pixar were busy creating ‘Toy Story 16.’ But the time they took was worth it. The script is fantastic. And it has everything I loved about the first »
