'Nine' review (3/5) - A sexy and energetic musical romp through early 1960s Italy
12 hours ago
“Nine” is a musical that bowls you over with penance and energy. It doesn’t have memorable songs like “The Sound of Music” or “West Side Story”. It does however have an electrifying cast that does its best to bowl you over. For the most part, it does succeed. “Nine” is based on a 1982 Broadway musical. That musical was inspired by the classic Fellini film “8 ½”. It was revived with great fanfare in 2003 with Antonio Banderas in the lead. “Nine” tells the story of famed Italian director Guido Contini (Daniel Day-Lewis) and his attempts to make a new movie. He has problems brewing though. His last two films were flops and his producer is antsy for another hit. Guido is also entering this project without the script. That’s never a good thing. …
'Sherlock Holmes' review (3/5) - Downey may now have two super heroes in his repertoire.
Director Guy Ritchie wants to give us a different Sherlock Holmes than we may be thinking of. The director of high-octane films like Lock, Stock and Two Smoking Barrels and Snatch wants to present the legendary detective from Sir Arthur Conan Doyle’s books as an action hero – the kind of hero you’d find at the center of any Ritchie movie. How could the detective in the cap, smoking the pipe and wearing the long coat be an action hero? Wouldn’t the coat get in the way? Ritchie is relying on what he says is the Holmes of Doyle’s stories, not the iconic image that your mind might jump to when you think of Holmes. Doyle wrote Holmes to be good at anything he attempted thanks to his brilliant mind. He’s not just a master of deduction – he’s a gifted musician, an astute scientist, and a kick-ass martial artist. …

'Did You Hear About the Morgans?' review 2 (1.5/5) - A by-the-romantic-comedy-book bore.
21 December 2009 4:17 AM, PST
So did you hear about the Morgans? If not, consider yourself lucky. If so, and you were thinking of seeing the film, let’s warn you away, shall we? Did You Hear About The Morgans? is a by-the-romantic-comedy-book bore. The Morgans (Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker) are a married but separated couple who have dinner one night and while on a walk, witness a murder. They are forced into the Witness Relocation Program and in turn, forced to spend time with each other. It has an intriguing and somewhat unique enough premise, or at least one that should have made it stand out from other romantic comedies. But once the creators had the initial idea, they let laziness set in. They went with all the elements a romantic comedy has to have. You start with the initial casting of a Sarah Jessica Parker and a Hugh Grant. You make sure they bicker. …
'Avatar' review 2 (3/5) - Do yourself a favor. See the movie the way it was meant to be seen.
21 December 2009 4:05 AM, PST
By now you've probably heard the news: James Cameron is releasing his first feature since "Titanic." Yes, "Avatar" is a big, big movie, but is it the cinema game-changer the studio is touting it as? Yes and no. From a technology perspective, absolutely. For all the times you've been told that you've never seen anything like this, this time, for reals, you've never seen anything like this. The combination of 3-D, motion capture, and production design are absolutely amazing, and Pandora, the alien world the film takes place on feels organic and real, a wholly rendered universe whose creators, though they work in high-end animation labs in L.A. and overseas, have considered every detail and why it exists the way it does. But special effects and technological breakthroughs aren't enough to mask a fairly generic screenplay. No, you can see where Avatar is going after about 45 minutes, and since …
'Did You Hear About the Morgans?' review (1.5/5) - There is nothing deadlier than a cliché ridden predictable comedy.
21 December 2009 3:59 AM, PST
There is nothing deadlier than a cliché ridden predictable comedy. “Did You Hear About the Morgans?” is guilty on all charges. And this is with two comedy veterans like Hugh Grant and Sarah Jessica Parker sharing the top billing. Much of the blame has to fall on Director/Screenwriter Marc Lawrence. He previously worked with Grant on the underrated charmer “Music and Lyrics”. That movie spoke to many children of the 80s and it had several likable characters. The current film offers up seemingly warmed over leftovers in the area of the screenplay. Grant and Parker play separated married couple Paul and Meryl Morgan. He is an accomplished lawyer and she is a high flying real estate broker in New York. Paul cheated on Meryl with a colleague. They go to dinner to work things out and they witness a murder. What happens after this starts the ball quickly rolling downhill. …
'Avatar' review (4.5/5) - The splendor of Pandora awaits you.
21 December 2009 3:52 AM, PST
“Avatar” is upon us and it is definitely worth the wait. Director/Screenwriter James Cameron (“Titanic”, Terminator 2”) has been working on this film on and off for fifteen years. Cameron has stated that he was waiting for technology to catch up to his vision. This is a world that will blow your senses in every facet. Earth is in trouble with an energy crisis with the lack of oil in 2154. A moon light years away named Pandora may hold the key to survival. It has a rare mineral called unobtainium that would help out the crisis in some way. It really isn’t important what the mineral does. It serves as the Macguffin for the story. It just moves the audience to the lush and beautiful world of Pandora. Earth has an outpost on Pandora. The outpost is run by a shadowy organization that has jurisdiction over the military and scientists there. …
'Nine' review (3/5) - Daniel Day-Lewis is the creative soul of snazzy, sexy 'Nine'
21 December 2009 3:36 AM, PST
Daniel Day-Lewis is the creative soul of snazzy, sexy 'Nine' Seldom have so many gorgeous women (or Oscar winners) appeared in one movie but there's more to "Nine" than pretty faces. Director Rob Marshall's period musical follow-up to "Chicago" is a movie version of the 1982 Broadway musical (as well as its later revival) that complements its sexy musical numbers with a poignant lesson about people who make movies for a living. This dramatic addition by screenwriters Anthony Minghella and Michael Tolkin, working from the musical's book by Arthur Kopit, which was based on Federico Fellini's semi-autobiographical film "8 1/2", might not stand out like actress Kate Hudson shimmying in a mini skirt but it does make the elaborate dance sequences by choreographer John DeLuca meaningful. Overflowing with designer clothes, perfectly coiffed hair and the most exquisite lingerie imaginable, "Nine" has enough glamour to stuff "Vogue" magazine for the next 100 years. …
