'Doctor Who' Season 7 episode 7 review: 'The Rings of Akhaten' goes somewhere awesome

The first proper space adventure is a momentous occasion for any "Doctor Who" companion, and Clara's request that the Doctor show her "something awesome" paid off in a mostly delightful fashion in "The Rings of Akhaten."
After last week's somewhat bumpy third introduction to new co-star Jenna-Louise Coleman, this week's installment wasted little time sending the Doctor and Clara off on a life-or-death escapade in a far flung section of the universe. We also learned a bit more about Clara, the Doctor's obsession with her and that leaf Clara referred to as "page one."
This was the first "Who" episode written by "Luther" creator Neil Cross and above all showcased a childlike sense of wonder that may have seemed unexpected coming from a man known for dark detective drama. 'The Bachelorette' premiere moves back a week on ABC

You'll have to wait seven extra days to watch Desiree Hartsock start her quest for love on "The Bachelorette."
ABC has made a couple changes to its summer premiere schedule, including moving the start of "The Bachelorette" back one week, from May 20 to May 27. In its place on May 20 will go will go to new scripted series "Motive."
The show, a Canadian crime drama starring Kristin Lehman ("The Killing") and Louis Ferreira ("Breaking Bad"), had been scheduled to premiere after the "Dancing With the Stars" finale on May 21. Instead, it will air after the final "DWTS" performances on May 20 before going to its regular Thursday home on May 23.
ABC will fill the May 21 schedule with a "Dancing" recap special at 8 p.m. Et, followed by the two-hour finale.
"The Bachelorette," meanwhile, is now scheduled to premiere at 8 p.m. May 27. »

TV ratings: 'Happy Endings' rises a little Friday while 'Vegas' struggles

"Happy Endings" ticked up in its second week on Fridays, rising three tenths of a point in the 18-49 demographic over last week and providing a glimmer of positive news for the on-the-bubble show. CBS' "Vegas," however, struggled in its first Friday airing, failing to reach a 1.0 rating in adults 18-49.
ABC's "Shark Tank" scored the best 18-49 rating of the night, while CBS' "Blue Bloods" had the biggest total audience, as it usually does. "Grimm" scored its best 18-49 rating in four weeks for NBC.
CBS easily won Friday's total-viewer crown, averaging 8.9 million people and a 5.8 rating/10 share in households. ABC (5.2 million, 3.3/6) came in second. NBC took third with 3.7 million viewers and a 2.4/4. Fox (2.3 million, 1.5/3) was fourth, and The CW (924,000, 0.6/1) trailed.
ABC led the 18-49 demographic with a 1.6 rating, beating out CBS' 1.3. NBC managed only a 0.9, but that was still good enough for third. »

'S.H.I.E.L.D.' adds J. August Richards to cast: Is it on the road to a pickup?

A familiar face from the Whedonverse is joining the cast of ABC's pilot "S.H.I.E.L.D."
J. August Richards, who starred on "Angel," is reteaming with Joss Whedon on the show, about the organization that provides support for the Avengers and occasionally has to save the world on its own. His casting was first reported by SHIELDtv.net and later confirmed by other outlets.
No details about Richards' role are available.
Whedon is directing the pilot and co-writing it with his brother Jed and Jed's wife, Maurissa Tancharoen ("Dollhouse"). Or rather, Whedon directed the pilot -- it was on an earlier production schedule than most pilots and wrapped filming in mid-February.
That would mean either that Whedon will shoot some extra scenes for the pilot featuring Richards ... or that ABC has signaled that it's Ok to begin planning for a series pickup. To be clear, the network has not made any kind »

'Kitten Bowl' coming to Hallmark Channel on Super Bowl Sunday; Animal Planet cries out 'Copy cat'

Hallmark Channel is edging in on the "cute animals on Super Bowl Sunday" market that Animal Planet was once thought to have cornered.
The network announced on Friday (April 5) that it will air a three-hour "Kitten Bowl" special on Super Bowl Sunday (Feb. 2, 2014) to directly compete against Animal Planet's "Puppy Bowl," which, it should be noted, includes a "Kitty Halftime Show."
Hallmark is billing "Kitten Bowl" as "the greatest feline showdown in cable television history." The cats, who will be from animal shelters and available for adoption, will compete in an obstacle course including "hurdles of varying heights, A-frame Alpine Scratchers, tunnels, hoop jumps, and weave poles. Lures, like laser pointers, and toys on a string will be used to get the kittens through the course, but food will not [be] allowed." The network notes that "any form of cuteness is the key to the game."

'American Idol': Why are Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj wearing matching dresses?

One of the most notable aspects of "American Idol" Season 12 has been the feud and ongoing tension between judges Mariah Carey and Nicki Minaj. But, in two recent "Idol" episodes, the women seemed to get along just fine in one key way: Their dresses matched. Why and how does something like this happen?
First of all, one thing needs to be made very clear. These dresses aren't just a little similar -- they're almost identical in color. We're not talking about a basic black either. One coordinated fashion choice gave us a super-bright red-orange while the other was a lovely (still bright) shade of aquamarine.

'Veronica Mars' movie script complete: Plus, read the original (Nsfw) pilot script!

Good news, "Veronica Mars" fans! Creator Rob Thomas announced on Friday that he has officially finished the first draft script for the highly anticipated, fan-funded feature film. "There's a lot of work left to do, but it's a movie I can't wait to make. I think it's also the movie you've been waiting to see," Thomas writes in an update to Kickstarter backers.
Of course, there's one week left for fans to contribute to the movie's budget -- and Thomas is definitely hoping to boost the current $4.5 million above the $5 million mark.
"We're at $4.5 million now. That's a lot of money. But for a feature length movie, it's still a pretty conservative budget. Everything you've pledged beyond the initial $2 million gives us more options, and for that I'm eternally grateful. 'Game of Thrones' Season 3 drinking game promises inebriation is coming

There's a good chance that if you're old enough to watch "Game of Thrones" then you're old enough to consume alcohol. With the official Iron Throne beer released and a whole season of shocking events on the way, there are few more entertaining ways to get through HBO's hit fantasy series than to enjoy it with a side of themed beer or Dornish Red.
Fortunately the lovely folks over at Hypable have us covered. They've put together a "Game of Thrones" drinking game specially tailored to the show's third season. HBO's 'Vice' has its virtues

HBO's "Real Time With Bill Maher" has long been a favorite with grown-ups bored by traditional newscasts. Now the network reinvents the newsmagazine with "Vice," a no-holds-barred weekly series for a tech-saturated generation. It premieres Friday, April 5.
Created by the international youth-oriented media conglomerate also named Vice and executive produced by Maher, "Vice" takes viewers on a harrowing, sometimes hilarious journey to the far corners of the globe in search of jaw-dropping tales untouched by mainstream news outlets.

'Once Upon a Time' spinoff casting: 'Wonderland' casts Paul Reubens as the White Rabbit

Have you ever pictured the White Rabbit of "Alice in Wonderland" fame as having a Pee-Wee Herman voice?
Considering that the potential "Once Upon a Time" spinoff, "Once Upon a Time in Wonderland," has just cast Paul Reubens as the voice of its White Rabbit character, the Pee-Wee connection may soon become easy.
As first reported by Deadline.com, Reubens will provide the voice for the iconic character. The rabbit itself will be created using CG animation, as will many other characters in the show. Which voice Reubens -- most famous for the character, Pee-Wee Herman -- will use for the bunny is a mystery. Ralph Hemecker, a frequent director of "Once Upon a Time" episodes, is set direct the pilot from "Once" executive producers Edward Kitsis and Adam Horowitz.

Hoda Kotb: Is she leaving 'Today'?

Hoda Kotb may be packing up her wine glass.
The "Today" fourth-hour co-host has reportedly taken meetings with studios and pitched herself for new hosting possibilities, including a daytime talk show, Entertainment Weekly reports.
While it's entirely possible that this could indicate an exit from the morning show she's worked on since 2007, it could also be chalked up to nothing more than a negotiation tactic: Kotb's contract expires this fall.
A source close to Kotb denies hat she's looking to jump ship, telling EW, "Hoda loves her job at the 'Today' show and adores everyone she works with on the show. Her contract is coming up and she's just expanding relationships and having coffee with a few people."

'The Vampire Diaries': Steven R. McQueen and his arms to return in Season 4

Good news, "Vampire Diaries" fans! We've made a few suggestions as to where we'd like to see Steven R. McQueen pop up next, given his untimely "Tvd" death, and now we know where we'll be seeing him: Back on "Tvd."
Our favorite pesky little brother turned ridiculously attractive vampire hunter hasn't seen the last of Mystic Falls. TVLine confirms that McQueen will be making another appearance before the end of the season... but, as with all good things on "The Vampire Diaries," this piece of news comes with a catch.
Nobody's promising that McQueen will be playing Jeremy.

'Community' video: Watch the puppet and Sophie B. Hawkins tags from 'Herstory of Dance'

While "Community" tends to be a rather hilarious show all of the time, its funniest moments often come in the final seconds of every broadcast. These random and ridiculous tags usually reflect upon the themes of the episode or preview what is to come.
For Thursday's (April 4) episode, "Herstory of Dance," there are actually two tags. The original tag filmed featured singer Sophie B. Hawkins spending time with Troy and Abed. Meanwhile, the aired tag showcased the puppets that will return for next week's "Intro to Felt Surrogacy."
You could only watch one of these tags during the original broadcast, but now you have the chance to decide which is best.

'American Idol' preview: Kelly Clarkson and Scotty McCreery will perform in the Top 6 week

"American Idol" Season 12 is doing a great job in bringing back past "Idol" winners for performances. After Carrie Underwood sang for the Top 7 elimination show, there's really only one way to beat that for the next week: Season 1 winner Kelly Clarkson will perform on Thursday, April 11 during the Top 6 "Idol" results show.
Of course, even Clarkson performing her new single, "People Like Us," isn't enough singing for a single night. She will be joined on the stage by yet another alum, Season 10 winner Scotty McCreery. Both are scheduled to entertain us while we wait to find out which of the Top 6 singers will move on to the Top 5.
In order to make it through next week, each of the remaining six competitors will need to perform two songs. We don't know the theme for one of those tunes, but the other will reflect "A Song I Wish I Had Written. »

'Vikings' renewed for Season 2 on History

History has renewed "Vikings," the cable channel's first scripted series, for a 10-episode second season.
The historical action drama is currently in the midst of its initial run of 9 episodes and is averaging a strong 5 million total viewers, including 2.2 million adults 25-54 and 1.9 million adults 18-49.
Those numbers, however, have likely been inflated by the channel's smash hit miniseries "The Bible" which finished its run this past Sunday. This week will be the first test of "Vikings" drawing power without "The Bible" as a lead-in, but the renewal demonstrates History's commitment to the series even if the ratings slip for the final four airings.

Is a 'Gossip Girl' movie in the works? Not so fast

It's no secret that we weren't particularly satisfied by the series finale of "Gossip Girl" this season... but could a feature film help resolve some of the issues we had with the conclusion?
Rumors spread early this year that series star Blake Lively was blocking a potential movie from being made, because she was "desperate to avoid" reprising her role of Serena Van Der Woodsen.
Star said that Lively's co-stars, like Leighton Meester and Ed Westwick, were "infuriated" by her decision not to sign on to expand the "Gossip Girl" franchise to the big screen.
Not so fast!
Turns out, those rumors were completely false. Lively's rep tells Gossip Cop that there was never a movie in the works in the first place -- or, if it was, Lively wasn't let in on the plans. Lively "was unaware there was even a 'Gossip Girl' movie" to turn down. »

TV ratings: 'Hannibal' premieres soft for NBC; 'Big Bang Theory' dominates the night

"Hannibal" had a fairly soft premiere for NBC at 4.3 million viewers, though that's still up from the last drama NBC tried in the Thursday-at-10 timeslot, when "Do No Harm" premiered to historically bad ratings.
"Go On" took a hit by moving to Thursdays, with its lowest ratings so far with only 2.4 million viewers. Elsewhere, "American Idol" was up slightly from its all-time low a week ago.
CBS won the night with an average of 13.3 million viewers and an 8.3 rating/13 share in households. Fox was a distant second at 7.7 million, 4.8/8, followed by ABC at 6.9 million, 4.7/8, NBC at 3.3 million, 2.1/3 and the CW at 955,000 viewers and a 0.6/1.

'Mad Men' Season 6 interview: Elisabeth Moss on Peggy's new role, Don Draper's lessons and job security

Don't panic, "Mad Men" fans: Elisabeth Moss is very much back in action for Season 6 as secretary-turned-ad agency executive Peggy Olson.
When Peggy decided to quit Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce during Season 5 -- and leave behind her mentor Don Draper (Jon Hamm) -- some viewers worried Moss and her fan favorite character might simply disappear from the show. Although she's not at liberty to say much about the new season, Moss does confirm that she's most definitely a part of it -- and she's been very "pleasantly surprised" with what Peggy has had to do.
