TV ratings: 'Hannibal' premieres soft for NBC; 'Big Bang Theory' dominates the night
5 April 2013 10:12 AM, PDT
Fast National ratings for Thursday, April 4, 2013
"Hannibal" had a fairly soft premiere for NBC at 4.3 million viewers, though that's still up from the last drama NBC tried in the Thursday-at-10 timeslot, when "Do No Harm" premiered to historically bad ratings.
"Go On" took a hit by moving to Thursdays, with its lowest ratings so far with only 2.4 million viewers. Elsewhere, "American Idol" was up slightly from its all-time low a week ago.
CBS won the night with an average of 13.3 million viewers and an 8.3 rating/13 share in households. Fox was a distant second at 7.7 million, 4.8/8, followed by ABC at 6.9 million, 4.7/8, NBC at 3.3 million, 2.1/3 and the CW at 955,000 viewers and a 0.6/1.
In the adults 18-49 demographic, CBS won with a 3.1, followed by Fox (2.3), ABC (2.2), NBC 1.4) and the CW (0.3)
Thursday hour by hour:
8 p.m.
CBS: "Big Bang Theory" (16.8 million, 10/17)/"Two and a Half Men" (13.6 million, 8.4/13)
Fox: "American Idol" (11.3 million viewers, 7.0/11)

'Mad Men' Season 6 interview: Elisabeth Moss on Peggy's new role, Don Draper's lessons and job security
5 April 2013 12:43 AM, PDT
Don't panic, "Mad Men" fans: Elisabeth Moss is very much back in action for Season 6 as secretary-turned-ad agency executive Peggy Olson.
When Peggy decided to quit Sterling Cooper Draper Pryce during Season 5 -- and leave behind her mentor Don Draper (Jon Hamm) -- some viewers worried Moss and her fan favorite character might simply disappear from the show. Although she's not at liberty to say much about the new season, Moss does confirm that she's most definitely a part of it -- and she's been very "pleasantly surprised" with what Peggy has had to do.
But don't expect many details beyond that. "That's my joke," Moss cracked during a roundtable discussion at a recent Los Angeles press day. "I can only say I play Peggy Olson and I work in advertising. I can't even say where I work, or who I'm working with. Super boring."
It's not all boring, however, »

'Glee' news: 'Sons of Anarchy' star Katey Sagal will guest-star as Artie's mother
4 April 2013 11:57 PM, PDT
Katey Sagal is coming to "Glee."
The "Sons of Anarchy" star is used to playing the mother of a son who's always on his wheels. But her maternal instincts will need to adapt to wheels of a different sort when Sagal guest-stars as Artie's (Kevin McHale) mother on an upcoming episode of "Glee."
The news was first announced by "Glee" creator and executive producer Ryan Murphy, via his always-informative Twitter account:
"So thrilled to announce my friend Katey Sagal is playing Artie's mom on Glee! There is nothing this woman can't do!"
Sagal will appear on the 21st episode of the current Season 4 of the musical-comedy series, an episode titled "Wonder-ful," according to Give Me My Remote. As one might expect from the punny title, this episode is expected to be an ode to the music of Motown great Stevie Wonder.

Ali Velshi quits CNN to join Al Jazeera America
4 April 2013 11:38 PM, PDT
Ali Velshi, CNN's chief business correspondent, is leaving the network to join Al Jazeera America.
Velshi plans to anchor a half-hour weekly show on the yet-to-launch Al Jazeera America network that could expand to a daily format before the end of the year. He's been with CNN since 2001, most recently as the anchor of "Your Money," and becomes the first major on-air hire for Al Jazeera America.
Arabic news network Al Jazeera purchased Current TV earlier this year in order to launch a New York-headquartered English-language channel in the U.S.
"I'm thrilled to be joining Al Jazeera America, an organization that puts quality, fact-based journalism first," Velshi said in a statement. "It's a tremendous opportunity and I look forward to taking advantage of the extraordinary U.S. news-gathering capabilities the channel is building and working with such a diverse and talented group of colleagues to tell compelling stories that matter to Americans. »

'American Idol' Top 7 elimination: Burnell Taylor on his career, kissing Amber and going home
4 April 2013 11:32 PM, PDT
On Thursday (April 4) night, Burnell Taylor was eliminated from the Top 7 of "American Idol" Season 12.
He wasn't the most surprising elimination possible, but it was obvious on the stage and at the judges' table that the New Orleans native would be missed on the show. We had a chance to talk to Burnell after the elimination -- check out what he had to say on his future career, his crush on Amber Holcomb and more.
What's going on?
Burnell Taylor: Not much, not much. Just goin' home. No big deal. I mean, everything happens for a reason. Now it's time for me to kill it.
Did you expect that you would be eliminated this week?
Burnell Taylor: Yes, this whole week. And it was basically God giving me a sign so that I could be prepared... I feel I went out with a bang. I did what I was supposed to do, »

Oprah Winfrey meets Tyler Perry's Madea in new Own promo (Video)
4 April 2013 10:55 PM, PDT
Apparently Oprah Winfrey will do just about anything to promote her Own cable network, including reprising her Oscar nominated role as Sofia from "The Color Purple" opposite Tyler Perry in full Madea drag.
That's the goofy concept behind the above promo, designed to poke a little fun at Own's relatively under-the-radar status among cable channels and also remind viewers that Perry has a couple of original shows headed to the network in May.
Drama series "Tyler Perry's The Haves and Have Nots" premieres May 28 and comedy "Tyler Perry's Love Thy Neighbor" follows a day later on May 29. Neither show will actually feature Winfrey or Perry as part of the cast. At least it looks like they had fun filming this ad together. »

'American Idol' Top 7 elimination: Burnell Taylor kisses Amber Holcomb goodbye
4 April 2013 10:40 PM, PDT
When it's time to say goodbye, there's no better opportunity to go for it and steal a kiss. Burnell Taylor obviously felt this way after his elimination from the "American Idol" top 7 was announced. While singing for a shot at a save, Burnell took a moment to plant a kiss on fellow contestant Amber Holcomb.
Unfortunately, the cameras didn't catch the bittersweet moment for the fans at home.
As Burnell revealed during a production package during the Top 7 performances on Wednesday (April 3), the singer from New Orleans has a bit of a crush on fellow singer Amber. Burnell elaborated -- a little bit -- on this after the show in an interview, saying "I don't want people to think it's a crush, because I feel like a crush only involves one person."

'Hannibal' premiere poll: What did you think of Dr. Lecter's TV series debut?
4 April 2013 9:00 PM, PDT
After months of anticipation, NBC's "Hannibal" finally premiered tonight, but did it live up to the hype?
Critics were generally enthusiastic about the idiosyncratic take on the police procedural format from executive producer Bryan Fuller ("Pushing Daisies"), with star Hugh Dancy earning especially high marks for his central turn as eccentric FBI profiler Will Graham. However, there was also a fair share of grumbling about the show's slower pace, arguably pretentious visual style and stomach-churning violence. (As noted in our review, a debate about the show's overuse of young women as victims is one worth having.)
While Dancy's character was previously portrayed by William Petersen and Edward Norton in the feature films "Manhunter" and "Red Dragon" respectively, Mads Mikkelsen has the more daunting challenge of following up on Anthony Hopkins' Oscar-winning performance as Hannibal "the Cannibal" Lecter in "The Silence of the Lambs." (A role which he reprised in 2001's "Hannibal" and "Dragon. »

'New Girl' recap: How did the 'First Date' between Jess and Nick go?
4 April 2013 8:25 PM, PDT
After all the flirting and the waiting and the random making out, it was finally time for Jess and Nick to try to make this relationship work in the most recent episode of \
Too bad that those two crazy kids didn't ever figure out if they were on a date or not. Should the episode even count as a "First Date"? We discuss that important question in this recap.
A phone charger really does bring the roommates closer together
Apparently, the residents of the loft have decided that they must share a single phone charger. Winston (Lamorne Morris) needs this charger. After much wrestling and other childish behavior, Schmidt (Max Greenfield) chases Winston away in search of charger justice.
This leaves Jess (Zooey Deschanel) and Nick (Jake Johnson) alone together. We learn several things from this increasingly awkward moment:
1. Both Jess and Nick have their own secret chargers and just like messing with their roommates. »

Watch online: 'The Americans' Season 1 episode 9 - 'Safe House'
4 April 2013 7:13 PM, PDT
If your DVR cut off the ending of this week's episode of FX's "The Americans," you're not alone. Due to an internal error that caused many DVRs to stop recording before the climatic finale, FX has made the entire episode available to watch online -- without the customary delay following its initial broadcast.
Apparently the information FX distributed to television listings services included an incorrect end time of 11 p.m., instead of 11:07 p.m. The snafu would've caused any DVR relying on the listings to stop recording before the episode actually ended. And the network considered the matter serious enough to address with an apology and immediate online streaming of the episode (it's available until May 15).
"The error is regrettable and I apologize to all the loyal fans of The Americans who were cheated out of the full viewing experience of one of the most important episodes so far this season, »

'American Idol' Top 7 results: Burnell Taylor, Lazaro Arbos or Janelle Arthur, who went home?
4 April 2013 7:01 PM, PDT
Time for some "American Idol" results. Will the men keep getting cut? We won't know just yet, first we have to sit through a group sing to "Somebody to Love" by Queen, which is surprisingly good. Probably because there are so many talented women left.
Ford commercial, video recap of last night, Casey James, some other stuff. Then we reveal the judges' Top 3 -- Keith said Kree, Angie and Amber; Nicki says Angie, Amber and Kree; Randy says Amber, Kree and Angie; Mariah says Kree, Amber and Candice. So, that's not really that interesting.
Some real results -- Kree, Angie and Lazaro are in the Top 3. Oh. My. God. Are you kidding us with this?! Lazaro is soooooo much worse than everyone else in the competition. This not even funny anymore, he needs to go.
Carrie Underwood is there to perform and we'll make no bones about it -- we love her so much. »

Are 'Teen Wolf' fans the coolest 'shippers' in the world? Signs point to yes
4 April 2013 6:11 PM, PDT
Writing for Zap2it, we are too often exposed to the dark side of TV fandom and, more specifically, the dark side of "shipping." If that word means nothing to you in relation to television, congrats, you probably don't have a Tumblr. "Shipping," as pertains to fan culture, describes desperately, badly wanting two characters on a television show (or two people in real life, as the case may be) to get together. It generally refers to wanting the characters to hook up romantically or sexually, but can occasionally refer to friendship, too.
The problems arise when "shippers" become a little too devoted to their particular favorite couple, and they begin to spend all of their waking hours fighting with other shippers, tweeting vitriol to showrunners, and emailing graphic, violent death threats to TV bloggers. (Our therapists are sick of hearing about that last one, y'all.)
And then there is the "Teen Wolf" fandom. »

'Go On': Ryan and Lauren attempt to solve each other's problems
4 April 2013 4:30 PM, PDT
"Go On" has a new timeslot for its final two episodes of the season, so after "The Office" on Thursday (April 4) you'll have the pleasure of seeing Matthew Perry dressed as a basketball.
Ryan (Perry), it seems, becomes jealous of the new Kbal mascot in Thursday's episode, "Fast Breakup" -- but not so much that he's above putting on the costume. He's having trouble processing a message from a drunk-dialing Carrie (Allison Miller), so he turns to Lauren (Laura Benanti) for advice.
Lauren, in turn, is having serious doubts about going through with her marriage, and he offers his thoughts on what she should do. Somewhat surprisingly to both of them, the advice on both sides is pretty sound -- though neither one of them is ready to deal with it in person.
"Go On" airs at 9:30 p.m. Et Thursday on NBC. Take a look at the clip: »

'American Idol' injuries: Kree Harrison and Candice Glover talk about pain and hoping to keep singing
4 April 2013 3:44 PM, PDT
This was the week for injuries on "American Idol" Season 12. Both Kree Harrison and Candice Glover had to perform their songs despite injuries that hampered movement. With Kree's pinched nerve and Candice's broken toe, we had to ask the singers what was going on. Both of the girls gave us the scoop during post-show interviews.
As it turned out, Candice Glover had the less-serious injury of the two. And she had only herself -- and Burnell Taylor -- to blame. "It was all Scooter's fault -- Burnell, I call him Scooter," Candice said of the April Fool's prank gone wrong. "I was running because I was excited... And ran full-on into the door and broke my pinky toe on my right foot!"
Poor Candice didn't even know she had a broken bone until right before the live show. "It happened like two days ago, and it was hurting really bad but I didn't do anything, »

'Hannibal': When Will Graham met Hannibal Lecter
4 April 2013 3:00 PM, PDT
Before there was an imprisoned Hannibal "The Cannibal" Lecter in the Thomas Harris novels "Red Dragon" and "The Silence of the Lambs" and the feature films made from them, Lecter was at loose in the world, working as a psychiatrist and occasionally eating his own murder victims.
On Thursday, April 4, NBC premieres "Hannibal," a crime thriller series that brings the Hannibal Lecter character into today's world -- but the events still take place prior to his imprisonment -- and pairs him with his "Red Dragon" nemesis, FBI profiler Will Graham.
As reimagined by writer/producer Bryan Fuller ("Pushing Daisies"), Graham, played by British actor Hugh Dancy ("Elizabeth I"), is on the hunt for a serial killer. Even though he has the ability to find his way into the psyches of the criminals he's chasing, this particular quarry proves too complex even for him.
So Graham calls on the expertise of respected psychiatrist Dr. »

'Go On's' Julie White on how 'Guys and Dolls' saved her from detention
4 April 2013 2:00 PM, PDT
Julie White was having a terrific week: Her character, Anne on NBC's "Go On," had an important storyline; her indie film, "Language of a Broken Heart," opened; and her voice was the only other one heard in Holland Taylor's one-woman Broadway show, "Ann."
White, who has been an actor for decades, is happy.
"Go On," which airs Thursday, April 4, revolves around a grief counseling group Matthew Perry's character must attend.
"I love that my character is such an unusual character on television," White tells Zap2it of Anne, a lesbian whose partner died. "She is really a woman not about the male gaze at all, and with no apology at all. She is not part of the landscape.
"After you have acted as long as I have, your criteria for a part is, 'Please let it not be embarrassing in any way!' " White says.

'Hannibal' review: Hugh Dancy and killer visuals power NBC's new drama
4 April 2013 1:54 PM, PDT
NBC's "Hannibal" is a beautifully executed television show. It's anchored by several great performances, and it's among the more distinctive and gorgeously filmed shows on the air right now.
And I'm not sure I can watch it beyond the five episodes NBC sent out for review. More on that in a few paragraphs. First, though, the "beautifully executed" part.
"Hannibal," which premieres Thursday (April 4), is a prequel of sorts to "Red Dragon," Thomas Harris' first novel featuring Dr. Hannibal Lecter (although the show is set in the present). It centers on the doctor's (Mads Mikkelsen, "Casino Royale") relationship with Will Graham (Hugh Dancy), an FBI consultant with an uncanny ability to get inside the heads of serial killers. Will's empathy has taken a heavy toll on his mental state, but a new and particularly disturbing case brings him back into the field at the behest of Jack Crawford (Laurence Fishburne »

'Girls': Christopher Abbott quits the HBO series
4 April 2013 12:09 PM, PDT
Allison Williams' Marnie is bound for another season of listlessness when "Girls" returns to HBO for Season 3.
Christopher Abbott, who plays Marnie's boyfriend Charlie on the show, has abruptly chosen to exit the series. Sources tell Page Six that Abbott began "butting heads" with star-creator Lena Dunham as the show entered production on its next season.
"They've just started work on Season 3, and Chris is at odds with Lena," a source said. "He didn't like the direction things are going in, which seems a bit odd since the show put him on the map."
Abbott's rep confirmed that the actor had quit: "[Chris] is grateful for the experience of collaborating with Lena, Judd [Apatow], and the entire 'Girls' cast and crew, but right now he's working on numerous other projects and has decided not to return to the show."
