'Army Wives' Torrey DeVitto on her own boot camp experience

31 March 2013 3:00 PM, PDT

Zap2it: What have you been learning from playing your new "Army Wives" character?

Torrey DeVitto: I'm seeing both sides, since I'm playing an Army wife but also someone who has been in the service herself. All the producers are amazing at accessing all the research that we as actors want and need.

I did boot camp with the guys, just to have the background of knowing what my character went through by experiencing it firsthand. [Military officers] just have to be so mentally on-point and not fall apart when things start going crazy.

Zap2it: How was boot camp for you?

Torrey DeVitto: It was awesome. I loved it. We did some crazy physical training, and it kicked my a**! I'm still sore from it. In Airborne training, it's the same physical test for men and women, so I was there with four or five male castmates.

'Mr. Selfridge': 'Downtown Abbey' gets some early-1900s PBS company

31 March 2013 2:00 PM, PDT

Harry Selfridge made shopping fun. Sure, people always shopped, but it was more of a chore before Selfridge redefined the experience in 1909.

Though many Americans may not know his name, the lush eight-part series "Mr. Selfridge," launching on PBS' "Masterpiece Classic" Sunday, March 31 (check local listings), brings viewers into his world. It's well worth the visit.

Jeremy Piven ("Entourage") is perfectly cast as the brash American in the title role.

"I would describe him as a burst of bright light, hopefully endearing and a powerful energy that possibly takes up a lot of energy in the room and yet is in love with what he does and his family and makes everyone in the room feel special," Piven says.

It's an apt description for the man who seems to always have something to prove and whose charisma enchants people.

'The Bible': Mark Burnett says Diogo Morgado will 'define' the role of Jesus on screen

31 March 2013 1:00 PM, PDT

History Channel's highly rated "The Bible" comes to a close on Easter Sunday (March 31), but it's not going away for long.

The miniseries comes to Blu-ray and DVD just two days after that, on Tuesday, April 2. You can take a peek at one of the extras in the home-video release right now, exclusively on Zap2it.

In the clip, actor Diogo Morgado discusses the feeling he got when he met with producers Roma Downey and Mark Burnett about taking on the role of Jesus. "It didn't feel like a meeting, like a working meeting," the Portuguese actor says. "... I was like, 'I don't know what it is, I don't know what it's going to be, but I want to be part of this.'"

Burnett, for his part, thinks Morgado will now "define" the role for actors, although dozens of men, ranging from Max Von Sydow to Jim Caviezel, »

'True Blood' Season 6 teaser trailer arrives: Naked Billith promises 'you're all gonna burn'

30 March 2013 10:30 PM, PDT

Things are looking pretty bad for the citizens of Bon Temps now that Billith has been born. HBO released a first look at "True Blood" Season 6, and it looks like it will pick up right from where Season 5 left off.

Though the new Bill-Lilith creature looks to be a major threat in the new season, it doesn't seem like it's the only one. "If the humans want war, we'll give them war," Alexander Skarsgard's Eric Northman says as he's shown posing as a detective. There also seems to be some trouble going on in Pam/Tara land as Tara has to stop her lover from slapping her.

But back to Billith. He/she/is really is what people have been looking forward to since Season 5's surprising finale, right? It seems like Stephen Moyer definitely delivers, but it remains to be seen just what kind of creature Billith actually is. »

'Doctor Who': 'Bells of Saint John' recap and poll -- What did you think of the midseason premiere?

30 March 2013 7:52 PM, PDT

"Doctor Who" is back and Clara Oswald is finally here to stay (at least as long as any companion is ever here to stay on "Doctor Who").

The midseason premiere episode "The Bells of Saint John" faced the tricky task of introducing Jenna-Louise Coleman as Clara a third time -- following her debut as Oswin in "Asylum of the Daleks" and return as Clara in "The Snowmen." And Coleman still seems like a perfect fit for the role, but the hour couldn't help but suffer in comparison to those two more engaging, bigger canvas stories.

The central plot of "The Bells of Saint John" was a bit of a misfire despite an intriguing premise ("Suppose there was something living in the wi-fi harvesting human minds") and a couple of reliably delightful action set pieces (the Doctor landing the Tardis aboard a crashing plane and waking up the pilots; and riding »

'All My Children': Pine Valley gets a makeover and Opal gets a house

30 March 2013 2:24 PM, PDT

After being booted from ABC Daytime in favor of food-based talk show, "The Chew" in 2011, "All My Children" has found a home online. The soap will make its triumphant return April 29 at The Online Network, which streams for free on Hulu, Hulu Plus, and iTunes.

Not only did the soap find a new home base at Prospect Park's The Online Network, but it also got an entirely new Pine Valley set. As production changed hands, new sets had to be built and a highlight of the new 'hood is a house for Jill Larson's character, Opal.

"In a soap opera, when you have your own house, it's a big deal," says Larson. "I'm just so thrilled to have this beautiful set, and have this beautiful home. It's so exciting for Opal to have a home again; she hasn't had one for a long time."

TV ratings: March Madness is a slam dunk for CBS

30 March 2013 10:54 AM, PDT

Fast National ratings for Friday, March 29, 2013

There was only one show strong enough to knock March Madness basketball from its No. 1 perch, and that was "Shark Tank." B-ball won the Friday 8 p.m. and 10 p.m. time slots handily for CBS, but ABC had a momentary rebound at 9 p.m. with an original episode of "Tank."

'Doctor Who': David Tennant, Billie Piper confirmed for 50th Anniversary episode

30 March 2013 9:30 AM, PDT

David Tennant and Billie Piper are returning to "Doctor Who" for the iconic British sci-fi series' 50th Anniversary episode airing later this year.

Speculation has been swirling about which former "Who" actors may be seen in the special, and fans should be especially pleased with this news. Tennant and Piper are among the most beloved performers in recent "Who" history.

Tennant played the Tenth Doctor from 2005-2010. Piper was Rose Tyler -- a companion to both the Ninth Doctor (Christopher Eccleston) and Tenth -- from 2005-2006 and made a few guest appearances after. They were both last seen in the 2010 special "The End of Time Part 2," which officially saw Tennant's Doctor regenerate into the current Eleventh Doctor (Matt Smith).

Smith and current co-star Jenna-Louise Coleman will headline the anniversary episode, which will be simultaneously broadcast in 3D on Nov. 23 in the U.K. -- that's 50 years to the day after »

'Hemlock Grove' preview: Lili Taylor oversees gruesome werewolf transformation

29 March 2013 9:59 PM, PDT

"Hemlock Grove" is making a gruesome splash on WonderCon weekend. In a video clip that premiered on IGN, Lili Taylor's character, Lynda Rumancek, looks on with frightening satisfaction as a handsome young man makes his slow and terrifying transformation into a werewolf.

The show, which released its official poster earlier this month, uses the tagline, "The monster is within." And based on this preview, it's not just a saying. After the dude's eyeballs pop out on to the ground to be replaced by beady wolf eyes, and after claws protrude from what used to be his human hands, the face of the beast emerges straight from his face as bloody human teeth hit the ground in piles. It almost makes you forget about what just happened to the guy's back ... Almost.

'Beauty and the Beast' and 'Nikita' on the bubble at The CW: Keep 'em or kill 'em?

29 March 2013 4:12 PM, PDT

The CW closes out the first round of Bubble Watch 2013 on Zap2it, and while only three shows are on the fence for next season, that's still a lot: Since the network only programs 10 hours of primetime per week, that's a full 30 percent of the schedule.

"Arrow," "Supernatural" and "The Vampire Diaries" have already been renewed for next season, and "Hart of Dixie," which has been a fairly consistent self-starter on Tuesday nights, also seems safe. On the other side of the ledger, "Cult" is probably doomed by its weak start in the ratings, and "90210" is officially on its way out.

In the middle are the three shows below. As with the polls for bubble shows on ABC, CBS, Fox and NBC, voting will be open through April 7. Have your say in the polls and in the comments.

'Orphan Black': The dark sci-fi starts slow but builds the intrigue

29 March 2013 2:11 PM, PDT

The newest original series to arrive on BBC America is "Orphan Black," a dark and creepy science-fiction story about a young woman who finds out that she is one of many clones. With this realization comes mystery and immediate danger.

Starring Tatiana Maslany as Sarah (and all of her clones, of course), "Orphan Black" begins on a dark but normal night. While making a tense call on a train platform, Sarah is stunned to see a well-dressed but sobbing woman who shares her face. The shock only grows when this woman steps off the platform and into a train, committing suicide.

Sarah, who is not the most law-abiding of people, quickly grabs the dead doppelganger's money and information. And then she realizes that she might be able to steal the apparently better life this woman, Beth.

Of course, our heroine probably should have remembered that she was stealing the life of a suicidal woman. »

'One Life to Live's' Erika Slezak deems ABC soaps' replacements 'real rubbish'

29 March 2013 2:06 PM, PDT

Erika Slezak makes no bones about her current view of her former TV home.

And she's earned that right, having won six Daytime Emmy Awards for outstanding lead actress as the iconic Victoria "Viki" Lord on "One Life to Live." Along with its former ABC-mate "All My Children," her serial will get an innovative relaunch -- via the Internet and iTunes -- on the Online Network with a new half-hour episode each weekday starting Monday, April 29.

"People stop me on the street, total strangers, and literally put their hands on my shoulders and say, 'We miss you so much!'," the energetic Slezak tells Zap2it. "I think the fans had a lot to do with (production company) Prospect Park's willingness to try to get this back up again. They were just outraged when ABC canceled both shows on the same day.

"I have to say, they replaced them with real rubbish. »

'Happy Endings' interviews: Adam Pally, Elisha Cuthbert and the rest preview the show's return

29 March 2013 1:40 PM, PDT

"Happy Endings" finally returns to television tonight with two new episodes -- "In the Heat of the Noche" and "The Straight Dope." What can we expect from the show after so long away?

On a recent visit to the set of "Happy Endings," we spoke to the cast to get the scoop on upcoming episodes and the move to Fridays.

Not surprisingly, most of the cast are a little wary about what a Friday move could do to the show and its already perilous ratings.

Adam Pally (Max) was very concerned about the future of the show. "I'm nervous about the move to Friday, because I don't think our numbers will be that good," he said. "Friday at 8 is a hard place to score numbers for a show as edgy and, you know, funny as ours." Pally did appreciate that "Happy Endings" fans tend to be loyal, but even that »

Savannah Guthrie flips off Matt Lauer? She says it was her index finger

29 March 2013 12:13 PM, PDT

Unfortunately your browser does not support IFrames.

Did Savannah Guthrie really flip off Matt Lauer during "Today"? The two were demonstrating vacuums during March 29's episode when Lauer cracked the joke, "By the way, this is the first time Savannah has ever used a vacuum." In response, Guthrie swung her finger up in Lauer's direction.

The incident passed quickly, and it's hard to see which finger Guthrie pointed in Lauer's direction. Many assumed it was her middle finger, and that Guthrie had flipped Lauer off in response to his joke at her expense. That's not good for live television, but Guthrie claims she is innocent in "Fingergate."

"Folks!! That was my Index finger! Photo evidence proving my innocence coming! #fingergate #Tgif," Guthrie tweeted. She then went off to post her proof, which can be seen below.

Do you think Guthrie accidentally flipped off Lauer, or do you think it was really her index finger? »

In 'Downton Abbey' withdrawal? Try 'Mr. Selfridge' on PBS

29 March 2013 12:08 PM, PDT

The latest PBS offering on "Masterpiece Classic" is "Mr. Selfridge," a period drama set in turn-of-the-century England. Sound familiar?

"Mr. Selfridge" tells the story of real-life department store mogul Harry Gordon Selfridge (Jeremy Piven), who revolutionized the world of shopping when he opened Selfridge & Co. in London in 1909. Will "Downton Abbey" fans get their period drama fix with this new program? Yes and no.

On the one hand, "Mr. Selfridge" has many of the trappings viewers love about "Downton" -- period costumes and sets, an upstairs/downstairs feel between the wealthy Selfridge, his friends and customers, and the working-class people who are employed at his store.

Related: "Downton Abbey" cast in regular clothes

However, whereas "Downton" has always focused on propriety and upholding the old ways in an ever-changing world, "Mr. Selfridge" is about looking forward, an entrepreneur working his way up the social ladder with his salesmanship and vision. »

HBO Go will live stream sports events by the end of 2013 - report

29 March 2013 10:53 AM, PDT

HBO Go might not yet be offered as a Netflix-styled streaming service (fingers crossed that will happen one day), but it is going to be getting in on the live streaming phenomenon. HBO Sports president Ken Hershman claimed at Harvard Law School's Sports Law Symposium that viewers will be able to live stream sports events through HBO Go by the end of 2013.

The most likely form of live sports that would stream on HBO Go would be boxing. Multiple attendees at the event confirmed Hershman's statements over Twitter, though HBO has not officially announced the shift to live streaming.

HBO Svp of corporate affairs Jeff Cusson refused to confirm the news when The Verge reached out for comment. "We're always exploring ways to enhance HBO Go, but we have no immediate plans to offer live boxing on the platform," Cusson says. No guarantee Hershman's claim will pan out, but it »

'Tanked': Wayde King and Brett Raymer post losses and gains

29 March 2013 10:09 AM, PDT

Whether or not it's because his custom-aquarium business, Acrylic Tank Manufacturing (Atm) of Las Vegas, is featured on Animal Planet's Friday-night hit "Tanked," Wayde King recently found himself the target of a heartbreaking theft.

In late January, thieves broke into Atm, which doubled as home to some of King's many pets, including several exotic birds. The culprits, who also stole puppies from local pet stores, took King's cockatoo and three macaws, along with four bearded dragon reptiles.

At last report, three of the birds were recovered, with one macaw still missing.

"I don't know if they knew they were my birds, personally," says King, talking to Zap2it while relaxing at an outdoor table at a Malibu, Calif., winery, where he and partner/brother-in-law Brett Raymer have just finished transforming a little covered wagon into a wine-themed aquarium.

"They'd seen the store before," he continues. "They definitely scoped it out. »
