Eight New 'Star Trek Into Darkness' Stills

Many pictures from Star Trek Into Darkness have been finding their way online over the course of Paramount's marketing plan, but many of them either come in the form of magazine scans or low-res versions so I have held off on most of them. However, today several hi-res versions have come available and while none of them offer much you haven't seen in trailers, I'm sure fans looking forward to the sequel will be interested. I've added them all to this post, but you can click on any one of them to check out all the pictures I have from the film in the RopeofSilicon galleries. Of the lot I found the most interesting to be the new look at the bridge of the Enterprise as well as the shot of the bridge in all red, which I have to assume is the bridge of a Klingon ship... right? Bradley Cooper Steps in for Jude Law in 'Jane Got a Gun'

5 April 2013 6:58 PM, PDT

I feel compelled to report Bradley Cooper has stepped into the role previously occupied by Jude Law in Jane Got a Gun, the western now filming in New Mexico that was once going to be directed by Lynne Ramsay and will now be helmed by Gavin O'Connor (Warrior) following Ramsay's unexplained departure. The film stars Natalie Portman as a woman whose outlaw husband returns home riddled with bullet wounds and barely alive. When her husband's gang eventually tracks him down to finish the job, she is forced to reach out to an ex-lover (Joel Edgerton) and ask if he will help defend her farm. Rodrigo Santoro co-stars and Cooper will be playing the role of the film's villain. I report this now because I've covered virtually every turn in the film's production, including Law's departure on the heels of Ramsay's exit so this brings it full circle. Deadline »

What is 'Upstream Color' About? Here's My Interpretation

5 April 2013 3:24 PM, PDT

I considered writing a review and then writing a follow-up piece concerning Shane Caruth's sophomore effort Upstream Color, but couldn't quite find a way to do one without doing the other. Therefore, the result is the following, 1300-word stream of consciousness of which I hope makes, at the very least, a modicum of sense. Upstream Color is only the writer-director's second film following 2004's time travel mind-bender Primer and it's sure to confuse audiences on far greater levels than its predecessor and it sounds like he's going even grander, at least in scope, with his next film, The Modern Ocean, which deals with shipping routes, competing corporations and I'm sure multiple metaphorical levels of thinking, or, at the very least, a straight-forward interpretation of today's shrinking world. And so, to Upstream Color, a film I took to be entirely metaphorical, though told as something of a horror, romantic, sci-fi thriller. »

New 'Iron Man 3' TV Spot and First Clip

5 April 2013 12:26 PM, PDT

Marvel and Disney continue the Iron Man 3 marketing onslaught with the first clip from the film and a new TV spot that has the online masses excited. Skimming through the TV spot I found the above pic of a red-eyed guy I have to assume is bad and then just scrolling through the clip it looks like Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) gets all mad at a reporter. Watch both videos below. Iron Man 3 hits theaters on May 3. Marvel Studios' Iron Man 3 pits brash-but-brilliant industrialist Tony Stark/Iron Man against an enemy whose reach knows no bounds. When Stark finds his personal world destroyed at his enemy's hands, he embarks on a harrowing quest to find those responsible. This journey, at every turn, will test his mettle. With his back against the wall, Stark is left to survive by his own devices, relying on his ingenuity »

Watch 'The Place Beyond the Pines' Opening Scene and Trailer Commentary from Director Derek Cianfrance

5 April 2013 9:15 AM, PDT

The Place Beyond the Pines is adding 26 theaters this weekend for a whopping total of 30 and to get a few more asses in the seats Focus Features has released two new promotional videos. First is the opening tracking shot centered on Ryan Gosling's character Luke, a professional motorcycle rider as he enters the "Globe of Death" as director Derek Cianfrance refers to it in the second video, a commentary track over the trailer. I caught Place Beyond the Pines in Toronto last year and in my review I wrote that I left me "tired and worn weary". I added that "it revels in despair with no hope at the end of the tunnel. It's raw, real, downtrodden and forced. Is it good? It's solid. It's also too much of a 'bad' thing." I had a hard time getting beyond the dour nature of the film, which runs for something »

'Trance' (2013) Movie Review

5 April 2013 8:00 AM, PDT

Two things came to mind watching Trance 1.) Danny Boyle is one hell of a director and 2.) this movie isn't nearly as clever as it thinks it is. Sorry to report, but Trance leads to an ending of unexplored avenues with lackluster reveals leaving you to say, "That's what I waited for?" While structured in a way to be deceptive and ambiguous, the story is rather straight-forward. Simon (James McAvoy), a fine art auctioneer gets mixed up with some hoodlums led by Franck (Vincent Cassel) in a scam to steal a valuable painting. However, during the robbery, Simon gets hit on the head and shortly thereafter Franck learns the painting he thought he stole is not in his possession. Double-crossed by Simon, Franck and his goons are determined to do whatever it takes to get the painting, only problem is the blow to Simon's head has resulted in amnesia and he »

Blood and Fire: First Full 'Carrie' Trailer is Here

5 April 2013 6:57 AM, PDT

There are a couple of oddities when it comes to the upcoming Carrie remake and none of them involve the actors, but instead the awesome fact it's directed by Kimberly Peirce (Stop-Loss) and the worrisome fact it's being distributed by Screen Gems, whose last foray into remaking a classic resulted in the lackluster Straw Dogs remake. That said, I'm holding out hope this new film will deliver as Chloe Grace Moretz settles into the title role, an outcast, sheltered at home with her deeply religious and conservative mother (Julianne Moore), but soon Carrie's secret is unleashed, wrecking telekinetic havoc. The film co-stars Judy Greer, Portia Doubleday and Gabriella Wilde and will hit theaters on October 18. Watch the new Carrie trailer below. »

New 'Fast and Furious 6' Poster and Justin Lin Won't Direct 'Fast 7'

4 April 2013 3:52 PM, PDT

Earlier today a small nugget of news came out, noting Justin Lin, director of Fast & Furious, Fast Five and the upcoming Fast & Furious 6 would not return to direct Fast and Furious 7, which Universal already has expectations to drive into theaters next Summer as star Vin Diesel has already revealed the seventh film will begin filming this Summer in Los Angeles. Diesel noted on his Facebook page at the end of March the first test screening of Fast 6 was a success and the plans for the seventh: There was an early screening in La this week of Fast 6. The crowd reaction was surreal... and their demand for the continuation was powerful... It's remarkable to think I first embodied this character in 1999... and the evolution continues. P.s. Filming begins this summer in La, where it all started... talk about a studio in sync with the audience... So while this »

'Disconnect' and Sail

4 April 2013 2:46 PM, PDT

I saw Disconnect last night and at the beginning the song "Sail" by Awolnation plays and, of course, it's not available on the soundtrack even though I have since learned it was also used in the trailer, which I hadn't watched until a minute ago. It is, however, available at amazon asin="B004PVMFC6" text="Amazon" for amazon asin="B004PVMFC6" text="$1.19" if you're interested. The song, as it turns out is two-years-old and really the only song like it on the group's amazon asin="B004L35GAQ" text="Megalithic Symphony" album and the amazon asin="B007Q3VMJW" text="remix album" is crap. I know this kind of music turns some people off, but it's going into my workout rotation (which is pretty much all I purchase music for anyway) and thought I'd share. As for the film, I'll have a review of that next week, but suffice to »

'Evil Dead' (2013) Movie Review

4 April 2013 2:00 PM, PDT

I'm not a disciple of Sam Raimi's The Evil Dead franchise. I've seen the first one a couple times (and not too recently), never seen the second and have watched Army of Darkness a couple times as well. Now when I say disciple I'm referring to someone like the ticket-taker at the theater where I saw the new Evil Dead remake. As we were walking in he asked the gentleman in front of me, "Are you here to see Evil Dead?" He was nearly breathless when the man responded in the affirmative. "Oh man, and I hear there's gonna be another one and it's going to tie this one into the original and-- I can't wait!" I thought I might need to find him a paper bag to breathe into he was so excited. I don't tell you this story to make fun of the kid, but to draw a »

The Horror Remake Takes on the 3D Conversion: 'Evil Dead' vs. 'Jurassic Park 3D'

4 April 2013 1:19 PM, PDT

Evil Dead seems primed for a A Nightmare on Elm Street (2010)-like run. Indeed, horror remakes have always performed fairly well, over 30 of them have opened to double digits. The budget is an estimated $14 million, so my predicted $32.5 million debut would be excellent news for Sony Pictures Entertainment. The absolute low for Evil Dead is something in the teens, but the ceiling is a hefty $40 million haul. It doesn't have huge names, it doesn't have a well-established director, but it does have a built-in audience. Good luck to all those films trying to knock it off this weekend, they're going to need it. Vying for the silver medal will be Jurrasic Park 3D. I'll be the first to admit that I don't get why people buy tickets to 3D conversions, but it's easy to see that they do, especially if the film is built upon fun and nostalgia. One sober note? »

Roger Ebert Has Passed Away at the Age of 70

4 April 2013 12:58 PM, PDT

Only yesterday, Roger Ebert wrote on his blog that he was "taking a leave of presence" revealing he was again being treated with radiation due to a "painful fracture" that made it difficult for him to walk, which was later revealed to be a cancer. As it turns out, that was the last blog post Roger Ebert would make as the Chicago Sun-Times reports Ebert passed away today at the age of 70 years old. For any film fan Roger Ebert was the living pinnacle of film criticism and whether you agreed with his opinion or not, if you were looking for an opinion on a film, his was one you would turn to first. As someone who has been doing this for only ten years, a blip compared to the 46 years Ebert was reviewing movies for the Chicago Sun-Times, I have turned to Ebert quite often. I own all three »

Two Weeks Away, is the General Public Interested in Tom Cruise's 'Oblivion'?

4 April 2013 8:56 AM, PDT

We briefly discussed Oblivion starring Tom Cruise on the latest episode of the RopeofSilicon podcast and I mentioned how I just got this impression there wasn't much excitement for the film out there. I've seen the trailers all over television and Universal has done a great job keeping it in the news cycle each week as we approach its April 19 release date, but that doesn't necessarily mean it's gained the attention of the general public. Personally, I'm a huge fan of Cruise and will turn up for anything he stars in, but even I have to look on with a raised eyebrow considering it's a film directed by Joseph Kosinski whose Tron: Legacy was hardly a quality piece of cinematic storytelling as much as it was an excuse to spend money on a whole bunch of computer generated whatnots and thingamajigs. However, as much as I try and avoid trailers, »

A 'Star Trek' Blu-ray Deal Fans Can't Pass Up

4 April 2013 8:18 AM, PDT

Amazon has an excellent sale running today for the Star Trek: Original Motion Picture Collection Blu-ray box set for only $34.99 and the DVD edition for only $22.49. The set includes remastered, high-definition versions of Star Trek: The Motion Picture, Star Trek II: The Wrath of Khan, Star Trek III: The Search for Spock, Star Trek IV: The Voyage Home, Star Trek V: The Final Frontier and Star Trek VI: The Undiscovered Country and if you know me or read my 2009 review of this set, you know I'm a big fan of the original series, not so much of "The Next Generation". My recommendation, of course, is to go with the Blu-ray set as the DVD isn't in high-definition and at $35 how can you pass this up if you've been interested in buying it? Now's the time. »

Brad Pitt Overlooks Zombie Chaos in New 'World War Z' Poster

4 April 2013 7:59 AM, PDT

It's hard to get beyond how Photoshopped this World War Z poster (via Hey You Guys) looks. Brad Pitt looks plastic and it does absolutely nothing to raise my pulse as this troubled film seems to be lost in limbo. World War Z is based on the novel by Max Brooks and revolves around United Nations employee Gerry Lane (Pitt), who traverses the world in a race against time to stop the Zombie pandemic that is toppling armies and governments and threatening to decimate humanity itself. »

New 'Great Gatsby' Trailer With Music from Beyonce & Andre 3000, Plus the Soundtrack Listing

4 April 2013 7:22 AM, PDT

Warner Bros. has premiered a new The Great Gatsby trailer featuring new music from Beyonce, Andre 3000, Lana Del Rey and Florence + The Machine to keep you champing at the bit for what is either going to be another Baz Luhrmann gem or a visual extravaganza that falters under the weight of style over substance. Clearly the addition of Jay-z to the production as executive producer has helped in the music department. The trailer features a new cover of Amy Winehouse's "Back to Black" by Beyonce and Andre 3000 and the soundtrack itself will include a new Jay-z track called "100$ Bill" and will have additional contributions from the likes of will.i.am, Fergie, Q-Tip, Lana Del Rey, Florence + the Machine, Gotye, Jack White and more. I have included the complete track-listing below. Jay-z - 100$ Bill Beyonce and Andre 3000 - Back to Black will.i.am - Bang Bang Fergie, Q-Tip, »

'Only God Forgives' Red Band Trailer

3 April 2013 3:58 PM, PDT

You all know how much I'm looking forward to Nicolas Winding Refn's Only God Forgives, re-teaming him with his Drive star Ryan Gosling and co-starring Kristen Scott-Thomas and how much I'm hoping it makes it into the 2013 Cannes Film Festival line-up as did Drive a couple years back. Well, a red band trailer has made its way online and I am doing everything I can to avoid watching it. The film finds Gosling playing Julian, a former kickboxer and gangster living in Bangkok. When his brother is murdered by a ruthless Thai police lieutenant, Julian is forced to seek vengeance or risk his own death. Scott-Thomas plays the mother doing the forcing. Weinstein banner Radius-twc will release the film domestically and it's actually expected to hit French theaters in May around the same time as the festival, which tells me it's more likely to be an Out of Competition title, »

'Hunger Games: Catching Fire' Trailer Preview

3 April 2013 10:55 AM, PDT

The first The Hunger Games: Catching Fire trailer will premiere on Sunday, April 14 at 9/8c during the 2013 MTV Movie Awards and, of course, a brief teaser for that trailer has now arrived online and can be viewed directly below. The film is the follow-up to The Hunger Games and begins as Katniss Everdeen (Jennifer Lawrence) has returned home safe after winning the 74th Annual Hunger Games along with fellow tribute Peeta Mellark (Josh Hutcherson). Winning means that they must turn around and leave their family and close friends, embarking on a "Victor's Tour" of the districts. Along the way Katniss senses that a rebellion is simmering, but the Capitol is still very much in control as President Snow (Donald Sutherland) prepares the 75th Annual Hunger Games (The Quarter Quell) - a competition that could change Panem forever. The Hunger Games: Catching Fire hits theaters on November 22, check out the trailer teaser below. »

'The Purge' Trailer and Poster

3 April 2013 10:00 AM, PDT

From out of nowhere, at least as far as I'm concerned, comes a trailer, poster and pictures for The Purge, a new thriller starring Ethan Hawke and Lena Heady directed by James DeMonaco (writer of Assault on Precinct 13 and The Negotiator). Set to hit theaters on May 31, here's the synopsis: If on one night every year, you could commit any crime without facing consequences, what would you do? In The Purge, a speculative thriller that follows one family over the course of a single night, four people will be tested to see how far they will go to protect themselves when the vicious outside world breaks into their home. In an America wracked by crime and overcrowded prisons, the government has sanctioned an annual 12-hour period in which any and all criminal activity--including murder--becomes legal. The police can't be called. Hospitals suspend help. It's one night when the citizenry »
