‘Doctor Who’ Season 7, Episode 8 Review – The Most Important Leaf

Fresh off the Doctor Who season 7.5 premiere, this week’s episode, “The Rings of Akhaten,” written by Luther creator Neil Cross, finds the Doctor facing off against an old god in an unbelievably magical and wondrous adventure with his new companion, Clara.

When Clara tells the Doctor to show her something “awesome” by using the powers of the Tardis, the duo end up on the planet Akhaten in time for the Festival of Offerings – a ceremony by which the Queen of Years sings the old god asleep for another 1,000 years as it feasts on their sentimental offerings. But when the ceremony doesn’t go as planned and the old god begins to awaken, the Doctor goes head-to-head with creature calling itself a god, and Clara finds out the power of the most important leaf in ...

‘Spartacus: War of the Damned’ Episode 9 Review – Balance the Scales

As far as penultimate episodes go, one can hardly blame Spartacus: War of The Damned for wanting to provide a little fan service in the brief resurrection of Spartacus and Gannicus’ gladiator side, as they choose to honor the “Undefeated Gaul” in what is (likely) the twilight of their time on Earth.

While some may have preferred the final two installments of Spartacus to focus on the climactic battle between the rebels and the massive army of Marcus Crassus (and, now, the arrival of Pompey), there is considerable emotional impact in Spartacus’ bloody and brutal decision to take Roman captives and set them against his warriors in a reversal of the violent games that began this ferocious conflict.

On the surface, the impromptu staging of these matches allows the series to honor Crixus’ ...

‘Jurassic Park 4′: 10 New Dinosaurs You Could See

6 April 2013 7:00 AM, PDT

The days of Jurassic Park 4 being nothing but a glimmer in Steven Spielberg’s eye are over. Even though he may not be directing the movie – those duties are being entrusted to newcomer Colin Trevorrow – the buzz is all about bringing the kind of dinosaur adventure fans first fell in love with, along with some new additions and updating.

The most recent report from paleontologist Jack Horner (whom Alan Grant was based on) promises a brand new terrifying dinosaur. We at Screen Rant pride ourselves on our dinosaur knowledge, and therefore know a few who could win audiences over. All better than the human-dino hybrids that were originally planned, too.

Here are 10 New Dinosaurs You Could See in Jurassic Park 4.

Concept Art from Never-Produced 1997 ‘Hulk’ Film Revealed

5 April 2013 9:01 PM, PDT

In less than ten years, we’ve seen three different cinematic incarnations of Bruce Banner and his very big, very angry, and very green counterpart, the Hulk. The character, who was originally created in the 1960s by Marvel legends Jack Kirby and Stan Lee, was first brought to the big screen in 2003 by Eric Bana in Ang Lee in 2003′s Hulk. Five years later, Edward Norton took on the role in Louis Leterrier’s adaptation, The Incredible Hulk.

Both films had similar budgets and did more or less equally well at the box office (which film was better is largely a matter of personal taste), but the Hulk’s most successful role of the 21st century was as part of the ensemble cast of The Avengers, where he was played by a soft-spoken Mark Ruffalo and given liberty to wreak havoc on an entire invading alien army.

First Look At Beast in ‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’; Hugh Jackman Praises Script

5 April 2013 7:16 PM, PDT

Brett Ratner took over direction at the last hour of X-Men: The Last Stand and while the film performed well at the box office, it didn’t for many fans and critics. Unfortunately, the negative turn also affected X-Men Origins: Wolverine and the two non-Bryan Singer directed X-Men films had put the franchise on the wrong track.

One of the highlights from X-Men 3 however was the long-awaited introduction of Beast, one of the original X-Men from the comics. Kelsey Grammer played him on screen and to this day, remains one of the fan-favorite characters of the franchise. For X-Men: First Class, the film that marks Singer’s return to the series – first as director, then moving into a producer role for Matthew VaughnNicholas Hoult was cast as the young version of Hank McCoy, the man who would ...

New Post-Apocalyptic Featurettes for ‘Oblivion’ & ‘Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2′

5 April 2013 4:42 PM, PDT

This year will bring to theaters two very different versions of wilderness. Later this month, we’ll see Joseph Kosinski’s sci-fi thriller Oblivion, which takes place sixty years after the armies of Earth found themselves waging a war against alien invaders, who left the planet utterly destroyed. Then in the fall we’ll find out what happened in the aftermath of Sony Pictures’ 2009 animated adventure Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs, as Flint Lockwood (Bill Hader) returns in the sequel to the abandoned town of Swallow Falls and finds his machine – the Fldsmdfr – has been creating mutated, living animals made out of food.

First up, here is Terry Crews, who has taken over Mr. T’s role of Earl Devereaux for Cloudy With a Chance of Meatballs 2, presenting his findings on ...

‘Hannibal’ Series Premiere Review

5 April 2013 4:33 PM, PDT

The first thing fans might notice about Hannibal, NBC’s recent foray into the world of psychotic serial killers and the (sometimes) unstable minds who are determined to track them down is that, even in this early outing, this series is several things Fox’s serial killer drama The Following is not – i.e., emotionally engaging, legitimately cringe inducing and, most importantly, interested in its topic as something more than a way to push the television envelope.

Certainly, a lot of that has to do with the fact that Hannibal is working with some fairly well known and established characters, so, to a certain degree, the audience is aware what they’re getting into. After all, does anyone ever hear the words “fava beans” or “Chianti” without then imagining Anthony Hopkins as Hannibal Lecter, his piercing gaze burning itself ...

‘Dexter’ Season 8 Teaser Trailers: It Isn’t Going to Be Pretty

5 April 2013 4:19 PM, PDT

Despite a solid viewership as well as overall positive reviews from fans and critics, Dexter season eight is expected to be the last we see of the Bay Harbor Butcher. Showtime executives were interested in keeping the show on the air for season nine and beyond, but series producers opted to end Dexter on their terms – with one final storyline. The decision is obviously bittersweet for fans of the show but, even though we’ll surely miss the serial killer with a heart of gold, it’s better for everyone involved to see the series end on a high note – before Dexter becomes too convoluted or, worse yet, stale.

Dexter has seen plenty of intriguing story lines over the years but with an endpoint in sight, the writers successfully upped-the-ante last season – driving toward a rich closure for the character ...

Marvel’s ‘S.H.I.E.L.D.’ Pilot Features ‘Angel’ Actor J. August Richards in Mystery Role

5 April 2013 3:58 PM, PDT

We’re currently waiting to find out for certain if ABC is going to pick up Marvel and Joss Whedon’s S.H.I.E.L.D. TV pilot to series, even though production wrapped almost two months ago at this point. However, assuming that happens, it might be a while before any superheroes and/or important players from the larger Marvel Cinematic Universe make an appearance (which is partly because Whedon and his fellow showrunners have been too busy to plan that far ahead just yet).

There will be a familiar face from the Whedon-verse in the S.H.I.E.L.D. pilot – not counting Agent Coulson (Clark Gregg) returning after his (apparent) demise during Marvel and Whedon’s The Avengers – and the individual in question is actor J. August Richards.

Shieldtv.net, which was the ...

Jessica Chastain Heads to Guillermo del Toro’s ‘Crimson Peak’

5 April 2013 1:37 PM, PDT

Guillermo del Toro has quietly assembled an impressive acting roster for his next feature-length directing project, Crimson Peak, his self-described throwback to old-fashioned haunted house genre movies – those which used extravagant sets as the playgrounds for weaving spooky yarns about the living being tormented by the most terrible of specters, from the outside world and within themselves (see: The Haunting (1963), The Shining, etc.).

Variety has broken the news story about Oscar-nominee Jessica Chastain joining the Crimson Peak cast, some twenty-four hours after the organization revealed that fan-favorite Sherlock actor Benedict Cumberbatch (who plays the antagonist in this year’s Star Trek Into Darkness) has also signed up for del Toro’s horror feature. These casting deals are being finalized well ahead of schedule, given that ...

Christopher Eccleston Turns Down ‘Doctor Who’ 50th Anniversary Role

5 April 2013 1:09 PM, PDT

Apparently there is a limit to how much bounty Whovians can expect for the Doctor Who 50th Anniversary. After securing the return of David Tennant and Billie Piper – the 10th Doctor and Rose Tyler – many wondered whether Christopher Eccleston – the 9th Doctor – would also make a return trip to the Tardis. Now, it looks like that just isn’t going to happen.

Despite meeting with Doctor Who showrunner Steven Moffat “a couple of times”, Eccleston has officially passed on a chance to return to the show that he helped resurrect when he played the Doctor for one season in 2005.

An official statement from the BBC shoots down a report floated by The Daily Star – a UK tabloid – which had indicated that ...

New ‘Iron Man 3′ Clip & TV Spot: Tony Stark Invites Trouble to His Doorstep

5 April 2013 12:28 PM, PDT

Another day, another bit of Iron Man 3 promotion. In case you’ve been unaware up to this point, the last month alone has brought us new TV spots revealing the Mandarin’s army and Pepper Potts in action (among other things); new artwork and trailers, revealing many new Iron Man armors and battle sequences featured in the movie; and endless quotes from the cast and crew about what this third installment will offer.

Ending out the week, we have a new international TV spot that highlights Iron Man 3‘s connection to The Avengers – and a new clip from the film, showing a reckless decision on the part of Tony Stark.

The international TV spot pretty much spotlights the three major set pieces we’ve seen throughout ...

‘X-Men: Days of Future Past’ Won’t Include January Jones as Emma Frost

5 April 2013 11:23 AM, PDT

It’s beginning to look like Hugh Jackman definitely wasn’t joking when he teased that “every other actor who’s ever put on a superhero uniform” would be making an appearance in Bryan Singer’s X-Men: First Class sequel, X-Men: Days of Future Past. The film will unite not only a significant number of cast members from the 1960s-set story arc that we saw in First Class, but will also include the majority of both central and minor characters from the first X-Men movie trilogy.

For every few bits of information about returning players, however, there has been the occasional news about cast members who won’t be returning. Neither Alan Cumming nor Jason Flemyng were asked to return as their characters Nightcrawler and Azazel, respectively. Now another mutant has officially been dropped from the film’s ...

New ‘Elysium’ Images and Character Details Revealed

5 April 2013 11:23 AM, PDT

Sony and filmmaker Neil Blomkamp are keeping a low profile when it comes to marketing Elysium right now, but that should change once the big-budget titans of 2013 start rolling into theaters next month (beginning with Marvel’s first “Phase 2″ installment Iron Man 3). Blomkamp’s followup to his feature-length debut District 9 has continued its steady, but quiet, drum-beating this week, first by initiating viral marketing - and then, today, releasing a couple more images and details on the film.

Elysium takes place in the year 2159, as the global society has separated fully into “Haves” – who enjoy a luxurious life on the space station called Elysium, which is named for the final resting place of virtuous souls in Greek mythology (a tad ironic, no doubt) – and “Have-Nots,” the rest of the human ...

‘Hercules 3D’ Casts ‘Twilight’ Actor Kellan Lutz As Its Lead

5 April 2013 9:20 AM, PDT

Hollywood’s 2014 movie roster will include dueling copycat projects, as there are two different takes on the Hercules set to arrive next year. The better known project is simply titled Hercules – and is based on the popular “Hercules: The Thracian Wars” comic book – while the other is known as Hercules 3D, and has existed in some form dating back to 2007.

Brett Ratner (Rush Hour 1-3, X-Men: The Last Stand) is directing Hercules, which has Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson headlining and character actors like Ian McShane, Joseph Fiennes and John Hurt rounding out the supporting cast. Meanwhile, Hercules 3D is coming together under the supervision of Renny Harlin, who made a living by churning out pop action movies in the 1990s (Die Hard 2, Cliffhanger, The Long Kiss Goodnight) but dropped ...

‘Evil Dead’ Review

5 April 2013 8:52 AM, PDT

Evil Dead 2013 re-imagines the story first made famous by Sam Raimi’s (Oz the Great and Powerful) 1981 cult-classic flick, The Evil Dead. In this new version, a group of five victims friends travel out to a remote cabin in the woods to help Mia (Jane Levy) kick her drug addiction, cold turkey.

When science teacher Eric (Lou Taylor Pucci) finds a mysterious book in the horrific basement of the cabin, he unwittingly unleashes an evil force that grabs hold of Mia and begins to infect the other members of the group one-by-one. Soon, it’s up to Mia’s estranged brother, David (Shiloh Fernandez), to put an end to the growing evil… if he can manage the courage to do what needs doing.

In the dreaded land of movie remakes, Evil Dead (2013) is that rare example ...
