'Rowdy Rathore' (2012)
Starring Akshay Kumar, Sonakshi Sinha
'Rowdy Rathore' is the latest in a spate of retro-masala action films, usually about good-guy cops with slippery ethics. The trend would be incomplete without superstar Akshay Kumar, who started his career as an action hero before diverging into comedy and romance. Kumar returns to his action roots, while also drawing on his more recent experience, in 'Rowdy Rathore.'
The genre was revived a couple years ago by Salman Khan in the blockbuster 'Dabangg' (2010) and continues with its sequel, 'Dabangg 2,' due out at the end of the year. Kumar, too, has another action masala, 'Khiladi 786,' set for release in December.
But where 'Dabangg' was a celebratory send-up, 'Rowdy Rathore' is unironic rehash. Worse, the masala—which requires careful balancing—is mixed all wrong. Too much of »
