When you look back on the year that was 2009 there are some movies that you knew would make a ton of money (Transformers: Revenge of the Fallen, Harry Potter and the Half-Blood Prince, Up), others that exceeded expectations (The Hangover, Zombieland, Paul Blart: Mall Cop) and those that just came from nowhere and in that last category is supernatural horror, Paranormal Activity. It’s not out in the UK until the end of the month, but stateside has been a sensation, the low-budget ($15,000) chiller taking nearly $87,000 so far, making it the biggest earning independent ever, overtaking the similarly filmed, The Blair Witch Project. This runaway success has been built on viral marketing, Paramount Pictures encouraging fans to “demand” the movie show at their cinema and they certainly answered in their numbers.
