The Sony animated films Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse and Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse have both received immense praise from audiences and critics. The last film ended on a cliffhanger and promised an epic conclusion to the trilogy, but Spider-Man: Beyond the Spider-Verse, which was supposed to come out this March, was delayed a few months ago. Phil Lord and Chris Miller explained that they delayed the film in order to maintain the same high-quality bar they set with the other movies. Although Lord and Miller are hard at work on the third film, Jake Johnson, who voices Peter Parker, says he’s yet to start recording dialogue for the film, making it seem as though the delay will be longer than expected.

Tommy Walcott (Jake Johnson) is stuck in a rut. Perpetually bored, he spends his days in a repetitive, lonely routine of work, working out, and watching old movies. Every now and then, he’ll make his way over to his ex-girlfriend’s house, but he always ends up slinking home without finding the courage to knock on the door. He’s a man crying out for someone to inject some intrigue into his life, and one day that cry is answered. By Andy Samberg.
The Brooklyn Nine-Nine star rolls up in a limousine and offers Tommy the chance to compete in a dark web game show. The rules are simple: For 30 days, Tommy will be hunted by anonymous killers from across the world, with a million-dollar prize up for grabs if he can survive until the end. The one big wrinkle is that the hunters are only allowed to kill Tommy while he’s alone,...

This article contains some John Wick: Chapter 4 spoilers.
This weekend marks John Wick’s long anticipated return to cinemas in the fourth installment of the hitman’s story. Keanu Reeves’ formerly retired assassin has earned a reputation for the merciless nature of his kills, and while the motivations of the “Baba Yaga” might have begun with the simplicity of revenge, his saga has now spiraled into a complex display of the politics of this violent, shadowy underworld. Lucky for us though, Wick’s spiral has also resulted in the creation of some of the most fantastic fight sequences ever put to film.
This action series is relentless in its incredible use of hand-to-hand combat, stunt coordination, and weapons expertise, which all come together to forge an array of tense, visually inventive set pieces that seem to grow bigger and more brutal with each passing release. The best fight sequences...

In "John Wick: Chapter 2," there is a scene where Keanu Reeves' titular assassin meets with a man simply known as the Sommelier, played by Peter Serafinowicz. His speciality is not wine, though. It's guns. And the Sommelier goes onto present Wick with a smorgasbord of firearms as if he was recommending them for a multi-course meal of violence. When I saw the film back in February 2017, each presentation of a new gun accompanied by lines referring to them as "robust" or "dessert" generated a delighted guffaw from the audience. Meanwhile, I was squirming in my seat.
I hate guns. Living in the United States, a day doesn't pass where some horrific tragedy occurs involving a gun. To me, they are instruments of chaos and destruction, and the way so many people in this country fetishize and obsess over their weapons disturbs me deeply. I grew up with a fairly conservative father,...

(Welcome to Best Action Scene Ever, a column dedicated to breaking down the best, most effective action sequences throughout the genre. In this edition, we're kicking off Wick Week with a look back at one of the most exhilarating sequences in the entire franchise: the knife fight in "John Wick: Chapter 3 -- Parabellum.")
It's not happenstance that the "John Wick" movies have exploded in popularity since first arriving on the scene in 2014. Set entirely in New York City and incredibly thin in terms of actual plot, the small-scale original nonetheless is an action masterclass, plunging audiences into an entirely new world with its own unique rules. With each and every installment that's followed, the Keanu Reeves-starring franchise has upped the ante in terms of both scope and scale. Written, produced, directed by and starring Jake Johnson, Self Reliance follows Tommy (Jake Johnson), a man accomplishing nothing else in life except to exist, and attempts to spice up his life lead to some near-death encounters. Along with Johnson, the film stars Anna Kendrick, Natalie Morales and Emily Hampshire.
Tommy is a lonely man coasting through life because he’s afraid to confront his failures, and hides behind his mom (who he lives with). While walking home from work one day he meets Andy Samberg, who invites the wayward man into his limo for a ride to a mysterious location. The actor tells Tommy that he’s been selected to participate in something, but Samberg can’t recall any other details. Once they arrive at the destination (an old abandoned warehouse of some sort), Tommy walks through a red door to a desk where two men sit, waiting to explain what he’s gotten into.

Jake Johnson describes his new film “Self Reliance,” which he wrote and directed, as “‘Jacob’s Ladder’ with some laughs.” The film is a comedy with real stakes: Johnson stars as a man who winds up in a game where he’s trying to win a million dollars while hunters try to kill him. The twist is he discovers that the hunters can only attack him when he’s alone. But when none of his friends or family believe the game is real, Johnson’s character must figure out how to survive on his own.
There are scary moments, but more often it’s also really funny. And the audience screening it on Saturday night at the South by Southwest festival in Austin rocked the Paramount Theatre with big laughs throughout the film’s tight 85 minutes.
“I love ‘Jacob’s Ladder.’ I love it so much. I do get some laughs,” Johnson said after the screening.

Last year, as the industry was looking to lift itself out the pandemic’s purgatory at the box office, SXSW lit the wick on A24’s Everything Everywhere All at Once, which wound up dynamiting the 18-34 hipster moviegoer set in what became the highest-grossing indie film of 2022, the best ever for the New York-based distributor, and now a potential Oscar Best Picture winner.
As such, it’s often been said that SXSW has been a place to launch big studio horror titles and comedies before genre-friendly crowds rather than sell them and discover frosh talent; it’s here where eventual Shang-Chi and the Legend of the 10 Rings filmmaker Destin Daniel Cretton first made a big splash with the Brie Larson drama Short Term 12. Keanu Reeves' retired hitman has overcome countless obstacles while carving a bloody path of vengeance throughout each and every "John Wick" movie. As if having his dog murdered and his sweet ride stolen by Theon Greyjoy (of all people!) wasn't bad enough, he then had to fend off both Ruby Rose and Common, NBA basketball star Boban Marjanović, and practically every contract killer in the world as he attempted to stay one step ahead of everyone else during the subsequent sequels. While the upcoming "John Wick: Chapter 4" will pit our favorite reluctant assassin against even more formidable foes, "John Wick: Chapter 3 - Parabellum" also upped the ante considerably back in 2019 -- notably through the addition of the Shinobi, a pair of ninja assassins played by Cecep Arif Rahman and Yayan Ruhian.

Adam Sandler’s real-life love for the game of basketball is on full display in Hustle, an ode to pro basketball featuring a gigantic supporting cast of NBA legends and rising stars. The feel-good sports drama is a straightforward underdog story in essence, but its true strengths lie in how it delves into the psychology of the game, and the front office intrigue that fans seldom get to see.
Viral clips of Sandler pulling up to random public parks and gyms to play pick-up basketball games with awestruck civilians have been circulating online for years, so it seems natural that his obsession with the game would bleed into his onscreen work. It worked brilliantly in Uncut Gems, and Hustle similarly benefits from Sandler’s understanding of the game and the culture that surrounds it. The two sides of Adam Sandler — buffoon mogul of lowest-common-denominator comedies, gifted actor for serious filmmakers — are making an attempt to bridge the gap with the basketball saga “Hustle.”
Though it’s a Happy Madison for Netflix production (where Sandler has lucratively parked his shingle for years), it’s also an attempt to capture some of the dramatically richer, indie sensibility of his why-hasn’t-he-been-nominated-for-an-Oscar-yet turns in fare like “Uncut Gems” and “The Meyerowitz Stories.”
The result, as directed by the promising Jeremiah Zagar (“We The Animals”), is an agreeable combination drill of humor, hurt, on-court action and redemptive uplift that’s closer to simply being a solidly inspiring sports movie than anything notably representative of the Sandler oeuvre.

A knife fight, books thrown across the room, a broken jaw and a rainy New York. Those are just a few of the many components that went into the sound design and sound mixing for “John Wick 3: Parabellum.”
The film is as much about sound as it is about the action and the acting. For supervising sound editor Mark Stoeckinger and production sound mixer David J. Schwartz, the one question they’ve both been asked is, “How do you record people in a fight scene like that?”
It helps that director Chad Stahelski — unlike most directors — comes from a stuntman background. Stoeckinger says, “He started off a martial artist, stuntman, fight coordinator, and director. He’s very specific about those sequences. That’s one of the reasons why it’s not cut that much, it’s almost like a dance. This was all unfolding to demonstrate the actors were really doing that.
