Ian McKellen plays the title role in Hamlet, and his stage performance is going to be beamed to cinemas.
Ian McKellen is no stranger to a Shakespeare soliloquy. Having played in every one of his plays many times over, from the towering titan King Lear to the Scottish Play and Richard III.
Now, he is bringing Hamlet, often cited as one of the all time great parts for an actor, to the big screen for one night only.
The synopsis reads as follows:
A tale of revenge that has stood the test of time, William Shakespeare’s classic tragedy is reimagined for the modern day as a gripping psychological thriller! Transcending the confines of the stage in a uniquely modern spin, the film utilises nearly every room of the Theatre Royal Windsor to transform it into the immortal Elsinore Castle, from basement dungeon to roof-top battlement. Ian McKellen, reprising his role as Hamlet,...

“I don’t think I’ve experienced a theater season in New York ever like this one,” noted Artistic Director Gabriel Stelian-Shanks. “There’s been a range, a breadth, an expansion of possibility that has been truly astonishing to witness. Theater makers have inspired not only with their creativity, but also with their drive and determination to serve audiences with vision and talent. These nominees reflect the promise and greatness inherent in the work of theater folk, and I can’t help but be deeply proud.

Jessica Brown Findlay was a nightmare flatmate. At least, that’s what she remembers of her time as a student, just a few years before a role in Downton Abbey changed her life. Back then, there were no thoughts of having the perfect property, or making lifelong unbreakable bonds with the people you lived with – if it had a bed, it had a chance. “You had to make quite big compromises because there weren’t specific student digs in London,” she says. “You just had to find a group of people in a space with somewhere to sleep and make it work.” Still, the soon-to-be actor was adamant that she’d make the space she was paying extortionate rent for, her own – whether she had the go-ahead of her housemates or not. “I need to make myself at home within a day or two,” she continues. “I put everything up on walls,...

In person, Ann Dowd, sweet, solicitous and ready to laugh at herself, is far removed from Gilead, the totalitarian state where Aunt Lydia, her alter ego on “The Handmaid’s Tale,” rules with an iron fist, doling out punishment for the slightest infraction. As she sips a cappuccino and raises her voice ever so slightly to compete with the whooshing sounds of a nearby subway or a fire truck’s siren, she confesses that she wonders why she agreed to tackle her next acting challenge. Dowd, you see, is about to launch a sold-out solo version of “Enemy of the People,” a production that will see the actor assume all the roles in Henrik Ibsen’s morality tale. Moreover, she’ll bring the story — about a town doctor who risks everything to expose a scandal involving contaminated water — to life in the Park Avenue Armory, a cavernous space that dwarfs even the largest Broadway venue.

Exclusive: Former ABC chief Paul Lee’s independent studio wiip is developing a TV series exploring the teenage years of Agatha Christie, the iconic British crime writer behind genre-defining characters including Hercule Poirot and Miss Marple.
Wiip has enlisted UK writers Rebecca Pollock and Kas Graham, who penned Ruth Wilson feature The Book Of Ruth, to work up the series, which will tell the story of how a precocious teenager mourning her father’s death became one of the most prolific and beloved mystery novelists of all time.
Set in the early 1900s in Devon, England, Pollock and Graham are planning on writing an action-packed drama, which will be titled Young Agatha. They said it would be a “dynamic and supercharged coming-of-age story” that would offer an “empowering and adventurous take on how she became the greatest mystery writer in history.”

Independent studio Wiip (“Dickinson”) is adapting Robert Icke and Duncan Macmillan’s play “1984,” based on George Orwell’s eponymous 1949 dystopian social science fiction novel, as a five-part series for television.
The play had successful runs at the U.K.’s Nottingham Playhouse and the West End, as well as on Broadway.
Executive producers on the series include Icke, Macmillan, and Wiip’s Paul Lee and David Flynn, with Flynn overseeing the project for the studio.
“As the world grapples with democracy and government in our divided age of surveillance, ‘fake news’ and truth decay, the urgency of Orwell’s masterpiece is undeniable,” said Icke and Macmillan. “The small screen feels like a natural home for his portrait of a society in which people trust their screens more than the world outside their windows. We couldn’t be more excited to work with Wiip to make a bold new version...

There have been a number of attempts to adapt 1984 for a contemporary screen audience and wiip is the latest out of the gates, working with Icke and Macmillan to transform their 100-minute theatre production into a five-part limited series.
The stage show, based on Orwell’s 1947 science fiction novel, first launched at the Nottingham Playhouse in 2013 and enjoyed three separate runs on the West End. It played at the Hudson Theatre on Broadway in 2017, starring Olivia Wilde and Tom Sturridge.
The play made headlines for its shocking reimagining of Orwell’s vision of denialism, propaganda, endless war, and mass surveillance. Protagonist Winston Smith was depicted in brutal, blood-spattering torture scenes...
