Updated with latest: A homeless man who allegedly started the 1,158-acre brush fire in Pacific Palisades on Friday night was arrested after investigators sent to the scene say they saw him starting other fires in the area the following day, the Los Angeles Fire Department said on Tuesday.
Ramon Santos Rodriguez, 48, has been in custody since Sunday. He was being treated for smoke inhalation while in custody and being held on $75,000 bail, according to the Los Angeles County Sheriff’s Department. On Tuesday Rodriguez was charged Tuesday with one felony count each of arson of a structure or forest and arson during a state of emergency, according to the Los Angeles County District Attorney’s Office.
“Just after midnight, Lafd arson investigators were dispatched to the scene to determine the origin and cause of the fire,” the department reported. “Due to the inaccessible terrain and darkness, investigators gathered preliminary information and returned the next day.

The FBI and local law authorities will hold a press conference on Monday morning to discuss how they plan to “hold accountable” persons who committed “significant crimes,” such as looting, burglary, robbery, vandalism, arson, and assault with great bodily injury, during the recent protests and demonstrations in Los Angeles County.
Dubbed “The Safe L.A. Task Force,” the group claims it is conducting criminal investigations on those participating in the local protests that started on May 26 and escalated from blocking the 101 Freeway to torching and looting.
The press conference will be held at 9 Am at the Los Angeles Police Headquarters at 100 West First Street.
Officials have claimed “hundreds of thousands” in property damage stemming from the weeks of protests and subsequent violence. More than 2,700 arrests were made in Los Angeles County to date related to the protests. Nationwide, more than 11,000 people were arrested on various charges during protests that spun out of control.

At Los Angeles Mayor Eric Garcetti’s daily coronavirus briefing Tuesday, L.A. City Fire Chief Ralph Terrazas provided an update on his department’s Covid-related efforts. He also offered praise for Sean Penn’s efforts to provide testing throughout the city.
“We’ve focused in four primary areas,” said the chief, the first of which is standing up coronavirus testing sites throughout the city. Terrazas said these sites were initially staffed by fire department personnel.
“But with the arrival of the Core organization, led by actor Sean Penn, we’ve been able to transition to a volunteer model.”
Penn, in an interview with Deadline’s Mike Fleming last month, explained the strategy behind his efforts with Core partner Ann Lee.
“It seemed very sensible for us to relieve highly skilled first responders, in our case the Los Angeles Fire Department, from having to man these sites,” said Penn. “We...

Update, Sunday 10 Am: With Santa Ana winds dying down and firefighters getting a handle on the Saddleridge Fire, evacuation orders have been lifted for most people in the Sylmar, Porter Ranch and other communities in the north San Fernando Valley areas. The first is now reportedly 41% contained, with onshore breezes and elevated humidity aiding the battle.
While the fire’s cause has not been determined, some Sylmar residents reported seeing a fire burning at the base of a transmission tower near Saddle Ridge Road. Investigators are looking at the area as a potential ignition point for the blaze.
The fire has burned an estimated 7,900 acres. At least three people have been reported dead.
