He studied conducting at the Juilliard School. During his career, he served as assistant conductor of the St. Paul Chamber Orchestra and artistic director and conductor of the Berkshire Opera. At the time of his death, he was a member of the Metropolitan Opera conducting staff. He was guest conductor of many ensembles, including the Prague Symphony, Prague Chamber Orchestra, Orchestra National de Lyon, Orchestra Capital de Toulouse, Philharmonique de Radio France, the National Symphony Orchestra, Minnesota Orchestra, and the National Arts Centre Orchestra (Canada).
