Blake Lively was unrecognizable in her role as a grieving woman who seeks revenge in Reed Morano’s The Rhythm Section. Lively’s Bond-style film flopped really badly at the box office. During the filming of a scene in the film, Lively injured her hand, requiring surgery and shutting down the production for six months. The critics praised Lively’s performance, but her sacrifices were not enough to save the film from an embarrassing fate.
Blake Lively in The Rhythm Section
The poor marketing efforts of the film did not help its case after a thinly written plot. The film had the all-time worst opening weekend record for a film playing over 3000 screens. By the end of the second week, Lively’s film was pulled from 2955 screens.

Theorist Media has a new owner.
That’s right: MatPat and Stephanie Patrick‘s long-running YouTube production studio, along with its channels The Game Theorists (16.4 million subscribers), The Film Theorists (11.4 million), The Food Theorists (4.1 million), and GTLive (2.96 million), have been acquired by new startup Lunar X.
“Steph and I just sold Theorist. We sold our business. This channel is no longer just my channel. This logo is no longer just my logo,” MatPat says in a Game Theorists video uploaded this afternoon.
He and Stephanie launched The Game Theorists back in 2009, added The Film Theorists in 2015, and introduced The Food Theorists in 2020. All three channels put out multiple video essay-style uploads each month, with MatPat hosting every one of them.

Stephanie Patrick's family are dead. A great loss, but one that may not have been an accident. When she's offered answers it sets her on a course for revenge. That path is not a smooth one however, the old saw about digging two graves doesn't begin to cover the effort and errors of her search for retribution.
"it's not a tragedy, it's a cliche", and The Rhythm Section is full of them. A conspiracy wall, a selection of training montages, its depictions of the hinterlands of espionage and vice, the red light and red lines. Yet it does have its moments. The camera close to Blake Lively's face as she makes a choice between waiting and drowning. The camera's cold gaze from above at her lost in the freezing space. Spies may well have come in from the cold in the past, but here this is secret agency found not just.

Matt and Stephanie Patrick, the Og YouTube duo behind the beloved Game Theorists brand, are bringing back their ongoing fundraising pact with St. Jude Children's Research Hospital.
On Nov. 30, which is Giving Tuesday, the Patricks will host their third annual charity stream, with a goal of raising $1 million for St. Jude to fight childhood cancer and other life-threatening diseases. They are very likely to surpass that sum, giving that last year’s 10-hour stream raised a stunning $3.1 million for the nonprofit research hospital. That was a sizable increase of the Patrick's inaugural stream in 2019, which raised $1.3 million.
The third event will welcome special guests including MrBeast, Markiplier, Dream, and Corpse Husband -- complete with interactive competitions, musical performances, video game face-offs, and patient stories. YouTube Originals will serve as the title of the event.

The Game Theorists have substantially upped their #GivingTuesday fundraising game.
The gaming analysis channel, hosted by married creator duo Matthew and Stephanie Patrick, raised a staggering $3 million -- and counting -- for St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital over the course of a nine-hour YouTube stream yesterday that featured appearances from over 30 fellow creator luminaries.
The initial fundraising goal for the campaign to fund childhood cancer research was $1 million -- which was roughly how much The Game Theorists raised last year during their inaugural #GivingTuesday stream for St. Jude. This year’s stream -- featuring a robotic haircut, Iq trivia challenge, and various giveaways that required donations to enter -- easily blew past that tally. The Game Theorists are still accepting donations on the watch page of yesterday's stream, meaning that the figure will continue to grow.

The producers of Blake Lively‘s latest film The Rhythm Section are speaking out after the movie opened to record-breaking lows its debut weekend.
The action-drama directed by Reed Morano (The Handmaid’s Tale) initially received buzz as a female-led James Bond-esque film (the movie was produced by Barbara Broccoli, who’s behind the British spy franchise). Yet, the $50 million production only grossed $2.8 million across 3,049 theaters in its first three days, according to IndieWire.
These box office numbers made history as the lowest opening ever for a movie showing in more than 3,000 theaters.

Sony’s “Bad Boys for Life” is keeping the North American box office healthy as it heads for its third weekend crown at domestic multiplexes with about $17.4 million at 3,705 sites, estimates showed Saturday.
But Paramount’s spy thriller “The Rhythm Section,” starring Blake Lively, has tanked in ninth-place with a $2.9 million launch at 3,049 North American locations — well below pre-release expectations in the $4 million to $8 million range. Opening-day audiences have given the film an unimpressive C+ Cinemascore to go with its 29% Rotten Tomatoes mark from critics.

Stephanie Patrick (Blake Lively) is on a self-destructive path of drug abuse and prostitution after her family is killed in a plane crash three years earlier, when we are introduced to her after investigative journalist Keith Proctor (Razza Jaffrey) seeks her out to begin the new action/drama The Rhythm Section, offering the revelation that the aforementioned plane was not brought down accidentally, but by an act of terrorism.
This, of course, spurs Stephanie to start training to exact her revenge on those who robbed her of her family. The only problem being that she is not very good at the revenge game. Even after the standard “cleaning up” and subsequent training montage (supervised by ex-MI6 agent Boyd (Jude Law), she still loses pretty much every fight she is in and only comes out the winner by accident or because her opponent is just a bit more inept than she is.

Before it leaps off the cliff of cliché into the valley of banality, The Rhythm Section gets in a few good licks. Stephanie Patrick, the wannabe assassin played by Blake Lively, is sure as hell not cut out for the job. She scares easy, fumbles with guns, and can’t fight for shit. Charlize Theron’s Atomic Blonde would laugh her off the screen. But don’t mistake this busy-work thriller for a comedy. Sean Bobbitt and Reed Morano have a common perspective. Both have been cinematographers on scores of projects, and each sees a script from a visual point of view. And when Bobbitt shot 2012’s “The Place Beyond the Pines,” Morano was there as second unit director. So when Morano invited Bobbitt aboard “The Rhythm Section,” a daughter-turned-assassin thriller starring Blake Lively and Jude Law and produced by “Bond” franchise matriarch Barbara Broccoli, he didn’t hesitate to sign up.
“[Reed] has very strong ideas — visual ideas — which is what you’d expect from a fellow cinematographer,” says Bobbitt, well known for his work with Steve McQueen. “It was all about Reed.”
His challenge with “The Rhythm Section” was to create two visual worlds for Lively’s Stephanie Patrick, a woman who begins the movie as a drug-addicted prostitute, damaged and unstable, and transitions into a highly motivated assassin seeking to avenge her...

Notoriously masculine and unwelcoming, the realm of American action cinema as a genre often refuses to give female characters the same agency as their male counterparts. Women’s bodies are typically introduced to absorb brutality and sexual energy rather than exert any kind of physical power or agility. One of the few recent examples to upend these constructs, Steven Soderbergh’s Haywire subverts the gender hierarchy of action kinetics by giving Gina Carano’s formidable operative Mallory Kane space and opportunity to fully express herself violently, a motif critic Kiva Reardon brilliantly explores in her 2013 essay “Haywire’s Body Talk” published at cléo.
I thought of Haywire often while watching Reed Morano’s clunky but fascinating new bruiser The Rhythm Section. It stars Blake Lively as Stephanie Patrick, a traumatized young British woman made weak by addiction who finds purpose in pursuit of revenge. Along the course of her rage-fueled journey tracking an Islamic extremist,...

Reed Morano and Blake Lively are a potent combination of filmmaker and star. Pairing them for an emotional mix of action and drama, based on a series of popular thriller novels? Well, that should be a recipe for great success. Well, it’s not quite that simple. Parts of The Rhythm Section, opening this week, are very well done. Morano’s direction and Lively’s performance are spot on (more later). However, with a middling screenplay and some puzzle stylistic choices, this film winds up being very much a mixed bag. The highs are quite good, especially for a January release, while the lows remind you why Paramount decided to put this one out in the month that they did. The movie is a revenge thriller, told through the prism of grief. Stephanie Patrick (Lively) has seen her life fall apart in the years since her entire family was killed in a plane crash.

Blake Lively’s new film The Rhythm Section opens Friday — and the reviews are already in!
The action thriller, which also stars Jude Law and Sterling K. Brown, has been met with mixed reactions, though Lively’s performance is largely being praised.
The Rhythm Section, long delayed due to an injury Lively sustained on set, follows Stephanie Patrick, an ordinary British woman who loses her family in a tragic accident and sets out to avenge her loved ones’ deaths by killing the killers.
In a review for Forbes, Scott Mendelson notes that Lively delivers a “terrific lead performance” in the Reed Morano-directed thriller.

A bereaved woman hunts down the terrorists who killed her family with help from Jude Law’s maverick MI6 tough guy
A serviceable picture from the 007 stable presided over by producers Michael G Wilson and Barbara Broccoli, and adapted by author Mark Burnell from his own bestselling novel series about the assassin Stephanie Patrick, whose deadly vocation was forged by vengeful rage at the terrorists who wiped out her family in a plane bombing. Reed Morano directs and Blake Lively plays Patrick herself.
The movie is an interesting mix of Le Carré/Ludlum locations, invoked with jittery, paranoid urgency – with a little bit of Luc Besson’s film Léon (1994), which featured grizzled Jean Reno instructing young Natalie Portman in the hitperson’s trade.

It’s a wonder that Stephanie Patrick makes it to the end of “The Rhythm Section” alive. Normal people tend not to survive the kind of sophisticated revenge mission that snaps Stephanie out of her depression and into action-hero mode in Reed Morano’s dark, broody and unexpectedly human payback thriller, which stars Blake Lively as a more-motivated-than-coordinated Post Traumatic Suffering Dispenser.
Lest you fear any mention of her survival constitutes a spoiler, consider this: The movie was adapted from the first of four pulpy Stephanie Patrick novels written by Mark Burnell, so of course she doesn’t die. But she comes awfully close on several occasions, and her near-incompetence in the face of danger makes her relatable in ways very few cinematic assassins have ever been. Paramount is opening the movie in January, the month where Liam Neeson is typically the one to do this kind of dirty work.

You know you’ve got a problem when someone in your movie calls the protagonist “a cliché” and there’s no counterargument, ever, at any point in the film. Reed Morano’s “The Rhythm Section” takes well-worn genre material and removes all the substance and ingenuity, leaving behind only an undeveloped plot, a blank main character, and a sense of gravitas that is entirely unearned.
It hardly feels like a story. It’s as though a vague structure somehow got a mind of its own and wandered into cinemas without supervision.
Blake Lively plays Stephanie Patrick, a young woman who used to be one of the top two students at Oxford, but now she’s a drug-addicted sex worker, which is all the work that “The Rhythm Section” thinks is necessary to show she’s sad. There is a moment halfway through The Rhythm Section that encapsulates the entire film’s strengths and weaknesses. It’s a car chase through the streets of Tangier that is shot entirely from the front seat of the vehicle, as terrified would-be assassin Stephanie Patrick (Blake Lively) flees the all-male enemies pursuing and shooting at her. Director Reed Morano puts you right in the middle of the action in what starts out as a stunning one-take sequence but then simply becomes a camera swinging frenetically back and forth as cars torpedo around your peripheral vision.
Meanwhile, a screaming and vulnerable Stephanie, fresh out of training, reacts realistically and wildly to the chaos around her: this is no suave superspy smoothly navigating through the carnage, but a flesh-and-blood human being. And by the way,...

“The Rhythm Section,” Reed Morano’s new espionage thriller about a female assassin who sets out to avenge her family’s untimely death, is not a female-led approximation of a “James Bond” film.
Though Barbara Broccoli, the magnate producer whose family has been solely responsible for the franchise, is producing the movie, “The Rhythm Section” is decidedly not a “James Bond” wannabe. The protagonist, played by an eminently versatile Blake Lively, receives her training as an assassin from an exiled MI6 agent living in Scotland, and — in the course of her revenge — disguises herself as a chemical blonde one moment and a German anarchist the next.
“Everyone’s saying, ‘Oh, can a woman be James Bond?’ Why would a woman want to be James Bond!” Broccoli asked, walking the red carpet at a special screening of “The Rhythm Section” in New York City on Monday evening, hoping to dispel the...

There have been a lot of action movies in theaters lately, and the vast majority have involved superheroes. The Rhythm Section, however, is a bit of a throwback — an action movie based on a book series. Mark Burnell adapted the screenplay from his own novel, the first in the Stephanie Patrick series, and it’s [...]

Blake Lively knows how to make a stylish red carpet entrance.
On Monday, the 32-year-old actress and mother of three attended the New York City premiere of her latest film, The Rhythm Section, and commanded the carpet in a black velvet off-the-shoulder Dolce & Gabbana gown.
Lively paired the bold look with leather opera gloves and black leather over-the-knee Christian Louboutin boots with button detail, and added a touch of sparkle with an impressive Lorraine Schwartz necklace made with South Sea pearls, diamond chains and a 50-carat Colombian emerald.

What has to be the final trailer for Blake Lively’s revenge thriller The Rhythm Section has hit and, faithful to the book, it looks to be a kaleidoscope of outfit changes and ludicrous wigs. Eimer Ni Mhaoldomhnaigh is on costume design duties for this one.
Not to be all ‘we’ve read the book’ but, well, we have and, to be honest, it’s not that brilliant. However, the story zips along nicely and does features a compelling female lead. Being as Mark Burnell wrote The Rhythm Section in 1999, it’s astonishing that filmmakers have dragged their feet this long in getting a movie made. Perhaps one of the most interesting parts of the book is just how creepily close it comes to predicting the events of 9/11 in New York. To say any more would be spoiler territory, but if this trailer is anything to go by, the film,...

"I'm going to do this my way." Paramount has debuted a second official trailer for The Rhythm Section, an adaptation of the best-selling novel - the first book from the "Stephanie Patrick Thrillers" series by Mark Burnell. The Rhythm Section is described as an international spy thriller about a woman who takes on the identity of an assassin in order to seek out and get revenge on those who orchestrated a plane crash that killed her family. She is trained, then goes out on her own to find them. Blake Lively stars as Stephanie Patrick, along with Jude Law, Max Casella, Daniel Mays, Richard Brake, Raza Jaffrey, Tawfeek Barhom, and Sterling K. Brown. This actually looks pretty damn cool. I've been looking forward to this, and I hope it's as exhilarating as these trailers make it look. And now we know what the title is referencing. Here's the second official...

Blake Lively, is that you? On Monday, the mom of three proved that she can rock any hair color with a behind the scenes shot from her upcoming movie The Rhythm Section. Dolled up as her character Stephanie Patrick, Blake shared a steamy picture, where she can be seen rocking a brunette wig and pin-up girl-inspired bangs, to her Instagram. It's safe to say that The Rhythm Section is showing us a side of Blake Lively that we've never seen before. The 32-year-old actress stars in the action-packed thriller as Stephanie Patrick, a woman bent on vengeance after learning that the plane crash that killed her entire family wasn't an accident. Previously living an aimless life on a path of self-destruction, the revelation spurs Stephanie to adopt a new life as an assassin - with some killer disguises - as she seeks revenge against everyone responsible and finds her own brand of redemption. You may recall, we got a glimpse of Stephanie's drug-addled look before, thanks to some snarky commentary from Lively's husband, Ryan Reynolds.

While finding a bigger audience with The Handmaid’s Tale, Reed Morano’s films thus far have been fairly small-scale with I Think We’re Alone Now and Meadowlands. The cinematographer and director is now expanding her scope with the international spy thriller The Rhythm Section, set to arrive early next year. The film stars Blake Lively, Jude Law, Sterling K. Brown and Paramount Pictures have now unveiled the first trailer.
The film conveys the revenge plot of agent Stephanie Patrick (Lively), who discovers that the fatal plane crash her family perished in was an attempt on her own life. She then assumes the identity of an assassin to track down those responsible. Moved around a few times–from last February to this November and now January–it now has a home on Super Bowl weekend.
