Besides, even for the most avid book readers, diving into Christmas-themed books might not be very high up on their list of holiday priorities. So, what better way to fill in that book void on Christmas than by watching some Christmas films based on books?

Disney’s latest hollow attempt at once again crafting another franchise in the same vein as the early Pirates of the Caribbean, and Alice in Wonderland, A Wrinkle in Time pictures etc comes in the guise of The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. Directed by both Lasse Hallström and Joe Johnston (don’t worry we’ll get onto that a little later) their dual attempt to craft something worthy of entertainment almost, not quite, but almost verges on a criminal offence to the eyes and ears of any audience subjected to it.

Disney’s new take on The Nutcracker is the latest fairytale remake to ditch romance for girl-centred empowerment
It’s a good job Disney has anchored the fairytale sector of its operation around princesses. Princes are pretty much expendable these days. They’re so last century. And when they do turn up in movies, they’re not exactly marriage material anyway. As in Frozen, where one literal prince plots to seize the royal throne, and another figurative prince – the hero Kristoff – is not even required to deliver the curse-breaking “love’s true kiss”. The princess sisters can do it for themselves, thanks. Disney’s latest offering, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms, follows a similar modern tradition. A lavish special-effects fantasia inspired by the fairytale/ballet, it centres on a young girl who enters a magical world and discovers she is really a princess. The nutcracker of the title is a loyal,...

I wasn't really sure what to expect from Disney's new fantasy film Nutcracker and the Four Realms when I saw it. The trailers for the film offered up some very vibrant CGI heavy visuals, but I was curious to see how this new film version of the story would turn out.
The movie certainly isn't for everyone, but it did turn out to be a decent fantasy adventure movie that the kids might enjoy. If you're looking for a safe movie to take the family to during the holidays then you might want to consider this one.
The movie was inspired by E.T.A. Hoffmann’s classic tale, The Nutcracker and the Mouse King, which was famously adapted as a ballet by Tchaikovsky in the late 19th century.
I will say that this movie wasn't really for me. The Nutcracker isn't my thing so the interest level wasn't very high.

Rami Malek and Fox hit a high note with “Bohemian Rhapsody,” drawing $3.9 million in Thursday night showings as it stays on track for a $40 million box office bow.
For comparison, Warner Bros.’s critical and commercial hit “A Star is Born” earned $3.2 million in early Thursday showings on its way to a $42.9 million opening weekend. “Mamma Mia: Here We Go Again” hit theaters with $3.4 million in early previews, pulling in $35.0 million in its first weekend for Universal. Independent trackers are looking for “Bohemian Rhapsody” to open to the tune of $35-$40 million.
“Bohemian Rhapsody” has been heavily criticized for its series of events and its effectiveness as a biopic for Queen front-man Freddie Mercury.

Mackenzie Foy is Clara and Jayden Fowara Knight is Phillip in Disney’s The Nutcracker And The Four Realms.
Tchaikovsky’s classic The Nutcracker Ballet is a perennial holiday favorite, particularly for little girls for whom visions of sugarplum fairy ballerinas dance in their heads. With Tchaikovsky’s beautiful music, Hoffman’s magical Christmas fantasy story, The Nutcracker seems a natural for Disney.
Best of all, The Nutcracker And The Four Realms features dancing by prima ballerina star Misty Copeland, the first African American principle dancer with the American Ballet Theater, With Copeland in the cast, Nutcracker fans can’t be blamed for expecting something like a lush big screen version of the holiday-favorite ballet. But The Nutcracker And The Four Realms is a far different story, with much less of Misty Copeland’s thrilling dancing and much less of Tchaikovsky’s famous music than one would expect or hope.

Yesterday evening Mackenzie Foy and Keira Knightley came to the capital to deliver the Christmas present that is The Nutcracker and the Four Realms. This is Disney’s live-action adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffmann’s The Nutcracker and the Mouse King and Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker about a young girl who finds a Nutcracker doll among the family’s gifts and is charged by her parents to take special care of it.
Mackenzie Foy talked about the physicality of the role, how her martial arts training helped her, and if she’d be up for a sequel and what she thinks of her fans. Keira Knightley told us how she cherished the opportunity to do something less serious than her recent roles such as Colette, and what it felt like to be a cake. She also talked about finding her voice through the music. Ellie Bamber talked about...

Slow torture for kids and grownups alike, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms gives a bad name to the very concept of family entertainment. What went wrong? Where to begin?!? On the surface, this Disney debacle seems like a no-brainer for the holidays: It’s an 1816 gothic fairytale by E.T.A. Hoffman and a ballet with music by Tchaikovsky. What we have here is simply a botch job with two directors — Lasse Hallstrom (My Life as a Dog) for starters and Joe Johnston (Jurassic Park III) for reshoots — and...

Chicago – Film has always felt like a much more accessible way to get cultured than, say, going to watch a play or opera. Watching a foreign film can educate you about the world and history as well as any play. “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms” promised that kind of experience, but your time is better served catching the actual ballet at a local theater instead.

Disney’s newly independent princesses haven’t lost their taste for glitzy frocks just yet – but Helen Mirren leads a diverse cast revelling in a sense of syrupy fun
With this sumptuous ballet-lite live action retelling of The Nutcracker, Disney is having its feminist mince pie and eating it. The heroine here, fiercely independent and brave, follows the Disney-princess-gone-rogue template set by Emma Watson in Beauty and the Beast. But princess fantasies and frothy frocks are a hard habit for Disney to kick. (And what frocks – Jenny Beavan’s costumes are ravishing.) Keira Knightley and Helen Mirren lead the starry cast, though everyone is upstaged by some terrific CGI mouse-acting. It’s like a Hollywood panto has come to town.
The production design presents a gorgeous Christmas-card vision of Victorian London where clever, science-mad Clara (Mackenzie Foy) is grieving the death of her mother. On Christmas Eve she is given a mechanical silver egg,...

Watching a visually spectacular but virtually soulless new family movie like “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” it’s tempting to wonder if such eye-popping dreck has any hope of sticking with impressionable young audiences. Is there any chance that the kids of today might be nostalgic for this hyper-saturated nonsense tomorrow?
It’s a sincere question about a film that often seems like it was only made or Disney shareholders. Is this really that much worse than the stuff that millennials were raised on, and read about on Buzzfeed lists, and flock to see at semi-ironic repertory screenings? In a world where “Hocus Pocus” has become something of a genuine holiday classic, is it actually possible to gauge how good the studio offerings of 2018 might look 20 years from now? Judging by “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” the answer to both of those queries is a resounding “yes.”

Conceived just a smidge over two centuries ago, E.T.A. Hoffmann’s 1816 short story “The Nutcracker and the Mouse King” has been told and retold so many times over the years — as a ballet by Tchaikovsky, as a novel by Dumas, as a Christmas cartoon by Barbie — that we can reasonably conclude there’s no one right way to reinterpret the beloved classic. That said, there are certainly wrong answers, and Disney’s dazzlingly hollow, superficially PC live-action adaptation, “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms,” veers dangerously close to blowing it, squandering a talented cast and some of the most spectacular design work this side of “My Fair Lady” on a version with precious little dance and even less chemistry.
Conceptually speaking, who better than Disney to make a definitive big-screen version of “The Nutcracker”? And yet, both the film’s title and the peculiar circumstances that led co-helmers Lasse Hallström...

The Nutcracker is a feminine, nostalgic holiday delight that balances its derivative plot with sumptuous visuals.
The Nutcracker ballet is a longstanding holiday tradition. Originally choreographed by Marius Petipa and Lev Ivanov to a score by Pyotr Ilyich Tchaikovsky back in 1892, countless theaters and ballet companies around the world mount productions of The Nutcracker every year. So it's no surprise Disney wanted to get a piece of that public domain action. While the Tchaikovsky music was never apiece with previous animated Disney classics that have become an open mine for unending live-action remakes, The Nutcracker and the Four Realms taps into a similar kind of collective nostalgia with its (very) loose adaptation of E.T.A. Hoffman's "The Nutcracker and the Mouse King."

After an October that blew by everyone’s expectations and set industry records, the calendar now turns to a November that should eventually keep the momentum going after a relatively slow start this weekend, with Fox/New Regency’s “Bohemian Rhapsody” leading the release slate and expected to take No. 1 this weekend with a $35-40 million opening from 4,000+ screens.
The Queen biopic is facing mixed reviews with a 56 percent score on Rotten Tomatoes. Critics have panned the film’s screenplay for leaning on biopic cliches and heavily altering the history of the famed British rock band, while failing to reveal anything insightful about them.

Misty Copeland made history as the American Ballet Theater’s first African-American principal dancer, and now she’s bringing her legacy to the big screen in the new holiday film “The Nutcracker and the Four Realms.”

Young Clara gets more than she asked for this Christmas. Played by 17-year-old Mackenzie Foy in Disney’s The Nutcracker and The Four Realms, Clara feels distraught when the most wonderful time of the year rolls around because all she wants is to be with her late mother.
In the new trailer for the movie, Clara discovers that her mom created a mythical land — and now it’s up to her to save her mother’s legacy.
“Your mother was the cleverest inventor I ever knew,” Morgan Freeman says as Clara’s godfather Drosselmeyer in the trailer. “And there was...

While Disney is the undisputed king of the major studios, Tuesday morning’s CinemaCon presentations — including its own — demonstrated why it’s also positioned to succeed on a level that its competitors may not be.
During the state of the industry presentation that preceded Disney’s, both National Association of Theater Owners CEO John Fithian and new MPAA CEO and chairman Charles Rivkin hit many of the same notes: The industry is not struggling. Audiences want an experience that theaters can give and Netflix can’t.
And Fithian made a particular point on the hot-button topic of diversity: “We also applaud content creators and distributors both large and small — for taking significant steps to achieve more diversity and positive representation on the big screen,” he said. “Our customers are demanding it, and we are optimistic that 2017 and 2018 will one day be viewed as a turning point on this front.”

Disney has released the first trailer for The Nutcracker and the Four Realms and it's quite a wonderfully magical visual treat. I wasn't sure what to expect from this movie, but I actually really like what I'm seeing in this trailer. It looks like a film that the whole family will enjoy. The movie also has a great cast, and here's the synopsis:
All Clara (Mackenzie Foy) wants is a key – a one-of-a-kind key that will unlock a box that holds a priceless gift from her late mother. A golden thread, presented to her at godfather Drosselmeyer’s (Morgan Freeman) annual holiday party, leads her to the coveted key—which promptly disappears into a strange and mysterious parallel world. Disney is making a film adaptation for one of the world's most beloved ballets, the Nutcracker. True to Disney, there is far more to the legend than you ever knew before.
The first time I ever saw The Nutcracker, I was about 8 years old. It was part of a school trip to give the kids from a one-road town in outskirts of Houston some culture. I remember entering the grandious Performance Arts Theatre and justing gawking at the decorations they put together for Christmas. It was quite the spectacle to behold. Then, the lights flickered on and off and it was time to file into the theatre to watch the performance. I remember sitting in that dark, bustling row on the edge of my seat, eager to experience this thing called The Nutcracker my mom had always told me about. Then, it began and much like Peter Griffin would in that situation,...

Richard E. Grant is Shiver, Keira Knightley is The Sugar Plum Fairy, Eugenio Derbrez is Hawthorne and Mackenzie Foy is Clara in Disney’s The Nutcracker And The Four Realms.
For some, it’s a annual holiday tradition. Attend a performance of The Nutcracker in December. Choreographer George Balanchine’s production of Tchaikovsky’s ballet The Nutcracker has become the most famous stage production of the ballet performed in the U.S. (Mikhail Baryshnikov’s production is the most famous television version).
On Tuesday, Disney debuted the first trailer for director Lasse Hallström’s version The Nutcracker And The Four Realms. Watch Keira Knightley, Mackenzie Foy and Hellen Mirren in this magical first look at the movie.
