Media Matters for America, the progressive watchdog journalism organization, underwent a round of layoffs today, as its president cited the shifting media landscape as well as its defense against legal action.
A spokesperson said that more than a dozen staffers were impacted. Staffers turned to X/Twitter to post news of their layoffs.
Angelo Carusone, president of Media Matters, said in a statement, “We’re confronting a legal assault on multiple fronts and given how rapidly the media landscape is shifting, we need to be extremely intentional about how we allocate resources in order to stay effective. Nobody does what Media Matters does. So, we’re taking this action now to ensure that we are sustainable, sturdy and successful for whatever lies ahead.”

A judge on Friday moved to halt an investigation by Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) into the liberal watchdog journalism organization Media Matters, issuing a preliminary injunction in the case.

After a Texas law requiring visitors of Pornhub and other adult content websites to verify their age went into effect this week, the Canadian-owned website pulled out of the Lone Star State and users there are now apparently seeking workarounds in massive numbers.
Pornhub’s homepage now displays a lengthy message to those who log on in the state after Texas Hb 1181, introduced in the apparent interest of regulating the “publication or distribution of sexual material harmful to minors on an internet website,” as the law states, went into effect; the bill, which passed in June and took effect in September, makes it mandatory for pornographic websites to verify the age of consumers before allowing them to view sexually explicit content. Users must provide digital identification or use a commercial age-verification system.

In February, Sen. Mitch McConnell‘s sister-in-law, Angela Chao, was found dead in her vehicle submerged in a pond in Texas.
The billionaire CEO of the Foremost Group, Angela was 50 years old at the time of her death. Authorities believed her death to be an accident at first but are now treating it as a criminal case.
Blanco County Sheriff’s Office wrote to Attorney General Ken Paxton, “Although the preliminary investigation indicated this was an unfortunate accident, the Sheriff’s Office is still investigating this accident as a criminal matter until they have sufficient evidence to rule out criminal activity.”
It took an hour for first responders to pull Chao’s body from the vehicle. Ems were unable to resuscitate Chao. The pond where the vehicle was submerged was located on a ranch in Johnson City, Texas. Chao’s husband, Jim Breyer, has ties to the corporation that owns the ranch.

Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton accused President Joe Biden of “running logistics for the cartels” in Mexico.

When Kate Cox was forced to flee Texas after state authorities denied her pleas to terminate a potentially deadly pregnancy, it laid bare the true cost of state control over women’s reproductive health. It’s also made plain that Republicans — despite their claims to hold the moral high ground on abortion — cannot defend the policies they champion when they present real-world consequences.

The Texas Supreme Court ruled against Kate Cox, the pregnant mother who sought permission to obtain an emergency abortion, on Monday.
“These laws reflect the policy choice that the Legislature has made, and the courts must respect that choice,” the court’s seven-page ruling read. The court found that Cox’s doctor, Dr. Damla Karsan, had “asked a court to pre-authorize the abortion yet she could not, or at least did not, attest to the court that Ms. Cox’s condition poses the risks the exception requires.”

Kate Cox, the Texas mother who sought permission to obtain an abortion, has been forced to flee the state to get medical care, her lawyers said on Monday.
“This past week of legal limbo has been hellish for Kate,” said Nancy Northup, president and CEO at the Center for Reproductive Rights, which represents Cox. “She’s been in and out of the emergency room and she couldn’t wait any longer.”
Cox, who lives in the Dallas area, was 20 weeks pregnant with her third child when the baby was diagnosed with trisomy 18, a fatal condition.

The Texas Supreme Court has blocked a judge’s ruling that allowed a pregnant woman with a fatal fetal abnormality to have an abortion.
The decision has brought attention to the state’s medical exception to its controversial ban on abortions after six weeks, which is considered one of the strictest in the nation.
The lawsuit was filed by Kate Cox, a 31-year-old woman currently 20 weeks pregnant. Cox sought a temporary block on the state’s abortion ban, as she has been unable to undergo the procedure.
The lawsuit states Cox’s baby has been diagnosed with trisomy 18, a condition that is not expected to allow for more than a few days of survival outside the womb.
After the ruling, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton (R) warned Cox’s physician that she could potentially face civil and criminal penalties if she performed the court-ordered procedure.

U.S. Rep. Greg Casar (D-Texas) thinks his ruby-red home state of Texas is going blue.
Casar spoke about his 2022 campaign, which was featured in the new documentary Texas, U.S.A., with uInterview founder Erik Meers.
“It was a really fast and quick campaign,” Casar recalled. “I was committed to being an Austin city council member, had been working to make sure that people’s homes weren’t lost during the pandemic, make sure that people were able to survive that time of sickness and difficulty for so many people was working on that recovery.”
When the seat opened up in Congress, Casar decided that this “felt like the right moment” as he wanted to speak about “the really big issues facing people across the country, but especially in Texas where abortion was starting to become outlawed.”
During his campaign, abortion was outlawed in Texas right after the state had faced major natural disasters.

American laws designed to prevent censorship on social media have suffered numerous defeats in court. On September 16, however, the most notable of those laws picked up an important win. A U.S. Circuit Court has ruled in favor of Hb 20, which aims to prevent platforms like YouTube, Twitter, and Facebook from taking any action that would “discriminate against expression.”
Texas Governor Greg Abbott worked with the state’s Attorney General, Ken Paxton, to pass Hb 20 last year. The courts have played ping-pong with the edict’s legal status since then. Hb 20 was initially prevented from taking effect via an injunction, but a federal appeals court reversed that decision this past May. In response, a coalition representing several major tech companies rushed the law to the Supreme Court, where a 5-4 majority voted to reinstate the injunction.
Now, two judge on the 5th Circuit Court of Appeals have declared that Hb 20 is “constitutionally allowed.

Photo: Queer Representation in Media Overview LGBTQ+ youth in the United States risk losing their right to comprehensive health care and education in the states of Florida and Texas. As of February 2022, the so-called “Don’t Say Gay” bill has passed Florida’s House of Representatives and now moves on to the State Senate. This legislation bans the discussion of sexual orientation or gender identity in classrooms of kindergarten through third-grade levels, “or in a manner that is not age-appropriate or developmentally appropriate for students in accordance with state standards”. Texas governor, Greg Abbott, in turn, has written a letter to the Texas Department of Family and Protective Services, urging them to “conduct a prompt and thorough investigation” of reported cases of minors receiving gender-affirming medical care. Texas Attorney General, Ken Paxton, issued an opinion on the matter stating that allowing minors to receive gender-affirming medical care is constituted as child abuse under state law.

Elliot Page is denouncing the latest "dangerous" attack on transgender youth to come out of Texas. On Feb. 21, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton proclaimed that gender-affirming healthcare for trans minors, such as hormone therapy and puberty-suppressing drugs, is considered "child abuse." The following day, Governor Greg Abbott took the declaration one step further by ordering state agencies to investigate all instances of these treatments, adding that any medical professionals or teachers who fail to report minors getting such care will face criminal penalties.
"I stand with trans youth and their families."
"I am horrified by the inhumane and downright dangerous declarations by the Texas Governor and Attorney General," Page said in a statement to Variety on Feb. 24. "Trans youth deserve gender-affirming care and to be able to live their true, authentic selves without fear and oppression. I stand with trans youth and their families."

Elliot Page is speaking out to help protect the rights of trans youth in Texas. The Juno actor, who came out as transgender in 2020, said he is "horrified" after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton issued a written opinion on Feb. 21 defining gender-affirming care, such as hormone therapy and puberty blockers, as child abuse under state laws. A day after Ken's opinion was released, Gov. Greg Abbott showed his support by issuing a directive for the state's child welfare agency to launch "prompt and thorough investigations" into reports of "gender-transitioning procedures." Elliot,...

Elliot Page is “horrified” by Texas government officials declaring that medical care for transgender youth is child abuse. The “Juno” actor spoke out after Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton proclaimed Monday that hormone therapy, puberty blockers and other types of gender-affirming health care for trans youth are forms of chid abuse.
“There is no doubt that these procedures are ‘abuse’ under Texas law, and thus must be halted,” Paxton said in a news release. “The Texas Department of Family and Protective Services has a responsibility to act accordingly. I’ll do everything I can to protect those who take advantage of and harm young Texans.”
Paxton added on Twitter that gender-affirming procedures for children “are monstrous and tragic.” His views were later supported by Texas Gov. Greg Abbott, who called on state agencies to conduct “prompt and thorough investigations” into the use of gender-affirming care for trans youth.

Trans rights are under assault in America, and nowhere is the state-sponsored persecution more alarming than in Texas.
Governor Greg Abbott and Attorney General Ken Paxton are teaming up for what appears to be an effort to force families with trans youth to move out of the state. Abbott in a letter on Tuesday directed state agencies to investigate the use of gender-affirming care for trans children, citing an opinion Paxton issued days earlier holding that such care “can legally constitute child abuse under several provisions” of Texas law.

Republicans were appalled in the summer of 2020 when Black Lives Matter demonstrations broke out in cities across America. The demonstrations were overwhelmingly peaceful, but the GOP cast the entire movement as violent, paving the way for several states to pass anti-protest legislation. GOP-led states passed similar legislation a few years earlier in response the wave of demonstrations objecting to newly elected President Donald Trump.
Some of that legislation focused on cracking down on protests that blocked roadways, which just so happens to be a pretty key component of the Canadian...

Update: The Texas attorney general, Ken Paxton (R), said Wednesday that the office will investigate GoFundMe after its decision to end a fundraising effort aimed at assisting the “Freedom Convoy” in Canada. Paxton said they will review possible breaches or violations of the Texas Deceptive Trade Practices Act.
Missouri’s Ag Eric Schmitt is also probing the company, accusing GoFundMe of trying to silence the Freedom Convoy.
The protest is broadening outside Ottowa as well. Protest convoys are gearing up elsewhere in Canada, in the US, Europe and New Zealand.
Earlier The GoFundMe website has reversed course and decided to automatically refund donations to the truckers organization leading a protest against Canadian pandemic restrictions. But politicians vowed to investigate the website’s original plans for dealing with donations to the truckers.

Confederate Flags, Conspiracies, and the Ghost of JFK Jr.: What I Saw at Trump’s Bananas Texas Rally
Conroe, Texas — The Donald Trump train made its second stop here this Saturday with a coterie of politicians, conspiracy theorists, and grifters in tow. It came on the heels of a Lara Trump rally in north Texas this past Thursday and just two weeks after a similar rally in Phoenix, Arizona. Meanwhile, six hours south at the border, the disgraced QAnon peddling general Michael Flynn and other far-right figures held an event at the exact same time followed up by a caravan to the border on Sunday. Texas Agriculture Commissioner Sid Miller,...

Lara Trump, who recently made headlines for speculating on Fox News that Clippy the Microsoft Word assistant is spying on her documents, made a pit stop in north Texas Wednesday ahead of her father-in-law’s rally in Houston this Saturday to speak at an event organized by the Collin County Conservative Republicans and the Dallas Jewish Conservatives.

In his bid for state Attorney General, George P. Bush puts “Defend Our Law Enforcement” at the heart of his “pro-Texas agenda.” It’s a law-and-order message that has earned him prominent endorsements, including from the National Border Patrol Council.
Bush’s endorsement page also recently included a plug from a top north Texas lawman who insisted Texas “needs a clear leader who backs the blue.” But that official, Sheriff Jeffrey C. Lyde of Clay County, has become notorious in recent days — and his plug has been scrubbed from Bush’s website.

Twitter was handed a small setback on Tuesday when a federal judge refused to advance a lawsuit that it brought against Texas attorney general Ken Paxton.
The suit was filed after Donald Trump’s account was suspended and Paxton began investigating Twitter’s policies and procedures related to content moderation. “Twitter/Facebook closing conservative accts,” tweeted Paxton. “As Ag, I will fight them with all I’ve got.”
Twitter, supported via an amicus brief from media companies, alleged that Paxton was abusing his authority by seeking to harass and intimidate in retaliation for its exercise of First Amendment rights. Rather unusually, the social media giant filed ...

When Twitter decided earlier this year to kick Donald Trump off its platform, the decision got under the skin of many of the ex-president’s followers. To some right wing critics of the social media company, it represented more evidence that Big Tech should lose its legal shield. Nowhere was the furor stronger than the great state of Texas, whose lawmakers began considering whether to prohibit social media companies from banning users based on certain viewpoints. The constitutionality of that potential action aside, Texas Attorney General Ken Paxton went even further by opening up an investigation into Twitter’s policies and procedures ...

Kelly Loeffler had been a senator for just a few weeks when she found herself at the pulpit of the Rev. Raphael Warnock’s church in Atlanta. He was only 10 days from entering the race for her senate seat, but she was still included as part of the speaking lineup for the Martin Luther King, Jr. Day service at Ebenezer Baptist, where the civil-rights giant was once a pastor. Nearly a year later, Loeffler would call Ebenezer a place of “radical liberalism” during a debate with Warnock. But on that January day,...

Newsmax host Greg Kelly sounded like a whiny broken record on Friday, repeatedly yelling “it’s not over!” after the Supreme Court turned down a Texas lawsuit pushing to overturn election results in four key battleground states.
That means that despite the Trump administration’s ceaseless efforts to flip the presidential election in his favor, Joe Biden remains the President-Elect.
But Kelly, like Trump and so many of his supporters, is still not willing to throw in the towel.
“It’s not over. It’s not over,” Kelly said in the Newsmax segment, which you can watch above. “Yes, there is breaking news, the Supreme Court has turned down — you can put that — yeah, go ahead, leave it up,” he said, pausing to acknowledge the graphic on the screen next to him that read “It’s Not Over (Not Even Close)” above a picture of Trump.
