One of the best monster movies has invaded the screens from director Michael Matthews, Love And Monsters.

Love And Monsters starts out with a bang. Literally. The exposition puts you squarely in the “you are here” of the story, and so minimal time is wasted on trying to figure it all out.

Michael Matthews’ and destined for a theatrical release despite not being adapted from a comic book or carried by a major star. Well, maybe “destined” isn’t the right word, as a certain pandemic (you know the one) came along and compelled Paramount to scuttle a multiplex release in favor of a VOD play. And while it might be legally accurate to say that “Love and Monsters” isn’t based on pre-existing material, it couldn’t be more obvious that it was conceived by someone who saw “Zombieland” on TV one night and thought to themselves: “I could do it better. And with bugs.” Lucky for us, they were right — or at least right enough that it’s a blast to watch them try.

We’re seven years past the apocalypse. Eight years since the world banded together to send every nuclear missile on Earth into the sky to stop an asteroid hell-bent on destroying all life. Things obviously didn’t work out too well if the latter wasn’t able to stop the former. Ends up that that much radioactivity falling back down through the atmosphere was just as cataclysmic—killing off a lot of the population and mutating cold-blooded animals/insects into giant monsters that ultimately killed the rest. Ninety-five percent of humanity was wiped out when all was said and done with the remaining five doing what they could to survive in underground bunkers. So any hope of seeing someone outside your colony starts with braving a suicide run few could ever survive.

Love and Monsters star Dylan O’Brien said there’s no better time to come into adulthood than during an apocalypse. During a New York Comic Con panel for his monster flick from Michael Matthews, O’Brien said that his character’s environment adds a new element to the coming-of-age genre.
“He’s been so stunted from developing and of coming of age as he would in his adolescent years because of what’s been taking place,” O’Brien says of his Love and Monsters character Joel Dawson. “There’s so much left do discover in his life.”
O’Brien joined Matthews and fellow cast members Jessica Henwick, Michael Rooker and Ariana Greenblatt to tease the action comedy. Dan Ewing in ‘Love and Monsters.’
Dan Ewing makes his Hollywood debut in Paramount Pictures’ comedy-adventure Love and Monsters, which follows humans who were forced underground after giant creatures took control of the land.
Formerly known as Monster Problems, the Queensland-shot film directed by South African-born Michael Matthews stars Dylan O’Brien as Joel Dawson, who reconnects over the radio with his high school girlfriend Aimee (Jessica Henwick).
Aiming to rekindle their romance, he ventures out to find her, battling all the dangerous monsters that stand in his way.
Ewing plays Cap, a former naval officer who is giving Aimee and members of her colony sanctuary at sea. “My character has seen the brutal horrors of what these creatures are capable of and offers the colonists a real chance at survival,” the former Home and Away star tells If.
“Very Noah’s Ark. He also puts a great spanner in the works for Joel.

Love and Monsters, another would-be blockbuster that’s bypassing theaters for VOD, is arriving at your home quite soon, as evidenced by the release of the film’s first trailer.
If there’s one thing that the often-visited genre of post-apocalyptic sci-fi cinema needs, it’s a wholesome romance between two young star-crossed lovers. Someone at Paramount realized this, and, this past October, quickly went into development on the project in question, tapping headliners in Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner) and Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist).
Michael Matthews directed the picture, having come off his feature debut, the 2017 South African western-style thriller, Five Fingers for Merseilles. He worked off a screenplay by Brian Duffield (Insurgent) and Matthew Robinson (Dora and the Lost City of Gold), based on a story by Duffield.
With that set, check out the Love and Monsters trailer just below.

Paramount Pictures is dealing with its Monster Problems, moving the release of the coming-of-age tale starring Dylan O’Brien back by six weeks.
The pic about a young man living in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by monsters had been set for March 6 but now will unspool April 17. We hear the move was made because the mid-April date is a good fit ahead of the summer blitz.

Jessica Henwick (Iron Fist) will co-star in Monster Problems alongside Dylan O’Brien (The Maze Runner), as first reported by THR. O’Brien is set as the film's protagonist, with Henwick set to play the dream girl for whom he'll brave a global mutant apocalypse.
The film will be directed by Michael Matthews (Five Fingers for Marseilles), working off a screenplay by Matthew Robinson, updated from a previous screenplay by Brian Duffield.

Mary Poppins Returns truly made the impossible possible.
A new behind-the-scenes clip released by Disney shows the great lengths director Rob Marshall went through in order to make the movie as real as possible — including Emily Blunt disappearing into the bathtub!
In the movie, Mary Poppins is giving the Banks kids a bath when they slowly start vanishing under the mountain of bubbles. The nanny then looks straight into the camera and slides backwards into the tub — and then underwater! — for a fantasy sequence. And while the shot looks like it could be CGI, the behind-the-scenes video shows that Blunt,...

Thursday night, the 30th annual Palm Springs International Film Festival hosted another black tie, thousands of attendees for dinner and awards show at the all-star Film Awards Gala.

This year’s most buzz-worthy films and stars traveled to the desert to kick off this year’s award season in high style.
TV personality Mary Hart once again served as the evening's host, her 16th year in that position.
Honorees were presented with either the John Kennedy “The Entertainer” statue or a Chihuly Glass Sculpture.

Voting took place at my old elementary school this year, and the experience of walking through that building after so many years closely resembled the experience I had watching Rob Marshall’s Mary Poppins Returns. With chairs and desks much closer to the ground than I remember, many of the same faces on staff, and little changes here and there to the décor like the names underneath the appropriately amateurish artwork lining the hallways, I enjoyed seeing the old amongst the new, knowing that the students there now are probably having as much fun as I once did.
With little changes here and there, Mary Poppins Returns does a fair enough job making the classic’s formula its own. Though not one part of it surpasses the 1964 Julie Andrews film (which would certainly be no easy task), its electrifying song-and-dance numbers, a blend of tenderness and somberness from star Emily Blunt,...

Chicago – They did it. Walt Disney Studios took one of their most beloved live action/animated films and rebooted it for a new millennium. “Mary Poppins Returns” is a song-filled, emotional and magical celebration of all things Mary P, combining the elements that made it great the first time with the modern movie strengths of today.
Rating: 4.5/5.0
Credit goes first and foremost to veteran director Rob Marshall (“Chicago”). Given all the legacy he had to deal with, he chose to create his own version by not borrowing one familiar song (except for incidental background instrumentals) from the 1964 film and mixing the right chemistry of current performers and wily veterans to retell the story of Mary Poppins. Emily Blunt portrays the title nanny, and understands the mystery of the character by going back to the source storybooks (by author P.L. With the big year-end holidays just days away, many are rushing out of town to be with loved ones, which makes it a perfect time for the movies to ponder that age-old question, “Can you really go home again?”. In other words, can you recapture the wonder and general magic of our childhood years? The Disney Studios certainly hope that’s possible, for they’ve got a lot riding (financially and artistically) on a sequel to their founder’s last great box office triumph (certainly “Uncle” Walt’s biggest “mainly” live action hit). But wait, you may ask, didn’t that celebrated “man from Marceline Missouri” pass away in 1966? Exactly, and this classic hit theatres two years before that, even inspiring a “making of” docudrama five years ago, Saving Mr. Banks. So, can this icon, a different sort of soaring super-heroine, save filmgoers from the holiday flick doldrums (so many...

It’s no surprise that Mary Poppins Returns, an industrial-strength sugarplum, doesn’t live up to the 1964 original; how do you replace the immortal Julie Andrews as the London nanny who drops from the clouds to dispense tough love. Mary Poppins Returns can’t possibly be expected to transcend its historical foundation. It’s been over half a century since the Disney original seeped its way into the collective consciousness. Julie Andrews is all but synonymous with the stern, yet cheerful magical nanny. Songs like “Spoonful of Sugar,” “Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious,” and other Sherman Brothers’ creations are now musical standards. Hence, any long-in-the-making, Disney-stamped sequel will inevitably be forced to pay homage to the original and re-introduce the concept of Mary Poppins to a new generation. Mary Poppins Returns serves too many cultural and financial masters to be its own beast, so it’s forced to make space in a middle ground circumscribed by nostalgia.

‘Mary Poppins Returns’ Film Review: Emily Blunt, Lin-Manuel Miranda Languish in the Shadow of Giants
Once Disney decided to make a movie called “Mary Poppins Returns,” it automatically placed the film’s creators into something of a no-win situation: A sequel to the beloved, successful 1964 musical couldn’t stray too far from the previous movie lest it alienate fans, but for it to be too similar to its predecessor would call into question the point of making such a long-delayed follow-up in the first place.
It’s possible that there’s a filmmaker out there who could have threaded that particular needle in a way that would integrate the familiar into something new — the way J.J. Abrams did with the 2009 “Star Trek” reboot, for instance — but director Rob Marshall and screenwriter David Magee (“Life of Pi”) have taken the lane of least resistance and given us a clone that’s practically “Poppins” (1964) in every way.

A listless Sunday afternoon of a movie that bursts with forced whimsy and synthetic optimism from the first notes of “(Underneath the) Lovely London Sky” to the last twinkles of “Nowhere to Go but Up” (an admirably bold choice of song title for any film’s big closing number), “Mary Poppins Returns” isn’t dishonest so much as it’s out of its time, like a useless clock that’s happy to be five minutes off. In fact, that analogy is something of a plot point in this long-awaited Disney sequel, which — after its daytime lullaby of an opening number — begins with the grizzled Admiral Boom (David Warner) complaining that Big Ben is running a few ticks ahead of schedule. Of course, the truth of the matter is that the crotchety old naval vet is actually lagging behind, but this is a film that would rather slow down the rest...

One performance can often make or break a movie, but the collective talents of the right ensemble can transform what looks good on paper into something truly special on the big screen. The SAG Awards have been honoring acting ensembles for 25 years, first TV shows and then quickly broadening to include films. This year, there are a multitude of ensembles to choose from. Along with such Oscar frontrunners as “A Star Is Born,” “Vice” and “Roma,” there are some unique ensembles that could find themselves in the running.
