Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio) said he had been wrong to say, “Lord help us,” if we support Donald Trump in 2016.
Vance said this while discussing his opinion about Trump’s New York hush money trial with CNN host Dana Bash.
Vance was one of many Republicans who visited the hush money trial last week.
“I want to ask about what we saw this past week, and it’s gonna continue this week – the trial in New York – adult film actress Stormy Daniels testified about her allegation of the sexual encounter with Donald Trump,” Bash told the Ohio senator. “Now, after the Access Hollywood tape in 2016, you tweeted: ‘fellow Christians, everyone is watching us. When we apologize for this man, lord help us,'” she added.
Bash reminded him that Vance has “since deleted that tweet” about the former president.
“Do you still feel that way about Donald Trump’s sexual indiscretions?...

Missed Thursday’s late-night monologues? We’ve got you covered with our round-up of the night’s best laughs from across the dial.
They’re Not Booing, They’re Saying “Boo-bert”
Late night hosts, pesky hunters of hypocrisy that they are, were all over the parade of supposed “family values” Republicans flocking to Donald Trump’s trial concerning that time he committed financial fraud to cover up hush money payments to the adult film actress he slept with while his third wife recovered from childbirth. Noting how virulent anti-porn moral scolds like House Speaker Mike Johnson and Congressman Jd Vance have come rushing to give moral support to their chosen leader in his hour of humiliating need, said hosts roasted the GOP for so openly demonstrating that their only actual value is power.

House Speaker Mike Johnson made headlines on Tuesday when he attended former President Donald Trump’s criminal trial in New York. In doing so, he became the highest-ranking Republican official to offer support to Trump and endorse his criticisms of the U.S. justice system.
Johnson is the most recent GOP figure to visit the courtroom as he faces accusations that he falsified business records to conceal hush money payments directed to adult film star Stormy Daniels before the 2016 presidential election. Alongside Trump at the courthouse were Gov. Doug Burgum (R-North Dakota), who has been mentioned as a potential running mate for Trump in the 2024 election, as well as Rep. Byron Donalds (R-Florida.) and Rep. Cory Mills (R-Florida.).
Sen. J.D. Vance (R-Ohio), another potential vice presidential candidate, along with Sens. Tommy Tuberville (R-Alabama) and Rick Scott (R-Florida), had previously appeared at the trial to show their support for Trump.

Donald Trump has repeatedly referred to his criminal hush-money trial as a “witch hunt” and a “show trial,” and if the former president wanted to make a spectacle of the court’s proceeding, he now has quite the supporting cast.
In the last several days of courtroom drama, Trump has been accompanied by an entourage of prominent Republican lawmakers eager to be seen offering their public support to the indicted former president. Not only is their presence an act of theatrical solidarity, they have been acting as mouthpieces for Trump,...

Updated: House Speaker Mike Johnson is the latest figure to lend his support to Donald Trump and his claim that the New York hush money trial is a “sham.”
Johnson was in the background as Trump made his regular morning statement to the press in the hallway just outside the courtroom, and the speaker nodded at the former president as he made his way in.
Also joining Trump were other supporters, including Vivek Ramaswamy, Rep. Byron Donalds (R-fl) and North Dakota Governor Doug Burgum. Ramaswamy and Burgum are among a number of vice presidential contenders to visit the courthouse to show their fealty to Trump, on trial for allegedly falsifying business records to cover up a hush money payment to porn star Stormy Daniels.

Ron Howard has been part of our collective consciousness for as long as I can remember. Or at least he looms large in mine. Born in 1954, he was on many of the TV series I grew up watching and had his own starring role on “The Andy Griffith Show” by 1960. And his father had the idea that little “Ronny Howard” should play a good kid, not the wise-guy type popular in those “Dennis the Menace” years. He’d be nice. It stuck. He’s been known as “nice” ever since.
That made him much too easy to dismiss. However prominent he was — as a principal star of “American Graffiti” in 1973, top-billed “Happy Days” actor the next year and then as a director debuting with “Night Shift” in 1977 — we could take him lightly. By then I was reviewing films, and I overlooked him to a fault. I didn’t even give...

The epicenter for the now weekslong protest movement is Columbia University, where on Tuesday students occupied Hamilton Hall before the NYPD forcibly removed and arrested them. J.D. Trump-backed Bernie Moreno won Ohio’s Republican US Senate primary on Tuesday, according to the Associated Press.
Moreno defeated state Senator Matt Dolan, a critic of the former president, and Secretary of State Frank Larose; he will now go head-to-head against the Democratic incumbent, Senator Sherrod Brown.
The victory for the wealthy former car dealer, who has never held elected office, comes as the former president’s grip on the Senate tightens. Brown is one of the two Democrats (the other is Montana Democrat Jon Tester) running for reelection in red states.

Glenn Close’s career brought her an eighth Oscar nomination in the supporting actress category for her role as Mamaw, the chain-smoking, foul-mouthed, “Terminator” franchise fan and tough-love proponent who takes her struggling grandson under her wing in Ron Howard’s “Hillbilly Elegy.”
Some critics thought Close was the saving grace of the film based on J.D. Vance’s memoir that focuses on an Appalachian family who have fallen on hard times when their once-thriving steel mill town in Ohio is riddled by poverty, addiction, domestic abuse and dead-end jobs.
Close holds the title of the most Oscar losses for an actress, in a tie with the late Peter O’Toole’s losing streak. Olivia Colman‘s performance as ditzy Queen Anne in “The Favourite” allowed her to be crowned with the Best Actress title over Close’s work in 2018’s “The Wife.”

Odesa, Ukraine — The American Century is ending, with external adversaries outmaneuvering the United States in critical strategic contests worldwide, while internal extremists destroy American leadership.
Whether one believes — as American officials say they do — that the purpose of U.S. power is to enforce a “rules-based” liberal international order and defend human rights, or whether one believes — as Russian President Vladimir Putin and his friends say they do — that the U.S. uses its espoused ideals as cover for rapacious empire-building, it’s clear Washington is capable of doing neither effectively.

The news of the death of Russian opposition figure Alexei Navalny very quickly put a focus on Tucker Carlson, the right-wing talk host who recently trekked to Moscow to interview Vladimir Putin.
Carlson told the Daily Mail today that “it’s horrifying what happened to Navalny. The whole thing is barbaric and awful. No decent person would defend it.”
In the wake of reports of Navalny’s death, Carlson faced another round of backlash after interviewing Putin last week and for subsequent social media posts. In them, Carlson trumpeted a Moscow subway station and a grocery store.
Former congresswoman Liz Cheney wrote on X/Twitter earlier today, “This is what Putin’s Russia is, Tucker Carlson. And you are Putin’s useful idiot. Same with you J.D. Vance and other Putin-wing Republicans who are working to defeat Ukraine in its struggle for freedom.”
Carlson posted his interview with Putin on X/Twitter on Feb.

House Republican leader, Rep. Elise Stefanik (R-New York), rescinded her endorsement from Craig Riedel, a House of GOP candidate, due to the criticisms he made against former President Donald Trump.
On January 4, Stefanik announced on X that she would no longer endorse Riedel.
“Earlier this week, I informed Craig Riedel (Ohio-9) that I will be withdrawing my endorsement,” she wrote. “I was very disappointed in his inappropriate comments regarding President Trump.”
“As we begin 2024, my focus is on ensuring we nominate the strongest candidates on the ballot who are committed to electing President Trump this November and expanding our House GOP Majority,” Stefanik declared.
Riedel is a GOP former state representative running for Congress.
He made it clear in an audio recording that he would not endorse Trump and noted that his habit of insulting others does not seem presidential.

Former President Donald Trump faced renewed criticism for his controversial comments about undocumented immigrants, where he suggested that they were “poisoning the blood of our country.”
Despite comparisons drawn to Adolf Hitler’s language, Trump adamantly denied that he ever read Hitler’s autobiography, Mein Kampf, and defended his remarks.
In a chapter of Hitler’s Mein Kampf, “Race and People,” he wrote, “All the great civilizations of the past became decadent because the originally creative race died out, as a result of contamination of the blood.”

In a speech he gave in Iowa, Trump reiterated his belief that undocumented immigrants from Africa, Asia and South America were “destroying the blood of our country.”

MSNBC’s Joy Reid took on two of Donald Trump’s most faithful scions Thursday in a segment for “The ReidOut,” saying threatening letters that Stephen Miller and J.D. Vance wrote to universities reflect an emboldened approach after the Supreme Court’s ruling that effectively struck down affirmative action in colleges.
Reid, in a conversation with activist and former president/director-counsel of the NAACP Legal Defense Fund Sherrilyn Ifill, drew a line connecting the language of the Supreme Court’s majority decision and the talking points of the late conservative radio talk-show host Rush Limbaugh.
Reid then pointed to what she called a direct outcome — letters that Miller, Trump’s former senior White House adviser, and Vance, the U.S. senator from Ohio who was endorsed by Trump, sent to law schools and top universities threatening them with repercussions if they attempted to subvert the ruling.

Ohio Senator J.D. Vance has vowed to “grind [the Justice Department] to a halt” in response to the indictment of Donald Trump on charges related to his treatment of classified documents after leaving office.
Trump was arrested and arraigned in Miami on Tuesday. Vance posted a video from the steps of the Capitol earlier in the day declaring that he “will be holding all Department of Justice nominees … I think that we have to grind this department to a halt until [Attorney General] Merrick Garland promises to do his job and stop going after his political opponents.

For a second time this year, Donald Trump is facing criminal charges. The former president is reportedly being slapped with a seven-count federal indictment amid an investigation into his unauthorized hoarding of classified documents after leaving office.
A source with knowledge of the matter previously told Rolling Stone that the charges include items related to possession of documents, obstruction, and false statements. Republican lawmakers, including Florida Gov. Ron DeSantis, rallied around Trump, denouncing the indictment.

House Speaker Kevin McCarthy is making the rounds touting his debt ceiling agreement with the Biden administration, but the die-hard Trump wing of the party is very unhappy with the deal. Even though the final text of the agreement has yet to be released, GOP Rep. Chip Roy called the deal a “turd sandwich.”
1st – the leadership playbook is to line up cheerleading on phone calls to demonstrate “unity.” 2nd, not 95% – I know of more no’s than that already. 3rd – they haven’t been educated yet on what a turd-sandwich this “deal” is.

The world of sports, Hollywood and politics came together online today to mourn the passing of Jim Brown, who made an outsized impact in all of those sectors.
Even though his last NFL game was more than 50 years ago, and his last film more than eight years ago, Brown still loomed large in the minds of those politicians, athletes and organizations who marveled at his skills in multiple venues.
Some of the online reactions so far:
I was too young to remember Jim Brown’s playing days, but I knew his legacy. One of the greatest football players ever, he was also an actor and activist – speaking out on civil rights, and pushing other Black athletes to do the same. Our thoughts are with Jim’s wife Monique, his…

The sudden ouster of Tucker Carlson from his primetime perch at Fox News is drawing a flood of concern and complaint from Maga world and other conservative voices, both mainstream and extreme.
Former president Donald Trump said he was “shocked” and that Carlson was “a very good person, a very good man and very talented” in reaction to Monday’s news. He added, “I don’t know if it was voluntary or was it somebody fired, but I think Tucker has been terrific. Especially over the last year or so he’s terrific to me.

J.D. Vance, the ‘hillbilly’ venture capitalist and now Republican Senator from Ohio, frequently rails against the menace of Big Tech and its alleged bias against conservatives. Less frequent are his discussions about his investments in smaller tech firms — and how his calls to hobble giants such as YouTube could boost companies like Rumble, in which Vance has boasted he was the “first outside investor.”

Hong Chau — the Oscar-nominated actor, who’s appeared in “The Whale,” “The Menu,” and “Downsizing” — is an interesting element on Netflix’s new series “The Night Agent,” and a revealing one. To cast Chau, a gifted and hardworking performer who’s been elevating projects for years, is to announce a certain ambition. Here, she’s playing the determined White House Chief of Staff, a figure close to the heart of various intrigues on a political thriller with schlock in its DNA. And yet she does it so elegantly, so excellently that she elevates the whole thing.
So it is with “The Night Agent,” created by Shawn Ryan of “The Shield,” and based on a novel by Matthew Quirk. Here, Gabriel Basso (who played the future U.S. Senator J.D. Vance in the film “Hillbilly Elegy”) stars as Peter Sutherland, whose employment at the FBI is at such a low level that...

Ron DeSantis has all but said he’s running for the Republican nomination for president in 2024. The Washington Post reported on Thursday that he actually has said it, just not publicly.
The Florida governor is heading to Davenport, Iowa, on Friday, which is just as strong of an indication he intends to run as the Post‘s report. He’ll head to Nevada on Saturday, where already-declared candidate Nikki Haley just held a town hall. DeSantis traveled beyond Florida’s borders ahead of last year’s midterms, as well, rallying...

Conservatives are fantasizing about taking their shot at bringing down the reported Chinese Spy Balloon floating over the Midwest. We cannot stress it enough: That Is A Bad Idea.
The balloon is located at an altitude of about 66,000 feet (12.5 miles), high above the airspace where commercial airliners typically fly. It is way, way, way above the altitude where a bullet could reach it. The Department of Defense has indicated that while taking military-based action to shoot down the balloon is being considered, the concern of potential harm to civilians by...

“Hillbilly Elegy” director Ron Howard admits he was “surprised” by J.D. Vance’s embrace of Donald Trump and the GOP’s conservative ideology during his recent successful campaign for Ohio senator.
“To be honest, I was surprised,” Howard told Variety at the Academy’s Governors Awards Saturday in Los Angeles. “When I was getting to know J.D., we didn’t talk politics because I wasn’t interested in that about his life. I was interested in his childhood and navigating the particulars of his family and his culture so that’s what we focused on in our conversation. To me, he struck me as a very moderate center-right kind of guy.”
Howard directed the film adaptation of Vance’s bestselling memoir “Hillbilly Elegy: A Memoir of a Family and Culture in Crisis,” released as a Netflix film in 2020. Vance’s book chronicled his family’s struggles with poverty and...

Tucker Carlson has a type. He likes hardline nationalists who can cosplay anti-elitism while pretending they didn’t go to an Ivy, or have an heiress mother, or have the richest people in the country funding their campaign. He likes the kind of candidate who blends hateful nativism and a fear of the impending collapse of Western Civilization, with mockery of blue-haired, cat-owning coastal liberals.
Turns out Tucker’s type may not be super electable.
As Republicans scramble to find an explanation for their poor midterm showing, finger pointing abounds.

Incumbent Senator Mark Kelly has defeated far-right Republican challenger Blake Masters, AP reports, denying conservatives a seat they sunk millions into and dealing yet another blow to former President Donald Trump’s endorsement power. Kelly’s win puts Democrats just one victory away from sealing control of the chamber and with Vice President Kamala Harris’ tie-breaking vote, their party can retain Senate control by cinching either the Nevada race or next month’s Georgia runoff.

Former President Donald Trump has finally revealed Melania Trump‘s reaction when reports of him paying prostitutes in Russia to urinate on a hotel bed were released.
“I know that’s not your thing,” Melania said when the former president brought up the topic while speaking at a rally for Ohio Senate candidate Jd Vance.

The “what if?” game has always fascinated me: What if Donald Trump had been cast in Shark Tank rather than The Apprentice (it was Mark Burnett’s call)? He likely would have been broke rather than president.
I cite this to remind readers that Hollywood plays a role in our politics as well as in our pop culture, and hence the town would do well to heed the cultural shift reflected in this week’s election results. The audience is changing — will movies and TV change accordingly?

It was supposed to be a red wave that former President Donald Trump could triumphantly ride to the Republican nomination as he prepares to launch another White House run.
Instead, Tuesday night’s disappointing results for the GOP are raising new questions about Trump’s appeal and the future of a party that has fully embraced him, seemingly at its peril, while at the same time giving new momentum to his most potent potential rival.
Indeed, some allies were calling on Trump to delay his planned announcement next week, saying the party’s full focus needs to be on Georgia, where Trump-backed football great Herschel Walker’s effort to unseat Democratic Sen. Raphael Warnock is headed to a runoff that could determine control of the Senate once again.

The Republican Party “shit the bed so bad” on Tuesday night.
That’s how one longtime GOP strategist who worked on several high-profile 2022 races put it just hours after midnight. The operative wasn’t alone in his misery: A total of 16 Republican strategists, grassroots activists, Donald Trump confidants, and elected officials began venting to Rolling Stone Tuesday night (some completely unprompted) about the party’s disappointment midterm results. The general sentiment: The GOP had historically botched the midterms, had good reason to panic, and should feel humiliated.

Update [5:12 pm Et]: Story now has final Nielsen numbers:
We’re still waiting on a whole bunch of midterm results, but we know who won Election Night in TV ratings. Tuesday was a Red Wave (of sorts) for the conservative-leaning Fox News Channel, which also claimed first place outright in 2020 and 2018.
Fox News drew an average of 7.42 million total viewers last night across primetime (8 p.m. to 11 p.m.), according to final Nielsen numbers, more than doubling its closest competitor, ABC (a rounded 3.31 million). MSNBC was third (3.21 million) and NBC proper (3.11 million) was fourth. CNN was a distant fifth place with 2.61 million total viewers; CBS brought up the rear with 2.56 million.
In the main news demo of adults 25-54, Fox News Channel was again No. 1, averaging a rounded 1.88. CNN attracted enough viewers in that age range (1.059 million) to rank second, coming in a mere 1,000 viewers ahead of third-place NBC. In fourth was ABC,...

Hillbilly Elegy author J.D. Vance defeated Democratic U.S. Rep. Tim Ryan for an open U.S. Senate seat in Ohio on Tuesday in a blow to Democrats who viewed it as one of their best chances nationally to flip a seat.
Vance, 38, a venture capitalist and newcomer to politics, benefited from a last-minute push by Donald Trump. The former Republican president had endorsed Vance in a crowded, ugly Republican primary — despite Vance having once declared himself a “never-Trumper” — and then rallied for him twice, most recently on election eve.
Vance and Trump successfully linked Ryan to the national economic climate he blamed on President Joe Biden, while Ryan failed to make stick his narrative that Vance’s Ivy League education and time in the San Francisco tech industry meant he was out of touch with Ohio values.
