I guess these days everyone is quite familiar with the social media term “toxic couple.” It is all about two people who shouldn’t be together but still end up being together and instead parting ways. In such a case, either one of them or both are always doing things behind their partner’s back. And when they should just walk away, they cling to their toxic partner for reasons scientists are still exploring. Jokes aside, it seems that these couples are stuck in a cycle of trauma from which they can’t walk away. Take Nata and Alberto, for example, in the Netflix series Raising Voices. Nata knows deep down that Alberto isn’t good for her, but she keeps giving him second chances, forgiving him over and over again. And Alberto? Well, he’s got this habit of saying sorry and treating Nata like a princess every now and then,...

Why are men’s abuse, infidelity, and molestation often normalized? It’s as if they are just children who don’t have a clue that they shouldn’t be doing these things, and we as women have to live with this and learn how to move past the trauma so that we don’t hurt men’s egos or suffer severe consequences if we raise our voices against such behavior. The new Netflix series “Raising Voices” dives into the #MeToo culture and the power of social media in helping girls come forward about the traumas they experience. If they can’t confront their molester face-to-face, perhaps sharing their experiences on social media can make more people stand by them. But it’s not that easy, is it? This series tells the stories of Alma (Nicole Wallace), Greta (Clara Galle), Berta (Teresa de Mera), Nata (Aicha Villaverde), and other girls who...

There’s a saying that teachers are our mentors and guides in life who teach us right from wrong and help us grow. After our parents, teachers play a crucial role in shaping our lives. But what if these teachers are not as good as they seem? What if they hide their true nature behind a mask, pretending to be supportive while disguising their intentions? This can be very confusing for young minds who rely on these very teachers to distinguish between right and wrong because they believe in them. This is dangerous because these teachers often take advantage of this trust to exploit innocent students. In the Netflix series Raising Voices, a history teacher named Juan Lopez Sanchez has a history of abusing students, but no one spoke up against him for a long time. Alma, one of his students, finally found the courage to stand up to him...

What if you told someone one of your deepest, darkest secrets—the secret you’ve been hiding for so long because you’re scared that if you reveal it, people might judge you? They might start looking at you differently or call you a liar, completely dismissing your feelings and emotions. You end up questioning why you bothered to come forward with it. Why did you make the mistake of trusting others? That’s exactly what happened to Berta in the Netflix Spanish series Raising Voices. Coming out with the truth takes courage, and when it all goes to waste, it’s the most horrifying thing ever. Berta faced those consequences when she finally trusted Alma with her secret. The reason she left her school was that the history teacher had been molesting her, and she could not take a stand against it. What happened to Berta in the end?...

Through the powerful portrayal of each character, this series vividly shows us what it’s like to live in a world where people have forgotten what safety feels like. When these men fail to provide a safe space, what can we expect from others? Let’s familiarize ourselves with these characters to truly understand each character’s struggles and perspectives. They make us question the very fabric of our society and challenge us to demand better and stand against our abusers by raising our voices.

When I started watching Raising Voices, I had no idea what it was going to be about. However, a little into the first episode, I was reminded of the American series Grand Army. Also a Netflix original, Grand Army, tells the story of teenagers in a very similar manner to the Spanish-language adaptation, but in a more graphic manner. Raising Voices, tells the story of Alma, a 17-year-old girl who is struggling with teenhood until one day, her life completely changes. Raising Voices is a thought-provoking TV series that allows young audiences to answer the question, “What is assault?” Through four leading characters, the series explores the many different ways young girls are treated and how they can face these terrible challenges. Many times, girls are forced to believe that they’re the problem, and they put themselves in situations where they get assaulted. The series ethically explores these thoughts...

Raising Voices is a Spanish-language Netflix original adapted from a novel that is a coming-of-age story that consists of all your usual teenage-drama tropes but at the same time stands out from the crowd as a thought-provoking piece of media. It’s a show that predominantly tells the story of Alma, a girl who is different from the rest of her classmates and is finding it hard to be a regular 17-year-old. Her life is completely turned upside down when she learns that one of her close friends was assaulted at her school. However, the story doesn’t simply focus on Alma; we have three more protagonists: Berta, Greta, and Nata. Greta is Alma’s childhood best friend, while Nata is a newer friend from school. Berta, on the other hand, used to be a good friend of Alma’s until she went through some trouble at school and left,...

Raising Voices is a Spanish-language Netflix series about a rebellious girl named Alma. The series begins at its climax when Alma puts up a banner on the school gates with the words, “Be warned, this school is hiding a rapist.” Though the show is primarily Alma’s story, it actually gives us insight into a few other girls in her life. Berta, Nata, and Greta are each facing terrifying challenges in their school lives, and Raising Voices ties all of their stories together through Alma, their unhinged friend. The show attempts to depict problematic youth culture and to show young girls that they should be able to speak up when something terrible has happened to them. It places heavy emphasis on the fact that young girls blame themselves for anything that’s happened to them out of fear of judgment.

To the majority of the women of this generation, Gal Gadot represents Wonder Woman more than anything else. The actress who first debuted as a superhero in 2016 then fell out with DC when their business flourished. But the saga that carried Gadot from relative anonymity to all-encompassing fame is a wholesome and inspiring one.

Now that the actress has secured her position in the industry, Gal Gadot feels a call to devote her attention to both halves that make her whole — her family and her career.

David Schickele’s Bushman opens with Gabriel (Paul Eyam Nzie Okpokam), a young Nigerian immigrant, walking down a San Francisco highway and conspicuously balancing a pair of shoes on his head while trying to thumb a ride. The image announces the film’s neorealist intentions, alluding to postwar Italian films’ on-location, street-oriented settings, and even puns on the title of Vittorio De Sica’s Shoeshine. Which isn’t to say that Bushman intends to turn neorealism on its head exactly. Rather, it aims to consider how the contexts the bred neorealism might relate to the late-1960s, when the United States was at war in Vietnam and Nigeria was in year two of a civil war following its decolonization in 1960.
After a playful opening sequence in which Gabriel is picked up by a motorcyclist (Mike Slyre) who looks as though he just stepped off the set of Easy Rider, the...

In Greek mythology, cuckoo birds were sacred creatures to the goddess Hera. Elsewhere, like in Europe and the United States, the cuckoo is often associated with the clock that imitates its birdsong, Coca Puffs, or as the name of origin for the words "cuck" and "cuckoldry," as the bird leaves its eggs in other nests and tricks other birds into raising its young (get it?). For Tilman Singer's new horror film, "Cuckoo" is a bonkers, bloody rollercoaster of terrorizing sound design and dynamic performances that feels like it could fall off the rails at any moment.
Fortunately, "Cuckoo" commits to its strange, sinister logic with fearlessness and refuses to play into formulaic movie logic while dangling familiar tropes like a hunter baiting prey, making this screeching ride of repulsive body horror wanting another go around. Admittedly, it might be hard to make sense of how some of the first-act...

Picture the scene — an idyllic rural resort in the German Alps, with trees as far as the eye can see and a bespectacled Dan Stevens in tow. Sounds like the stuff of dreams, right? Well, if the first trailer for Hunter Schafer-starring horror Cuckoo – from Luz director Tilman Singer – is anything to go by, it's more like the stuff of nightmares. Check it out below:
Anybody else's heart pounding after that? Sheesh! Right from the all-too-Shining opening shots of a car wending its way through the countryside, it's abundantly clear that this is no cosy travelogue about sweet birds and European natural wonder. And the shrieks among the trees, ominous shots of taxidermy bears, and Dan Stevens' accented, low-key menacing "How would you like to come work for me at the resort?" here certainly don't suggest a five-star TripAdvisor review is on its way any time soon. 2024 is shaping up to be a good year for horror, and that's exciting. Horror remains one of the most dependable genres — if there's a new horror movie, audiences will likely turn out to see it. Hell, these days a horror movie doesn't even need to have good reviews to bolster its box office returns: people just want to go see a scary movie. Which brings us to "Cuckoo," a new horror film written and directed by Tilman Singer, who helmed the very strange 2018 German horror pic "Luz."
"Cuckoo" features "Euphoria" star Hunter Schafer as Gretchen, a teen sent to live with her father in the German Alps. Sounds fun and picturesque, right? Wrong! There are scary things afoot. The film premiered at the Berlin film festival Berlinale this year, where it garnered mixed-to-positive reviews, many of which point out how weird the movie is. It currently sits at 76% on Rotten Tomatoes.

“Euphoria” breakout Hunter Schafer is playing yet another teen trying to outrun her familial drama, except this time, it’s a surreal matter of life or death. Schafer leads “Cuckoo,” written and directed by “Luz” filmmaker Tilman Singer.
Six years after Singer’s 2018 feature debut, “Cuckoo” centers on 17-year-old Gretchen (Schafer) who is forced to leave her American home to live with her father (Márton Csókás) in a resort in the German Alps with his new wife (Jessica Henwick) and family. Yet it’s her father’s boss Mr. Konig (Dan Stevens) and his obsession with Gretchen’s mute half-sister Alma (Mila Lieu) that unlocks a larger, more sinister presence at the resort. Gretchen becomes haunted by strange noises and bloody visions until she discovers a shocking secret that also concerns her own family. Jan Bluthardt and Greta Fernandez also star in the horror film.
