The Tribeca Film Festival is always worthwhile for character-driven humanist dramas that get lifted from well-known actors, and the new Latinx-centered family drama, “Allswell In New York,” which debuted at Tribeca last year, looks like it fits the bill.
Starring Elizabeth Rodriguez from “Orange Is the New Black” and “Logan,” “The Bear” breakout star Liza Colon-Zayas, Daphne Rubin-Vega, Felix Solis, Max Casella, Michael Rispoli, Shyrley Rodriguez, MacKenzie Lansing, J.

“Allswell” is one of those rare movies that feels less like a cinematic presentation and more like a personal invitation into someone’s home. There’s no pageantry, no fuss; they didn’t even clean the place up for you. You’re going to get to know everyone better, they’re not going to hide their unflattering sides, and by the end you’ll feel peaceful and welcome.
Directed by Ben Snyder, it’s the story of two sisters, Daisy and Ida, and their sister-in-law Serene (Daphne Rubin-Vega). Daisy, about to adopt a child from a young mother who advertised on Craigslist, co-owns a restaurant with no small amount of drama attached. Clinic counselor Ida reconnects with their troubled and dying brother Desmond, and Serene is losing patience with her adult daughter, Connie, who’s working as an erotic model.

Family members come together in the wake of trauma, only to dredge up past wounds as they eventually hope to start fresh. It’s a well-worn trope that’s an indie-film staple because it relies on small casts and limited locations. Such is the case with Ben Snyder’s “Allswell,” in which three sisters (related through blood or marriage) come together when a family member is in trouble. Soon, the familiar is mired in unrealized character arcs, clunky lines, and
Sisters Daisy (Elizabeth Rodriguez) and Ida (Liza Colón-Zayas), along with their sister-in-law Serene (Daphne Rubin-Vega) all have their own troubles. After years of struggling with IVF, Daisy hopes her baby dreams will come true after taking in a pregnant girl named Nina (Mackenzie Lansing) she met on Craigslist. Ida, the fixer of the family, puts her friends first at the expense of her relationship with partner Ray (Michael Rispoli). Serene,...

"The only time I feel good is when I'm behind the wheels." 1091 Pictures has released an official US trailer for an indie drama titled Wheels, marking the feature directorial debut of Brooklyn-based filmmaker Paul Starkman. The project was successfully funded on Kickstater back in 2016, then originally premiered at the Woodstock Film Festival in 2018, and also played at the Kansas City FilmFest last year. It will finally be available to watch on VOD next month. Not to be confused with the 2014 indie film also titled Wheels, this Wheels is about a young DJ who confronts his family struggles in the streets of Brooklyn. Comedian / rapper Arnstar stars as Max, who dreams of a better future as a DJ. Also starring Shyrley Rodriguez, Joshua Boone, Ioan Delice, Al Thompson, J. Alphonse Nicholson, Lee Quinones, and Dorothi Fox as Grandma. The logo & title is a bit bland, but otherwise this looks good. Might...

"We did it. We made two miserable people happy!" Netflix has debuted the first official trailer for a new romantic comedy titled Set It Up, arriving in the middle of June to liven up your summer days. Set It Up is the feature directorial debut of TV director/editor Claire Scanlon, and the story follows two assistants for executives in New York City, who try to set up their bosses to fall in love. As usual, not only does comedy ensue, but all kinds of romantic sparks fly and awkward things happen. Zoey Deutch and Glen Powell star, with Lucy Liu and Taye Diggs, as well as Noah Robbins, Jon Rudnitsky, Tituss Burgess, Pete Davidson, Shyrley Rodriguez, and Meredith Hagner. This looks expectedly cute and mildly amusing. Here's the official trailer (+ poster) for Claire Scanlon's Set It Up, direct from Netflix's YouTube: New York assistants, Harper (Zoey Deutsch) and...
