Assyouti is a screenwriter, director, producer. He established Assyouti Productions in Cairo in 2017. His academic background is in film, literature and philosophy. For many years he worked as documentary filmmaker, lecturer on film studies and film critic. In 1992 and 1993 was assistant director to Mohamed Khan in two feature films Mr. Karate & Youm har giddan (A Very Hot Day). Between 1994 to 2007 was film critic at Al-Ahram Weekly newspaper. In 2000 wrote "Glass Splinter Realism" an MA dissertation on Michelangelo Antonioni & Italo Calvino at the Literature Department of the American University in Cairo (AUC). In 2004 co-taught film directing with late director Osama Fawzi at Galal Studio Academy. Between 2000 and 2008 was affiliate professor of film studies at the American University in Cairo (AUC), teaching 6 courses each year, on filmmaking, film history, film theory and world cinema. Between 2008 and 2010 was director and line producer of 13 documentaries (26 or 52 minutes) for Al-Jazeera Documentary Channel, filmed in Ghana, Malaysia and Singapore. In 2014 wrote "Foul or Free Play: Freedom as A Process Restoring Self-Identity in Hegel's Absolute Idealism" an MA dissertation in philosophy at King's College London (KCL). In 2015 at EGS attended seminars with Terrence Malick, Wim Wenders, Jean-Luc Nancy and others. In 2016, produced and directed 1÷2 and Trahison, two short films, in Geneva. In May 2023 finished a PhD in philosophy with the dissertation "Hegels die Sache selbst" on Hegel's dialectics of freedom at the European Graduate School (EGS) under supervision of Mladen Dolar and with readers Slavoj Zizek and Alenka Zupancic. Since 2015, writing, directing, producing through Assyouti Productions, Cairo, the feature crime thriller Day of Friday the Animal.
