Rian Johnson's Benoit Blanc detective series continues to be one of the hottest tickets for working actors, as proven by the most recent bit of casting news for the follow-up to "Glass Onion." According to Deadline, "Challengers" and "La Chimera" star Josh O'Connor will appear in the upcoming mystery movie, which we recently learned will feature the excellent title "Wake Up Dead Man." Alongside O'Connor, "Civil War" and "Priscilla" breakout star Cailee Spaeny is also set to appear. As of publication time, we don't know yet whether they'll play murder victims, suspects, or some other role in Johnson's next whodunnit.
Aside from star Daniel Craig, Spaeny and O'Connor are the first two actors to be announced as part of the project, and they're a pretty buzzy duo to kick things off. British actor O'Connor had already earned accolades for (among other projects) his turns on royal drama "The Crown...

When the original Knives Out movie was released by Lionsgate in 2019, the whodunnit starring Daniel Craig as the southern P.E. Benoit Blanc, was either doomed to fail or become a smashing success. The latter happened, as the ensemble cast full of big names made Knives Out one of the best films of the year, ending up with numerous accolades and nominations, with many going so far as to claim that it had revived the whodunnit genre. The sequel, Glass Onion, was also well-received, but more because of its political and social messages than for the plot, which was more or less feeble and unworthy of the original. But, what is important is that Glass Onion also featured an ensemble cast, and it seems that the upcoming third movie, Wake Up Dead Man, will also follow in these footsteps.

Both the knives and casting notices are out!
The first two cast members to join ‘Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery’ have been announced: two on-the-rise stars Cailee Spaeny and Josh O’Connor. The 25-year-old Spaeny is coming off of Sofia Coppola’s “Priscilla,” which earned her a Golden Globe award and the Volpi Cup for Best Actress at last year’s Venice Film Festival, and a terrific turn in one of this spring’s most talked-about films, Alex Garland’s “Civil War.” She’ll also be seen in this August’s “Alien: Romulus.” The British 34-year-old O’Connor was seen in two well-regarded movies this spring, Luca Guadagnino’s “Challengers” and Alice Rohrwacher’s “La Chimera.”
The two will, of course, join Daniel Craig, returning as the “gentleman sleuth” Benoit Blanc. Writer-director Rian Johnson announced on social media that the movie is about to go into production, so...

Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny have joined Daniel Craig in the ensemble for Rian Johnson’s next Knives Out film, Wake Up Dead Man.
Considering the exorbitant amount that Netflix paid Rian Johnson to make two Knives Out sequels, it figures that we have to see at least some of that reported $400m on the screen. That was certainly true in 2022’s Glass Onion: A Knives Out Mystery which boasted one of that year’s most stacked ensemble casts. As the third film in the series, Wake Up Dead Man, moves towards production, we’re already looking forward to a string of high-profile names joining the project.
According to What’s On Netflix, we already have our first two names. Josh O’Connor and Cailee Spaeny have joined the cast for the upcoming film. O’Connor is one of the stars of Luca Guadagnino’s Challengers, not to mention portraying Prince Charles in The Crown.

Last week, writer and director Rian Johnson confirmed on X, formerly Twitter, that Craig would be reprising his role as Benoit Blanc in the next ensemble murder mystery film. In a 45-second video teaser video, he also revealed the sequel’s title as Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery.
“The next Benoit Blanc mystery, the follow-up to Knives Out and Glass Onion, is called Wake Up Dead Man,” the filmmaker wrote in the post’s caption on Friday.
Netflix also confirmed Craig’s return and the sequel title on its Tudum site following Johnson’s post.
“That’s right, Daniel Craig is back as the suave Southern investigator in Wake Up Dead Man: A Knives Out Mystery, a new installment of the whodunnit franchise written and directed by Rian Johnson.

Update: Well, that didn’t take long. In the few days since Rian Johnson announced he was making a third Knives Out movie, Wake Up Dead Man, two cast members have already been announced – and they’re buzzy. Fresh off of his role in Challengers, Josh O’Connor jumps into the latest whodunit, along with Priscilla, Civil War and Alien: Romulus star Cailee Spaeny. Of course, they’re just the first two in what’s bound to be another star-studded cast. Expect the rest of the cast to be revealed soon, as pretty much everyone wants to be in these movies, so I imagine Rian Johnson has his pick.

The most controversial film of 2024 has already been released and is attracting criticism from all sides. Written and directed by the visionary filmmaker Alex Garland (Ex Machina), Civil War has proven to be a massive hit for the A24. Civil War has everything you need including striking visuals, a gripping story, and complex characters. While there are people from both sides of the political aisle criticizing the film for not picking a side, I think that Garland did a wonderful job at showing us a broken America without blaming any political party for it.

As if “Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga” isn’t enough of a caffeine boost, this week’s digital debuts include no fewer than four heart-pounding thrill rides. First up, a movie-star vehicle that doubles as an ode to stunt work.
The contender to watch this week: “The Fall Guy“
David Leitch‘s action comedy adapted from the ’80s TV show of the same name had all the makings of an early summer blockbuster: adrenaline-pumping stunts, charismatic lead turns from Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, and generally favorable reviews. So why is Universal dropping it on VOD just 17 days after the release? Probably because “The Fall Guy” is perceived to be something of a flop. That line of thinking isn’t totally fair considering the movie has made $128.3 million and counting worldwide. Still, the studio expected more, especially because “The Fall Guy” seems like it will just barely recoup its budget in theaters.

None of the Alien sequels, prequels, and spin-offs have come close to matching Ridley Scott's 1979 classic. They also haven't touched James Cameron's sci-fi masterpiece, Aliens, released seven years later in 1986.
Filmmaker Fede Álvarez hopes to change that disappointing run of critical and commercial disappointments with Alien: Romulus, a movie which takes its cues from both Scott and Cameron's work. As you can see in the newly released images below, that aesthetic is one the director has leaned heavily into.
Talking to Total Film (via SFFGazette.com), Álvarez also confirmed he utilised similar practical effects to his predecessors, resulting in him getting advice from them both when it came to telling this story.
The latter reportedly consulted on the script during an "extensive" phone call with Álvarez and Alien: Romulus co-writer Rodo Sayagues. That included such minutiae as the size of the ship's engines!

From Whitney Houston to Elvis, there is no shortage of iconic singers who inspire sweeping films that dramatize their life stories. No matter the genre, cinematic features have captured the careers of the King of Rock and Roll Elvis Presley to country singer Jonny Cash. Most recently, Back to Black (2024) launched in theaters to capture the life and musical career of Amy Winehouse.
Still other films in the works will add to the canon of singer biography movies, like Timothée Chalamet’s upcoming portrayal of Bob Dylan in A Complete Unknown and nephew to Jaafar Jackson’s portrayal of his uncle the late Michael Jackson in Michael.

Fede Alvarez’s (Evil Dead, Don’t Breathe) Alien: Romulus is set between the events of Ridley Scott’s Alien and James Cameron’s Aliens, and Alvarez had explained to Total Film earlier this month that the film is something of a tonal fusion of the two classic Alien movies.
Alvarez teases, “The environments, and the pace of it as well – it’s more similar to Alien for quite a bit. And then gradually – you won’t even know – you feel like it’s more Aliens. It’s a natural progression, and it happens effortlessly.”
On that note, Fandango’s Summer Movie Preview brings us a brand new image from Alien: Romulus this morning, and you can certainly feel the Aliens vibes in this particular shot.
Check it out below and catch the franchise’s return in theaters August 16.

Alex Garland’s Civil War has been set for a June 7 theatrical release date in China. This marks the first time an A24 production will officially hit cinemas there. The dystopian thriller was acquired by Huahua Media in the market with Alibaba set to partner on the local release.
After world premiering at SXSW, Civil War opened in North America in April, scoring an A24 best launch of $25.7M and going on to cross $100M global within its first month. “Civil War,” Alex Garland’s film about journalists navigating a fractured United States, has set a digital release date.
The A24 film, which inspired plenty of critical debate, is set to debut on VOD on May 24. It will be available to rent/purchase on both Prime Video and Apple TV+.
Starring Kirsten Dunst, Cailee Spaeny, Wagner Moura, Stephen McKinley Henderson and Nick Offerman, the film set an A24 record with a $25 million opening weekend.
When speaking with Variety in a cover story about the film, Dunst said the work is intentionally meant to spark debate.
“The whole movie is open to interpretation,” Dunst said. “For me, there were things I just accepted that were unexplained. It allows the audience to fill in their own feelings about what they’re watching.”
Garland agreed it was best for him not to connect too many dots.
“I have my own answers to these questions.

The Current Debate is a column that connects the dots between great writing about a topic in the wider film conversation.Civil War.Every now and then there comes a film so in tune with our pestilential zeitgeist as to earn that most dangerous of descriptors: important. I can’t think of many words more vacuous, not only because of all the questions it leaves unanswered, but also because of the argument it peddles: that a film’s ability to sponge the mood of our times should count as an artistic merit. A film is important because it deals with important topics, or so the logic goes; it is necessary because these are things we all should care about, lessons we ought to treasure, and warnings we must heed. In this Neanderthal worldview, art is reduced to propaganda, and audiences to crowds who must be educated and pandered to. But...

EW has shared two new official promo stills for Alien: Romulus as part of their summer preview, and one of 'em pays homage to a scene from Aliens.
In James Cameron's follow-up to Ridley Scott's '70s classic, Corporal Hicks (Michael Biehn) shows Ripley (Sigourney Weaver) how to use a pulse rifle before the crew land in some real pretty sh*t with the attacking Xenomorphs, and the moment is recreated here with Archie Renaux's Tyler and Cailee Spaeny's Rain Carradine.
The second image gives us another look at a Xenomorph about to give an unfortunate crew member a very bad day.
While the previous movies focused on blue-collar colleagues, soldiers, and prisoners, director Fede Alvarez explains how Romulus will take a different approach by introducing a group of characters who have become as close as family.

Director Fede Álvarez’s contribution to the Alien franchise, Alien: Romulus, is set to reach theatres on August 16th (you can watch the teaser Here), and we have previously seen a picture of a Xenomorph from the film – in fact, that’s the image featured above this paragraph. Alex Garland’s brand new box office hit Civil War continues its successful theatrical run with more and more viewers attracted by everyone else’s raving reviews and the movie’s gut-wrenching plot.
A dystopian drama, Civil War offers a vast landscape of the post-apocalyptic United States engulfed by mass protests across the country, but the film’s most thrilling scene has no sign of the catastrophic war at all — quite literally.
Civil War initially follows a group of journalists led by Kirsten Dunst’s character who have to make their way safe and sound from New York to Washington D.C., the very heart of flaring rebellions.
During their trip the group makes a stop in a small American town where literally everybody consciously ignores the ongoing war and its repercussions. What’s the most terrifying here is that people there are pretty much aware of what their country...

True crime is getting more and more entertaining by the day and I don’t if that’s a good thing or a bad one. We have another brilliant true crime drama series, Under the Bridge, created by Quinn Shephard. Based on a 2005 book of the same name by Rebecca Godfrey, the Hulu series is set in 1997 and it follows the murder case of a 14-year-old girl which we see through the eyes of local police officer Cam Bentland and the author Godfrey. Under the Bridge stars Lily Gladstone and Riley Keough in the lead roles with Virtika Gupta, Chloe Guidry, Javon “Wanna” Walton, and Izzy G starring in supporting roles. So, if you love the thrilling and dreadful story of Under the Bridge, here are some other shows that have similar tone and story elements that you should check out next.

Tense, disturbing, riveting, Alex Garland’s dystopian film Civil War examines an existential threat preying on the American sub-conscious: What would happen if the political and social divisions cleaving the United States ultimately collapse the nation into the abyss? What if the wars of rhetoric, of culture, of values, cause a series of irreparable breaks, whole states secede and we descend into an actual war?
These are menacing questions made palpable because many of us feel we’re already at the brink. As we swirl in a civil war of ideas, a civil war of ideologies, a civil war in public discourse and policy that has created two completely different frames of reality, more than 40 percent of Americans polled just two years ago by YouGov and The Economist said they believe the nation could turn so far on itself that a civil war, a military conflict, is possible within this decade.

Authenticity holds a lot of value in Hollywood. As much as audiences love to watch remakes, retellings, and sequels, nothing catches their attention more than something original and magnificent. The one studio that is best known for only creating content like this is A24. The perfect example of such a story would be their recently released movie, Civil War.

In the classic style of the studio, the movie features an A-list cast of actors like Kirsten Dunst, Nick Offerman, Cailee Spaeny, and Wagner Moura, but has still managed to remain, somewhat, under the radar. With its recent release, the movie has gotten nothing short of splendid reviews from audiences and critics alike, hinting at a successful future at the box office.
