David Stephenson(XV)

David Stephenson is a Lecturer in the School of Journalism and Media and the Department of Integrated Strategic Communications. He also serves as the photojournalism and multimedia adviser for the student newspaper, the Kentucky Kernel. In addition, he maintains a steady client list as a freelance editorial photographer and multimedia storyteller.
Stephenson is a native of Lexington and worked as a staff photojournalist for the Lexington Herald-Leader from 1997 until 2009. He is a four-time recipient of the Kentucky News Photographer's Association's Photographer of the Year Award and has been named Sports Photographer of the Year three times. He won the National Press Photographers Association Region 4 Photographer of the Year twice.
Stephenson, a 1992 WKU graduate, published a four-year project, "A New Dawn?", following a young mother addicted to pain pills through a local Drug Court Program. This series was awarded the Best Multimedia Project in the prestigious 65th Pictures of the Year International (POYi) competition. A story about a Garrard County tobacco cutting competition was awarded First Place Multimedia News Story for POYi in 2010.
In addition to teaching multimedia full-time at UK and advising at the Kentucky Kernel, Stephenson is active in the freelance market as a photographer and multimedia journalist, specializing in news, editorial equine and sports photography. In the past five years, Stephenson has produced documentary videos for regional non-profits such as as the New Opportunity School for Women, The White House Clinics, and Green Forests Work.
Stephenson earned his Master's degree in Digital Storytelling from Asbury University (2017) and MFA (expected 2019), also from Asbury.
