The lead up to the fifth episode of "True Detective" season 1 is already filled with shocking twists and turns, as the Dora Lange case starts to take a murkier turn. In episode 5, detectives Rust Cohle (Matthew McConaughey) and Martin Hart (Woody Harrelson) track down a covert meth lab in a Louisiana bayou, where Reggie (Charles Halford) and Dewall Ledoux (Ólafur Darri Ólafsson) are camping out amid a minefield of explosive traps. Cohle pulls a gun on Dewall without hesitation while Hart checks out the interior of the hut, where he comes across two kidnapped children, who look severely traumatized. Enraged, he shoots Reggie in the face, while Dewall makes a run for it, and dies after tripping over one of the explosive traps. Body parts fly in all directions as the two detectives look on in horror, as the price for their impulsivity would be to concoct an elaborate lie...

While HBO’s True Detective has till date amassed 4 successful seasons, it was its first iteration, released way back in January 2014, that initially thrust it into the mainstream. Starring Matthew McConaughey as Detective Rustin Cohle and Woody Harrelson as Detective Martin Hart, the dynamics between the two were one of the most obvious things that impressed fans.

Still, McConaughey’s role, in particular, was the obvious highlight of Season 1, that of a troubled yet astounding detective who cannot help but concern his partner with his philosophical ramblings. The Wolf of Wall Street star in itself was the creator Nic Pizzolatto’s first choice for the role, although he had to jump through a considerable number of hoops in order to make this happen.
This included rejecting a number of actors that the studio suggested, and coming up with a creative strategy to get his man.

“From the dusty mesa, her looming shadow grows.”
10 years ago, these ominous lyrics (courtesy of the alternative country duo The Handsome Family) introduced us to a horrific world of crime, conspiracy and multi-layered madness in the infamous intro to HBO’s hit show, True Detective. From that very first episode, we all knew this was going to be something special, with Nic Pizzolatto and Cary Fukunaga teaming up for a cinematic fusion of different genres that would end up earning countless accolades.
And while this made it difficult for subsequent seasons to compete with that masterful debut (even if they were all entertaining in their own unique ways), Issa López’s ongoing True Detective: Night Country is finally harkening back to the quasi-supernatural terror that flavored Marty and Rust’s story, with the showrunner going so far as to describe her new tale as a dark mirror of the first season.

This article contains spoilers for True Detective: Night Country episode 2.
If the “Night Country” subtitle didn’t already give it away, True Detective season 4 is a bit of a departure from the previous three installments of HBO‘s beloved crime anthology.
Original True Detective creator and writer of the first three seasons Nic Pizzolatto is no longer involved with the series. That’s something that he’s elected to make very clear from his Instagram.
In Pizzolatto’s place has stepped indie auteur Issa López to craft a story about two mismatched detectives investigating a spooky crime in the perpetual night of Northern Alaska. Still, despite López’s lack of connection to the first three seasons of True Detective (or maybe even because of it), Night Country features more Easter eggs and callbacks to True Detective‘s first season than any other season has attempted by far. This includes the...

Apple Original Films and Skydance Media’s The Family Plan is thrilled to welcome Michelle Monaghan to the cast of the upcoming film. The Gone Baby Gone and Mission: Impossible – Fallout star will co-star alongside Mark Wahlberg in the action-comedy helmed by Simon Cellan Jones and written by David Coggeshall.
The plot for The Family Plan revolves around a suburban father who takes his family on the run after his past comes back to haunt him. Monaghan’s role is unconfirmed, though she’ll likely play Wahlberg’s wife.
Monaghan is no stranger to action after appearing in films like The Bourne Supremacy and several movies in the Mission: Impossible franchise, including Mission: Impossible III, Mission: Impossible – Ghost Protocol, and Mission: Impossible – Fallout. She played Maggie Hart, the ex-wife of Detective Martin Hart, in the first season of HBO’s True Detective and Eva Geller in the Netflix TV series Messiah.

Last night, for the first time in several months, Matthew McConaughey wasn’t at home watching his favorite show on TV: HBO’s True Detective, in which he stars as the brilliant but deeply troubled homicide cop Rustin “Rust” Cohle. “I’m doing what the public’s doing,” he says. “I received all eight episodes, but I said, ‘You know what? I’m gonna check them out each Sunday night and then sit on each episode for a week.’ I’ve found myself going back and watching each one of...
