Update: At CinemaCon, Universal confirmed they’ll be releasing Five Nights at Freddy’s 2 in Fall 2025.
The original article follows:
The video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) quickly became Blumhouse Productions’ highest-grossing movie when it reached theatres and the Peacock streaming service back in October, surpassing the likes of Split, The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises with its haul of $295 million. So of course they’re developing a sequel, even if one hasn’t been officially announced yet. Five Nights at Freddy’s star Josh Hutcherson already said back in January that they were “nailing down the story” and hoping to get into production as soon as possible. Now Blumhouse founder Jason Blum has shared a picture that was taken at Jim Henson’s Creature Shop, the company that provided the...

It’s an established fact that popular video games rarely make good movies, and so it proves with Five Nights at Freddy’s. Produced by Blumhouse and co-written by game creator Scott Cawthorn, the film should have been a fun little scarefest packed with creepy suspense moments, but instead it’s a drab disappointment thanks to a dismal and messy script that fails to capitalise on the game’s core appeal.
Josh Hutcherson stars as Mike Schmidt, who accepts a job as a security guard after a meeting with his careers counsellor (Matthew Lillard), in part because he needs financial security in order to stop his interfering aunt (Mary Stuart Masterson) from taking custody of his young sister...

Lillard told Syfy Wire he would love to reprise the role of William Afton. “If it does come back, and if I’m lucky to be brought back, sure, yeah. I mean, I barely got to touch him, right? I got to kill my daughter, but we know nothing about him. We know nothing about his history, about his journey.

Blumhouse Productions has been one of the biggest names in horror for several years now, putting out movies like The Invisible Man, The Black Phone, M3GAN, the recent Halloween sequel trilogy, and the Paranormal Activity, Insidious, and The Purge franchises, among many others. October 6th saw the theatrical release of their Exorcist sequel The Exorcist: Believer, which is meant to be the first entry in a trilogy… and the poor reception that movie got from movie-goers and critics alike wasn’t exactly what Universal and Peacock were hoping for when they forked over around $400 million for the rights to distribute that trilogy. But Blumhouse’s luck turned around three weeks later. That’s when their video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s (read our review Here) reached theatres – and that movie has officially become their highest-grossing production!

We’ve always known what creeps us out. From clowns to small tight spaces, we as an audience have been subjected to enough now that we know what people and places to stay away from. Some of those have included fun houses, and others include creepy animatronic kid’s entertainment. With movies like The Funhouse (1981) and Magic (1978) reminding of this, Five Nights at Freddy’s should be just as creepy and just as unnerving, unfortunately however, it is not. Five Nights at Freddy’s is neither creepy nor entertaining, even though there is a stellar performance from Josh Hutcherson.

Universal and Blumhouse’s Five Nights at Freddy’s is off to a historic start at the domestic box office.
The latest horror offering from Universal and Blumhouse is headed for record-smashing $78 million opening after grossing a monstrous $39.5 million on Friday, including $10.3 million in Thursday previews. The pic — which is coming in notably ahead of industry expectations — is on course to claim one of the top horror openings of all time, as well as the best showing ever for Halloween weekend among all films, despite the fact that it is debuting simultaneously on streaming service Peacock. It’s also the biggest horror opening of 2023 to date, besting Scream VI ($44.4 million), and the second-biggest opening of all time for a video-game adaptation behind The Super Mario Bros. Movie ($146.3 million), not adjusted for inflation.

With only a couple more months left in 2023, will it be the movie year of the toy? Considering the Barbie box office bonanza…probably. That’s especially true if you throw video games into that category. We’ve seen those Super Mario Brothers, a nifty true-life thriller on the making of Tetris, another non-fiction sports flick involving the motor-racing world of Gran Turismo. And now we go from brightly colored pixel ‘shrooms to whirring-blade-fueled horror. Really, a game that elicits fear as you rack up the points? Oh yeah, this one is so popular there has already been at least one cinema rip-off (using those Saturday morning funsters The Banana Splits which this official fan club member did not appreciate). It’s kinda’ how The Sword And The Sorcerer beat Conan to the multiplex by a few weeks in 1982. Well, now here comes the “real deal”, based on the gaming smash,...

Five Nights at Freddy’s partied hard on its first night in theaters.
The latest horror offering from Universal and Blumhouse scared up a massive $10.3 million in Thursday previews at the domestic box office. That’s on par with New Line’s It: Chapter Two ($10.5 million), which debuted to a record $91 million in 2019, not adjusted for inflation. And it’s notably ahead of Blumhouse/Universal’s Halloween ($7.7 million), which also smashed records when opening to $76.2 million in 2018, as well as Halloween Kills ($4.9 million) and Halloween Ends ($5.4 million), not adjusted for inflation. It also trumped Jordan Peele’s Us ($7.4 million).
Freddy’s is tracking to open to $45 million to $50 million, a huge sum considering that the movie is being released simultaneously on Universal’s sister streaming service, Peacock (only paid-tier subscribers will have access). Others think it will do notably more, a premise backed up by the preview gross. But no one...

Aside from one non-canon take on an RPG, Scott Cawthon’s Five Nights at Freddy’s series has been milking the same creepy, winning formula for nine years. In the games, players inhabit a night-shift security guard charged with keeping an eye on a gang of sentient, decaying animatronic animals, who’ve claimed residence at a derelict Chuck E. Cheese-like establishment called Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. Fail at closing doors and checking cameras, among other tasks, and one of these big fuzzy lummoxes does horrible things to your face.
Emma Tammi’s Five Nights at Freddy’s takes that formula and doesn’t exactly run with it. There’s a brief assault against a gang trying to break into the pizzeria that ends in one of the film’s two memorable moments of violence. The other? A climactic moment that’s basically the finale of Clive Barker’s Hellraiser but with pizza mascots.

Even when “Five Nights at Freddy’s” was a video game, the franchise has always been watched more than it has been played. A tiny budget indie game released unceremoniously in 2014, the original point-and-click title’s gameplay loop amounts to little more than viewing security camera feeds, occasionally pressing a few buttons to turn on some lights and close some doors. But Scott Cawthon’s passion project, created after the developer cut his teeth on Christian-themed games (seriously), became a phenomenon through a barrage of reaction videos that spread on social media of players shrieking at the jump scares that give the otherwise quiet title some moderate spark.
In that context, the film adaptation’s simultaneous release in theaters and on Peacock, usually a sign of little confidence in a project, feels oddly fitting. Streaming replicates the solo terrors of playing through the game on your PC, while going to theaters...

In the new film version of the popular video game Five Nights At Freddy’s, it is the Jim Henson Creature Shop and its talented puppeteers and character actors who are the real stars of this Blumhouse take on the game that the under-25 male set particularly warmed up to since its debut in 2014. Whether they will be happy with this carefully constructed but safe PG-13 movie that sacrifices hard-core horror for character development and that at times just drags along, time will tell.
In case you aren’t familiar with the game franchise created by Scott Cawthorn, Five Nights At Freddy’s is a phenomenon in the sector, having hatched nine different games to date, several spinoffs, a novel trilogy and an anthology series all for the love of Freddy Fazbear, Bonnie, Chica and Foxy the Pirate, 70foot-tall animatronic creatures who are capable of violence or love depending who is in the room with them.

Can you survive five nights?
The cult video game series, Five Nights at Freddy’s, created by Scott Cawthon, gained a dedicated fanbase for its suspenseful, jump-scare-filled gameplay when it was released in 2014. Several spin-offs followed and have now been turned into a long-awaited feature directed by Emma Tammi and written by Scott Cawthon, Emma Tammi and Seth Cuddebac.
The film stars Josh Hutcherson as the titular character, Mike, a troubled security guard who begins working at Freddy Fazbear’s Pizza. While spending his first night on the job, he realizes that the night shift at Freddy’s won’t be so easy to make it through.
The original game’s objective was to survive for five or more nights by monitoring security cameras, closing doors, and utilizing limited resources to protect oneself from the animatronic characters that came to life at night. The backstory, narrated by the previous nightshift worker...

October (and even September) have been chock-full of appropriately scary horror movies for spooky season, and the weekend before Halloween introduces one more. Read on for Gold Derby’s box office preview.

Producer Jason Blum believes what sets Five Nights at Freddy’s apart from other adaptations is “the care that was taken with the story to create something based on a beloved game.” Universal Pictures’ new featurette is dedicated to the game’s fans, and director/co-writer Emma Tammi says that every creative decision they made was with the goal of doing justice to the game and its massive fan base.
Josh Hutcherson and Elizabeth Lail lead the cast of the horror film. Piper Rubio, Kat Conner Sterling (We Have a Ghost), Mary Stuart Masterson (Blindspot), and Matthew Lillard also star.
Scott Cawthon created the Five Night at Freddy’s game and is involved as a writer and producer. Seth Cuddeback also co-wrote the screenplay, with Bea Sequeira, Russell Binder, Marc Mostman, and Christopher H. Warner executive producing. Jim Henson’s Creature Shop created the film’s animatronic characters.

No one knew how big this was going to be, or is going to be, but Universal/Blumhouse’s feature take on beloved horror video game, Five Nights at Freddy‘s is eyeing a $50 million-plus start and possibly even more. At that level, it would make it the second-best domestic box office opening of the fall behind Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour ($92.8M).
Note the pre-Halloween weekend isn’t known as a robust time for launching films, with the frame’s biggest openings Puss in Boots with $34M back in 2011 and 2006’s Saw III with $33.6M.
Presales have grown to a crazy amount on this $20M production since we last reported (some saying well north of $11M), with some exhibitors projecting a tentpole-type opening of $85M. However, what should give one pause here is the whole theatrical day-and-date of it all on Peacock (note the movie is only available on a paid tier). Last year,...

The long-awaited horror video game adaptation Five Nights at Freddy’s will be receiving a theatrical and Peacock streaming service release this Friday, October 27th – and to help promote the release, a new featurette has arrived online to give fans a peek behind the scenes. You can check it out in the embed above. The film’s director Emma Tammi talks about the film in that featurette, and also recently sat down for an interview with the folks at Inverse, where she discussed how it was to work with homicidal animatronics while also going for a PG-13 rating.
Tammi told Inverse, “We were trying to push it as far as we could while still retaining that PG-13 rating. That meant the kills needed to be executed in a certain way. And while it is so fun in many slasher films to see all the guts and the gore, it is...

It may be Taylor Swift tearing up the box office right now, but the pop star has some major competition coming just around the corner in the form of some deadly animatronic robots. "Five Nights at Freddy's," which is adapted from the wildly popular series of video games of the same name, is set to arrive just in time for Halloween. And, after years of being stuck in development hell, it appears as though the film is going to have the second-biggest debut of the fall season thus far. It is poised to become the next big horror sensation.
Tracking is a bit all over the place for this one but Deadline reports that the video game adaptation, which hails from Blumhouse Productions and Universal Pictures, is set to make around $40 million on opening weekend. The outlet also reports that $30 million is considered the worst-case scenario here and, given that...

Exclusive: Here’s an eyebrow raiser in the wake of a zany box office season turned upside down by the actors strike, and ruled by Taylor Swift: Universal/Blumhouse’s feature take of videogame, Five Nights at Freddy’s, is shaping up for an opening around $40M. That would be the second-best opening at the fall box office Ytd after Taylor Swift: The Eras Tour‘s $92.8M start. The pic hits theaters and Peacock on Oct. 27.
Worst case, it’s in the $30M range. That said, there are some big numbers out there, but let’s not go overboard: A year ago tracking had Universal’s theatrical-day-and-date-Peacock release of Halloween Ends north of $50M. The Jamie Lee Curtis final installment in a trio of David Gordon Green-directed Halloween movies came in at $40M over three-days. Box office was certainly dented by the pic’s avail on Peacock, however, the...

I've written a lot about "Five Nights at Freddy's" this year, and the question I've received more than any other is, "Why do you know so much about this game my kids play?" I was a casual fan of the first game, overtaken by the Let's Play phenomenon in my mid-20s, but then my 10-year-old niece was bitten by the "FNaF" bug. Now she texts me every update ... not realizing she's reading articles I've written and sent to her dad to make sure she's not missing a beat.
When I was a kid, my hero was the clerk at the video store down the street from my childhood home who wanted to foster my love of horror by actually talking about it with me, instead of dismissing me for being a child. I always swore that I would be that person to the kiddos in my life, and it's...

If Chuck E Cheese gave you nightmares, you might want to just go ahead and cross Five Nights at Freddy’s off your must-see list. If not, then the new trailer showcasing the animatronic characters will probably make you move the film higher up on that same list.
Based on the popular video games created by Scott Cawthon, Five Nights at Freddy’s stars Josh Hutcherson (The Hunger Games franchise), Elizabeth Lail (You), Piper Rubio (Unstable), and Kat Conner Sterling (We Have a Ghost). Mary Stuart Masterson (Blindspot) and Matthew Lillard (Good Girls) also star in the creepy film adaptation.

"Tell me how to stop them?" "You don't." Blumhouse has revealed a second official trailer for Five Nights At Freddy's, arriving in theaters just in time for Halloween this fall. The first two trailers have been pretty good, maybe more footage will get your attention. Based on the super popular video game series of the same name. The series consists of nine games at various locations connected to a family pizza restaurant franchise named "Freddy Fazbear's Pizza", based on its mascot, the animatronic bear Freddy Fazbear. In this horror movie, a troubled security guard begins working at Freddy Fazbear's Pizza. Spending his first night on the job, he realizes the night shift at Freddy's has awoken something horrifying. Starring Josh Hutcherson, also with Matthew Lillard, Elizabeth Lail, Mary Stuart Masterson, Kat Conner Sterling, Jessica Weiss, and Grant Feely. Very curious to see how they expand this story with these animatronic monsters.

"Five Nights at Freddy's" is one of the true video game success stories in recent memory, with the indie series becoming an absolute phenomenon in a real grassroots sort of way. As anyone would expect, Hollywood eventually came calling to adapt the tale for the big screen. And while horror maestro Jason Blum of Blumhouse Productions fame finally managed to make it happen, it was a long journey that took a full six years. And even though he's a big-shot movie producer, Blum sees this as a real underdog situation for several reasons.
Speaking with IGN in June 2023, Blum explained how he and game creator Scott Cawthon spent years developing the film, which hits theaters and Peacock this fall. "Scott had been working on it as a movie with a studio for a while and that didn't work out, this is many years ago," Blum said. "Everyone said we could never get the movie done,...
