Stars: Shannon Dalonzo, Justin Gordon, Simon Phillips, Eileen Dietz, James Politano, Briahn Auguillard | Written by Noah Bessey | Directed by Robert Gajic
Opening his directorial debut in an intriguing manner, Robert Gajic has a woman’s voiceover share the character’s biggest fear at losing someone she cannot imagine life without. Quick cuts on-screen show a frightened woman chased by an unseen figure as credits roll, with the juxtaposition of audible love and visual fear crafting an intrigue for what circumstances will occur. Sadly, what unfolds cannot match this initial intrigue.
Fiancées Sarah (Shannon Dalonzo) and Michael (Justin Gordon) are driving across a desert setting, passing the time with hypothetical situations. They’re journeying to visit Sarah’s ill father, as she hopes he’ll be able to attend their wedding. Their ham-fisted dialogue is interrupted by the car hitting something, despite there being no sign of whatever they hit.

A young couple drive around in circles in the desert while being pursued by a demonic driver in this tedious wannabe shocker
This lumpy, tedious horror thriller teases a big mystery as to what’s really going on for a couple who keep finding themselves back on the same stretch of highway no matter which direction they drive off in. Unfortunately, the reveal at the end is the second most hackneyed plot twist in film history. (Hint: it’s the one that isn’t “it was all a dream”.) The best way not to break your brain trying to guess is just not watch this nonsense at all.
Those who persist in ignoring this warning will be subjected to an attenuated campfire-style spooky story that starts with young lovers Sarah and Michael (Justin Gordon) driving along the stretch of Route 66 that, judging by the cactus-like vegetation, is just near Joshua Tree national park.

Has any showdown on the highway film ever come close to Steven Spielberg’s Duel? Certainly not many, and there’s a reason for that. What Spielberg understood was that to be effective a film like this has to be minimal, every shot focused on managing the tension, never distracting from the central threat. The Fearway does the opposite, claiming to be scary but suffocated by additional plotting as unnecessary as it is obvious, and with terrible acting to boot.
On their way to visit her father, who is in poor health following a series of heart attacks, Sarah (Shannon DaLonzo) and Michael (Justin Gordon) have a bizarre accident, skidding on what appears to be a patch of ice on a long desert road in the daytime. There’s a mystery here, so one starts out hoping that the film will go somewhere interesting, but instead most of the running time is spent literally.
