What if you could find your soulmate through science, and what if the person you're most compatible with just happens to be someone you despise? That's the premise behind bestselling writing duo Christina Lauren's latest novel, The Soulmate Equation (out May 18). In the story, Jess Davis is a statistician and single mom who enjoys her quiet life raising her daughter, Juno, alongside her grandparents and her best friend, Fizzy. The last thing she needs is to enter the chaotic dating world again, but if there's one thing that can convince her, it's the numbers and data behind GeneticAlly, a buzzy new DNA-based matchmaking company. It's just too bad that the man Jess ends up scoring an unprecedented 98 percent match with is the company's founder and head scientist, Dr. River Peña - a man whom she not only already knows, but who also isn't exactly the epitome of friendly charm.

I read a lot of thriller novels - like, a lot - and The One by John Marrs is the best recommendation I've gotten in a long time. The international bestseller, set in the near future, weaves the stories of five main characters who are all affected in various ways by a revolutionary DNA test that locates your ideal partner. As you may be able to tell from the cover, not everything turns out with a fairy-tale wedding. Relationships are shattered, secrets are revealed, and, eventually, blood is spilled.
Netflix has adapted the book into a series, and it only takes a viewing of the trailer (below) to realize that the show is incredibly different than the book. Before we get into those major differences, though, let's take a look at the book. If you've read it, this will serve as a good refresher course before you dive into the show; if you haven't,...

Set in the very near future where scientists have discovered a method of matching people with their perfect romantic fit using DNA, eight-part Netflix Original The One is technically a sci-fi drama. Really though, it’s a crime thriller revolving around the murky circumstances in which the cash cow company behind the matching service was created. Written by Misfits and Crazyhead creator Howard Overman, The One is based on the 2017 novel of the same name by John Marrs. It’s a cat-and-mouse game between wealthy, driven CEO Rebecca (Hannah Ware) and police detective Kate (Zoë Tapper).
While you’re solving the show’s mysteries, we’ve taken the liberty of solving that nagging background question of where you might have seen its cast on screen before…

The Netflix sci-fi thriller The One carries with it an intriguing premise: the scientific ability to identify soulmates. Within its eight episodes, it tells quite a bit of story in its interwoven plot lines, but the question remains whether or not a season two is in the cards. For now, there's no word yet on whether or not The One will get a second season, and that's not surprising at all.
For one thing, the show is based on a novel, The One by John Marrs, which in and of itself would seem to be a bit limiting in terms of planning for another series. It's not part of an ongoing series of books at the moment, unlike other TV shows adapted from books, which also would seem to work against it having more than one season. If there were a second season, the writers would pretty much need to...

"The One", is a new dramatic, 8-episode science fiction TV series, based on the novel by John Marrs, starring Hannah Ware, streaming March 12, 2021 on Netflix:
"...'The One' is set five minutes in the future, in a world where a 'DNA' test can find your perfect partner – the one person you're genetically predisposed to fall passionately in love with. No matter how good your relationship, which one of us can honestly say we haven't thought about whether there is someone better out there? What if a hair sample is all it takes to find them? The idea is simple, but the implications are explosive. We will never think of love and relationships in the same way again..."

We’re at the stage now where every single month brings a ton of new Netflix Originals to the streaming giant. This week, for instance, we’ve got The Umbrella Academy season 2, while August’s load includes Project Power and Lucifer season 5. Looking ahead further into the future, however, and October will also bring a good deal of notable Netflix Originals.
It’s too soon for many of them to have specific release dates, but we can narrow them down to that specific month, at least. And so far, we know that October is set to deliver period dramas, horrors, sci-fi and projects from some of the best creators around.
See below for the full list of what Netflix has announced for the month so far:

Netflix is using a unique method to tell the story of one of the bloodiest and most dramatic events during World War II.
The streamer ordered a four-part drama, “The Liberator” that will be a mix of live action and CGI that use a new technology called Trioscope Enhanced Hybrid Animation. The combat drama will follow Sparks and the 157th Infantry Regiment from Oklahoma, a National Guard unit comprised primarily of cowboys, Native Americans and Mexican-Americans from the Invasion of Italy to the liberation of the concentration camp of Dachau.
Based on Alex Kershaw’s book “The Liberator: One World War II Soldier’s 500-Day Odyssey,” the series was created by “Die Hard” and “The Fugitive” writer Jeb Stuart.

Are you ready to find The One? Netflix appears to be.
Netflix is quickly becoming a hub for science fiction. The streamer has ordered a new series from Future Man and Misfits creator Howard Overman titled The One.
The series is set in the near future where a DNA test can reveal a person’s perfect partner, and the implications of having the perfect match lead to some explosive decisions. The series is adapted from a 2017 novel by John Marrs, who has said in interviews that he sees the story as a relationship-focused one, rather than hard sci-fi. The novel follows five people who have unexpected matches.
The One received a 10-episode order and will be written by Overman, whose other TV writing credits include Merlin, Dirk Gently, and E4/Netflix’s Crazyhead.
Overman co-created the well-reviewed, Seth Rogen-produced sci-fi comedy Future Man, which streams on Hulu.
