The announcement of DC shutting down the Vertigo imprint was certainly a sad day for comics, however, it has been inevitable for some time. DC did recently try to relaunch Vertigo with a slew of new titles to bring life back to the brand, but despite critical acclaim for many of those series, it was a relaunch that never got off the ground. Vertigo gave us some of the greatest and most revolutionary comics of all time, but due to a shifting market, its importance has dwindled.
What has not dwindled is the influence it and the books that made up the Vertigo line have had on the medium. Looking across the comic landscape there are publishers who very much live in a similar spirit that made Vertigo so legendary. With that in mind, I wanted to point some of those publishers out for those who wish to live in the glory days once again.

With the launch of Marvel Legacy and his upcoming Netflix series, this is the perfect time for The Punisher to become a big deal again in the world of comics. Not since Garth Ennis penned the title was Punisher a major comic that required you to take notice. Enter Matthew Rosenberg who has made a name for himself with some of his indie titles like 4 Kids Walk Into the Bank, and also made this year’s Kingpin series better than it had any business being. Marvel has taken note of that success and given him some major books to make his own. The question being, of course, can he live up to the potential everyone thinks he has?

It’s the best time to be a Punisher fan. The hero’s profile has never been so high before, courtesy of Netflix’s imminent TV series. What’s more, Matthew Rosenberg and Guiu Vilanova are launching their new comic book series today and this time round, Marvel has something special planned.
Everybody knows the Punisher. He’s the man who lives in the back of a van. He doesn’t have many friends, but he does wield a terrifying arsenal. Now imagine what a man like Frank Castle would do if he got hold of the War Machine armor? That’s the basic premise of Rosenberg’s new Punisher series, which kicks off with #218. The idea left fans seriously excited, not least because this was marketed as “parental advisory.” It’s immediately reminiscent of the old Marvel Max imprint, which included some of the best Punisher runs of all-time.

It’s certainly shaping up to be a week to remember if you’re a fan of The Punisher, now isn’t it? Aside from yesterday’s reveal of Jon Bernthal in full costume taken from the upcoming Netflix series, more details are slowly creeping their way online when it comes to what lies ahead for Frank Castle in the comic book medium.
As you may remember, James Rhodes unfortunately met his end during the events of Civil War II. But, as it turns out, his War Machine armor won’t be going to waste because – get this – Castle will be picking up where Iron Man’s best buddy left off this fall as part of the Marvel Legacy initiative! As you may have heard, Marvel Comics' "Edge of Venomverse" series is giving the Marvel Universe a complete Venom overhaul. A lot of classic Marvel characters are being infused with the Venom Symbiote. So far we've seen X-23 merge with Venom, Gwenpool, Ghost Rider, Wolverine, and even Captain America, which you can see above.
Marvel artist Mike Hawthorne helped in developing the character designs for the "Edge of Venomverse" series and he has released an alternate design for the Venom version of Captain America and it's a lot more menacing looking than the design they ended up using that you can see above.
Hawthorne posted the images with the caption:
"Want a peek behind the scenes? Ok, I'm going to share some of the character design work I did for Marvel's Venomverse event where various Marvel characters get the venom symbiote. First up, Captain America (Captain Venom?). Anyway, enjoy!

Having blown away audiences with her big screen debut in Logan, it comes as no surprise that Marvel would want to feature X-23 in the comics more heavily going forward. So, until Dafne Keen is able to reprise her role, we’ll settle for whatever literary adventures we can get our hands on – especially ones as crazy (in a good way) as Edge of Venomverse #1.
Serving as a prelude to the upcoming event series Venomverse, this five-issue limited run written by Matthew Rosenberg (Secret Warriors) and illustrated by Roland Boschi (Karnak, Ghost Rider) will, as Marvel puts it, “bring you the story of young mutant clone X-23…who gets more than she bargains for when she collides with an alien symbiote that affects her already enhanced abilities!”
That coupled with a statement from Rosenberg himself...

Steve Rogers: Captain America #17
Written by Nick Spencer | Art by Andres Guinaldo | Published by Marvel Comics
There has been a lot of things said regarding the current state of Marvel and one of the biggest issues that needs to be addressed is the inconsistency of art in some of their biggest books. While having multiple artist is not ideal, that issue is only compounded when that art is simply not very good. Considering this is tied into the biggest Marvel event going it is down right shocking to find some panels that are amateur level. Nick Spencer is writing a quality script and it simply deserves better.
In the issue Steve Rogers decides to sit down for an on camera interview in order to boast about the success the country is now facing under Hydra rule, however the reporter he faces off with quickly shows she is willing to...

Now that Marvel’s latest – and arguably most controversial – event, Secret Empire, is up and running, it’s time to roll out the usual variety of tie-ins. While Secret Empire has been a great read so far (yes, it’s destroying Captain America’s character, but hey, it’s undoubtedly exciting), the spinoff comics to these type of events tend to be a mixed bag. Thankfully, Secret Warriors #1 is an entertaining and very solid issue.
Our protagonist is Daisy Johnson Aka Quake, one of the few good S.H.I.E.L.D. agents left. With Steve Rogers having led Hydra to a takeover of the country, Johnson inadvertently becomes the leader of an eclectic team of Inhuman rebels. Namely, Ms. Marvel, Moon Girl and Devil Dinosaur, Inferno and Karnak. Despite the presence of a couple of males,...

Back in 2014, the blockbuster success of Guardians of the Galaxy took Marvel by surprise. The months that followed saw Marvel Comics do everything it could to capitalize on the film’s popularity. In those days, pretty much every member of the Guardians got their own comic – Star-Lord, Groot, Rocket Raccoon, etc. Not many of the books lasted more than a handful of issues, however.
Now, in 2017, Marvel’s a lot more on-the-ball. The House of Ideas knew full well that Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 would be one of the most popular films of the year. So, history’s repeating itself and the publisher is launching a whole range of books once again, including solo series. Although this time, they’re releasing alongside the film. They say that every villain is the hero of their own story. Yes, Wilson Fisk has done some bad things. Deplorable things. He has cheated the law. He has blackmailed rivals. He has killed. But that’s all in the past now. It’s time for a new beginning. And it begins this February in Kingpin #1 – the new ongoing series from breakout writer Matthew Rosenberg and Marvel newcomer Ben Torres!
The Kingpin is out for a clean start. Wilson Fisk returns to the city he loves with a new goal in mind—to make his mark as a titan of legitimate industry. First things first though, he’ll need to repair his public image. When Wilson Fisk makes a disgraced journalist an offer she can’t refuse, the spiraling saga of crime and betrayal begins anew. Sure, he’s out for a clean start. How long before his hands get dirty again?...

Over the years, Wilson Fisk has established himself as one of the Marvel Universe’s most diabolical villains. After first appearing in the pages of The Amazing Spider-Man, the Kingpin of Crime went on to spend years terrorizing Daredevil and their battles would ultimately become the stuff of legend.
However, big changes are coming to the Kingpin’s world this February, as Marvel is launching a new, ongoing creative series from the team of writer Matthew Rosenberg and newcomer Ben Torres. Along with a huge batch of variant covers and preview pages, a synopsis for the series has been released which reveals that…Fisk is turning over a new leaf?!

Easier said than done. Be there when Rocket’s quest to return to the stars begins on December 28th, in Rocket Raccoon #1.
