The following article contains major spoilers for the novels Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror and The Trench, as well as the feature films The Meg and Meg 2: The Trench.
One year before Steven Spielberg made us all afraid to go into the water, Peter Benchley’s 1974 novel Jaws took the literary world by storm. Nearly fifty years after publication it remains one of the most popular examples of shark fiction with few titles entering the waters of its elite circle. One such novel is Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror by Steve Alten.
Published in 1997, this sci-fi horror brings to life Otodus megalodon, a prehistoric relative of the great white shark estimated to stretch up to 65 feet in length. The novel pits retired rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham in the movies) against this mammoth beast after it escapes from a warmer pocket of water near the Mariana Trench.

Sharks have long been the subject of fascination, fear, and folklore. From the terrifying Great White in Jaws to the mythical Megalodon in The Meg, these creatures have swum their way into our collective nightmares and cultural consciousness. Let's dive into the deep end and explore some of the most intriguing shark myths and legends, with a special focus on their appearances in the horror genre as the ultimate apex predator.
The Great White: Not Just a Hollywood Starlet
The Great White Shark, renowned for its Oscar-worthy performance in Jaws (1975), is far more than just a fearsome movie star. According to the Florida Museum of Natural History, these oceanic A-listers can grow up to an impressive 20 feet in length. But it's not just about size; they are also the Einsteins of the ocean. Studies by Nature reveal their remarkable intelligence, displaying complex social structures and cunning hunting strategies. Move over,...

Running out of human adversaries who can square off with him, action star Jason Statham has once again decided to punch gigantic prehistoric sharks as Meg 2: The Trench, the sequel to the 2018 monster action flick Meg, has been released in theaters worldwide. Like the first installment, the sequel is also an adaptation of Steve Alten’s Megalodon-based novels, in this context, “The Trench,” and does a decent job of staying true to the source material quite unexpectedly, given how the previous movie ended.
However, despite having the very basic responsibility of delivering a no-nonsense, run-of-the-mill summer spectacle, Meg 2 fumbles miserably as it falls victim to extremely clichéd characterization, dragged storytelling, and a horribly patchwork third act. Annoying kids constantly jeopardizing the lives of others, Poc scientists reduced to comic relief, any real sense of trepidation washed off with poorly CGI’d creatures, unnecessary and bland humor—every single...

The unknown depths of the sea have always fascinated humanity and appealed to us, both through their beauty and terror. Evoking this fear of the unknown, Steven Spielberg revolutionized the creature horror genre forever through his first blockbuster hit, Jaws (1975). Since then, a plethora of imitative works have been released, along with three mediocre sequels, never quite able to emulate the dread ever again. However, the astronomical success of Jaws resulted in studios indulging in a really weird obsession with shark-related action movies ever since, which culminated in abominations like Sharknado and Sharktopus, which might be some of the worst crimes done to the species aside from human exploitation.
Although not that deplorable in essence, keeping in tradition with mega-budget shark action movies, Meg was released in 2018 and pitted the monstrous prehistoric shark Megalodon against Jason Statham and co. With its sequel, Meg 2: The Trench, on its way to be released this week,...

Mimicking the infamous Jaws poster, complete with Megalodon-sized shark about to chomp on an unsuspecting female swimmer, poster artwork for director James Nunn’s Jetski – renamed Shark Bait – offers up exactly as it says in its new title, complete with Noughties-style effects. Fans of shark thrillers will be pleasantly entertained by it, but do not expect anything more innovative to reinvigorate the genre, first born out of Steven Spielberg’s iconic 1976 film.

Chicago – From their golden age from the 1950s to the 1970s, the infamous “B” movies – usually the third feature at the drive-in, or playing in the crumbling old theaters – were targeted to teens. In the modern era, these films are now given $150 million dollar budgets and wide releases. Case in point, the shark movie called “The Meg.”
Rating: 3.0/5.0
Had this been made in the previous “B” years, this Jaws-on-Steroids epic would have featured fake sharks and lots of quick editing to compensate for the lack of a credible monster. Now money is thrown at computer generation, and The Meg comes to life in vivid 3D or at the IMAX. The absurd characters and the stiff acting remains, however, and this co-production between the U.S. and China features both cultures of performers reciting lines as if they just memorized them. But the movie has that level of action and kitsch that makes it work,...

With 42 overseas markets open through Friday, Warner Bros’ prehistoric shark The Meg has chomped down on $34.5M at the international box office. That includes a $16.2M Friday in China, but not Saturday’s fish flash of another $16.1M there. All told, the Chinese co-production is now looking at a debut offshore weekend around the $90M mark.
Including the Middle Kingdom mouthful on Friday, The Meg swallowed $26.7M from roughly 26,705 screens overseas. Audiences are going along for the ride on a summer fun movie that does not take itself too seriously — although it’s expensive at what we hear is a $178M cost before P&A (studio insiders contend it’s $130M net).

The Meg may seem like a film you would watch late at night on a basic cable channel but the $150 million dollar budget says otherwise. The film, based on the popular book Meg, is Jaws on steroids with more humor and in this insistence, that is a good thing. The plot? Well, it’s marine biologists and Jason Statham trying to stop a 75-foot-long prehistoric shark known as the Megalodon, i.e. the Meg, from eating people. That about sums up the film.
Oh, you want the longer form of the plot? Jonas Taylor (Statham) is an expert sea diver and Naval Captain who aborted his mission and half his crew when he encountered the Meg several years ago. No...

Warner Bros.’ Chinese-American monster flick “The Meg” opened on 3,900 screens on Thursday night earning $4 million.
Starring Jason Statham as a deep-sea diver tasked with killing an enormous shark known as the Megalodon, the film is expected to open to $25 million this weekend. While that’s a weak start for a $150 million blockbuster, “The Meg” was co-financed and co-produced by China Media Capital’s Gravity Pictures, as the film looks to earn bigger numbers in China this weekend with the help of Statham’s co-star Li Bingbing and a story that takes place on China’s Pacific coast.

“Jason Statham fights a shark.” Say the phrase aloud, let the words swirl around in your mouth like a fine wine. Better yet, let’s up the ante a bit: “Jason Statham, he of The Transporter and Crank movies, fights a giant, toothy, prehistoric shark.” There is so much promise in that sentence, so many wonderful expectations inherent in that high-concept idea. You think of the British action-movie star, a bruiser whose muscles have muscles and who resembles nothing so much as a bullet with stubble, and worry that the...

When it comes to beating the summer doldrums, nothing is better than going to the movies. Whether it’s just to spend a few hours in a darkened room with the A/C blasting to find some reprieve from the heat, or it’s just to get lost in the world of big-screen visuals while munching on popcorn, summer movies often provide us with some much-needed escapism, which perfectly sums The Meg up to a T. It’s an action-fueled monster movie that delivers some solid moments of suspense and spectacle, although I do wish the script spent more time diving deeper instead of treading shallow water most of the time.
As far as the plot goes, The Meg follows a team of researchers who work for an international undersea program and dive into uncharted waters (quite literally and slightly figuratively in this instance), where they encounter an unseen monstrosity that attacks their submersible,...

For moviegoers, August is no longer the total disreputable dumping ground it once was. Yet if you want to know whether that phenomenon known as the “August movie” is alive and kicking, look no further than “The Meg.” It’s a big, crass, brainlessly expensive B-movie leftover all dressed up to look like the real deal in blockbuster goods. In other words, it’s a film that has all the August qualities. It takes a cast of flatly “likable” second-tier actors and hitches them to the lure of a special-effects creature that, in theory, will prove to be a crowd-pleasing attraction. More than that, the whole thing feels like a copy of a copy. “The Meg” is “Jaws” on dumbed-down steroids, and proud of it. It’s the sort of movie that people used to go to when they went to movies for the air conditioning.

From its “Oh, God, what was that?” opening to the climactic attack on a crowded beach, “The Meg” dutifully checks off the requisite shark-movie/monster-movie boxes as it clicks along. But because director Jon Turteltaub is more interested in set pieces than in human beings, there’s very little to care about between appearances of the title creature.
But what a creature it is: a prehistoric Megalodon, extinct for 2 million years, that can chomp whales in half makes a worthy adversary. The film makes a convincing case that an underwater research station outfitted with all the latest tech could give this leviathan a fair fight. Between skirmishes, however, there’s some slack pacing over the course of 113 minutes that will leave you longing for the Meg’s return. (The film’s first 30 or 40 minutes offer way too much set-up and not nearly enough shark.)

“You go in the cage, cage goes in the water, you go in the water. Shark’s in the water, our shark.” – Quint
On June 20, 1975 a thriller from a relatively unknown filmmaker was unleashed on unsuspecting theatre goers. Audiences witnessed, mostly from surface water level, the birth of the original Summer Blockbuster, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. People had never seen this type of visceral carnage before in cinemas and subsequently it had a terrifying impact of beach goers that summer. There is something so primal and horrific about the now iconic scene of the dolly zoom on Martin Brody’s shocked face after Alex Kintner is attacked.

On June 20, 1975 a thriller from a relatively unknown filmmaker was unleashed on unsuspecting theatre goers. Audiences witnessed, mostly from surface water level, the birth of the original Summer Blockbuster, Steven Spielberg’s Jaws. WaterTower Music has announced today’s release of the soundtrack to the science fiction action thriller “The Meg,” directed by Jon Turteltaub (the “National Treasure” movies), which will be released in theaters August 10, 2018. The soundtrack features music from the film composed by Harry Gregson-Williams (“The Town,” the “Equalizer” films, the “Shrek” franchise), and will be released on August 3rd, one week before the film is in theaters.
Harry Gregson-Williams is one of Hollywood’s most sought-after composers, whose scores span the spectrum of high-profile projects from action to drama to animation – each infused with the emotional punch and atmospheric intensity that mark his distinctive musical style. The Golden Globe- and Grammy Award-nominated composer offers, “For ‘The Meg,’ I set out to create a memorable recognizable sonic motif which follows the mystery of the great Megalodon—something robust in nature, which acted as a kind of warning call and instilled an...

When “The Meg” debuts on Aug. 10, it will continue a long legacy of shark movies.
The science-fiction film, starring Jason Statham and directed by Jon Turteltaub, follows a group of scientists as they attempt to stop the biggest shark in the world — the Megalodon — from terrorizing a beach. “‘The Meg’ is like ‘Sharknado’ if it had a $150 million budget and a heart,” writer Erich Hoeber recently joked to Variety.
Steven Spielberg is credited with originating the shark movie (and the summer blockbuster at large) with his 1975 classic “Jaws.” The film followed a man-eating shark that hunted beachgoers and thrilled audiences, generating a massive $470 million worldwide.
It would go on to inspire a number of other movies focusing on the sharp-toothed fish, including 1999’s “Deep Blue Sea,” which found moderate critical and commercial success. The horror movie “Open Water” came just a few years after, centering on a couple that gets...

After two decades in the deep waters of development, prehistoric shark actioner “The Meg” is finally ready to swim into the late-summer box office.
Steve Alten, the author of the novel on which the film is based, thought many times over that the project might sink without a ripple. When Alten was 15 in 1975, he became a huge fan of Steven Spielberg’s smash hit “Jaws” — which inspired him to begin exploring the idea of a giant prehistoric shark species somehow surviving in today’s world.
Hollywood has produced plenty of shark movies since “Jaws,” but “Meg” was stuck in development hell for more than two decades. It’s finally being released on Aug. 10, starring Jason Statham, directed by Jon Turteltaub, and written by Dean Georgaris and brothers Jon and Erich Hoeber.
Like “Skyscraper,” which doubled its domestic launch in China, “The Meg” is a part-Chinese production that’s looking to...

August — it’s the January of summer! This is the part of the summer-movie season when studios trot out the properties too offbeat (read: light on explosions) to compete with your typical June and July blockbusters. You know, the time of year when the idea of a big-budget bonanza is a romcom doubling as an international tourism campaign, a self-aware man-vs.-colossal-prehistoric-shark opus or an attempt to turn A.A. Milne’s stories into some sort of meta-i.P. Pooh-verse. Meanwhile, Spike Lee’s back with his best film in years...

A new TV spot has been released for Jason Statham's upcoming giant shark film The Meg. This movie looks so over-the-top and ridiculous that there's no doubt it's going to be a crazy fun film. It's Jason Statham taking on a giant ass shark! What's there not to be excited about!
In the film, a deep-sea submersible—part of an international undersea observation program—has been attacked by a massive creature, previously thought to be extinct, and now lies disabled at the bottom of the deepest trench in the Pacific…with its crew trapped inside. With time running out, expert deep-sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) is recruited by a visionary Chinese oceanographer (Winston Chao), against the wishes of his daughter Suyin (Li Bingbing), to save the crew—and the ocean itself—from this unstoppable threat: a pre-historic 75-foot-long shark known as the Megalodon. What no one could...

"I'm gonna make this thing bleed."
Warner Bros. has released a new international trailer and poster for The Meg, which awesomely centers around Jason Statham fighting a giant-ass shark known as the Megalodon. In real life, Statham is probably the only person in the world that could handle a situation like this.
There's a good amount of new footage in this trailer that gives us a proper set up of the story and a lot more shark chomping action!

Deep sea rescue diver Jonas Taylor (Jason Statham) sees all of his worst nightmares manifest before his very eyes in this new action shot from The Meg.
Coming to us by way of Empire (h/t Bloody Disgusting), this striking and deeply unsettling photo places Taylor directly in front of a 75-foot Megalodon shark, which hasn’t roamed the Earth in almost 2.6 million years. But for Jon Turteltaub’s The Meg, itself a loose adaptation of the eponymous horror-thriller novel from Steve Alten, one particularly aggressive Megalodon somehow managed to escape the jaws of extinction, leaving the door open for a larger-than-life summer movie that’s so big, it makes Jaws seem like small fry by comparison.
As for Jason Statham’s character, he’s a seasoned diver whose previous experience with the prehistoric beast proves indispensable, as it makes him one of the few people on Earth capable of stopping the underwater titan.

Ever since Jaws caused moviegoers to be afraid of going back into the water in 1975, the concept of rampaging sharks has been a staple in the horror, thriller and science fiction genres, often blurring the lines between them. And while the topic of today’s discussion isn’t nearly as over the top as the likes of Sharknado, Sharktopus and Ghost Shark, it sure has been generating its share of online buzz as of late.
We are, of course, talking about The Meg. Consider this one summer’s easiest — if not quickest — sell: It’s Jason Statham, battling a giant shark. Long-in-the-works, would-be blockbuster “The Meg” finally cruises into theaters this summer with an appetite for both blood and destruction. And that’s to say nothing of what the shark wants (which, yes, appears to be much of the same).
At first blush, “The Meg” looks like an unholy — but surely very entertaining — cross between “Deep Blue Sea” (another shark movie set on an exceedingly swanky research facility) and “Jurassic Park” (this particular shark is a prehistoric one, a monster from the past still alive today), a giant-sized “Jaws” for the popcorn cinema crowd. Basically, the perfect summer movie. And yet this one comes with an added edge that seems poised to make it even more wild: Statham’s character and the massive shark have a past together.

Tagline: "Pleased To Eat You." The Meg is a horror feature about the Megalodon. This prehistoric monster roamed seas millions of years ago. It reached lengths of 60 to 70 feet. In The Meg, an underwater research crew is trapped at the bottom of an undersea trench as a Megalodon swims above. This picture, which was co-produced by at least one Chinese company, stars: Bingbing Li (Resident Evil: Retribution), Jason Statham (Crank), Jessica NcNamee and Ruby Rose. The film's first trailer is available here! The story of The Meg was developed from Steve Alten's story, Meg: A Novel of Deep Terror. In the novel, an international observation platform is attacked by a massive creature - the Megalodon! The crew must work together to extract themselves from the ocean floor as ocean pressure builds up and this unstoppable shark looks for its next meal. The Meg has been rated PG-13, for bloody images.

Warner Bros has dropped the first trailer for summer shark pic The Meg. The Jason Statham-starrer is a sci-fi thriller about a prehistoric 75-foot-long predator, the Megalodon, who threatens the lives of a research team trapped underwater — and, yes, the fate of the ocean itself. As far as summer popcorn fare, the tagline says it all: “Chomp On This.”
Jon Turtletaub directs from a screenplay by Dean Georgaris and Jon Hoeber & Erich Hoeber that’s based on the New York Times bestseller by Steve Alten.
The film is eyed to take a bite out of the Chinese box office. It was made with China, is set off the mainland’s coast and co-stars Li Bingbing. Plus, Statham is a big draw at local turnstiles.

Do you like Jason Statham? Do you like giant sharks? Do you like Jason Statham and giant sharks? Well Warner Brothers has your fix. The first full trailer for The Meg is here, and it… actually looks like a lot of fun.
The Meg is directed by Jon Turteltaub (National Treasure and The Sorcerer’s Apprentice). The trailer looks like it’s the exact tone needed to make the official synopsis make sense in your head. Rainn Wilson seems to be perfectly sprinkled in throughout the film for just the right amount of Rainn.
Here’s the trailer you nerds:
Statham stars alongside Li Bing-Bing, Sophia Shuya Cai, Cliff Curtis, Rainn Wilson, Ruby Rose,Winston Chao, Masi Oka , Ólafur Darris Ólafsson, Page Kennedy, and Jessica McNamee.
Here’s the official synopsis:

A giant shark movie is getting the big-budget Hollywood treatment and it shows in the ferocious first trailer for The Meg! Check it out!
There was a time when audiences couldn't get enough of Shark Movies. The Jaws franchise was the first to really set the standard for the genre, but as with most things too much of a good thing can get old quick. After Jaws 1 & 2, the franchise began taking very off-kilter directions, causing the genre to lie dormant for some time. Afterward, Sci-Fi Channel (now Syfy) took hold of the Shark Film genre and ran with it, airing such films as the Mega Shark series and the iconic Sharknado franchise.
However, since movies like The Shallows and 47 Meters Down have come out, the genre has seen a revival. So, naturally, it's time for the genre to get a bit outlandish. The first trailer for Jason Statham's giant shark film,...
