In the landscape of modern filmmaking, there isn’t a substantial amount of directors that have every single one of the stars of Hollywood want to be featured in one of their films, and Christopher Nolan is by far leading that group of filmmakers with his prestigious legacy in the film industry.
While not everyone can work with him in their lives for obvious reasons, there was a time when actor Nicholas Galitzine had a solid chance to be featured in his three-time Oscar-winning film Dunkirk.

After four years, “Black Mirror” is back for Season 6 and considering it’s the premiere destination for storytelling that comes swinging at big tech, it was only a matter of time before it took aim at the streaming industry. Season 6 comes out of the gate hitting directly at Netflix — the streamer in which it airs — with the arrival of the Streamberry app in the hyper-meta episode “Joan Is Awful.” And hoo boy, does Streamberry shake up the current understanding of the “Black Mirror” universe.
Not least of all because the Streamberry homepage is jam-packed with familiar titles that reference episodes from every season of “Black Mirror.” Some of the shots go by in a hurry, and not everyone has time to pause (over and over again) to obsess over the details, so we’ve put together a comprehensive guide to all the Easter Eggs, callbacks and references you’ll find in the Streamberry lineup.

This story about “Great Expectations” hair and makeup artist Niamh Morrison first appeared in the Limited Series / TV Movies issue of TheWrap’s awards magazine.
Miss Havisham is one of the most iconic characters in English literature. The wealthy recluse from Charles Dickens’ “Great Expectations” is so well known, she has become shorthand for heartbreak, revenge and being trapped in time — a person fossilized while still drawing breath. Her story — abandoned at the altar, she retreats to her mansion, forever dressed in her wedding gown — has been reimagined more than a dozen times on the big and small screens.

Olivia Colman is primed for another healthy year in terms of awards as she lines up a return to the Emmys with the latest adaptation of Charles Dickens‘ seminal work “Great Expectations.”
This FX on Hulu limited series, which was created by “Peaky Blinders” boss Steven Knight, follows Fionn Whitehead‘s Pip — an orphan who works as a blacksmith’s apprentice before receiving a sudden windfall from an unknown benefactor. He then travels to London and enters high society. Colman steals the show in the short but sharp role of Miss Havisham, the spurned, wealthy spinster who was left at the altar on her own wedding day. Full of bitter resentment, she insists on wearing her cob-webbed wedding dress for the rest of her life and schemes to get Pip’s heart broken.

“What We Do in the Shadows” star Matt Berry is in talks to join Warner Bros.’ live-action adaptation of the hit video game “Minecraft,” set to be released in spring 2025.
Details on the film’s plot and Berry’s role remain secret. Developed by Swedish game designer Markus “Notch” Persson and released in 2011, “Minecraft” is an open-ended sandbox game in which players can mine resources and craft items, using them to create new structures and fight off hostile creatures.
More than a decade later, “Minecraft” remains one of the most popular and lucrative video games on the market, with fans creating community servers and conventions to share their creations. Microsoft purchased the game and its dev company Mojang for $2.5 billion and has turned it into a multimedia franchise with spinoff games and merchandise.

There are no bad episodes of Inside No. 9 – Steven Pemberton and Reece Shearsmith’s brilliantly inventive anthology show telling half-hour stories set in single locations – which is one problem when choosing favourites. Another is that every single ranking seems to be topped by the same episode – series two, episode two, ‘The 12 Days Of Christine’. You’ll get no argument there – that episode is a masterpiece blending comedy, spookiness, drama and an emotional final act revelation that brings the whole thing together. But it does rather overshadow the other 43 episodes so far aired, many of which are also excellent and worthy of more notice.
As Inside No. 9 returns for the rest of series eight, we present: 15 of its best Inside No. 9 episodes that are *not* ‘The 12 Days of Christine’.

Literature’s all-time jilted spinster, Miss Havisham, has been played by Martita Hunt, Anne Bancroft, Gillian Anderson and Helena Bonham Carter while also inspiring other memorable screen personalities, most notably “Sunset Boulevard’s” Norma Desmond (Gloria Swanson). In “Peaky Blinders” showrunner Steven Knight’s adaptation of “Great Expectations,” Olivia Colman dons the tattered veil of the iconic character to whom unwitting orphan Philip “Pip” Pirrip (Fionn Whitehead) turns as he pursues social repute in Victorian England.
Though Knight’s amendments to Charles Dickens’ source material have gotten a mixed response, the show continues to draw praise for its production value. Costume designer Verity Hawkes, whose credits include “Snatch,” “Inkheart” and “Black Mirror,” recently gave an interview to IndieWire’s Sarah Shachat in which she detailed her approach to the unenviable task of distinguishing Knight’s rendition of the character from more than a dozen others.

Steven Knight, the creator of the FX on Hulu limited series “Great Expectations,” was hit with sharp criticism when the show premiered March 26. Critics blasted the Oscar-nominated screenwriter of “Dirty Pretty Things” (2002) for taking liberties with Charles Dickens‘ classic, and he responded in a recent interview Radio Times.
“I would say it’s like there’s this beautiful mountain, which is the novel, it’s a beautiful thing, it’s fantastic,” Knight said. “It will endure long after we’re all gone. Then someone sets up an easel and does an impressionistic painting of the mountain. It’s not saying ‘This is the mountain,’ it’s saying ‘This is my version. This is my impression of what this mountain is.’ I think that’s exactly what this process is. And I think if you sat down and said, ‘Okay, I’m gonna paint the mountain’ and at the end it looks exactly like the mountain,...

“If you want to make a TV drama about opium smokers, sadomasochists and imperial slavery in the 19th century, then write your own,” whines The Daily Mail‘s Peter Hitchens about Steven Knight’s new Great Expectations adaptation, presumably forgetting that in 2017, Knight did exactly that in 8-part Gothic Regency thriller Taboo.
Knight’s previous series starring Tom Hardy, bleeds into his take on Charles Dickens’ class and snobbery novel, which loses the comedy and grimes up the characters with the addition of adult content. Great Expectations returns to Knight’s constant theme of social mobility, moving away from ones roots, and the upper classes being mad, evil bastards, as explored in six series of Peaky Blinders.
Here’s the impressive cast amassed for this six-part drama.

Warning: This review contains spoilers from the first two episodes of Great Expectations.
There have been plenty of good, and even great, adaptations of the Charles Dickens classic Great Expectations.
Unfortunately, this is not one of them.
Most recently, Mike Newell directed a film version in 2012 starring Ralph Fiennes and Helena Bonham Carter.
BBC, one of the production companies behind this version (along with FX), produced a three-part miniseries in 2011-2012 starring Douglas Booth, Ray Winstone, and Gillian Anderson.
The most famous adaptation this side of the pond is probably Alfonso Cuarón's modern version in 1998, starring Ethan Hawke, Gwyneth Paltrow, and Anne Bancroft.
News of Steven Knight's version was exciting, particularly with the announcement of Olivia Colman as Miss Havisham.
If you're going to remake something that has been adapted so many times, you have to approach it from a new vantage point.

Divisive is a slightly loaded word. Why would you say it’d be divisive?” wonders Fionn Whitehead, with a furrowed brow. The not-very-online star of Dunkirk hasn’t seen much of the reaction to the BBC’s new adaptation of Great Expectations, in which he plays a steely, glowering Pip. Peaky Blinders showrunner Steven Knight has added spanking, swearing, opium-smoking and references to colonialism to Dickens’s classic coming-of-age tale, and, in the lead-up to tonight’s first episode, the “What the Dickens!” headlines have come thick and fast. “David Copperfield battling zombies or Oliver Twist as a trans teen... what next from the BBC?” asks one pearl-clutcher. Why do I say it might be divisive? Well, I venture... people might have strong feelings. Love. Hate. Not much in the middle. “I hope that’s the case,” he muses, as we talk in the BBC’s offices. “It’s good for people to be challenged.

In the very first scene of Hulu’s Great Expectations, a distraught and disheveled Pip (Fionn Whitehead) ties one end of a rope to a bridge, tightens the other around his neck, and leaps. What happens next won’t be revealed until much later in the six-hour miniseries, but what’s clear right away is the message being sent: This isn’t Great Expectations as you remember it.
This is a Great Expectations that’s willing to get dirty, to push the envelope, to take ample liberties with the source material beloved (or at the very least, tolerated in school) by millions. There’s more sex, more violence, more drugs. But with too little in the way of humanity, insight or entertainment to offer alongside them, what could have been a daring spin on a classic is transformed instead into a dreary slog.

It’s 162 years old, but Charles Dickens’ masterpiece Great Expectations “has never been more relevant,” according to Peaky Blinders creator Steven Knight. His six-part adaptation of the Victorian novel for FX and Hulu takes the story in unexpected directions as it follows the journey of orphan Pip (Fionn Whitehead), a working-class lad who loses his way as he chases wealth and status. Sex, opium, and attempted suicide crop up. “Dickens wasn’t able to write about certain things because they were considered to be not territory for fiction,” says Knight. “He can never go all the way into those dark places. So that’s what I tried to do.” Miya Mizuno/FX Pip also becomes a plaything to one of the author’s most unforgettable and bizarre characters, Miss Havisham, portrayed by the great Olivia Colman. The long-ago jilted bride still wears her dilapidated wedding gown as she grooms adopted...

When it comes to Dickens adaptations, it helps to temper your expectations. The revered Victorian writer is perhaps the most frequently adapted novelist in history – but to what end? The results are wildly inconsistent: for every The Personal History of David Copperfield (2019) or Bleak House (2005), there are a dozen insipid Christmas Carols, or a handful of regrettable Oliver Twists. The BBC are once more throwing their (old-fashioned bowler) hat into the ring with a new six-episode screen version of Great Expectations. But how many more hats can this particular ring withstand?
Starring Dunkirk’s Fionn Whitehead as Pip, Shalom Brune-Franklin (Line of Duty) as Estella, and Oliva Colman as Miss Havisham, the new BBC series is a retelling of Dickens’s rags-to-riches bildungsroman – roughed up a bit with some distinctly modern sex and violence. Peaky Blinders scribe Steven Knight wrote the adaptation, the latest in a long line of Great Expectations adaptations for the screen.

During a recent press conference in support of FX’s riveting six-part Great Expectations limited series, Oscar winner Olivia Colman (The Favourite) admitted she’s never read Charles Dickens’ classic novel. Despite that, Colman found being offered the opportunity to play the mysterious and manipulative Miss Havisham too enticing to pass up.
“I’d seen adaptations on the telly before, so I knew roughly who she was and everything,” explained Colman. “I thought ‘Oh, she sounds great. I’d love to get my teeth into her.’”
Colman’s been keeping incredibly busy with starring roles in Joyride, The Lost Daughter, and Empire of Light. The latter film earned the Oscar winner her third Oscar nomination. Miss Havisham is one of the most indelible characters in the English-language literary canon. Written by Charles Dickens to be outfitted, each day, in the wedding finery that serves as a decaying reminder that she was spurned at the altar, she’s a bundle of resentments tied together in white lace.
And, as played by Olivia Colman, she’s the action of the new “Great Expectations” limited series — so much so that much of the rest of the densely plotty story seems like biding time between her appearances. Written by Steven Knight and co-produced by the BBC and FX, this “Great Expectations” is dimly lit and grimly violent, with the chaos and sudden bursts of enmity of Dickensian England brought to the fore. But only Miss Havisham pops off the screen, making this an adaptation lacking in a certain balance.

The six-part adaptation of the classic Charles Dickens novel stars Fionn Whitehead as Pip, Shalom Brune-Franklin as Estella and Oscar and Emmy winner Olivia Colman as Miss Havisham. “When I was young, I was blinded by love,” we see Colman’s cold-hearted Miss Havisham declare with animosity. “Now look at what remains of me.” The series tells the coming-of-age story of Pip, an orphan who yearns for a greater life, until a twist of fate and a mysterious benefactor opens a dark world of possibilities. The talent behind FX and BBC series “Great Expectations,” “Peaky Blinders” creator Steven Knight’s adaptation of Charles Dickens’ literary masterpiece, has spoken about it ahead of its premiere.
“Great Expectations” is the coming-of-age story of Pip, an orphan who yearns for a greater lot in life, until a twist of fate and the evil machinations of the mysterious and eccentric Miss Havisham shows him a dark world of possibilities. Under the great expectations placed upon him, Pip will have to work out the true cost of this new world and whether it will truly make him the man he wishes to be. A critique of the class system, Dickens’ novel was published in 1861 after first releasing it in a series of weekly chapters beginning in December 1860.

During a virtual press conference Tuesday morning to promote the lavish new FX Productions/BBC adaptation of the Charles Dickens classic “Great Expectations,” Oscar and Emmy winner Olivia Colman talked about how she didn’t begin acting until her mid-teens and the fact that being able to work consistently in the profession rescued her from a life of perpetual mediocrity.
“I was 16 when I did my first play at school, which was the first time I was able to do anything because I was so rubbish at school,” admitted Colman, who plays the iconic role of Miss Havisham in the hotly-anticipated limited six-part rendition of the Dicken novel from “Peaky Blinders” creator-showrunner Steven Knight that streams exclusively over Hulu in the United States and BBC One in the UK beginning with a pair of episodes on March 26. “It was a few years before I realized I could really be an...

What if Emily Bronte, the author of “Wuthering Heights” and painfully shy daughter of a parson, secretly had a steamy love affair with her father’s assistant? Could have happened, right?
Well, no, but the highly imaginative historical drama Emily posits such a hidden romance. Emily is less a biography than a fantasy of the life the director might have wished the author had, something more possible now than then.
Emily is the latest in a series of historical dramas that posit a secret love life for a famous unmarried female 19th century author. While such what-if romances might be fun, this one goes pretty far from the factual, in the romance imagined and other acts of rebellious behavior. However, where the film has more depth is in its other aspect, a speculative inner progression from shy, reclusive...

Emily begins and ends with Emily Brontë on her deathbed. Is it heartbreak that led to her early death at the age of 30 or something less dramatic? Her death’s attributed to tuberculosis (the same disease that took her siblings), but first-time feature film writer/director Frances O’Connor paints such a gorgeous picture of a life full of tragedy, romance, betrayal, and longing that she makes it possible to believe Emily succumbed to something more mysterious and befitting of the author of Wuthering Heights.
Brontë siblings Emily (Emma Mackey), Charlotte (Alexandra Dowling), Anne (Amelia Gething), and Branwell (Fionn Whitehead) are artistically inclined, with Branwell – the sole male – the free-spirited, wild child of the group. They all share an ability and desire to write.
Of the siblings, Branwell and Emily’s relationship proves the most interesting in O’Connor’s directorial debut. Emily dearly loves her impulsive brother, and both push...

Frances O’Connor’s Emily, her directorial debut, takes a familiar literary biography and garnishes it with the right kind of creative liberties — the vibrant, suggestive kind. It’s the story of Emily Brontë, author of Wuthering Heights, younger sister to Charlotte, author of Jane Eyre and Villette. Emily isn’t a straight biopic but, at its best, a suggestive and enjoyable exploration of a young, imaginative mind and its troubles — Emily is, from the start of the movie, a woman brushing up against the limits of decorum, increasingly so as the myth-building,...

Great Expectations is Dickens' thirteenth novel and his last finished work, published in 1861. There’s a practice known as bibliomancy, where readers will open the Bible to a random page in the hopes that the passage they encounter will provide a needed answer to a dilemma. In Mike Leigh’s “Career Girls,” the collegiate heroines practice their own version, called “Miss Brontë, Miss Brontë,” wherein they ask a question and then open “Wuthering Heights” in search of counsel.
How the powerful and provocative “Wuthering Heights” came to be the single novel produced by a relatively sheltered woman who died at the age of 30 is the subject of “Emily,” a powerful debut feature from actor and filmmaker Frances O’Connor. Craftily combining fact, fiction and conjecture, O’Connor captures the inner life of Emily Brontë, a writer presented here as carrying within her the same wind and storms that she immortalized on paper.
