Atlanta’s Lil Baby’s hunger is so potent it’s like his tapeworms have tapeworms. The former dope boy hustled his way from scrappy mixtape phenom to venerable Grammy winner. The urgency in his lithe delivery makes every one of his songs — even the loose, turn-up joints — feel like a motivational come-up credo. Amid all the hedonism of 2018‘s “Drip Too Hard,” there’s a relentless and energizing focus on nonstop grinding. And 2020’s “The Bigger Picture,” which addressed police brutality in the wake of the brutal murder of George Floyd,...

YouTube has again turned to big-name entertainment personalities to anchor its latest slate of ad-supported originals.
At its Brandcast Delivered event for advertisers Tuesday, YouTube announced an unscripted series with Will Smith following his latest fitness journey and a new docuseries with Alicia Keys premiering this summer.
The video giant also announced the third and final season of comedy “Liza on Demand,” starring popular comedian and YouTube creator Liza Koshy — marking the last of YouTube’s scripted originals, after phasing them out starting in 2019; “Ice Cold,” a docuseries produced by hip-hop trio Migos exploring issues around racial inequity; and a new special celebrating Asian and Pacific Islander culture from executive producers including LeBron James and Michelle Kwan.
The YouTube Originals strategy remains the same: They’re projects built around personalities and top YouTube creators designed to draw a large audience, as well as specials to support specific causes, said YouTube chief business officer Robert Kyncl.

“Supervillain: The Making of Tekashi 6ix9ine” has its share of surprises. Karam Gill’s three-part series charts the perpetual rise and fall of one of the music world’s largest antagonists, the process by which Brooklyn-born and -raised Daniel Hernandez slowly transformed himself into rapper and social media archenemy Tekashi 6ix9ine.
Amidst the blend of interviews and archival footage, each episode takes a few well-timed journeys into a dreamlike abstract void. Dubbed in onscreen text as “Elements of a Supervillain,” each of these interstitials takes a part of the Tekashi lore and brings it to an artistic operating table of sorts. With a synthetic Tekashi figure in the center of the frame, disembodied white-gloved hands manipulate and style him as part of a hypnotic, sometimes nightmareish makeover.
“Karam said, ‘Think “Apple meets Kanye’s house.”‘ And I think that was deliberately to contrast with the gritty nature of doing found footage documentary.

Tekashi 6ix9ine, born Daniel Hernandez, is a colorful and somewhat vile character. A man who got famous through gang affiliation, a gang that he later ratted out in court, and controversial social media videos.
He’s a man who started getting attention after creating his own clothing with the word ‘HIV’ on it, plead guilty to the use of a child in a sexual performance after posting a video that showed the alleged assault of a 13-year old girl, beat his girlfriend and mother of his daughter, Sara Molina, and plead guilt to nine felony charges including racketeering conspiracy, weapons possession and armed robbery, as well as the aforementioned turning on the Nine Trey Gangsta Blood gang that helped get him famous.

In trying to explain the man and phenomenon that is Tekashi 6ix9ine, Showtime’s new docuseries does its best to embody him.
“Supervillain: The Making of Tekashi 6ix9ine,” directed by Karam Gill, alternates between self-consciously shaggy found footage and slick, stylized interludes. Like its subject, “Supervillain” depends on social media to build itself up. It stitches together years of Instagram videos to paint its portrait of a man who deliberately transformed himself into rap’s most chaotic antagonist, with his rise reflected in his ballooning follower numbers. It interviews people from his inner circle, observers of his increasingly hyperbolic life and, sporadically, Tekashi 6x9ine himself in audio clips from the suburban safehouse he’s most recently called home. Throughout its three episodes — titled “Identity,” “Power” and “Truth” — the series interrupts itself for flashy stop motion explainers in which narrator Giancarlo Esposito breaks down the crucial elements that make a true supervillain,...

Either Tekashi 6ix9ine knows exactly what he’s doing, or this was all a happy accident. We’re banking on the fact that the young emcee/professional instigator/convicted felon is laughing all the way to the bank.
“F— being a superhero, I wanna be a villain,” 6ix9ine says in a teaser trailer for Showtime docuseries “Supervillain: The Making of Tekashi 6ix9ine.”
Pretty much the rest of the teaser trailer, which dropped on Friday, is made of up extremely unflattering media quotes about the rapper (real name Daniel Hernandez).
Watch the teaser trailer via the video above.
“Supervillain” is centered on an interview with Hernandez following his early release from prison this spring. He was locked up after pleading guilty to armed robbery charges and conspiracy to commit murder.

Showtime has released the first trailer for “Supervillain,” a revealing docuseries about the rise of provocative young rapper Tekashi 6ix9ine.
Directed by Karam Gill, the three-episode docuseries will examine how 6ix9ine manufactured his own cult celebrity status through his mastery of social media and purposely stirring up controversy. Gill conducted an exclusive interview with 6ix9ine after the rapper was released from prison earlier this year.
The docuseries will follow how Daniel Hernandez, originally working as a deli clerk in New York City, transformed into 6ix9ine, the tattooed, rainbow-haired viral rapper. He boasts more than 2.6 billion streams, 15 hits on the top music charts and collaborations with artists like Nicki Minaj, Kanye West, Young Thug, Lil Baby and more. Not only is he a rapper, however, 6ix9ine is an internet sensation who has mastered turning his outlandish digital presence into an effective marketing tactic for his rap persona.

Everyone knows a few things about the long-standing hip-hop rivalry pitting West Coast vs. East Coast, but what about the West Coast vs. itself?
In the informative and somewhat hagiographic documentary G Funk, first-time director Karam Gill explores both the origins of the most essential trend in West Coast rap and how one of its foremost creators had his career temporarily sidetracked at the hands of a despotic and ruthless music executive. It’s a rags-to-riches (or is that gin-to-juice?) tale of fame, misfortune and fortune centered around producer Warren G, the late, great rapper/singer Nate Dogg and the still-going-strong Snoop...
