Donovan Colton
- Composer
Donovan Colton is a film and game composer, record producer, musician, and audio engineer from Park City, Utah.
He started taking piano and guitar lessons at the age of five, then started self teaching bass and drums at ages ten and twelve, all while studying music theory extensively. At age thirteen, he started to write and record his own music, self teaching from YouTube videos on software in his basement.
Donovan completed his first prog-rock album at the age of fifteen, and his second one year later. In 2017, at age twenty, he started to get more serious, in order to turn his love for making music into a career. He self produced a number of prog-rock, metal, and hardcore albums, while also breaking into alternative hip-hop/rap. To this day, Donovan has self produced seventeen albums.
In May, 2018, Donovan found the YouTube channels of Christian Henson and Tom Holkenborg (aka Junkie XL), and decided to put his dream of becoming a media composer into action. Self teaching from YouTube videos, he learned how to compose for film and games using orchestra and sound design. He composed five albums in the time span of a year and a half. In late 2019, he composed his first full length feature film, City of Salt.
Donovan has a very wide range of genres. From purely orchestral, to electronic, rock and metal, hip-hop, alternative, etc. His influences include artists and composers such as Hans Zimmer, Tom Holkenborg, John Powell, Koji Kondo, Joe Hisaishi, Gareth Coker, Anomalie, Periphery, and many more.
