Spoilers for Secret Invasion. Consider yourself warned. Marvel’s Secret Invasion series on Disney+ concluded earlier this week, but the season finale seems to have left fans underwhelmed. Ali Selim, who directed all six episodes of the series, spoke with Variety about the mixed reviews Secret Invasion has received.
“Oh, I don’t read reviews,” Ali Selim said. “With all due respect. For me, I view all the storytelling work I do as a dialogue with an audience. When the show is finished and put up on the screen, that’s my half of the dialogue. And the audience then starts their half of the response to it. I think that’s valuable, but I don’t know. I don’t know how to answer the question.“
Selim continued, “I don’t feel bad about mixed reviews. If you had unanimously good reviews, every movie would gross $10 billion, trillion dollars,...

In the finale of Secret Invasion, Emilia Clarke’s G’iah inherited a litany of MCU character superpowers, as Gravik’s (Kingsley Ben-Adir) plan to become a God-like Skrull backfired, resulting in his death. With G’iah now being seemingly invincible, director Ali Selim is opening up about how the choice and the G’iah-Gravik super-powered fight came to be.
“It starts with Kevin Feige saying, ‘Any and all superpowers are fair game. Have fun,’ and then we storyboarded it. We would be like, ‘What are the superpowers that would happen next?'” Selim tells The Hollywood Reporter. “And then we would go through stunts and understand what superpowers can happen next and what can’t, just because of the physical positioning of the actors. And then, with VFX, some things just couldn’t work because they looked funny shifting from this to that in an instant.”

Olivia Colman and Emilia Clarke quickly became MCU standouts in the Disney+ limited series “Secret Invasion,” but they could be among the many new characters that don’t show up again for a while (or ever). Even if that’s the case, “Secret Invasion” director Ali Selim is Ok with it, saying he feels like their arcs came to satisfying conclusions in the show.
Colman and Clarke played Sonya Falsworth and G’iah respectively, two brand new characters in the MCU. Sonya is effectively the British version of Nick Fury, with eyes everywhere, and ears everywhere else. Gi’ah, on the other hand, is Talos’ (Ben Mendelsohn) daughter, grown up since we first saw her in “Captain Marvel.”
Both women are huge pieces of Fury’s eventual victory over rebel Skrull leader Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir). In the final moments of the finale, it appears the duo may continue working together,...

Note: Spoilers ahead for the “Secret Invasion” season finale on Disney+
“Secret Invasion” isn’t so secret anymore, with the finale dropping on Wednesday on Disney+. And, while it doesn’t necessarily set up a ton of stuff for the future of the MCU — at least not explicitly — there were a few things that director Ali Selim was told to include.
In the finale, we see Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) get almost fully back to his old self, saving the president — and in turn, the world — with the help of a small, but crafty team. It’s a grueling fight, but they do manage to stop Gravik and release the humans that the Skrulls had kidnapped and simmed.
All that accomplished, Fury headed back up to space, which is presumably where we’ll find him when “The Marvels” hits theaters in November. And that was one of just two...

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the finale of Marvel’s Secret Invasion.
Marvel’s Secret Invasion wrapped up on Wednesday, though little — if anything — is actually resolved. In fact, it appears that Earth might just be worse off than it was before Nick Fury came back from space to save the day.
This is your last warning to stop now if you don’t want to be spoiled on the finale of Secret Invasion.
Episode 6, titled “Home,” begins right where the previous episode left off. Gravik (Kingsley Ben-Adir) had given Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) an ultimatum: Bring him The Harvest (aka a vial containing the DNA of every superhero/villain who was at the Battle for Earth in Avengers: Endgame) or he will continue on his quest to start World War III. Gravik has devised a plan to have his spy Raava, who is currently impersonating Rhodey (Don Cheadle...

“Trust no one.” That bit of advice is the cornerstone of every paranoid thriller, whether it’s The X-Files, 70s classics like Three Days of the Condor, or recent entries such as Get Out.
As a show about shape-shifting aliens, Secret Invasion should be able to excel at “trust no one” better than any of its predecessors. Nearly anyone can be a Skrull, even Tony Stark’s best friend Rhodey, a mainstay of the MCU since its beginning (albeit played by different actors).
And yet, four episodes in, Secret Invasion’s biggest mystery is about the nature of the show itself. Is this a thriller about secret agent Nick Fury uncovering a vast conspiracy? Is this a commentary about the insiders and outsiders in the American experiment? Is this a show about spies battling aliens?

Director Ali Selim, who has directed the spy-thriller-espionage series ‘Secret Invasion’, has said the show has a darker and more grounded tone as opposed to other MCU offerings. However, the director has said that one of the things which helped in enhancing that tone was the ongoing Russia-Ukraine war and the massive tensions between US and Russia.
According to The Hollywood Reporter: “It’s coincidence, serendipity, danger and all of the above. But the thing that I like about it is that this show is meant to be real and grounded,” Selim said.
“The stakes are Earth and humanity, as opposed to something off in outer space that’s more abstract or fictional. So the real-life conflict between Russia and the U.S. only helps to make this story feel more real’.”

Secret Invasion director Ali Selim may have been directing the latest chapter of the ongoing Marvel Cinematic Universe, but he merely focused on the story in front of him. Yes, he knew he’d have to pass the Nick Fury baton to Nia DaCosta’s upcoming film, The Marvels, but the handoff never distracted from the story he was telling involving an aging Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) and his struggle to stop a Skrull rebellion that he’s responsible for to some degree.
“They’re not protracted conversations [with The Marvels team]. It’s just simply, ‘Where do you need him? You need him here? Great.’ And then we write into that. So that kind of stuff is very simple because it’s all above my pay grade,” Selim tells The Hollywood Reporter.

Warning: Spoilers for Episodes 1 and 2 of Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” below.
“Secret Invasion” director Ali Selim praised Samuel L. Jackson and Don Cheadle for their work in the restaurant scene in Episode 2 of the Disney+ series, in which James Rhodes confronts Nick Fury about the explosion in Moscow at the end of Episode 1.
“Don Cheadle and Sam Jackson had wanted to work together for years and never had and they had a meaty lengthy scene together,” he told TheWrap. “That was one of the highlights of my career just to watch them work.”
During a press conference earlier this month, Cheadle teased that Rhodey is more of a “political animal” than fans have seen in the past.
“He’s been more of a military man, but now he’s sort of, in some ways, a right hand of the president and this special envoy, in that regard,” he explained at the time.

Spoiler Alert: This story discusses plot developments in Episode 2 of Marvel Studios’ “Secret Invasion,” currently streaming on Disney+.
Samuel L. Jackson has played the super spy Nick Fury in 11 movies for Marvel Studios. Sometimes, he’s appeared in only a brief cameo; other times, he’s been the second or third lead in a movie with “Captain” in the title. In every appearance, Jackson exudes preternatural calm and cunning as one of the most formidable, non-superpowered humans in the Marvel Cinematic Universe. But it wasn’t until the actor’s first foray as the lead in an MCU project — the Disney+ series “Secret Invasion” — that Marvel has really addressed the fact that Nick Fury is also a Black man who grew up in America.
“We very seldom deal with Nick Fury in that way,” Jackson says.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from Episode 2 of Marvel’s Secret Invasion.
Nick Fury appears to have lost most of his allies after Episode 2 of Marvel’s Secret Invasion.
The episode opens moments after the attack on Moscow, quickly devolving into a messy fight between Talos and Fury once the latter learns that there are far more Skrull on Earth than he thought. Talos reveals that, when Fury and Captain Marvel didn’t pull through with their promise to find the Skrull a new home, he summoned the remainder of the species to Earth. At this point, he has no idea how many Skrull are inhabiting the planet, but his guess is in the millions.
Frustrated, Fury turns to James “Rhodey” Rhodes (Don Cheadle) for help. Rhodey has just arrived in Russia as a liaison to the U.S. to try to clean up the mess caused by Gravik and his rebel faction,...

When we first meet Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) again in Marvel’s new Disney+ streaming series, Secret Invasion, he’s a different man than when we last saw him.
Dressed in grubby street clothes as opposed to his usual sleek black tactical gear, his eyepatch missing, his beard grown out and his posture a bit slumped, the usually unflappable former head of S.H.I.E.L.D. finally seems old. Almost defeated. But that’s what years of protecting the Earth from menaces both homegrown and otherworldly will do to you, right?
“Nick Fury [is] a human being, not a superhero,” says director Ali Selim, who helms all six episodes of Secret Invasion, starting with today’s (June 21) premiere. “He returns to Earth and puts his feet on the ground…he’s aging, which is interesting to me, gaining wisdom, losing a step, finding purpose within a world that is changing.

If the first episode of Kyle Bradstreet’s Secret Invasion has taught us anything, it’s to trust no one. With shocking Skrull reveals and even more shocking deaths, the six-episode series got off to a flying start as a loose adaptation of the 2008 comic series and a long-awaited standalone story for Samuel L. Jackson’s Nick Fury.
Hopefully taking some of the secrets out of Secret Invasion, fans are hoping to find out more about Nicholas J. Fury. It took the Marvel Cinematic Universe 11 years to tell us how Fury ended up with his signature eyepatch in Captain Marvel, and with a convenient 30-year gap between that adventure and the events of Secret Invasion, there are plenty of gaps to fill in – even with him being a pile of dust for five of them.

The Disney+ series “Secret Invasion” has come under fire for its opening sequence, which uses entirely AI-generated art at a time when fear over artificial intelligence is on the rise.
Filled with morphing green imagery, the introductory sequence was designed by Method Studios and is meant to tie into the mysterious themes of the show. The series heavily features the Skrulls, a race of extraterrestrial shapeshifters whose talent for blending in means that anyone may be a threat.
“When we reached out to the AI vendors, that was part of it — it just came right out of the shape-shifting, Skrull world identity, you know? ‘Who did this? Who is this?’” director and executive producer Ali Selim told Polygon about the decision to use AI. Samuel L. Jackson says he’s been well aware of the growing role and impact of AI in Hollywood, which is why he doesn’t sign contracts that let projects use his likeness “in perpetuity.”
In a recent interview with Rolling Stone, the Secret Invasion star and recent Tony nominee opened up about his support for the writers strike, why Secret Invasion wasn’t exactly the thing he was pulling for in the MCU and working with Brie Larson, “a stronger person than people give her credit for” amid online harassment from “incel dudes who hate strong women.”
During the conversation, Jackson also opened up about the SAG-AFTRA negotiations and the role of AI in Hollywood, noting that it was a topic he had already been thinking about since his Star Wars prequel days. “People just started worrying about that? I asked about that a long time ago.

Marvel is back on the small screen with their latest effort, the Disney+ mini-series Secret Invasion. It’s nice to see the great Samuel L. Jackson take center stage, giving Nick Fury a chance to shine. The six-episode series explores a different dynamic. As opposed to flashy superheroes flying around, this is a grounded take on these characters. It puts focus on Fury and Talos as they attempt to stop the infiltration of Skrulls. The series stars Jackson, Ben Mendelsohn, Cobie Smulders, Olivia Colman, Emilia Clarke, Kingsley Ben-Adir, and more.

Who can you trust? That’s the central question of Secret Invasion, the latest MCU tv series on Disney Plus. Of course, Secret Invasion showrunner Kyle Bradstreet intends that question to be directed toward the characters in the show. After all, when super-spy Nick Fury learns about a terrorist cell of shape-shifting Skrulls working to conquer the earth, no one can trust their eyes. But when the series’ first episode released this morning, another type of deception upset viewers.
After a shocking cold open, Secret Invasion episode one goes into the type of opening credit sequence that we’ve grown accustomed to during the era of peak tv. Impressionistic images of humans in cities such as London and Moscow melt away into green-skinned Skrulls, while Kris Bowers’ haunting score plays. At first glance, the opening credit sequence brings a surprising amount of artistry to the sci-fi series.
Of course, it’s all a lie.

Warning: Spoilers for Episode 1 of Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” below.
While the crowd scene at the end of the first episode of Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” was challenging to create, director Ali Selim didn’t find it to be as complicated as the show’s more intimate scenes between two actors.
“I think everything about filmmaking is challenging every step of the way, every decision you make, every bomb you have to build. Everything is a challenge because you’re taking a blank slate and filling it with a story. You look at that end scene with the explosions, it was massive and it took days to storyboard and plan and execute,” he told TheWrap. “But ultimately, I think it was simpler than some two-hander scene with two people sitting at a table that relies on this very elusive idea of emotional truth.”

Marvel’s Secret Invasion is already causing a commotion on social media, though not for reasons that the studio may have hoped.
The series, which debuted on Wednesday with just one episode, has touched a sore spot after director Ali Selim confirmed to Polygon that the opening credits were generated by artificial intelligence. Designed by Method Studios, Selim said he thought that the idea of using AI for the opening credits fit into the themes of the show.
“When we reached out to the AI vendors, that was part of it — it just came right out of the shape-shifting, Skrull world identity, you know? Who did this? Who is this?” he said, adding that he doesn’t “really understand” how the artificial intelligence works, though it piqued his interest.
Of the process, he explained: “We would talk to them about ideas and themes and words, and then the computer would go off and do something.

Of the process, he explained: “We would talk to them about ideas and themes and words, and then the computer would go off and do something.

Spoiler Alert! This post contains details from the first episode of the Disney+ series Secret Invasion.
Nick Fury has finally returned to Earth.
The former Director of S.H.I.E.L.D. and founder of the Avengers, played by Samuel L. Jackson, made a significant return to the Marvel Cinematic Universe on Wednesday with the premiere of Secret Invasion on Disney+. For the past several years, Fury has been largely absent from the MCU, save for a few cameos. Audiences last saw him in the post-credit scene for Spider-Man: Far From Home, where he was lounging on a spaceship that appeared to be mostly manned by Skrull.
Now, rather than working with the Skrull, Fury is going up against them after a rebel faction has begun to try to take over Earth.

Marvel’s “Secret Invasion” is causing a stir on social media after one of the series’ executive producers, Ali Selim, confirmed to Polygon that artificial intelligence was used to create the series’ opening credits sequence. Selim explained the decision to use AI felt right given the plot of “Secret Invasion,” which follows Nick Fury (Samuel L. Jackson) as he uncovers shape-shifting Skrulls who have gained positions of power across the Earth by appearing as human world leaders. The opening credits, designed by Method Studios, is a montage of moving paintings that depict the Skrulls’ invasion of Earth.
“When we reached out to the AI vendors, that was part of it — it just came right out of the shape-shifting, Skrull world identity, you know? Who did this? Who is this?” Selim said, while also admitting he doesn’t “really understand” how AI works.
