For most of Hollywood’s history, the romantic comedy genre has been dominated by straight, heteronormative storytelling that caters to the most simplistic common denominator in society. Rom-coms are often popcorn flicks that create a fantasy between a man and a woman that isn’t hard to understand, yet they rarely make people think about deeper themes or diverse representations.
Enter the LGBTQ+ rom-com. As progressive thinking has become more accepted, filmmakers, studios, and distributors have gotten more comfortable with giving queer people a vision for their own lives with stories that look a little more like their own. LGBTQ+ rom-coms often give non-straight identifying people a chance to feel normal and loved, and at other times they are the same sappy happenstance stories that their straight counterparts are famous for. Either way, LGBTQ+ rom-coms are very much in vogue. Here are the best ones you need to watch right now!

Michael Cimino is taking his talents to two more YA romantic comedies.
The “Love, Victor” actor will recur in the fourth and final season of Netflix’s “Never Have I Ever.” Cimino will also lead the upcoming HBO Max special “B-Loved.”
In “Never Have I Ever,” Cimino will play Ethan, a skater and the season’s new heartthrob. But, fans of the series will have to wait a while before he graces the halls of Sherman Oaks High, since he won’t appear until Season 4. Season 3 of the Mindy Kaling series, which stars Maitreyi Ramakrishnan, is set to debut Aug. 12.
For “B-Loved,” Cimino will star opposite “Cobra Kai” actress Peyton List. The special consists of two episodes, which will follow List as Bea, a free-spirited teenage ghost who forms a special friendship with the new boy in town, Cole (Cimino), whose house she has been inhabiting for more than 100 years.

Note: Spoilers for the entirety of “Love, Victor” Season 3 below.
For the past three years, “Love, Victor” has shepherded a wave of uplifting stories centered around young, queer people, including Hulu’s “Crush,” HBO Max’s “Genera+ion,” and Netflix’s “The Half of It” and “Heartstopper.” The serialized spin-off to the 2018 film “Love, Simon,” following Michael Cimino’s Victor Salazar, a closeted high schooler of Colombian and Puerto Rican descent, was heralded as having rectified some of the sins of its predecessor, offering a more nuanced and intricate representation of LGBTQ+ youth.
With its third season, which debuted on Hulu (and Disney+) in its entirety June 15, the series is coming to a close. The show’s unexpected end — announced back in February — came despite its maintenance of strong audience and critical reviews, with Them magazine describing it as “distressing proof that nothing pure lasts forever.”

From its very first episode, Hulu’s “Love, Victor” feels like a hug.
Created by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who adapted “Love, Simon” for the big screen, the series expands upon the film with a young, closeted student at Creekwood High School: Victor Salazar (Michael Cimino).
As with “Love, Simon,” “Love, Victor” is heartfelt and humorous — an extension of Becky Albertalli’s original novel and an opportunity for Aptaker and Berger to tell more queer stories with the help of executive producer Brian Tanen.
“We love our teen drama and we wanted to have lots of exciting things happening to these kids,” says Tanen, who executive produced “Atypical” and cut his teeth writing and story editing credits on “Ugly Betty,” “Grey’s Anatomy,” and “Desperate Housewives.” “Sometimes that meant sad things and real emotional problems that real teenagers grapple with, but we always wanted to balance that with wish fulfillment,...

“Love, Victor” is being added to Disney+.
The upcoming third season of the teen coming-of-age drama, will be available on Disney+ and Hulu beginning June 15, along with Seasons 1 and 2, a source with knowledge of the move confirmed to TheWrap.
“Love, Victor” was originally developed for Disney+ but was moved to Hulu after Disney worried that some of the themes explored in the show, such as alcohol use and teen sexuality, might not belong on the family friendly streamer. It was the second project to be moved to Hulu for similar reasons, following the Zoe Kravitz-led “High Fidelity” reimagining, which was canceled after one season.

Hulu’s “Love, Victor” is coming to an end with its upcoming third season. The final season of the series will premiere on June 15.

Hulu has released the first trailer for the second season of its heartwarming LGBTQ teen series “Love, Victor.” Based on the “Love, Simon” YA book and movie franchise, the first season of “Love, Victor” expanded on the concept of a closeted gay teenager who works out his feelings about coming out through writing letters. (Hence the title.) Where “Love, Simon” wrote letters to a paramour, “Love, Victor” puts its leading man (cutie pie Michael Cimino) in touch with the older Simon, who acts as a kind of gay older brother/mentor to Victor.
The first season set up this dynamic, introduced a slew of other amusing characters in Victor’s orbit, and also explored cultural nuances of LGBTQ acceptance through Victor’s close-knit Latinx family. Season 1 left off with Victor’s impending coming out to his traditional parents, and the Season 2 trailer picks up at the cliffhanger of that final scene.

U.K. production company Shakespeare Sisters has acquired the film rights to the popular YA novel “The Upside of Unrequited,” written by best-selling scribe Becky Albertalli. The author’s debut novel, “Simon Vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda,” was adapted as the gay teen romantic comedy movie “Love, Simon,” which – distributed by 20th Century Fox – grossed $66 million worldwide, and inspired the Hulu spin-off series “Love, Victor.”
The movie adaptation of “The Upside of Unrequited” will be written and directed by Hillary Shakespeare and Anna-Elizabeth Shakespeare, who are best known for their recent coming-of-age film “Soundtrack to Sixteen.” Albertalli also joins as executive producer on the feel-good summer romance.
The story centers on awkward 17-year-old Molly, who has had 26 crushes and exactly zero kisses. She’s sure love confessions can only go one way for weight-challenged girls: utter humiliation. Now that her twin Cassie is swept up in her first romance, Molly has never felt more alone.

A reboot of the Fox 2000 feature Love, Simon, the half-hour series was originally developed for Disney+ before moving to the more adult-oriented streamer out of concerns about themes including drinking and adultery.
Inspired by Becky Albertalli's book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda, Michael Cimino steps into the role of Victor, with original feature film star Nick Robinson serving as the show's narrator.

It’s an uncomfortable but inevitable truth of the LGBTQ civil rights movement that white gay men have always come first, even as others were doing the work. From being the face of same sex marriage to most screen representations, cute white boys are always the first to the table. So when “Love, Simon” premiered in 2018, becoming the first major Hollywood movie to center a gay teen coming out, it made sense that it was cutie pie Nick Robinson who got the part. While he was extremely charming in the role, Robinson is smart to take a backseat as executive producer on “Love, Victor,” the adorable Hulu series based in the same universe as “Love, Simon.”
Based on Becky Albertalli’s 2015 young adult novel “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda,” “Love, Simon” follows a closeted high schooler’s secret email romance with a mystery classmate. It...

Love, Simon was one of the sweetest surprises of 2018. The Greg Berlanti-directed adaptation of Becky Albertalli’s Simon vs. The Homo Sapiens Agenda, did well both critically and commercially and has led to a further expansion of the on-screen world.
Last year, Hulu announced they would be making a TV show sequel called Love, Victor for Disney+. In February, it was announced it would actually premiere on Hulu, which is also under the Disney corporate umbrella.
While the TV series does not boast Love, Simon director Greg Berlanti behind the camera in that same role, it does have Love, Simon screenwriters Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger. Aptaker and Berger created the series and wrote the first episode.

What defines a Disney Plus original? With the upcoming “Love, Victor” moving from the nascent streaming platform to its older sister service, Hulu, and “Lizzie McGuire” regressing to development mode, what constitutes “family friendly” — a key component of Disney Plus’ overall proposition — has become a recurring a question mark.
The head-scratching started two weeks ago, prompted by the news about “Love, Victor,” which centers on a gay teenager figuring out life at a new high school while dealing with challenges at home. It immediately provoked whispers about whether the streamer’s definition of “family friendly” excluded Lgbtq storylines.
“I think they have concerns about how to present Lgbtq stories and themes,” said a top agent who works frequently with the service. “Certainly, in the modern era, family friendly values have to include room for Lgbtq characters, and obviously sexuality is part of exploring that.”

Earlier this year, it was announced that the beautiful coming-of-age film Love, Simon is being reimagined as a television series. You can thank Disney for the project, who joined forces with This Is Us showrunners Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger, who also wrote the original film.
Thankfully, the Disney+ series isn't a remake of the 2018 movie, which was widely celebrated, and for good reason. The original film was inspired by Becky Albertalli's bestselling novel, and the TV series will follow a new set of characters as they navigate the tumultuous world of high school - all set in the same world as the film. Ahead, see everyone who has signed on for the Disney+ Love, Simon series so far.

Becky Albertalli's queer young adult book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda is being made into a TV show.
Romantic comedies got a lot of much-deserved love and attention in 2018; one of the less-talked-about contributions to that glorious rom-com resurgence was the Greg Berlanti-directed Love, Simon, an adaptation of Becky Albertalli's queer young adult book Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda.
Love, Simon was a critical and box office success, making $66 million on a $10-$17 million budget as the first major Hollywood film to center around a gay teen romance. While there has been no official movement on adapting Albertalli's sequel—Leah on the Offbeat, which centers on Simon's best (played by 13 Reasons Why's Katherine Langford in the film)—Variety just announced that a Love, Simon TV series is in development at Disney+, Disney's upcoming streaming service.

This year Nick Robinson starred in the coming-of-age teen dramedy “Love, Simon,” which premiered at Mardi Gras Film Festival on February 27 and was released by 20th Century Fox in the United States on March 16. Robinson is mostly known for playing Ryder Scanlan in ABC Family’s “Melissa and Joey” (2010-2015) and Zach Mitchell in “Jurassic World” (2015), so he’s already a familiar face in the industry. Will Hollywood Foreign Press Association voters give him love for his breakthrough performance in “Love, Simon” by nominating him for Best Musical/Comedy Actor at the 2019 Golden Globes?
See‘Love, Simon’ leading man Nick Robinson is this year’s Timothee Chalamet
In the movie, which was directed by Greg Berlanti, written by Isaac Aptaker and Elizabeth Berger (“This Is Us”) and based on Becky Albertalli’s novel “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda,” Robinson plays the title character, Simon Spier, a high school senior...

Timothee Chalamet was the break-out star of 2017, due largely to his lead role in Luca Guadagnino‘s Lgbt critical smash “Call Me By Your Name.” Chalamet was hailed by critics and adored by audiences for his weighty, emotional performance as a teenager who falls in love with a man in 1980’s Italy. At the tender of age of 22, Chalamet became the youngest person to be nominated for Best Actor at Oscars since Mickey Rooney in 1939 (for “Babes in Arms”) and the first person born in the 90’s to be nominated for the award.

Anonymous Content has nabbed the rights to “What If It’s Us,” a young-adult novel that’s attracting a lot of buzz before its publication next month. The company has tapped “13 Reasons Why” creator and Pulitzer Prize-winning playwright Brian Yorkey to adapt the book for the big screen.
“What If It’s Us” is generating a lot of attention because it’s the first collaboration between Adam Silvera and Becky Albertalli, two authors who have scored notable successes by writing queer love stories aimed at teens. Albertalli wrote “Simon vs. the Homo Sapiens Agenda,” which was recently adapted into the film “Love, Simon,” and Silvera penned “They Both Die at the End.” “What If It’s Us” is in a similar vein. It centers on on a meet-cute between two boys at a post office and the subsequent trials and tribulations of their relationship. BuzzFeed, Publishers Weekly, and Bustle...

Last year, 20th Century Fox had two films in Oscar contention based on true stories: the P.T. Barnum musical biopic “The Great Showman” starring Hugh Jackman and Michelle Williams; and “The Post,” Steven Spielberg‘s docudrama about the 1971 decision by Washington Post publisher Kay Graham (Meryl Streep) to trust her editor Ben Bradlee (Tom Hanks) and publish a classified dossier on the escalating American involvement in the Vietnam conflict.
This year, the studio has four strong contenders led by Steve McQueen‘s “Widows,” a film version of a hit British TV series. This is his first film since the Oscar-winning “12 Years a Slave” in 2013. The all-star cast is led by Viola Davis, who could well be nominated for her leading role as a woman who takes over the planning of a bank robbery after her husband dies.
Below, detailed listings of each of these Oscar contenders, including release dates,...
