Some stories have nothing particularly new to say, but that’s okay, because there are always new people who need to learn from them. What it lacks in originality, Luis Gerard’s Oscar-qualifying short makes up for in specificity and quality, and though older viewers will quickly see what’s coming, there’s a lot to admire along the way.
Walter (Isaac Kragten) is a teenager in a small town, the son of the local undertakers. Whilst his father attends to corpses and his mother to mourners, he slips away on his bike and visits the homes of the recently deceased, helping himself to money and small pieces of property unlikely to be missed. Now that his little brother Martin (Zander Colbeck-Bhola) is growing up, he’s decided that it’s time to start taking him along on these expeditions. For the second weekend in a row, it’s family time at the multiplex. But that “Ft” tag is true on both levels since Love On The Rocks was an adult “dramedy” and Eternal Beauty was a dark tale of conflict and tragedy. The latter focused on sisters while the former featured a “caper” involving a father (and grandfather) and his daughter (also a mother). This new flick almost wears its “PG” rating as a beacon welcoming in “all ages”. It does concern three generations of a family, and it’s a comedy full of “gross-out” gags, slapstick pratfalls, and elaborate pranks to appeal to the tots and “pre-teens” weaned on annual holiday reruns of the Home Alone movies. Oh, but things aren’t all “tears and hugs” as the youngest lad in this household starts The War With Grandpa.

The kid cast of the PBS series “Odd Squad” is gearing up for its usual challenge, teaching kids about math and science. While the four new members of the team tape scenes in New York’s Central Park, however, a bigger threat looms.
Viewers of “Odd Squad” will not be all that familiar with Valentina Herrera, Jayce Alexander, Alyssa Hidalgo and Gavin MacIver-Wright when they take to the PBS Kids schedule sometime in 2020 for the third cycle of this popular kids’ program. Producers are betting fans of the program and others who have yet to sample it will embrace them quickly. A cast shake-up is not the norm for most series, but for “Odd Squad” it has fast become de rigueur.
Across kids’ TV, most favorites rarely change. Curious George looks almost the same now as he did when he debuted in 2006. The same is true for Nickelodeon’s SpongeBob SquarePants.
