After directing three films in four years with Bone Tomahawk, Brawl in Cell Block 99, and Dragged Across Concrete, it’s now been six long years since the latest new feature from S. Craig Zahler. While he’s chimed in on his recent avorite films and beyond, it’s been fairly silent regarding his next potential project. We now finally have an update on what’s on his plate.
“A number of articles have announced The Big Stone Grid as my next picture, which is not quite correct,” Zahler noted on his blog. “I am sending that script around as a possible fifth movie, but I’ve made far more progress with another different original project to direct for my fourth one: I am negotiating deals to see if it will become a reality. I will give more information about this when things are more certain. Continue to look here for my next movie announcement.

To allow time for disc authoring and quality control, we have had to push the release date back to 27th November 2023 in the UK and 28th November 2023 in the US and Canada.

Yes, you still have time to get some reading done before the (ugh) end of summer. To help you get started, our latest roundup of noteworthy new books connected to the world of cinema features a packed lineup of gems. And there are even more recent books (including an epic list of new novels) that we will highlight in our next column this fall.
Before we dive in, though, a note regarding the late William Friedkin, who is referenced in two entries below: I would encourage readers to check out his 2013 memoir, The Friedkin Connection. He was, as you would expect, remarkably candid about his ups and downs, making for one of the more forthright filmmaker memoirs ever written.
The Exorcist Legacy: 50 Years of Fear by Nat Segaloff (Citadel)
The world lost the aforementioned William Friedkin on August 7, and with his passing came a renewed appreciation for greats like The French Connection,...

Michael Mann most recently directed the pilot for Tokyo Vice (HBO Max; Mann is shooting Ferrari now). His direction was characteristically efficient and vibey, less concerned with conveying the mechanics of any plot point than in displaying the consequences of maximum pressure on individuals in systems beyond their control. You know, Michael Mann stuff. In one sequence, Ansel Elgort—an actor seemingly incapable of insinuating—takes a difficult test to qualify to be a reporter at Yomiuri Shimbun. The situation is stressful—a white guy trying to break into Japan’s largest and most storied newspaper. But the scene is just a guy in a room taking a standardized test. This is not what one would think of as “must-see TV.” Yet Mann devotes nearly four minutes to it, catching unexpected angles on Elgort’s face and neck, watching that elegant Elgort hair flop casually even though the character is up against it.

Each week we highlight the noteworthy titles that have recently hit streaming platforms in the United States. Check out this week’s selections below and past round-ups here.
Antlers (Scott Cooper)
Scott Cooper is comfortable in the mud. The American director routinely finds himself in the confines of the lowdown and dirty, in gritty landscapes with working-class characters overcoming their shortcomings and often turning to violence to solve their problems. While his previous two features Black Mass and Hostiles failed to find tension in their deliberately tedious pacing, Antlers strikes the balance between methodology, terror, and blue-collar dynamics. – Erik N. (full review)
Where to Stream: HBO Max
Blackhat (Michael Mann)
Michael Mann is one of the few directors still making thoughtfully composed and visceral action films for an audience that refuses to turn its brain off. That Mann also chooses to tackle concerns of the modern world while still maintaining...

Anaphora is a simple grammatical construction; it simply means the repetition of words at the beginning of successive sentences. Repeat something at the start of a few ideas and it starts to seem like an incantation, the start of a spiritual invocation. For me it’s how the auteurist part of my brain works. I see the signals up front that tell me whose work I’m watching, they align my defenses, attune me to the inner working of the art in front of me. The anaphoric tendencies of directors are signals to those of us looking for a way in. They’re mutual shibboleths, allowing us to know they have a coherent body of work, a continuity of visual and aural ideas of which to keep track. A body of work becomes a road map or a sheet of music. A way to orient oneself inside an artist’s mind.
