Telling five Covid-related stories, this platitudinous urban-interconnection drama offers lectures on virtue and self-sacrifice and feels like state propaganda
This interminable anthology film about the pandemic feels like being force-fed lectures on altruism, family responsibility, self-sacrifice and neighbourly forbearance by the Chinese government (which produced it). Set almost entirely in Wuhan – Covid ground zero – it’s handsomely photographed, making the emptied-out city look drowned and dystopian. But its five mawkish segments contain hardly any worthwhile drama and the whole comes over as more of a public information film than anything else.
First up in its parade of paragons is Shanghai banker Nanfeng (Fang Yin), who has come to Wuhan to propose to ex-girlfriend Xiaoyu (Dongyu Zhou). But she is in isolation in hospital, so he promises to look after her mother who is in intensive care across the city. In the second story, another government gold star goes to two...

The China box office bounced back this weekend to its pre-pandemic levels, figures from its National Day holiday weekend show — proving that the right mix of competitive new local titles can entice viewers in, what this year is very much on track to be, the world’s largest movie market.
The news comes as other major markets flounder, with Regal Cinemas owner Cineworld Group announcing the temporary suspension of its U.S. and U.K. operations due to an insufficient pipeline of Hollywood studio tentpoles, causing its shares to plummet more than 40% on Monday.
China’s week-long vacation period to celebrate the Oct. 1 founding of the People’s Republic is one of its busiest moviegoing periods of the year. That is particularly true this year, after Covid-19 shut down cinemas and wiped out the prospects of the strong Lunar New Year release window. Three of the top five titles this...

The International Academy of Television Arts & Sciences is sticking with a November date for its 48th International Emmy Awards, the organization announced Tuesday. But in one change due to the Covid-19 pandemic, semifinal judging will now take place online.
Nominations will be announced in late September, while the awards gala is currently scheduled to take place on November 23. The International Academy said it “is exploring and working on various configurations for its November gala celebrations with an in-person component, should circumstances permit.”
The International Emmy judging panels are usually hosted by members at in-person events throughout the world. Normally, hosts recommend and invite jurors to participate in these closed-door panels, which determine category nominees. Now, all online semi-final judging will be administered by the Frame.io video platform.

"You protect the world. I'll protect you." Well Go USA has released two official trailers for an indie drama from China called Better Days, originally Shaonian de ni, made by filmmaker Derek Tsang. In this dramatic / romantic thriller, Nian finds her life at a standstill when faced by relentless bullying from her peers as she prepares for her college entrance exam. Fate brings her together with a small-time criminal named Bei, but before they can retreat into a world of their own, both are dragged into the middle of a murder investigation that will change their lives forever. It seems to be a fairly rough, honest look at bullying and the challenges of young life in China. "Derek Kwok-cheung Tsang's intense melodramatic thriller paints a bleak picture of an oppressive society, in the guise of a gripping fairy-tale love story." Starring Zhou Dongyu and Jackson Yee, along with Fang Yin and Jue Huang.

"This mission is a message to all terrorists." Well Go USA has released an official trailer for an action movie titled Operation Red Sea, made by Hong Kong filmmaker Dante Lam, who last made the action movie Operation Mekong. This sort-of-sequel is about the Chinese Navy's elite Jiaolong Assault Team who gear up and head into action when a terrorist plot to obtain nuclear materials is hidden under the cover of a violent coup. This pretty much looks if Michael Bay was from China, with all of his usual explosive touches. It also seems perhaps like a Chinese propaganda movie about how great their navy is. The huge cast includes Yi Zhang, Johnny Huang, Hai-Qing, Jiang Du, Luxia Jiang, Fang Yin, Yutian Wang, Jiahao Guo, and Henry Prince Mak. This also takes place mostly in the desert, despite the "Red Sea" part of the title. Here's the official Us trailer...
