- First head coach of the 1947-48 Providence Steamrollers of the Basketball Association of America (forerunner of the NBA). When the team's record reached 2 wins/17 losses, he was replaced by Nat Hickey.
- Running back/defensive back with the NFL's New York Giants, 1937-1944 & 1946.
- In the NFL championship game played 11 December 1938, he caught the winning touchdown pass from quarterback Ed Danowski. The New York Giants defeated the Green Bay Packers, 23-17.
- American League umpire, 1950-1971. He was then appointed an umpire supervisor and worked games occasionally, 1972-1975 & 1977-1978.
- Inducted into the Providence College Athletic Hall of Fame in 1970.
- The Hank Soar Athletic Complex in Pawtucket, Rhode Island is named for him.
- Inducted into the Rhode Island Heritage Hall of Fame in 1967.
- Buried at Swan Point Cemetery, Providence, Rhode Island.
- Member of Providence College's baseball team (1933-1936) and football team, (1933-1936).
- First base umpire on 8 October 1956, when Don Larsen pitched the first perfect game in a World Series.
- Umpired first major league game 18 April 1950; umpired final major league game 3 September 1978.
- Umpired one AL Championship Series (1971); five World Series (1953, 1956, 1962, 1964, 1969); and four All-Star Games (1952, 1955, 1959, 1963).
