Following its world premiere at South by Southwest, You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder changed its tune to the more memorable Bleeding Love, an homage to the Leona Lewis mega hit featured in the film and a fitting allusion to the emotionally fueled core of the father-daughter focused story. Ewan McGregor stars alongside his real-life daughter Clara McGregor, who produced and co-wrote the story with producer Vera Bulder and Ruby Caster. Though a work of fiction, the idea began with Clara drawing on past aspects of her own father-daughter relationship.

Playing families on screen is a challenge for any actors. Finding the chemistry between siblings, parents and their kids, and even spouses can be a matter of finding the right combination of talent and connection. Over the years, parents and their children have portrayed fictional dynamics similar to their own, notably Paper Moon starring Ryan and Tatum O’Neal. There are a lot fewer of these movies than you might think. Luckily, rising star Clara McGregor envisioned a film that echoed her relationship with her father, Ewan McGregor, and the actor was more than willing to step in as the dad on screen as well. The result, Bleeding Love, is a wonderful road trip film that takes the familiar tropes of the genre and adds to it.
Bleeding Love tells the story of an unnamed Daughter (Clara McGregor) being driven across the American Southwest by her Father (Ewan McGregor) after she recently overdosed.

Plot: A gritty, emotional tale about healing familial wounds through re-connection. After a drastic incident in her life, a young woman embarks on an impromptu road trip with her estranged father. En-route to their destination of Santa Fe, New Mexico, the two are forced to confront the issues of their past that have led to their frail relationship, while encountering an eccentric array of characters along the way, in order to bring them closer together again.
Review: Road trips and redemption tales have long been staples of filmmaking, big and small. Stories of connection between estranged family members, struggles with addiction, and stark looks at the landscape of rural America are nothing new, but that does not mean they are not ripe for new stories. Bleeding Love is a film rooted in the familiar tropes of decades worth of movies and yet it still manages to bring something unique to the mix.

Being a girl dad has its problems, especially when your daughter thinks you’re a prick. As “Bleeding Love” begins, a teenage girl shoots a jaundiced look at her father who is driving her somewhere in the desolate West. She can’t hear him because her headphones are blaring “I’m Yer Dad,” a not even remotely subtle noise pop song by Grlwood that includes the lyric, “Feed me food while I watch sports / In my man cave made for sports / Whores in my porn, porn in my sports … ’Cause I’m your dad.”
Dad studies her without comprehension. She is his daughter, but she is an undiscovered country to him. He vacated his fatherly duties during his booze years, and now he must deal with an estranged beautiful daughter whose heart stopped beating last night during an overdose. He pulls his pickup to the side of the road so she can pee,...

There’s a fine line between stylized direction and direction that is so fussy that it gets in the way of a film’s actors. Unfortunately for Emma Westenberg’s directorial debut, “You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder,” that’s a line she does not navigate successfully. She’s not helped much by the underdeveloped script by Ruby Caster, who shares story credits with Vera Bulder and star-producer Clara McGregor (“American Horror Story”).

Los Angeles, July 3 (Ians) Ewan McGregor preferred to show his kids one of his films ‘just for the laughs ‘. The actor used to show the toilet scene from ‘Trainspotting’ to his kids.
“I wasn’t there when (my daughter) Clara watched Trainspotting for the first time. But I did used to show my kids ‘the toilet scene’. Just for a laugh. It’s a unique situation, perhaps, for a father to be able to show his children footage of him going down the toilet,” he said at Karlovy Vary Film Festival, recently, Variety reported.
The trauma didn’t stop there. “I have a memory of showing Clara ‘Moulin Rouge!’, however. I think she was 9 years old. I put it on, and then I hear this wailing and crying. I rushed in, asking if I should switch it off and she went: ‘Noooo!'”

Brave is the man who will sign up for a real-life father-daughter road movie set in the aftermath of an acrimonious divorce, but Ewan McGregor has no regrets about pairing up with his eldest child — by his first wife — for You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder, which screened as a tribute to the actor in Karlovy Vary. Set in a dreamlike American West, and very far removed from the specifics of the McGregors’ own personal situation, it finds a reformed alcoholic dad trying to reconnect with his offspring after collecting her from hospital. She thinks they’re off to visit an artist friend of her father’s, but the truth is that, in a bid to absolve himself of many years’ worth of guilt, he’s taking her to rehab.

Ewan and Clara McGregor with her dad's Crystal Globe in Karlovy Vary Photo: Film Servis Karlovy Vary Working for the first time with his daughter Clara on You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder - the debut feature of director Emma Westenberg - gave Ewan McGregor the same kind of energy rush he experienced when he burst on the scene with Danny Boyle in Shallow Grave in 1994.
“It was the first first film for many of us working on it. Danny set the bar very high in what you can expect in the relationship between an actor and a director. We went on to make Trainspotting, then A Life Less Ordinary and then Trainspotting 2, all films that left their mark on British cinema,” said McGregor, 52, at a media gathering after his latest film's premiere in the 57th edition of the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival.

Ewan McGregor discussed blockbuster movies, why he is currently sporting a mustache, and hopefully making more movies with his daughter Clara during a Sunday press conference at the 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival for Emma Westenberg-directed You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder, in which the McGregors star opposite each other.
The daughter and father both predicted more collaborations on Sunday. You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder premiered at South by Southwest. It is a road trip drama, inspired by the duo’s real-life stories. Clara co-wrote the script with Vera Bulder and Ruby Caster. “I’m just anticipating them writing me lots of roles,” Ewan McGregor told the press. “It’s a very good way to keep her old dad in work.”
With the actor having moved between tentpole and smaller independent movies throughout his career, he could also provide insight into some of the differences for talent.

Ewan McGregor not only received a lifetime achievement award, but also much love and adoration during a brief, but emotional ceremony at the Karlovy Vary International Film Festival on Saturday night.
During the event at the big cinema celebration in the Czech spa town, organizers and fans feted the Scottish actor, director and producer as the President’s Award for lifetime achievement was bestowed upon him. Scottish actor Ewan McGregor and Swedish Oscar winner Alicia Vikander will be honored at the 57th Karlovy Vary International Film Festival. Both will receive Karlovy Vary’s President’s Award, a lifetime achievement honor.
Vikander made her international breakthrough in Nikolaj Arcel’s A Royal Affair (2012), which was Oscar-nominated, and established her global star credentials as a humanoid android in Alex Garland’s sci-fi thriller Ex Machina, which earned her Golden Globe and BAFTA nominations, and as Danish artist Gerda Wegener in Tom Hooper’s The Danish Girl, a performance that won her the best supporting actress Oscar. She has managed to balance work in mainstream actioners, such as Jason Bourne or Tomb Raider, with more arthouse features (The Glorias, Blue Bayou).

Making a movie with your own child is perilous enough at a time when the media, which is stuffed with them, has decided that “nepo babies” are the latest blight on the eco-system of filmmaking. It’s even more of a risk when your private life has been splashed all over the tabloids, and the facts of that controversy — man leaves wife and kids to start a new family with a younger woman — are a key part of that movie. But whether or not Ewan McGregor and his daughter Clara saw the film as a chance for family therapy, or whether they even thought about these things at all, Emma Westenberg’s affecting, slow-burn debut leaves all that kind of real-world baggage firmly at the door.

Casting father and daughter in a drama loosely based on their own relationship creates a fuzzy line between reality and fiction in You Sing Loud, I Sing Louder.
This uneven indie road-trip drama is at times too by-the-numbers but is always captivating thanks to its two stars, who hold the screen throughout. Ewan McGregor plays a landscaper with a pickup truck driving his daughter, played by Clara McGregor, to a destination he doesn’t share with her, or with us, until well into the film. We immediately see the distance between them, though, which is as vast as the wide, empty New Mexico landscape they’re passing, a lonely expanse of desert and scrub. He is clearly nervous with worry, and she is belligerent. Their characters have no names, a device that doesn’t serve any purpose, because these people are very specific.
